Giles Robson & John Primer - Ten Chicago Blues Classics

Album: Ten Chicago Blues Classics
Size: 90,2 MB
Time: 38:52
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2024
Styles: Chicago blues, harmonica blues
Art: Front

1. Blow Wind Blow (4:18)
2. My Babe (2:28)
3. Rollin' Stone (3:26)
4. Juke (Instrumental) (2:20)
5. Let Me Explain (2:44)
6. Long Distance Call (4:30)
7. Dealin' With The Devil (4:44)
8. Got My Mojo Workin' (Instrumental) (5:42)
9. Bad Boy (4:21)
10. Last Night (Instrumental) (4:15)

Giles Robson is one of the most respected harmonica players around at the moment, standing tall amongst the likes of Charlie Musselwhite and Jason Ricci. John Primer is an American Chicago blues and electric blues singer and guitarist who played behind Junior Wells in the house band at Theresa's Lounge and as a member of the bands of Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Magic Slim before launching an award-winning career as a solo artist. He is also a multiple Grammy nominee, Blues Music, Blues Blast and Living Blues Award winner, Blues Hall of Fame inductee.

If you want to get to the very heart of Chicago Blues, you won’t need to look much further than this pairing. Tracks from Muddy Waters, Little Walter, both Sonny Boy Williamsons and one by Eddie Taylor, all of them classics and, in this format, very much for those who enjoy Chicago Blues without any effects or embellishments. Primer’s guitar is clean and tuneful while Robson blows a harp with apparent simplicity – something that only the best can manage.

All of the tracks are true to the heart of the blues and true to the originals but the two put their own skills and style into every track. The version of Muddy Waters ‘Rollin’ Stone’ is spare and the music has a brilliant edge to it with a fine vocal from Robson, sung rather shouted as Muddy himself was prone to do. Little Walters ‘My Babe’ (written by Willie Dixon) has been covered hundreds of times but this version sounds fresh and eminently listenable.

‘Let Me Explain’ by Sonny Boy Williamson II (he was active at the same time as a Delta player by the same ‘name’ so was generally called II) is remarkably true to the original with Robson’s harmonica very close and a great choppy sound from Primer. There is also a version of Sonny Boy Williamson I’s ‘Dealing With The Devil’ that has a more Delta feel to it. All ten tracks are true Chicago Blues in style and the playing of both artists is superb. It is modern but classic – a worthy album that any real blues lover should want. /Andy Snipper, Music-News

12. Way Past Midnight (6:41)

UK blues harp star Giles Robson makes his US recording debut with his new album Don’t Give Up On The Blues. Robson is a Blues Music Award-winning artist who is widely considered to be one of the finest living blues harmonica specialists. He’s only the third UK artist to win a BMA, the other two being Eric Clapton and Peter Green. Robson has become a headliner in Russia, Spain, France, Italy, and everywhere else European fans love great blues music.

Don’t Give Up On The Blues marks Robson’s entry into the American music scene as a solo artist and he clearly means to have his way with it. Backed by BMA-winning keyboardist Bruce Katz and his blistering band, the record is a collection of 12 roof-raising original tracks that walk an entertaining line between classic and contemporary blues. Katz, Robson, and Ben Elliott co-produced and did an excellent job capturing Robson’s live vibe and roadhouse warrior presence. The tracks all groove hard and are full of many freewheeling, unforced performances from everyone involved. All of the musicians put their own modern energy underneath the timeless influences they’re invoking and the end product is an outstanding blues record without any dead spots.

“Land To Land” opens the record with a strong signature riff shared by Robson and guitarist Aaron Lieberman and a tough medium-speed pocket. From the first notes he blows, Robson becomes part of that pocket with the band rather than floating on top of it like many other harp players do. It makes all the difference. Whether riffing or soloing, Robson stands tall in the groove and plays off of the others in the most wonderful way. His vocals are gruff and engaging and suit his style well. The track simply works and Robson keeps turning this deceptively simple-sounding trick throughout the album.

The title track, “Don’t Give Up On The Blues,” is a crisp rumpty-rump shuffle that affords Robson some space to stretch and develop his licks while lyrically preaching on the healing power of this music. Katz’s pumping piano really propels the song and serves as a good textural contrast to Robson’s fat harp sound. “Damn Fool Way” is a tom tom-driven Bo Diddley beat topped with lyrics telling the story of a repentant man who knows he lost his love by acting the fool. It’s an emotive and hypnotic song and Robson turns in some of his best playing on it.

“Fearless Leaders” is a low-down slow blues that offers some hard-nosed social commentary along with the music and Robson handles it well, wondering out loud if it’s us or those in charge who are the bigger fools. Expressing these kinds of present-day sentiments does much to keep the blues relevant, prevents it from becoming “museum music,” and should be encouraged. It keeps the blues off of life support in a much more profound way than rewriting fifty-year-old songs ever will. Other can’t-miss cuts include the funky “Hey, Hey Now” and the epic slow-burn closing song “Way Past Midnight.”

Giles Robson is a huge talent whose reputation will only grow in the next few years. He has a gorgeous harp tone, an individual style, and writes better songs than many of his peers. Blues fans should expect to hear a lot about him in the near future because Don’t Give Up On The Blues is going to kick open some doors. ~Mike O’Cull

A wonderfull tribute from one virtuoso to another ...

For those who have been able to experience Giles Robson on our stages, for them this virtuoso on the harp no longer needs an introduction. When I first saw this British harper I was immediately blown off my socks. We write in 2016 and could not at first understand that he remained hidden for the blues enthusiasts in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Giles Robson was already well known in the UK with the band 'Giles Robson & The Dirty Aces', but it was only after that period that he really landed on the crossroads of the blues. His solo debut album 'For Those Who Need The Blues' immediately skyrocketed and he was ready to conquer the rest of Europe. Giles Robson was clearly appreciated for his ability on the blues harp because immediately we could enjoy his virtuosity at various festivals and in various clubs.

For fans of the 'blues harp' it is now enjoyment because together with guitarist Chris Corcoran, this Giles Robson has produced a daring piece. Both have examined the work of Marion Walter Jacobs AKA Little Walter. As a young boy, Giles Robson soon lost his heart to working icons such as Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson and with that the old school blues. He found his partner in crime in guitarist Chris Corcoran to withdraw the 'The Shack Studio' by Paul Richardson in Essex, only armed with a harp, guitar and amplifier. Barely a good month later, the result is already canned and this homage to Little Walter has its release on April .

The album of this Giles Robson and Chris Corcoran has 12 songs of which 9 come from the legacy of Little Walter. 'Mr Walter' is one that was written by both interpreters and has two versions on this album. 'Deep South Guitar Blues' is the other non-Walter song. The sound of Giles Robson comes from a 'Honeyboy Amp', handcrafted originals by Andy Smith in order to approach the vintage sound of this harmonica pioneer perfectly.

Both gentlemen open here with 'Juke', the instrumental song of Little Water from 1952 that is considered a 'blues harp standard'. Then we get a haunting version of 'Blue Midnight' with a famous guitar reef, something that was more relevant in that period. The sound of just Giles 'harp and Chris six strings brings us to listen to this' Roller Coaster! back to the period that Chess Records also had its rise. A rise that then also the young wolves of the Stones had not escaped.

With 'Lights Out' we get one from 1951 that is also on Little Walter's album 'Stray Dog Blues'. A song on which the howlin 'sound of Giles Robson will cut through marrow and leg. With 'rocker' they both approach the uplifting sound of the Mississippi Saxophone, which we love all harp lovers. Furthermore, they also do 'Bad Track' and close with the quieter 'Sad Hours'.

Again emphasize that all songs are brought here as instrumental versions on this tribute to one of the greatest blues harper of all time. (Google translation)

Giles Robson - For Those Who Need The Blues

Year: 2016
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 45:44
Size: 105,4 MB
Styles: Electric blues, harmonica blues
Scans: Full

1. Shady Heart (4:31)
2. Sarah Lee (4:43)
3. Where You Been? (6:07)
4. Andy Steps Out (3:01)
5. Bound For The Border (4:29)
6. Start A War (5:52)
7. G.R. Shuffle (4:53)
8. Summa That Good Stuff (4:17)
9. A Walter Shade Of Blue (7:49)

"For Those Who Need The Blues" features nine gloriously dirty, sweat-down-the-wall bar room blues tracks, uncontrived with absolutely no gimmicks. This is the realm of the twelve bar blues - blues in its most exquisite, raw and primal state. The album was recorded in the space of an afternoon completely live with no overdubs and all within one or two takes per track. The album feels how the blues should feel: spontaneous, full of attitude and grit, mightily groovy and is fronted by Robson's massive harp tone and soulful playing.

Robson's day job is with The Dirty Aces, but needing a band at the Great British Rock & Blues festival in January 2016, and with insufficient time to rehearse a full Dirty Aces set, Robson decided to hit the ground running by playing the sort of powerful classic blues that has always been a deep passion. The band and the deeply blues orientated material he arranged proved such a success with the 1,800 strong audience that Robson instantly booked studio time to get it down on tape. Two weeks later and still fresh from their festival performance Robson and his newly forged band recorded these tracks. Echoing the classic sounds of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Muddy Waters, The Red Devils and Little Walter this truly is an album, as the title suggests, "For Those Who Need The Blues".

Personnel: Giles Robson (vocals, harp), Andy Knight (guitar), Jeff Walker (bass), Darren Crome (drums)
