Blues Music Award & Grammy winner Jimmy Carpenter releases his latest album Just Got Started via Gulf Coast Records. Produced by legendary Norwegian blues giant Kid Andersen and Mike Zito at the legendary Californian studio Greaseland. This record features some reimagined classics such as "Midnight Blue" and "My Babe" alongside Jimmy's new material "I Only Gamble With My Heart" and the album title track "(Feels Like) I Just Got Started". This will be Jimmy's sixth album, and will see him touring across the United States and Europe for the "I Just Got Started" tour.

"This album is very different than the previous five; more groovy and soulful, but not overdone. The musicianship really brings it home, and I could feel the love as we recorded it. Two-time Blues Music Award-winning sax player Jimmy Carpenter (2021/2022) has something special in-store for his fans with the release of his new CD, The Louisiana Record.

"When Mike Zito, my old friend and co-owner of Gulf Coast Records, called to say it was time for me to make another record, I was super excited," Carpenter recalls. "When he told me about his idea for a Louisiana-themed cover album, I admit I was skeptical; but the longer I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. As Mike pointedout, there is no doubt that my time in New Orleans redefined me as a musician, and changed me forever on many levels. When he suggested we go down to Dockside Studios, situated on the lazy Vermilion River south of Lafayette, Louisiana, record with iconic New Orleans engineer, Mr. David Farrell, AND work with some of my dearest friends and finest musicians in the Crescent City, I was absolutely sold. From a very long and amazing list, we chose songs by some of the most important songwriters in American music, artists like Allen Toussaint, Fats Domino, and Dr. John. The Louisiana Record is my tribute to the mash-up of Blues, Soul, Rhythm & Blues, and Rock-n-roll that is New Orleans Music."

Joining Jimmy Carpenter (sax and vocals) for the red beans and rice run of 11 songs on The Louisiana Record are: Mike Zito - guitars; Casandra Faulconer - bass guitar; John Gros - piano/organ; and Wayne Maureau - drums.

Now based in Las Vegas, Jimmy Carpenter lived and performed in New Orleans from early 2004 until 2016, and his time there clearly influenced his music. "Without question, New Orleans and the music that flows out of that great city have had a huge impact on me, musically and personally," Carpenter says. "These are songs by iconic American songwriters, just a few of my favorites that helped shape me and my approach to writing, playing^ and living. [t is impossible to overstate the influence New Orleans, its music and its musicians have had on me, as player, songwriter, and performer.

"The musical bar in New Orleans is set very high, and it's both terrifying and inspiring. I got used to being in over my head, and hanging on for dear life. But as daunting as the music can be, I was welcomed and encouraged by the musicians and the community. My friends that recorded this album with me were all huge parts of my 'upbringing" in that scene, and l'm so happy we came together again to record these songs. "There are so many songs that I've come across in my life that originated in Nola. I did 'I Hear You Knocking' and 'Travelin' Mood' years ago, but hearing Fats Domino and Dr. John do them - right in front of me - really gave them new meaning.

"As I searched for songs for this record, the one that I was sure I wanted to do was the beautiful ballad, All These Things. Written by one of the world's greatest songwriters, Mr. Allen Toussaint, and recorded originally by Art 'Poppa Funk' Neville, it is the epitome of New Orleans soul: simple, melodic, grooving and a great song for some pretty sax.

"'Something You Got,' by Chris Kenner, is a standard in New Orleans, but I did not realize how many artists, from all over the world, have recorded it. I think we put a very cool, funky, greasy spin on it, and it's definitely gonna' be in my regular set hence forth.

"This record is very different for me, recorded almost completely live, with simple instrumentation, and no frills. Strong melodies, laid back, grooving, iconic songs that were a real pleasure to play and sing, especially with this group of musicians, and literally on the bayou at Dockside Studios."

Some albums need no more classification than to say that they are good-time music. That can certainly be said for Soul Doctor, the latest album from Jimmy Carpenter. The band combines blues, soul, and funk for a fun sound that gets you moving.

Like The Blues Brothers, the title track is a combination of blues and soul. Jason Langley’s bass line is immediately noticeable and finds as good a groove as anything by Donald “Duck” Dunn. Carpenter’s saxophone and Red Young’s Hammond B3 also add a healthy injection of soul to this upbeat song, while the blues component comes mainly from the guitar of Nick Schnebelen.

The soul continues in “When I Met You” specifically from Doug Woolverton (trumpet) and Mark Earley (baritone sax), who sound like they could just as easily be backing James Hunter.

“Love It So Much” features Mike Zito (who also mastered the album) on guitar. This song is propelled by the zydeco-sounding beat of Cameron Tyler and has the classic theme of loving life on the road which is particularly evident when Carpenter sings, “Life in a suitcase somehow suits me.” Don’t be surprised if this song has you looking for a dance partner.

The album takes a turn toward the funky “Wanna Be Right”. The story in this song is worth paying attention to. The narrator sings about being in a troubled relationship. For advice, he turns to the internet. The advice he receives is a question a lot of people have had to answer. “Do you wanna be right, or do you wanna be happy?” This one will definitely get people moving on a dance floor – especially in the instrumental break to end the song.

The funky sounds continue on the band’s version of “One Mint Julep” gets a funky update. The saxophone comes to the forefront while the rhythm section lays down some Motown sounds and makes this an easy song to dance to.

This is a great album to play if you’re looking for an instant mood boost. It’s hard to remain in a foul mood when you hear this collection of songs. ~Gary Schwind

On the long drives during Mike Zito and The Wheel’s last European tour, the conversation turned to what Jimmy Carpenter should do next. “You need to make a blues sax record”, says Zito, “a no-frills, straight-up blues album. That’s what your fans want to hear, and I want to produce it.” An interesting idea, and fitting: a 30+-year veteran of the Blues world, Jimmy had never made a real Blues record. It made sense, and concept became reality soon thereafter: Jimmy Carpenter Plays The Blues was recorded at NOLA Studios in New Orleans during Mardi Gras, and a new chapter in his career began.

Multiple Blues Music Award-nominee Jimmy Carpenter’s career has spanned over 35 years, and he shows no sign of slowing down. The saxophonist, singer/songwriter/arranger began playing professionally in North Carolina in 1980. He toured the globe with Tinsley Ellis, Jimmy Thackery, and, after a move to New Orleans in 2004, with Walter Wolfman Washington, Eric Lindell, Honey Island Swamp Band, and most recently, his long-time friend and musical cohort, Mike Zito. These days he is also Assistant Talent Buyer and Musical Director of The Big Blues Bender In Las Vegas. Plays the Blues is his third solo album, following Walk Away, (2014, Vizztone VTJC14) and Toiling in Obscurity, (self-release, 2008). He continues to tour internationally with his own band, and often as a special guest on major festivals all over the world and with his many friends in the blues community.

In addition to his work as bandleader and horn arranger with New Orleans icon Walter Wolfman Washington and The Roadmasters, he has embarked on a very exciting project with Mike Zito and The Wheel, recording 2 albums (Gone to Texas and the just-released Live CD/DVD, Songs From the Road, on Ruf Records). He was nominated in 2014 for Best Instrumentalist/Horn by the Blues Foundation, and he has just released his 2nd solo album, Walk Away, on Vizztone. Keeping up a steady international touring schedule, he has appeared as Special Guest Artist on several major festivals this year, including Paulie's New Orleans Jazz and Blues Festival, Worcester, MA; Blues from The Top, in Winter Park, CO; Blues to Bop in Lugano, Switzerland, and The BIg Blues Bender, Las Vegas. He is also ramping up his own band's presence, doing multiple shows in New Orleans this fall, and producing and headlining the long-running MNOP Festival (Music of New Orleans Perigueux), in Perigueux, France. All this in advance of hitting the road with Mike Zito this October/November, to promote their Ruf Records releases in the U.S. and Europe.
