While growing up in Miami, Katriva Tabitha Riggins was instilled with a love for music. Her parents’ record collection included R&B, soul, gospel, hip-hop, country, and rock ‘n’ roll. Her primary influences soon became Nina Simone, Tina Turner, Etta James, and Koko Taylor. Riggins landed a gig singing jazz and blues standards at a lounge in Sunny Isles, Florida, and in 2011 toured Asia and the Middle East with a top-40 cover band. She recorded her debut album, Lily Rose, in 2014. Riggins opened the 2016 Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk Blues Festival and later that year released her highly anticipated sophomore effort, Blues Revival, on Bluzpik Records. She followed up with 2018’s In the Boys Club, also on Bluzpik, and dedicated the album to the early blues women who first busted down the clubhouse door. Follow-up recordings include 2020’s Cry Out, 2022’s Progeny, and 2024’s Revival. This is Riggins’ seventh album overall.

Lead vocalist Riggins is accompanied by lead guitarist Erik Guess; multi-instrumentalist Tim Mulberry; backing vocalists Shaelyn Mulberry and Tim Mulberry; and on one track, Timya and Tamia Mulberry. The album was produced by Tim Mulberry at the House of Berry Productions in White Springs, Florida. On all songs, the lyrics are by Riggins while the music is by Tim Mulberry. ‘Revival’ is the sixth full-length album from Kat Riggins, a Miami native whose gritty vocals and powerful singing style are peppered with generous hints of R&B, soul, gospel and rock ‘n’ roll – but deeply rooted in the blues. Ten original songs by Riggins and producer Tim Mulberry are filled with vivid lyricism that showcases the joyous benefits of the blues. Mulberry is also featured on bass, drums, keys and horns; the remaining Revivalists are Eric Guess on guitar with background vocals from Shaelyn Mulberry and Mark Barner.

Kat Riggins, born Katriva Riggins in Miami on February 7, 1980, was raised in a home where music was always the heartbeat. Thanks to her parents’ eclectic tastes, she fell in love with everything from gospel and soul to country, rock, and beyond. But it was the gritty, smoky voices of legends like Koko Taylor, Tina Turner, Nina Simone, Sam Cooke, and Janis Joplin that really spoke to her soul. At 23, Kat landed her first gig, singing jazz and blues standards in a cozy lounge in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida, backed by just a piano. Fast forward, and she’s now rocked stages across the U.S., Southeast Asia, the Dutch Antilles, and throughout Europe. In 2018 and 2019, she took The Netherlands by storm during the Johan Derksen Keeps the Blues Alive tour, wowing sold-out crowds and winning over new blues fans on Dutch prime-time TV shows.

While Kat’s sound is a fresh blend of blues, rock, gospel, and soul, she is undeniably a blues woman. Whether she’s writing uplifting anthems or belting out feel-good grooves, her music is raw, real, and full of heart, just like the blues. Her first releases, the EP Seoul Music and album Lily Rose, hinted at her deep love for the genre, but it was her 2016 project, Blues Revival, that fully declared it. This album is a wild, soulful mix of gospel, rock, and every shade of the blues! Following that declaration, in 2018 Kat self-released In The Boys’ Club, which is a foot stompin’ acknowledgement and appreciation of the power of women in the blues.

In 2020, Kat joined the Gulf Coast Records family, and her debut album with them, Cry Out, earned her a Blues Music Award nomination and snagged two Independent Blues Awards. Her 2022 follow-up, Progeny, made waves too, with another BMA nod and a spot at lucky #13 on the Billboard Blues charts. “When it came to this record, the key words were ‘ACKNOWLEDGE’ and ‘HONOR,’” contemporary blues/soul singer Kat Riggins proclaims about her new CD, Progeny, releasing June 24th on Gulf Coast Records. “I have always tried to share music in a very transparent and vulnerable way and I’ve learned that I do this most successfully when I connect that little girl that I used to be to the woman that I’m becoming. I mean, when I remember things like how my Mama spoke her heart or how my Daddy’s voice made me feel when he sang Sam Cooke, it empowers me to be wide open and still feel safe. That sentiment is what I needed to acknowledge and honor with this project!”

To bring Kat Riggins’ musical vision to life on the new album, Gulf Coast Records founder/guitarist Mike Zito assembled a sparkling list of talented musicians to back Kat’s powerful, sassy vocals, including Zito, himself, on guitars, Matthew Johnson on drums, Doug Byrkit on bass guitar, and Lewis Stephens on keyboards, augmented with special guests Melody Angel on guitar (“Woahman”), Albert Castiglia on guitar (“My City”) and Busta Free on rap break (“My City”).

Dr. Maya Angelou said, “You can’t really know where you are going until you know where you have been.” With this album, Kat Riggins chose to honor that belief by paying tribute to her upbringing. In 12 original songs and a single a cappella gospel interlude, Kat kept with that theme and allowed her Spirit and spirit guides to have complete control when writing these songs. Progeny is compiled of songs about love, pain, passion and anger. It’s Kat’s personal testimony of strength, peace, joy, God and so much more!

These songs run the gamut between sweet soul-blues ballads to high-energy blues- rockers, with Kat’s M.O. the same throughout. Whether it’s a blues-funk party scene that moves your booty or a heart- breaking soul stirrer that moves your spirit, Kat wrote these songs to move the listener from a place of truth!

Kat says the fact that by definition, “Progeny” means, “a descendent or descendants of” made it the perfect one word synopsis of the album. Songs like, “In My Blood” and “Warriors” are prime examples of this homage. In “Warriors,” the statement is that no matter what we might face in this life, we won’t face it alone. There are songs about hindsight, about greed and about faith. There’s something for the sweet, sultry, ballad lover who craves a soft, slow groove. Then, there are the high energy movin’ and groovin’ numbers like, “My City” and “Espresso,” a hip-shakin’ song about how the singer’s Love keeps her heart skipping beats.

Mrs. Riggins explains, “Overall, Progeny is an acknowledgment of my human existence so far, and with it I hope to honor ancestors like my mother and elders like my father. Now that I’m in my 40s it seems that those two words come up a lot in my conversations with myself. Each time they do, I see a little more growth.”

The album Cry Out, produced by Mike Zito, is Kat Riggins' debut album on the label. Cry Out is a collection of the original contemporary blues songs that hope to encourage the listener to be an active participant in life. On occasion, a surprise artist stands out amongst the records which arrive for review consideration. Kat Riggins is a blues singer whose Blues Revival had a tendency to beckon for an encore after the first few tracks were played, to reaffirm what was being heard. As most recordings today employ an array of studio musicians, rare is the working band where such a gifted vocalist as Riggins is paired with an expressive guitarist as Darrell Raines, who shines brightly on this production. Rounded out by drummer Doc Allison and George Caldwell on bass, this is an exceptional group that knows how to play the blues.

Kat Riggins, hails from Miami, and has steadily paid her dues, while building an audience around South Florida, even taking her music around the world. She released her first EP "Seoul Music", a compilation of blues covers, during a 2011 Asian tour; delved more into writing on "Lily Rose" released in 2014, and penned all but two on this current release.

They open the set with the up-tempo burner "Now I See (Ooh Wee)" Riggins defining her turf from the onset, augmented by a honking tenor sax courtesy of Stephen Lombardelli. The pace drops dramatically on "Good Girl Blues," allowing ample room to stretch her vocal character. Raines comes in nice and easy on this track, showing impeccable tone and technique. He returns with enthusiasm on the suave intro of "Wail Away," and displays flashes of brilliance in the solo. This song is the perfect vehicle for Raines, as it is about a woman digging on the guitarist at a steamy juke joint. The fascination with the blues scene continues on the autobiographical "Music Fiend."

"Queen Bee", is a hard driving shuffle, Riggins singing about who she is, and then reworks Etta James' "Blues Is My Business" with determined authority. The other cover is the perpetual Sam Cooke classic "Change Is Gonna Come", a song recognized as a singers song, for one has to have the pipes to interpret accurately. Riggins not only passes the test, but takes us to church and back along the way. The vocal and guitar interaction on "The Devil Is A Liar" is as good as it gets, the moans and wails spiraling into whirlpool of lamentation.

Halfway through the record is the strategically placed "Murphy's Law", a powerful southern fried chord attack where Riggins bares her soul, testifying about taking back her freedom, and picking up the pieces. This is where she slips it into that special sanctuary where only truthful singers need venture, genuine talent required, something Kat Riggins and Blues Revival has in spades. /James Nadal, All About Jazz

Riggins released her first full length album “Lily Rose” in 2014.

In February 2016 Riggins opened the Fort Lauderdale Riverwalk Blues Festival. In August of that year she released her highly anticipated Kat Riggins Blues Revival album also on Bluzpik. The album received rave reviews.

This is Riggins’ third studio recording. Currently the band is Riggins, vocals; Darrell Raines, guitars and keyboard; George Caldwell, bass; and Johnnie Hicks, drums. Guest musicians include Josh Rowand, Albert Castiglia and Clay Goldstein. All songs are written and produced by Riggins and arranged by the band unless otherwise noted. The album was recorded at the 42nd Street Studios in Fort Lauderdale.

The first two tracks, “Try Again” and the fantastic “Troubles Away” were arranged by the band along with guest guitarist Josh Rowand. On these Rowand plays lead; on the latter Rowand takes a finger pickin’ solo while Riggins sings “I feel like drinkin’ my troubles away”. Included on the inside panels are two cool photos taken by photographer Sebastian Santiago; one of Riggins downing a shot of liquor, while the other is of her smokin’ a cigar.

Caldwell’s bass opens “Second To None”, another great song, this time featuring Raines on both guitar and on a keyboard simulating a horn section. “Don’t Throw Me Away” is a well written slower blues.

Albert Castiglia plays lead guitar and shares the vocal on “Kitty Won’t Scratch” which was arranged by him and the band. This song could receive a lot of airplay.

Harpist Clay Goldstein plays on the rockin’ “Johnnie Walker”; on “Live On” and on the closer “A Girl In The Boys’ Club”.

The diminutive Riggins dedicates the album to all the blues women who first busted down the door to this “Boys’ club”. Her trajectory is that of a rising star. ~Richard Ludmerer
