bLOW is Colin Linden’s fourteenth solo album, following the first, Colin Linden Live, by forty years. It is his first electric blues record.

bLOW will bring you to the dance floor, or up your highway speed by ten or fifteen mph, but it’s also worth listening to in a more contemplative way. Most classic blues songs were written by more than one person over more than a few decades, and that’s what gives them their gravity. Colin has steeped himself in this tradition, on advice he got, at age eleven, from Howling Wolf: if you want to play this music, listen to the people I listened to. On 78 records, you might think, but a lot of those old bluesmen were still around in the 1970s, so Colin got to know and learn from Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, Muddy Waters, Johnny Shines,Blind John Davis, Son House, and Robert, and Sam Chatmon, who invited him to Mississippi andgot him started on his first journey through the South.

Better known as a roots/blues producer/sideman for Sue Foley, Janiva Magness, the Band, Bruce Cockburn, and Lucinda Williams than for his work as part of Blackie & the Rodeo Kings or a handful of stylish solo albums, Colin Linden seems -- at least on the surface -- to function most effectively as a supporting player. But judging by the few discs under his own name, he deserves recognition as a talented artist, often as impressive as those he works with. That's the case with Southern Jumbo, an impressive set that illustrates Linden's soulful bluesy Americana. If that sounds like it also describes Canadian musical soulmates the Band and Blue Rodeo, both of whom he has worked with, it comes as little surprise that those acts are a helpful reference point for Linden's similar approach. In fact, this album's "Train Left an Hour Ago" could easily be mistaken for a Band outtake. Recorded in Memphis, Toronto, and Nashville, Southern Jumbo successfully meshes a roots rocking Canadian sound with soulful Southern grit. Linden's dusky voice -- somewhat like the Band's Richard Manuel -- perfectly frames his songs, many of which concern death, dying, and an acknowledgement of mortality. But the project is far from a downer, and several songs like the frisky deep Delta blues of "Dog Catcher," the peppy, horn-enhanced "I Give Up," and the retro R&B of "Bucket of Soul" show Linden's lighter side. Contributions from the incomparable Memphis Horns and veteran keyboardist Richard Bell help the sound enormously, injecting a bluesy sensibility to everything they touch. Not surprisingly, Linden's classy production brings a breezy, open soundscape to capture these tunes. His own acoustic and electric guitar lines weave through the songs, importing a swampy, bluesy texture and making tracks such as the touching "This Is Me" vibrant, supple, and elegant. A gifted artist who deserves as much attention as those he produces and backs up, Colin Linden combines the various sides of his personalities on the impressive Southern Jumbo. ~Hal Horowitz

From the title of Colin Linden's CD, you might think he was trying his hand at country music. However, the title track is a classic blues by Sleepy John Estes. With Larry Taylor on bass and Stephen Hodges on drums, Linden adopts a largely acoustic traditional approach such as on 1930's bluesman Bo Carter's (Mississippi Sheiks) tune "Go Back Old Devil." On Blind Willie McTell's "Broke Down Engine" Linden looses a slow mournful howl with Hodges heavy on the brushes. By track 4, Linden pens an original tune, "Nowhere to Go," that's given very similar treatment with fast picking blues guitar. One of my favorite tracks on the set is "A True Friend Won't Let You Drown" that Linden writes with Gary Nicholson. Its slower tempo fits with the emotionally powerful lyric, "When I see my brother suffer, lost in the mighty storm; And I know the light is fading and the dark is raging on, I want to reach out and save him from the water pouring down." Linden mines T-Bone Burnett's CD "The True False Identity" and casts "There Would Be Hell to Pay" into a blues ballad about love & violence. Linden covers 1920s/30s slide guitar blues master Tampa Red's "You Can't Get That Stuff No More" that is an upbeat blues shuffle. Linden's own instrumental "Paramount" is a sweet acoustic guitar blues with plenty bounce per ounce. Linden makes a Charley Jordan tune, "Keep It Clean," with a fast acoustic blues guitar style, sound very similar to some of Chris Smither's early blues covers filled with contagious joy. Son House's "Dry Spell Blues" offers more slide guitar pyrotechnics. Blind Willie Johnson's "Trouble Will Soon Be Over" is a stately blues spiritual. The last track is labeled with a French Louisiana word "lagniappe" that means a small gift and is the emotional weeper "Tears Come Rolling Down," "She kissed me goodnight, but Lord I know she meant goodbye." This track is by senior bluesman Henry Townsend that's sung by Townsend on Kenny Wayne Shepard's newest release. On Canada's True North label, "Easin' Back to Tennessee" is an excellent traditional acoustic blues set by this master musician. ~Lee Armstrong

Effectively honoring an amazing song from an amazing performer requires that you kick against the grass marking the steps of the master. Cash's country music re-oriented toward its blues element gives kickers a general direction for a collection hitting more shin than soupçon. Paul Reddick's "Train of Love" whirs into life on its master tape capstan and jumps track 13 seconds in a show of off-roading; "I have wondered," he ponders in the liner notes, "how things might have been if Johnny had hired Mississippi Fred McDowell (Luther Perkins is chopped liver?) as the guitar player for the Tennessee Three." Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown joins forces with Benjy Davis to swing out "Get Rhythm," taking turns sounding agreeably road-wearied. Chris Thomas King tunes his 12-string guitar "down to B flat standard, which is the way Leadbelly played it," and recasts "Rock Island Line" as a talking blues, which it almost was anyway, then skates away on the train engineer's cheer at cheating the toll (though no one ever asks whether the burned toll man's waiting for him on the return trip). Faced with doing over a perfect song with a perfect arrangement, Garland Jeffreys brilliantly deduces that a little more makes a lot more, and filigrees "I Walk the Line" in accordion and a more pronounced "boom-chicka-boom." Harry Manx's "Long Black Veil" shimmers under his predictable but effective slide guitar and surprising touches of Indian instrumentation, plus desperate gospel-fueled backing vocals, stripping finality from tone, turning the song over into an unsolved mystery. OK, Alvin Youngblood Hart doesn't sound like he knows what he's doing on "Sunday Morning Coming Down"; he asks "Well, who hasn't been there?" in the notes, and the problem is he sounds like almost everybody else who's been there. But then along comes Sleepy LaBeef, sounding like his voice went down one half-step for each of his 68 years, singing "Frankie's Man Johnny" like no one ever told him it wasn't his. Don't settle for walking if you can swoosh. ~Andrew Hamlin

Acclaimed eight-time Juno Award-winning singer/guitarist Colin Linden releases, Rich in Love on September 25, 2015. The new CD marks a return to the same label that released Colin’s first studio album, The Immortals, in 1986, and also represents his first new studio recording since From the Water in 2009. Colin Linden’s last album was a live recording released in 2011.

Sporting a beautiful cover designed by Jim Sherraden of Nashville’s famed Hatch Show Print, Rich in Love was produced, recorded and performed by Colin Linden (guitars, vocals, ukuleles and mandolins) and his band, affectionately known as The Rotting Matadors: John Dymond on bass and Gary Craig on drums. Special guests include multiple Blues Music Award-winner and six-time Grammy nominee Charlie Musselwhite on harmonica, legendary keyboardist Reese Wynans (Stevie Ray Vaughan), Amy Helm (Levon Helm, Ollabelle) on harmony vocals and organist Tim Lauer (Rodney Crowell, Keb’ Mo’, Allison Moorer, Lady Antebellum).

Linden, a long-time Nashville resident, and the two members of his band have been playing together for over 25 years, and it shows on Rich in Love, which sparkles with their seamless musicianship and collective talents. Colin Linden’s singing is fresh, emotional and engaging. The songs transport the listener through lustful encounters, remorse-laden retrospectives and forlorn longing, while the music takes influences from blues, country rock and roots. And then there is the playing, where every guitar pluck, bass note, subtle drum sweep or organ solo from this consummate musician and his band adds to the stories. It is a truly captivating package, a polished roots diamond, a treasure to reflect on and restore the soul.

Colin Linden wears more hats than you’d find at a Royal wedding, and we’re not just talking about the trademark big black hat he favours on and offstage. This musical Renaissance man is indeed a multiple threat - as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer. He is in major demand by artists wanting him to produce, write for, and/or play on their records, yet somehow finds time to both pursue a prolific solo career and play a key role in Canadian roots-rock supergroup Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

If forced at the proverbial gunpoint to come up with just one self-defining phrase, chances are he’d come up with “bluesman.” The form that first stirred Colin’s musical soul nearly four decades ago sustains him still. Easin’ Back To Tennessee, his ninth solo album, represents the fullest consummation of a lifelong love affair.

“I’ve been playing country blues, ‘20s style acoustic blues, since I was a really little kid,” the 46-year-old Linden explains. “When I was 11, I met [electric blues pioneer] Howlin’ Wolf. One of the things he said to me that really got me onto this path was that ‘if you want to play this kind of music you should listen to the people I listened to.’ He told me about Charlie Patton and Son House and that generation of artists. That was like opening the biggest door in the world for me, so I just dug in deep. I listened to it and have been playing it seriously for 32 years now.”

Colin’s thorough and committed exploration of the blues is, he explains, “at the core of everything I do. If I’m playing guitar on a Lee Ann Womack record or playing with Bruce Cockburn, I’m still thinking of Son House and Charlie Patton and Blind Blake. That is the foundation, the deepest root for everything that I do.”

Of how many artists can it be said that they’re getting better, 33 years into their recording career? Colin Linden can certainly be considered a member of that select club based on From The Water, the 11th solo album in a storied career that has also featured his work on literally hundreds of other records. At last count, the total of albums on which he has played stood at over 300, while at least 70 albums bear the ‘Produced by Colin Linden’ credit.

Linden is a genuine renaissance man of roots music. He’s a singer and songwriter of great skill, an in-demand and prolific record producer ( Bruce Cockburn, Tom Wilson, Colin James), a sideman to the stars as guitarist for the likes of Bruce Cockburn, Emmylou Harris, and Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, and, for the past decade, a member of the highly successful trio, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

Colin’s songs have been covered by The Band, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Keb’ Mo’, and Colin James, and his well-stocked trophy case includes seven Juno, multiple Maple Blues Awards, and a Toronto Arts Award. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for the star-studded A Tribute To Howlin’ Wolf CD, and was involved in the ground-breaking O Brother Where Art Thou phenomenon. Linden has a well-deserved reputation as a slide guitar virtuoso of real originality, and his riveting slide work can be heard both on albums from such artists as Cassandra Wilson, The Rankin Family, Whitey Johnson and on his own sizeable solo catalogue.

Colin’s multi-faceted talents coalesce in truly compelling fashion on From The Water. This is a stylistically more diverse work than his previous outing, 2007’s easin’ back to tennessee. That acclaimed disc served as an homage to the acoustic country blues style that was the crucial inspiration for the Toronto-born and raised, Nashville-based Linden in his musically formative years.

From The Water can also be viewed as an homage of sorts. Colin’s long-time musical collaborator and closest friend, legendary keyboardist Richard Bell, passed away in 2007, and his spirit is omnipresent here. The dynamic duo played on over 100 albums together (more than 40 of them Linden productions), including records by The Band, Bruce Cockburn, Lucinda Williams, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings and Colin James.

This album began to take shape in the winter of 2012. While auditioning a number of live recordings I had not yet listened to, I came across a tape made on December 9, 2000 at a club called “Chicago’s” on Queen Street - now long gone. It was the last gig I played as a resident of Toronto. We had emptied the house, packed the U-Haul and were ready to leave for Nova Scotia the next day. Many long-time friends and musicianers attended the show, and I was happy, excited, and blissfully unaware of the tape rolling, which resulted in a loose, relaxed night of fun. Unfortunately, a huge snowstorm prevented our departure the following day, and while parked overnight, my van was broken into and eight guitars were stolen, leaving me with one - “Old Red” - my trusty Supro.

This recording documents the last night I played with “Old Tan” – my 1957 Fender Duo-Sonic which had served me well for almost 30 years. The Toronto Blues Society and the blues community came together and staged a benefit which resulted in the acquisition of a guitar made by my friend Joe Yanuziello. It is my main instrument today and was used for the studio part of this record. I chose six songs from the live recording, then booked a day at The Rogue Studios in Toronto and recorded eight new tracks. My old pal David Wilcox was happy to play when I invited him down - until that day in the studio, we had not played together for 37 years ! Colin Linden continues to be a great friend and supporter, and I was so glad he could whup some guitar on my tribute to Hubert Sumlin, as Colin and I share a long history of love for the Howlin’ Wolf’s music.

So… this disc has some new original songs, as well as a glimpse into a typical night of live performance, graced by a couple of old friends who sat in…. I hope you enjoy it. ~Morgan
