Dana Gillespie:
After 45 years in music and over 60 albums Dana Gillespie is well qualified to sing the blues. A career that combined radio, theatre, film and sport (she was once British junior water-skiing champion) with music, Dana has been in the public eye since recording her first album at the age of 15. Her music has evolved from folk in the 60s through 70s Bowie-esque glam-rock to the raunchy in-your-face blues she performs today.

Dana Gillespie has been dedicated to the blues from an early age: "I discovered the blues when I went to the American Folk Blues Festival in 1962 and also to see the Yardbirds at the Marquee Club. I was in my early teens and hadn't heard anything like it before - blues wasn't easily available in the UK back then". Bessie Smith especially inspired her because of her combination of sly, funny and bawdy lyrics. "Blues was my first musical love because it's earthy, spiritual and honest."

Mojo Blues Band is centered around Erik Trauner, representing a music community of musicians who are passionate for the blues, and they have made the exotic language of the blues to their own. Comparitive to a second hand mother language with all their dialects are the traditional Chicago Blues just as well as swinging R&B and rolling boogie woogie.

The band attempts to create a homogeneous sound. Not the endless soloing of the individual musician, but the question/answering dialogue between the instruments, have priority. A concert with the Mojo Blues Band is always a dynamic suspenseful, hot to cold tub of feelings, with humor in between.

In international competition, countries generally define themselves by the brands associated with that country that enjoy a high global reputation. Austria is not blessed with too many such brands, especially when it comes to popular contemporary music. But, as always, exceptions prove the rule. What Kruder & Dorfmeister were and are to downbeat, Joe Zawinul to jazz, or Falco to pop, the Mojo Blues Band is undoubtedly to the blues. No other Austrian group enjoys the same status in the world of twelve-bar music as the Viennese band led by mastermind Erik Trauner. In 1977, an unparalleled success story began in legendary jazzland, brimming with integrity and authenticity, but also with cross-genre hits. In this sense, the Mojo Blues Band is exquisite, living proof of the attitude of the grand master of post-war blues, Luther Allison, who once stated that the blues is "not a matter of race, color, or origin." Because, of course, the cradle of the MBB was not in the Mississippi Delta, but in the center of our home capital. This requires all the more tenacity, assertiveness, and talent if you want to succeed on the international stage. Some say a little bit of craziness is also part of it. There might be some truth to all of this when you start out in Vienna's 8th district and ultimately inspire one of the great legends of Chicago blues, Tail Dragger, to enthusiastically exclaim: "They're the blackest white boys I've ever seen!" Erik Trauner has pursued his path over the decades unswervingly, purposefully, and consistently, blending Chicago blues, R&B, and country blues, and selecting his members so that the current lineup of the Mojo Blues Band is always the best of its time. There is no pandering to this, just an unwavering love for the blues and its roots. If Erik Trauner and the Mojo Blues Band were a film, the title could only be "The Untouchables." It's a good thing Austria has such a brand!

The Mojo Blues Band is a blues band from Austria which was formed in 1977 by guitarist Eric Trauner and pianist Joachim Palden. Before 1977, the founders of the band played in clubs of Vienna and in 1977 Palden won a boogie woogie contest. The first prize was a record contract, so they decided to form a band which they named "Mojo Blues Band". Being the only blues band in Vienna they were often booked as backing band for blues artists who were touring in Austria, backing up artists like Johnny Shines, J.B. Hutto, Charlie Musselwhite, Louisiana Red, Sunnyland Slim, Champion Jack Dupree, Homesick James, Honeyboy Edwards, Leon Thomas, Katie Webster, Hal Singer, Jan Harrington and Eddie Clearwater.

In 1980 they teamed up with Dana Gillespie and changed their style more into rhythm 'n blues. At the early 1990s, their song Alligator Walk became a hit in the US Shag (a special dance) scene and following this they toured North and South Carolina. 1989 they visited Chicago and came back with 16 hours of material they had recorded with musicians from Chicago. The CD "The Wild Taste of Chicago" was made out of these tapes. In 1993 Christian Dozzler left the band to form his own group so Eric Trauner had to learn playing the harmonica. /Wikipedia

Thirty-four years after "Alligator Walk," the international flagship of the Austrian blues scene, Erik Trauner's Mojo Blues Band is releasing a vinyl release for the first time. On public demand, so to speak, the vinyl releases of the band, which has concentrated on CDs since 1991, have become sought-after rarities. "Got My Mojo Working" is the Mojo Blues Band's most appreciated performance - live, diverse, enthusiastic, and excellently recorded.

Offering a fresh mix of the group's inexhaustible repertoire, naturally with a generous helping of that Chicago blues that Erik Trauner and his band celebrated in the Windy City with the old heroes of the blues, such as the legendary Taildragger. The compilation of all previously unreleased recordings on "Got My Mojo Working" was curated by Erik Trauner and Didi Mattersberger themselves, with the vinyl mastering done by Andreas Wingert. "Got My Mojo Working" will be released exclusively on vinyl.

It had passed our door almost unnoticed, but the Austrian blues band Mojo Blues Band has existed for 40 years !!! And to celebrate that memorable fact, this live recorded double album has been released.
The band was founded in 1977 by guitarist Erik Tauner. Since the band was one of the few blues bands from Vienna, she was often used as backing band of blues artists in Austria, such as Katie Webster, J.B. Hutto and Charlie Musselwhite. In 1980 the band also worked with singer Dana Gillespie.

After many line-ups, the band currently consists of the aforementioned guitarist Erik Tauner, who can also handle the harmonica quite well, and Siggi Fass (vocals, guitar), Charlie Furthner (piano), Herfried Knapp (standing bass) and drummer Didi Mattersberger.

The jubilee concert was a very nice party. The experience bursts off this band. It is a real pleasure to come across a relaxed swinging, solid blues band from Europe again.
At a party, of course, no guests may be missing! The first guest is singer Gisele Jackson, who previously sang in bands like One Way Street and Nightlife. Her very soulful voice can be heard in the classic Further On Up The Road, known by Bobby "Blue" Bland, which has a smoothly bopping performance here. She also takes a song from the soul / blues giant Big Maybelle. My Country Man is a nice soulful rhythm & blues song that swings lightly. Later on the album, we meet Gisele in the rocking The Pick Up with a leading role for the boogie woogie piano by Charlie Furthner and Trouble In Mind, which is also known by Bertha "Chippie" Hill. Guest number two is the American singer-guitarist John Primer, who puts an unadulterated Chicago blues sound in You Got To Pay The Price.
Call Me John Primer is then a raw Chicago blues with the yawing harmonica of Erik Tauner in the lead. The last guest is the Austrian singer Petra Toyfl, whom we already met on a solo album by Erik Tauner. She can be heard in the Ruth Brown song As Long As I'm Movin 'and the lazy shuffle Nothing In Ramblin'.
The rest of the album is for the Mojo Blues Band itself. They provide a feast of recognition through a number of well-executed covers. Like the Fats Domino song Sick And Tired, a New Orleans shuffle with hot grunting horns.
Dust My Broom by Elmore James is of course well-known and in this cover the mean slide by Erik Tauner is central. Long Distance Call is a cover of Muddy Waters. A slow Chicago blues with many guitar injections. Chuck Berry's Promised Land rocks with our Austrian friends in the best Blues Band style while Your Next Lover reminded me of Flavium's "NIght Life".
The party album is completely closed in style with the outrageously swinging Tattle Tale with pianist Charlie Furthner in the lead.

The Mojo Blues Band's preference for Swamp Blues and Cajun music eventually led to the invitation of musicians from Louisiana and Mississippi to Austria in 1992. Both Johnnie Allen and Harry Simoneaux, two authentic Cajuns are experienced war-horses from Lafayette, as well as Jimmy Anderson, one of the last living Swamp Blues musicians were on their list of guests. Jimmy who now lives in Natchez, Mississippi had a few local hits in the early 60's but then retired from the music business later to be rediscovered by Johnnie Allen - "Ambassador of Swamp Pop" in 1991".

In March 1993 the band followed the call of the blues to Chicago for a second time. There on the Westside, the Mojos met up with many colourful personalities. Among them was Little Mac Simmons, who had gained a reputation as a singer and harmonica player in the 60's. With him they recorded his brand new track "Inflation Blues". In this song he praises the then new President of the U.S., Bill Clinton and expresses the hope of the American people for economic growth and social innovation.

Notes: This album present recordings during a three weeks stay of the Mojo Blues Band in Chicago, undoubtedly the blues metropol of the United States. Without actually having planned such a project the band decided on a spontaneous recording session.

Erik Trauner, Christian Dozzler, Markus Toyfl and Dani Gugolz experienced Chicago "live". They were invited to barbecues in the heart of the South Side, encountered living blues legends, had memorable wild jam-parties in the back yards of terrace- houses and spent long nights in black blues clubs.

Even though only little can still be heard of traditional blues in Chicago, the "Mojos" consistanly strayed in its persuit until they made the aquaintance of several musicians who may be the last of their kind.

The Mojo Blues Band invited such musicians as Willie Kent, A.C. Reed, Taildragger, Big 'Mojo' Elem and Timothy Taylor to their recording session at ACME-studios in Southport Street.

In a 16-hours-marathon recording session the different cultures, languages and mentalities melted into one another to become a friendly whole - all made possible by the common love of music. Inspiration for the title came from a gigantic gourmet fair, named "The Taste Of Chicago", presenting local restaurants and organized at the time by the City of Chicago.

Consequently, this album can be regarded as an acoustic delicacy. Furthermore this record documents the first bridge between musicians of Chicago and Vienna in the history of the blues.
