Deep, inescapable grooves, swampy tremolo-soaked guitars, gritty-voiced harmonies… That is the soul tradition, those are the footprints that Soulstack follows in...

Soulstack was formed in 2011 by frontman Jonathan Knight (Wickens-Knight) and keyboardist Mark Wessenger. The band consists of drummer Tom Bona (Sue Foley, Colin James), and bassists Darryl “Harpo” Peterson (David Wilcox) and Josh Knight and most recently, baritone Guitarist Chris Latta.

Their 2012 Debut release “Big Red” garnered outstanding critical reviews. It received extensive airplay and charted #2 on the Roots Music Report tracking terrestrial radio airplay nationally for Folk/Roots/Blues. The album hit #18 for Galaxie Radio Play for 2012 and has appeared on a number of “best of” lists for 2012. “Since you Came Around” was selected as CBC RadioONE’s - HERE AND NOW “Song of the Week”

Soulstack received a 2014 Maple Blues Award nomination for “Electric Act of the Year” and “Drummer of the Year” and was nominated for an Independent Music Award (IMA) for 2013. The band performed in 2013 at Canada’s largest blues/roots-centric music festivals, including Montreal Jazz, Mont Tremblant, Kitchener Blues, as well as recently headlining The El Mocambo in Toronto where the band recorded the dynamic performance to the packed room.

Five Finger Discount is Soulstack’s sophomore album, engineered again by Jeremy Darby (Keith Richards, Smokey Robinson, Prince), combining poignant lyricism and sweet vocal harmony with the rhythm and grit of traditional blues. Self-produced, it tracks the organic evolution of the band as it continues growing in musical breadth and depth. It recently charted at #3 in Canada and #9 in North America for Blues on RootsMusicReport.com and has already received a substantial amount of positive press for the innovative album.

Jon Knight and Soul Stack are the latest arrivals from a seemingly growing blues scene in Canada; hailing out of Ontario, the blues quartet made up of Jon Knight (singer, guitarist), Tom Bona (drums), Mark Wessenberg (keys) and Josh Knight (bass guitar) made the album in two days, which shows in the free flowing, seemingly improvised roots music that makes the album a great listen. Soul Stack has produced a truly great, soft, easy listening blues album.

The core style of the album is roots blues as every song feels like a throwback to the old style of the blues, which the band refreshingly bring back to us with tracks like “Stone Cold Man,” “Since You Came Around,” and “In Your Mind.” All these tracks are harmonized expertly by the entire band and have splendid flowing technique.

Musically this album is great; every member of the band plays their part competently sounding like a well seasoned band. It’s effortless, absorbing and extremely well executed blues with a number of influential music styles, which makes the album flow magnificently with each song as good as the last. Big Red is the most soulful album of the year so far and a must for everyone to have on their summer playlist. ~Josh May

Canada based Soulstack presents their sophomore effort with their new album titled Five Finger Discount. Soulstack is fronted by Jon Knight on guitar and vocals. Knight also produced Five Finger Discount. Knight shares songwriting duties with Mark Wessenger who also plays keys. Tom Bona and Josh Knight both return on drums and bass respectively. Five Finger Discount features the addition of Chris Latta on guitar and Harpo Peterson on bass. All members contribute to vocals throughout the album as well.

All of the tracks on Five Finger Discount sound well polished and passionate. There is not a track that comes to mind as a weak track and it’s tough to pick a clear cut favorite. Five Finger Discount is definitely an enjoyable listen. Soulstack had a clear mission with what they wanted to do with this album and I think it’s safe to say their mission was accomplished. ~Alysha Rendflesh
