Carl Sonny Leyland and Lluís Coloma, two of the most original and creative Blues & Boogie Woogie pianists, are joining in a new two-piano project!

Lluís and Carl met almost 20 years ago at the Boogie Woogie Festival in LaRoquebrou, France, considered one of the most important festivals of this piano style. Serious connoisseurs of the Blues piano language and related genres, these two pianists are regulars at Jazz and Blues festivals on the international scene, where their paths have crossed numerous times. After several years of mutual admiration, they decided to record an album with the prestigious record label Fresh Sound Records.

From a very young age, both were touched by Rock & Roll. Initially drawn to the piano by the fascinating rhythms of Boogie Woogie, they were then compelled to explore the more obscure Blues styles that lead back to the origins of that genre. From here, their repertoires expanded to include Ragtime, Barrelhouse, and Stride Piano, including the regional styles of New Orleans, Chicago, Kansas City, and other significant locales.

Concerning their own musical language, Lluis & Sonny like to fuse styles, respecting tradition but incorporating new elements in a truly organic and natural way. Each are composers and individually have a very defined and personal sound.

The duets of Leyland and Coloma contain a great dose of creativity, spontaneity, virtuosity, improvisation, and musical dialogue, transporting the listener to unexpected places full of magic and complexity. The result is an innovative mix of tradition and modernity.

Carl Sonny Leyland was born & raised on the South Coast of England, growing up close to the city of Southampton. As a child he was drawn to the American music which he heard on LP records his father would play. It was here that he developed an appreciation for Dixieland jazz, the rock & roll of the 1950s & the country music of Jimmie Rodgers & Hank Williams.

At age 15 Leyland discovered boogie woogie when he heard a school friend working through a written arrangement of a tune called JD's Boogie Woogie (Marvin Wright). Captivated by the sound of the repeating 8 to the bar left hand pattern, Leyland was inspired to go to the piano & begin on a path that would become his life's purpose. Within 3 months he would be performing in public & shortly after would become a member of a respected local group "The Bob Pearce Blues Band." Initially influenced by boogie woogie greats Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson & Meade 'Lux' Lewis, Leyland went on to fully explore the piano blues genre, becoming an authority on early & obscure styles such as those played by Cow Cow Davenport, Little Brother Montgomery, Montana Taylor & Speckled Red to name a few.

In 1988 Leyland had the opportunity to come to the USA. This initial visit to New Orleans inspired him to relocate to that city where he would spend the next nine years. During that time he was active on the club scene, quickly gaining a reputation for his authentic blues & early rock & roll stylings. Also, he toured with the Dallas based band Anson Funderburgh & the Rockets whose line up included blues great Sam Myers. In 1997, feeling the need for a change, Leyland relocated to Southern California. He joined Big Sandy & His Flyrite Boys, the well known rockabilly & western swing group & toured with them for over three years.

By this time his repertoire had expanded to include ragtime & early jazz styles which enabled him to become part of the traditional jazz scene around Los Angeles & San Diego. In June of 2003 the Carl Sonny Leyland Trio was formed with drummer Hal Smith & bassist Marty Eggers. There was such a natural synergy between the three musicians that a recording of their first performance was good enough to issue on a cd (Broadway Boogie - now out of print) Their versatile combination has proven successful over the years. They have recorded seven cds to date (including a collaboration with Nathan James & Ben Hernandez) & continue to work steadily on the festival scene. (Jeff Hamilton replaced Hal Smith as drummer). Leyland has also continued his involvement with the rockabilly scene & plays each year in the backing band at Viva Las Vegas & more recently at the Rockabilly Rave USA. In this capacity he has worked with such notables as Janis Martin, Ruth Brown, Billy Lee Riley & Carl Mann.

Whether playing solo or with his trio, Leyland's playing displays an infectious spontaneity, providing plenty of surprises for the listener. While he possesses the necessary vocabulary to pay tribute to the greats of old, he refuses to be limit himself to this & prefers to let each performance be an opportunity to say something new.

Charlie Musselwhite says "Harpdog Brown is all blues man!"

My good friend Harpdog Brown has a new CD out. He’s got a smokin’ band playing and he’s singing the real deal, old school blues just like you want to hear it. It’s easy to tell from listening that Harpdog knows what he’s doing and loves what he’s doing. I’m not applauding this CD just because I happen to have the honor of joining Harpdog on a tune…it really is some great smokin’ blues. Every tune is a winner. If you love the blues you won’t go wrong with this wonderful session. I LOVE the killer guitar playing! It’s hard to say what my favorite is but I gotta say I REALLY like Must’ve Been The Devil. I’ve always liked that tune and Harpdog does it great. I love his harp playing on this one especially. Home Is Where The Harp Is has a cool 8-bar blues groove and I love 8-bar blues progression. Fool Like Me, Hayward Boogie, Cloud Full Of Rain, Fine Little Girl, are all fine and For Better or Worse has especially good lyrics. What’s Your Name has some tasty first position harp playing. All in all I think you have a very satisfying album on your hands. I really enjoy listening to it again and again. The tune I did with Harpdog, Moose On The Loose, was a lot of fun. It’s got a good feel and good energy and I remember the fun we had recording it. Give it a listen. I hope hope you can hear the fun like I can. It was recorded the old school way…right off the floor….with fine old tube amps and the works…at Big Jon Atkinson’s studio, Bigtone in Hayward, CA. Jon knows how the blues are supposed to sound and he totally captured that sound with Harpdog and his great band. ~Charlie Musselwhite
