Don Vilanova Botafogo - 2 albums: Blues, Blues, Blues Y Mas Blues / Live In Hollywood 99

Miguel "Botafogo" Vilanova was born on February 7, 1956. He started playing classical guitar at age 9 and at 12 he had his first electric guitar. His professional debut was at age 17 with Pappo's Blues. From there he participated in Engranaje, Avalancha (records a single), Carolina and Studebaker.

Between 1977 and 1984 he settled in Madrid (Spain) where he joined, among others, the group Cucharada (they record the album El limpiabotas that wanted to be a bullfighter); Joaquín Sabina (recorded Vice versa); Antonio Flores (recorded Antonio, At sundown, and music for the film Colegas); Mariscal Romero (recorded Radio Zumo). He also played, along with Pappo, Micky, Ramoncín, Kevin Ayers, David Whiskey and Ciro Fogliata. On his return to Argentina form Durazno de Gala (recorded seven albums). At the same time he joined the bands of Rinaldo Rafanelli, Miguel Cantilo, Vitico, Pappo's Blues, Las Blacanblus, Los Guarros and Javier Calamaro.

In 1995 Botafogo began his solo career, which already has four recordings released by Distribuidora Belgrano Norte - "Trío" (1995), "Botafogo y Amigos" (1997), Cambios (1998), Solo-Acústico (1999). Both with Pappo, with Durazno de Gala, or Botafogo solo, performed as support for BB King (in their presentations in Argentina 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995), James Cotton (1993), Guns & Roses (1993 ), Carlos Santana (1993), Buddy Guy (1995), Scott Henderson (1998) and Jeff Beck (1998). He recorded with Taj Mahal (1994). He acted as a musician for Deacon Jones and Johnny Rivers (on channel 13 for Badia y Compañía). He participated in live bands with blues musicians who visited our country as Hubert Sumlin and Larry Mc Cray.

In July - August of 1997 Botafogo travels to the United States, invited by the harmonica player Bruce Ewan, performing in Twist & Shouts of Washington, sharing the stage with the Carey Bell Chicago Blues Band. Announced as the Great Argentinian Bluesman and accompanied by Iko - Iko Rhythm & Blues Band, he showed his talent in Miami, more exactly on Tabacco Road. He ended his stay at a legendary place in the Blues: Chicago where Buddy Guy's blues club, and finally Blues etcetera, performed at Legends. In the middle of '99 he faces a tour of Japan. Accompanied by bassist Gustavo Gregorio, Australian Alan Tilsley on rhythm guitar and Japanese Hideo Ono on drums, they perform in the cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nakamura, Kochi, Takamatsu, Nagoya and Tokushima. On the way back, he made a stop to record "Live in Hollywood" at Jacks Sugar Shack on Hollywood Boulevard, in Los Angeles, on July 14 of that year. Botafogo was accompanied by the organist Deacon Jones, archetype of the American bluesman. The band was completed by Paul Eckman on bass and Argentine drummer Fabián Jolivet. This boy may hail from Rio, but he plays like he was born and raised in South Oak Cliff, and there is no higher testament a native Texan and lifelong blues freak can give. John Nova Lomax - Music Independent Magazine, Houston-Texas.

When the average fan thinks of hotbeds of the blues, he or she thinks of cities like Chicago, Austin and Memphis, and even such far-flung outposts as London and Paris. That’s all set to change, however, as this red-hot Brazilian guitarist Big Gilson is poised to put Rio de Janeiro on the blues map.

Gilson, TopCat Records and Blues Avenue recording artist, has released thirteen CDs in his native country, and honed his chops the last fourteen years gigging on his own (in South & North America, and also in Europe) and as the opening act for Steve Winwood on his Brazilian tour, Johnny Rivers (70.000 people audience), and twice to the master B.B. King. While touring America, and gigging at such clubs as Florida’s Bamboo Room, New York’s Blue Note, and all over Chi-town, the band knocked out such blues gods as Corey Harries, Duke Robillard, Lonnie Brooks, Magic Slim, Saffire, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, Johnny Winter and Buddy Guy, who extended the Boy from Brazil an open invitation to play his Legends Club anytime.

In 2005 he spent the whole month on May touring in UK and came back there for another tour in September / October this year. In the mean time between those tours in Europe, he toured in the US, performing in four different states in such important venues such as the Blue Note, NY (fifth time), the Bamboo Room, FL (third time) voted four years in the row the best blues club in America, the Tobacco Road (one of the oldest clubs in America, for the fifth time, the best Dallas club, the Deep Ellum Blues among others.

Gilson released, in 2005, LIVE IN TEXAS, a live recording CD produced by veteran player, producer and multiple W.C Handy award winner Richard Chalk, who produced the blues legends Muddy Waters, Freddie King, Big Mama Thornton and Big Joe Turner, among many others. LIVE IN DALLAS was recorded live at the legendary BLUE CAT BLUES club in Dallas, Texas, on September 23rd 1999.

Harmonica player Bruce Ewan is respected as a blues musician in his native town of Washington, D.C., where he has been active musically for more than 25 years and has been called “a harmonica wizard” by the Washington Post. Since 1995, Bruce Ewan has been part of the international blues scene as well, touring Europe and Latin America to great acclaim. In 2003, he and his brother, guitarist Bobby Radcliff, played the Granada Jazz Festival, accompanied by The Blues Blasters, widely regarded as Spain’s top blues band. In the United States, Bruce has shared the stage with artists like John Lee Hooker, Albert Collins, and Carey Bell; recorded with Big Joe & the Dynaflows, and performed in venues from New York to Florida. He has also made joint appearances with his older brother, blues guitarist Bobby Radcliff.

Bruce Ewan’s virtuosity on the harmonica stands out among his peers and competitors. He plays complex solos that combine flurries of notes, changes of tonality, and a keen sense of timing. Thoroughly schooled in the history and traditions of the blues in general and the blues harp in particular, he is a master of both diatonic and chromatic harmonica. His vocals, too, are faithful to the subtleties and nuances of authentic-sounding blues.

Bruce's repertoire is not limited to a rotation of the most common or clichéd blues. Instead, he reaches deep into the blues heritage for an intriguing blend of obscure as well as familiar blues tunes originated by great blues harmonica players. He especially prides himself on his work on the chromatic harmonica, augmenting the “Chicago style” of Little Walter and George “Harmonica” Smith with jazzy inflections.
