The James Hunter Six are back with another sublime offering of no-nonsense rhythm and blues. Recorded and produced by Bosco Mann, Nick of Time is a shining example of how a master song-smith can continually draw fresh water from a bottomless well. In addition to the uptempo, swinging R&B that has put JH6 on the map, Nick of Time explores so much more!

The opening track and lead single, "I Can Change Your Mind", is a beautiful, mid-tempo rumba that tips the hat to the sound of many early King/Federal releases, but executed with a vibrancy that propels the tune into the 21st Century. The lush arrangements on "Till I Hear it from You" and " He's Your Could Have Been" sound like lost tracks from an early '60s Burt Bacharach session.

The straight forward soul of "Brother or Other" (whose timely message is only tantamount to its groove), and the sparse "Paradise for One" (that finds James channeling his innermost Nat King Cole), enrich the album with sounds one may not readily associate with James and Co. - culminating in James' most exciting full-length release to date.

Howlin' Wilf & The Vee-Jays - Cry Wilf!

12. Farther Up The Road (2:31)
13. Can't Stand It No More (3:07)
14. Shake It (2:23)

Under the pseudonym Howlin' Wilf, the artist now known as James Hunter shows that he was always a great singer on this, his debut LP from 1986 - a natural.

Camden Town in the mid-80s fancied itself as a mini Harlem, as a bunch of new bands playing old tunes sprung up around the clubs. Leading the way without a doubt was Howlin’ Wilf and his Vee Jays. With the stunning platinum blond, Dot on second guitar, and a proper stand-up bass slapping out a fat bottom end, the Vee-Jays could rock’n’roll and play rhythm and blues, all at the same time without dropping a beat. When they weren’t featuring in a hot and sweaty club they could be found busking, such was the enthusiasm for getting the word out - and making a bob or two along the way.

Personnel: Howlin' Wilf (James Hunter) (vocals, harmonica, guitar); Stilts McGregor (drums, backing vocals, saucepan); T-Box Tone (string bass); Dot (guitar).

The James Hunter Six - Whatever It Takes

Year : 2018
Bitrate : Flac
Total Time : 27:10
Total Size : 102 MB
Styles: R & B, Soul-Blues
Scans: Front & Back

01. I Don't Wanna Be Without You (03:28)
02. Whatever It Takes (02:53)
03. I Got Eyes (02:17)
04. MM-Hmm (03:13)
05. Blisters (02:46)
06. I Should've Spoke Up (02:30)
07. Show Her (02:36)
08. Don't Let Pride Take You For a Ride (02:32)
09. How Long (02:33)
10. It Was Gonna Be You (02:17)

The sixth album by The James Hunter Six. Hunter had already established himself as a permanent fixture in the world of Rhythm and Soul with his five previous albums, each more poignant and well-executed than the last. However, this record has buried them all. His voice has never been more compelling, his songs never more elegantly crafted.
The delightful interplay between sax and organ on opening track “I Don’t Wanna Be Without You”, topped by Hunter’s rough caress of a voice, announces the superior quality of the nostalgia on display.

“I Got Eyes” is the soundtrack to a slow dance in an old-fashioned below-stairs nightclub, its raw but relaxed arrangement of horns, drums and bass locked into a soft-shoe shuffle. “How Long” finds Hunter and his band in barbershop chorus mode over doo-wop guitar. “It Was Gonna Be You” is both mellow and gritty, an act of dreamy intensity reminiscent of his admirer Van Morrison.

James Hunter - Kick It Around

File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Source: LL (from CD)
Released: 1999
Styles: Blues
Time: 32:54
Size: 75,8 MB
Covers: Full

(1:59) 1. Kick It Around
(2:14) 2. Because You're Mine
(2:18) 3. Mollena
(3:36) 4. It's Easy to Say
(3:03) 5. Lover's Question
(2:18) 6. Better Luck Next Time
(3:09) 7. Strange But True
(2:50) 8. Dearest
(2:03) 9. Believe Me Baby
(2:41) 10. Lover's Prayer
(4:15) 11. Night Bus
(2:21) 12. Tell Her for Me

True, this record is very derivative of late-'50s R&B on the verge of soul. Yet very few people reviving this style several decades after its peak have done it as well, and in as natural and unforced a fashion, as Hunter does on this album. As a vocalist, his reference points are the suave R&B-soul crossover greats Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and Bobby Blue Bland, perhaps with a bit of Clyde McPhatter (McPhatter's hit "Lover's Question" is one of only two covers on the CD). There's some Georgie Fame, too, in the subtle jazz shadings to both the singing and the songwriting. The songs, too, are smooth but urgent numbers that benefit from smoky saxes and some of Hunter's own stinging guitar. There are many R&B revivalists, and Hunter has several legs up on them: He's a genuinely good, assured soul singer who can pen facsimiles of the old classic sounds that are enjoyable in their own right, and he and his backing players understate rather than overstate. It sounds simple, but not many pull it off. -- Allmusic.

The James Hunter Six - Hold On!

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 30:46
Size: 70.5 MB
Styles: R&B
Year: 2016
Art: Front

[2:33] 1. If That Don't Tell You
[4:34] 2. This Is Where We Came In
[2:45] 3. (Baby) Hold On
[3:27] 4. Something's Calling
[2:38] 5. A Truer Heart
[3:05] 6. Free Your Mind
[3:15] 7. Light Of My Life
[2:37] 8. Stranded
[2:31] 9. Satchelfoot
[3:16] 10. In The Dark

Produced by Daptone’s own Bosco Mann (Gabriel Roth) at Penrose Recorders (Daptone West) near his home in Riverside, California, ‘Hold On!’ is a perfect portrait of an artist at the top of his game. James Hunter has been on the scene for enough years to acquire plenty of feathers in his cap. Billboard charts, Grammy nominations, and Van Morrison collaborations aside, he has earned an international reputation as a Rhythm and Blues troubadour for his command of the microphone both on stage and in studio. This album, however, is something far deeper than just another notch in his belt. It is truly an artist’s vision come to fruition.

Though tunes like “(Baby) Hold On,” “If That Don’t Tell You,” and “Stranded” carry the buoyant energy, crackerjack arrangements, and tough soulful pulse for which the band has become renowned, the true treasures of this LP may lie in the deeper grooves. Rumbas, boleros, bossanovas, and easy rockers, each one swinging more than the last: “This Is Where We Came In”, “Something’s Calling”, “A Truer Heart”, “Light of My Life”, “In The Dark” — no clichéd throwback nods to a-time-gone-by here. These are forever songs crafted with immaculate care and ingenuity, sung with an effortless balance of tenderness and grit. Many will be tempted to describe it as “authentic,” but the word really has no place here. Hunter’s words are truly his own and though at moments his voice may “evoke” Ray Charles or Sam Cooke, there lies an inherent naturalness in these songs that bucks any comparison past or present.

The James Hunter Six - Minute By Minute

[3:33] 12. If I Only Knew

With his last two albums, 2006’s Grammy-nominated People Gonna Talk and 2008’s The Hard Way, James Hunter delivered a classic yet perpetually modern brand of rhythm and blues that captivated listeners across generations and earned him two Billboard Blues #1′s, tours with Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, Etta James, and Willie Nelson, performances on Leno, Letterman, and Conan, and critical raves everywhere from the NY Times to USA Today.

Minute By Minute marks a pivotal movement in this unique artist’s career—not only because it arguably contains his best writing, singing, and playing to date, but because it signals James’ return to the studio following the loss of his wife Jacqueline, who died of cancer in October 2011. It’s also the first album credited to The James Hunter Six. James made this change in recognition of the collective talent and unstinting loyalty shown by his longtime cohorts Lee Badau (baritone saxophone), Damian Hand (tenor saxophone), Jonathan Lee (drums), Jason Wilson (double bass), and Kyle Koehler and Andrew Kingslow sharing keyboard/piano duties. The Six have hung together through multiple albums and more than two decades of international touring, from small clubs to the Hollywood Bowl – developing a cohesion and intuitive knack for creating precisely the right arrangement and feel for James’ original songs.
