Albert Loubster, later known as Alfred Frost, played a pivotal role as a guitarist and co-founder of The Fauves Band, now recognized as the Dorp Band from South Africa. In 1995, he decided to depart from the Fauves to join the Blues Broers. Alfred Frost is a seasoned blues singer, rock guitarist, and producer with a long-standing presence on stage. His musical journey started in 1989, at the age of 12, when he began playing the guitar. Alfred Frost marked his solo career with the release of his debut album, "Catfish," in 2002. His talents were further recognized in 2017 when he secured the SAMA (South African Music Awards) award for Best Rock Album with "The Water Up."

Blues music is in our blood because South Africans can resonate with pain in music. We relate to a scratched and dented electric guitar, being played by a man with long hair and on his breath. Artists like Black Cat Bones, Evert Snyman and Albert Frost have paved the way for new blues rockers like Kenny Hughes to take his place in the spotlight – and his new album Born and Raised is a collection of songs written over a seven year period.

The album has an almost pop-blues sound to it, if that even exists. The rock influence is woven into the album smoothly but the main focus is vocals, a guitar twang synonymous with blues rock and a complimentary rhythm section that allows the vocals to do the heavy lifting.

The album opens with “All Over Me” a solid rock track that sets a tone of consistency for the rest of the album. The three-part harmony on “She knows” is unexpected but plays well into the production of the album overall. Later on, the pacing slows down with “Wicked Ways” which is more jazzy than anything else, it breaks up the album nicely into two parts.

The album is produced by industry stalwarts Evert Snyman and Albert Frost. The track “Midnight Man” shows the production excellently, a well-balanced well written blues-rock song that sum’s up Kenny’s song writing and needs to be listened to more than once to be appreciated. While “Blues Truth” is a stand alone track, showing depth, soul and pain that one would expect from an artist of Kenny’s caliber. ~Mike Bower

Robin Morris has surfed for more years than he can remember. He lives in paradise in Jeffreys Bay, awaking every day to gaze down the throat of a magnificent, dancing Super Tubes, renowned as the ultimate right hand reef break and rated as one of the top ten perfect breaking waves in the world. Robin spent several years in the business arena. Initially holding top marketing positions in Robertson’s Spices and Coca-Cola before launching his own Advertising Agency – Dynamics Advertising & Design – that became a landmark blue-chip Ad Agency in Natal. The family relocated to Jeffreys Bay in 1996 to a wonderful house situated on the beach, overlooking Tubes and down the line into Supers. Pro surfers - Kelly Slater, Pat O Connell, Taylor Knox and Shane Dorian stayed at the house with the Morris family for the following consecutive ten years for the annual Billabong WCT event, held in July every year. Five years after moving to J/Bay, Robin started the Quiksilver retail brand in the area, building seven stores from Port Elizabeth to St Francis Bay. He is now retired. Robin is also an avid musician, highly respected for his guitar wizardry. He’s produced several of his own albums to-date that have been distributed worldwide. He takes a keen interest in all the arts and has helped many fledging creative’s and young businessmen to achieve greater heights.

B.B. & The Blues Shacks, the Hildesheim cult formation around the brothers Michael and Andreas Aarlt, are one of the most successful active blues bands in this country with several thousand live gigs and numerous releases on the credit side.

Already in 2015 they released their debut album of the same name as Bonita & The Blues Shacks with Bonita Niessen, a singer from Cape Town. The combination of the experienced blues quintet and the pop and soul singer with many years of TV experience turned out to be a wonderful self-propagator, after Bonita had already enthused on previous recordings and live appearances of the band by guest appearances.

With the brilliance of the great ladies of blues like Ann Peebles, Etta James or Lula Reed her variable and glamorous voice fits perfectly to the BB's, who like to move in the nuances of blues styles up to soul anyway, as well as to the 16 brand new songs on "Sweet Thing", ten well chosen and eloquently interpreted genre classics plus six perfectly fitting original compositions.

And of course BB's singer Michael Arlt is also on the harp and as duet partner on the microphone. Every song sits here and the album is thoroughly gripping, danceable and enormously varied.

Gerald Clark's 'Sweepslag' album takes Afrikaans music to somewhere it has never been before. Delving deep into into both his musical and linguistic roots, Gerald showcases his reworking of ID du Plessis' poem of haunting love, 'Rietfontein se Leidam'. Ever since his debut album, Standing At The Station, followed by his 2004 major label (Blue Note, EMI produced) masterstroke True Blues, Patlansky has immersed himself in the rich and rollicking world of blues-rock music.
Note from DP : The album was called True Blues because at the time I was in to the more traditional blues stuff; I wasn’t really in to the blues rock thing and not really into song writing, per se – it was about playing the guitar over traditional sounding blues tunes. We had a recording budget for True Blues and we had a producer too – a very nice chap – but I have to say I was very disappointed with that album when it came out.
Certainly not disappointed in the way I was with Standing at the Station but I was thinking "well, this is still not representative of what I do" because we had a three piece horn section on a lot of the songs and live we were a power trio – and the album wasn’t like a power trio at all.
Short of sounding like I was really disappointed with everything I recorded for those first couple of albums [laughs] I have to say I was, honestly, a little disappointed with True Blues, but it did help to put me on the map in the South African music scene.
Being on a big label helped too. We got a lot of TV advertising to promote the album, which led to playing outside of my home city of Johannesburg and the surrounding area to getting people out to see us in other South African cities. So overall, it was a good thing.

“Standing at the Station”, an independent album that amazed critics and garnered Dan a reputation as a Blues-phenomenon and his subsequent “Readers Choice” vote as “Best Blues Guitarist in Southern Africa”.
Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Dan Patlansky bought at age 14 his first guitar. Dan Patlansky soon began to play the blues inspired by his father's record collection. B.B. King, Albert Collins, Albert King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan were his idols. Dan Patlansky was 17 when he took to the road with a band called Trigger, a cover rock band with a host of older players. Dan Patlansky left soon after to start a three-piece that became The Mississippi Muthers, comprising Mike Van Tonder (who added bass on three tracks of his major label debut album True Blues) and initially Stephan Lawrence on drums. He has subsequently been replaced by Gordon Legg. With a tight band, an eclectic mix of originals and standards, The Mississippi Mothers grew a fan base and a booking schedule that demanded full-time participation, to which Dan Patlansky happily committed after having spent the latter part of his high school career at The National School of Arts. From Sun City to Julian's and The Blues Room in Johannesburg, each performance made the next even more worthy of the anticipated confirmation. In 2004 at age 22, Dan Patlansky recorded his debut album True Blues.

Wooden Thoughts follows 20 Stones, released to critical acclaim last year, and is rooted in the blues with influences of country, bluegrass, world music and traditional Indian melodies. It’s an album that Patlansky has aspired to do for a long time: “I’ve always wanted to do an acoustic album but finally decided to do it following my successful unplugged tour last year. I realised there was a demand for it. As a musician, it allows you to play something different and it is less flashy. It also lends itself to a wide range of genres that allowed me to stretch myself,” he explains.

On Wooden Thoughts Patlansky sings and plays acoustic guitar, slide guitar, Dobro and the mandolin. He is joined by Clint Falconer on bass and Andy Maritz on Cajon. Wendy Oldfield does backing vocals on the track Miss Oowee as well as on The Weight. Patlansky, who produced the album himself, is delighted that it was recorded in the Knysna forest by Howard Butcher – a specialist recorder who has produced among others Guy Buttery, Steve Newman and Nibs van der Spuy.

Frost is a familiar and respected feature of the South African blues rock music scene. For the past 20 years, the energetic performances of this accomplished guitarist have dazzled audiences as he deftly alternates between rhythm and lead, while showcasing acoustic and electric guitars. Dan Patlansky - 2 albums: Introvertigo / Dear Silence Thieves

Never far from likeminded genius, guitarist, singer/songwriter and globally respected purveyor of the blues, Dan Patlansky sidles into his second successive decade as one of the world’s finest blues-based storytellers of his generation. Ever since his debut album, Standing At The Station, followed by his 2004 major label (Blue Note, EMI produced) masterstroke True Blues, Dan Patlansky has been immersing himself in the rich and rollicking world of blues rock music. In February 2005, and again in July 2006, Selwyn Miller, the New Orleans based manager of David Gates, Bread, Randy Crawford and Petula Clark (amongst others), took Patlansky to New Orleans to showcase his outstanding talent.

In 2006 Fender acknowledged his talent with a guitar and amp endorsement, making him only one of six on the continent to enjoy such a privilege.

As Dan settled into his groove, what followed was a barrage of brilliantly executed eclectic and acoustic blues albums. 2006 brought with Real, Move My Soul in 2009, 20 Stones in 2012, and the unplugged wonder of 2013’s acoustically anchored Wooden Thoughts release. With each new release, Patlansky’s albums brought with him a tighter and more engaging lyrical twist and even more interesting turns, all of which led beautifully to his much anticipated 2014 full- electric album released in May. A blank canvas. An empty page. Total musical expression. This is the blues blueprint which forms the creed of the Violent Free Peace, a loose collective of similarly-minded musicians who back the veteran South African guitarist Basson Laubscher.

Laubscher hails from Stellenbosch, continuing the rich musical legacy of the town that has spawned some of the country’s most beloved and critically acclaimed musicians, many of whom have shared a stage, a tent, a kombi and festival stage with Laubscher.

His professional musical career started when he jammed with Bertie Coetzee at school in the first incarnation of what would become Zinkplaat, a road-tested Afrikaans rock band who played hundreds of gigs from the West Coast to London during a decade-long career.

Laubscher has performed alongside countless top names at countless festivals.He has also done session work on numerous albums including for Valiant Swart, Ann Jangle and Ryno Velvet. He continues to play with Swart, both in the full band setup and two-man acoustic performances.

His debut full-length album, Testify, is set to stun audiences with it’s one of a kind sound fusions.

Taking the best from blues, rock, and country and adding his staple voodoo swamp sounds, Laubscher has created a long-awaited masterpiece that is ready to set stages alight!

Ever taken a Bunch of Metalheads, thrown a bunch of southern instruments in their hands, got them liquored up and put them on a stage? well thats what happened with CHB. Utilizing mad banjo skills, slide, guitar & harmonica tearing on top of a groovin' Rhythm n bass section that will take you from 50's swing, balls out Rock, sweet subtle blues to hillbilly hoedowns that will put any audience into a hick frenzy. Be prepared for Guttural vocals that sore from sweet subtle tenderness to gut wrenching howls that will take you all the way to the delta, Okavango delta that is. This band will entertain any crowd through an all night binge.

The Founding members were Arno Van Zyl and Redeye Riaan. At its peak the band comprised of 6 members, currently they operate as a 4 piece with Christoph de Chavonnes Vrugt on Drums, Jacques Van Rensburg on Bass, Redeye Riaan on vocal & Guitar and Arno Van Zyl on Banjo & Lead guitar, the band is moving from strength to strength.

The Crimson House Blues band started in Namibia and moved the project to Cape Town in early 2011 where the grass is presumed greener (they like to water their grass, therefor returning home when their SA gig schedule's aren't fully booked) Since their inception into the Cape Town scene they have played every dive they could find and still continue to do so.

Already having a number of festivals under their belt (Synergy, Big blues festival ect.) Organizers and public alike are always happy with their decision to have them share the bill "We don't play for the money, but it does help us continue doing what we do" says Redeye Riaan who Manages the outfit "we charge for setting up, the music is free".

The Other 2 members Stefan Steyn (guitar) and Dust Devil Reissner returned to Namibia to pursue their various musical projects and career paths. But there are no hard feelings, any time they're in the same place, be sure to catch a reunion show of epic proportions.

Emerging themselves in the Blues, their music takes on various shades of blue, from hillbilly hoedowns, Bluegrass madness, ground shakers to heart-breakers, this Nam-style blues outfit will sweep your soul from under your feet. Wherever you see the mark of the Crimson House, you know you’re in for a good time.

Each member stems from Dark and heavy past projects such as The broken result, Azrail, Submission, Nove, Multisonus, Small town Tramp and still continue they're pursuit of Metal and muggshots on the side.

Crimson House Blues is not restricted to any specific genre just as the blues. Most of their songs are written live in-front an audience, and only the best vibes and ideas are kept to be crafted into the songs their fans know and love.

Gerald Clark is an accomplished South African musician recognised for his extraordinary ability to tell a story with his music. He is one of SA’s top musicians – a singer and songwriter famous for his voice that can get down to the soul and honesty that consists within the blues.

Ahead of the release of his new album “Afroboer & the Golden Goose” he got some of the country’s top blues artists including Dan Patlansky and Albert Frost to give you their take on this talented young musician.

Gerald Clark has released three successful albums of which one, Sweepslag, was nominated for a South African Music Award (SAMA). The SAMAs is a prestigious event and his solo album was up against two very popular local musos, Lianie May and Emo Adams. Clark’s second album, Black Water, gave him international success. The title track’s music video, Black Water, was nominated for an MTV Europe Animation Award.

One of the original compositions from this album was featured as the theme song for SuperSport’s Jo’burg to Sea Mountain Bike Race on DSTV SuperSport, giving him exposure to a primetime television audience – yet another victory for his second album. Clark’s third album, Follow the River, was well received by fans and the media. Five songs from this album made it to the airwaves and were played on high-rotation on Smile FM and RSG, amongst others.

Guitar virtuoso Jonathan Peyper has released his power-trio debut album. Undoubtedly one of the greatest up-and-coming musicians and guitarists in the South African Rock and Blues community. Peyper has produced a groundbreaking album that educes a swarm of emotions.

The album was written and recorded in April of 2014 at Wolmer Records, Pretoria. It was recorded live, without a click-track, which showcases the energetic and flawless performances from all three artists. Backing vocals were performed by Tamryn Jones a.k.a. Tammy Wilson from Southern Gypsey Queen.

The Blues Broers pride themselves on producing an exceptionally fine, versatile and diverse live show. Known in the 90s as South Africa's hardest working blues band, the Blues Broers played hundreds of gigs at festivals, in bars and in nightclubs.
However, the death of drummer Frank Frost in 1999 was a blow from which the band struggled to recover and in 2003 they put on a farewell gig in Stellenbosch.

Now, snappily attired in their trademark black suits and dark glasses, the Blues Broers are back in circulation with performances at old haunts and new, as well as being a welcome feature of the festival circuit again too.

The impeccable Albert Frost performs on a classic selection of electric and acoustic guitars. In a corner of the stage, keyboard player Simon Orange hammers a boogie-woogie for the crowd. Rob Nagel (fondly known as Big Bob or Harpdog Bob) deftly juggles bass, harmonica and tea chest, whilst new drummer Tim Rankin brings his considerable experience to the rhythm section

Their seventh album "Into the Red" features 14 brand new songs, written and produced by the band. Sporting a wide variety of song styles, the Broers continue their tradition of pushing the bounds of the blues to new extremes.

The new album is called ‘Red Shack Rock’ and it keeps up the fine tradition of putting out some seriously whiskey-soaked blues. Riaan Smit’s voice is bone dry (think Tom Waits) as he belts out the opening number. Arno Van Zyl on lead guitar assists by laying down a killer backing track. At one point the blues goes down so low it hits a subterranean groove that has the room jiving along. Midway through the set, a pale stranger toting a sax joins them onstage and jazzes up the set just a little. Tombstone Pete and Ann Jangle both also put in a supporting performance. Between the banjo, harmonica and a catchy, good old fashioned hoedown the set closes on a high. But it’s two more encores before the crowd is ready to call it a night.
