It may have been relatively late in Jimmy Rushing's career when he recorded two albums for ABC/BluesWay (Every Day I Have The Blues & Livin' The Blues, both of which are reissued in full on this single CD), but he was still in prime singing voice. Joined by such friends as trombonist Dickie Wells, trumpeter Clark Terry, and tenor saxophonist Buddy Tate, Rushing shows that he was still relevant on such blues-based songs as "Berkeley Campus Blues," "Blues in the Dark," "I Left My Baby," "Sent for You Yesterday," and "We Remember Prez." Even with Oliver Nelson's arrangements on the first half and an electric rhythm section on the second, both Rushing and the musicians play off each other well, resulting in a swinging set. /Scott Yanow, AllMusic

4. Sent For You Yesterday (3:37)
5. How Long (4:51)

7. How You Want Your Lovin Done (4:19)

James Rushing, one of the greatest of the Kansas City blues shouters. Conceived as musical autobiographies, these great albums remake many of the songs he made jazz standards with Count Basie. Will Friedwald Mr. Five By Five is accompanied here by a fine little band including among others Emmett Berry on trumpet, Lawrence Brown and Vic Dickenson on trombone, Buddy Tate on tenor sax, Sammy Price or Pete Johnson on piano, and two legendary members of the original Basie rhythm section in the old years: Walter Page and Jo Jones. In John Hammonds words, these recordings by Jimmy Rushing are, I believe, among the best he ever made.

He was known as "Mister Five-By-Five" -- an affectionate reference to his height and girth -- a blues shouter who defined and then transcended the form. The owner of a booming voice that radiated sheer joy in whatever material he sang, Jimmy Rushing could swing with anyone and dominate even the loudest of big bands. Rushing achieved his greatest fame in front of the Count Basie band from 1935 to 1950, yet unlike many band singers closely associated with one organization, he was able to carry on afterwards with a series of solo recordings that further enhanced his reputation as a first-class jazz singer.

Raised in a musical family, learning violin, piano and music theory in his youth, Rushing began performing in nightspots after a move to California in the mid-'20s. He joined Walter Page's Blue Devils in 1927, then toured with Bennie Moten from 1929 until the leader's death in 1935, going over to Basie when the latter picked up the pieces of the Moten band. The unquenchably swinging Basie rhythm section was a perfect match for Rushing, making their earliest showing together on a 1936 recording of "Boogie Woogie" that stamped not only Rushing's presence onto the national scene but also that of Lester Young. Rushing's recordings with Basie are scattered liberally throughout several reissues on Decca, Columbia and RCA. While with Basie, he also appeared in several film shorts and features.

After the Basie ensemble broke up in 1950, a victim of hard times for big bands, Rushing briefly retired, then formed his own septet. He started a series of solo albums for Vanguard in the mid-'50s, then turned in several distinguished recordings for Columbia in league with such luminaries as Dave Brubeck, Coleman Hawkins and Benny Goodman, the latter of whom he appeared with at the Brussels World's Fair in 1958 as immortalized in "Brussels Blues." He also recorded with Basie alumni such as Buck Clayton and Jo Jones, as well as with the Duke Ellington band on Jazz Party. He appeared on TV in The Sound of Jazz in 1957, was featured in Jon Hendricks' The Evolution of the Blues, and also had a singing and acting role in the 1969 film The Learning Tree. ~Richard S. Although Jimmy Rushing parted company with Count Basie in 1950, Basie's influence stayed with him right up until his death in 1972. Similarly, Basie didn't forget about Rushing either; the fact that Joe Williams, Basie's male vocalist from 1954-1961, was greatly influenced by Rushing certainly wasn't lost on the Count. Basie's influence is impossible to miss on Oh Love, a superb CD focusing on Rushing's John Hammond-produced work for Vanguard in the 1950s. Spanning 1955-1958, this collection of Kansas City swing, jump blues, and jazz/blues draws on three of the singer's old Vanguard LPs (Listen to the Blues, If This Ain't the Blues, and Goin' to Chicago), and finds him joined by such hard-swinging improvisers as tenor saxman Buddy Tate, trombonist Lawrence Brown, pianist Pete Johnson, and drummer Jo Jones (not to be confused with Philly Joe Jones). Rushing revisits many classics from his Basie years, including "Going to Chicago Blues," "Pennies From Heaven," "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You," and "Dinah," and he sings them with as much conviction as ever. These are essential recordings that have withstood the test of time quite nicely. ~Alex Henderson

Various - The Last Shout! Twilight Of The Blues Shouters 1954-1962 (3-CD Set)

The forgotten superheroes of 20th-century black music, the leather-lunged blues shouters, dominated the US nightclub stages and R&B charts for half-a-dozen years or so following World War II, before being side-lined by the bourgeoning rock n roll storm in the early 1950s. Still considered a force with which to be reckoned in the US music industry of the mid-fifties, and still at the height of their vocal prowess, many of the biggest stars were granted one or two final shots to save their flagging recording careers during rock n roll s heyday - their Last Shout.

Compiled and annotated by R&B authority Dave Penny, this 3CD set from Fantastic Voyage endeavours to document the twilight of that proud musical genre and resurrect the ultimate releases from some of the great voices of R&B. The international blues boom of the 1960s - informed by the white Europeans predilection for more unsophisticated rural country blues and urban down-home blues, coupled with black America s progressive, wholesale acceptance of gospel-steeped soul and funk - served to entomb the art of the jump blues shouter further and to remove the memory of an exciting musical form from general consciousness, until it began to be exhumed decades later. Featuring singers famous and obscure, The Last Shout! serves the best of the final commercial recordings issued for the African-American R&B market by the likes of Big Joe Turner, Wynonie Harris, Jimmy Witherspoon and Eddie Cleanhead Vinson. When they no longer sold to their market, some, like Turner and Witherspoon, were able to make a comfortable living on the jazz circuit, others pursued alternative careers in comedy, preaching, composing or acting, yet others remained tragically determined; trying to maintain an ever-dwindling touring schedule on the chittlin circuit and drinking themselves into an early grave.

97 tracks and a 20pp illustrated booklet offer a snapshot of time in the history of black music, when the undiminished power of the classic blues shouters was married to the urgent rhythms of the rock n roll era, resulting in some very special music indeed!
