“Wisdom & Decay” is an evolution in the artistry of Eccentric American Blues artists, Jeff Jensen. Showcasing 7 original songs and 3 interpretations, this album features Jensen’s best writing and producing to date. Lyrically significant, emotionally vulnerable, and super creative; these songs are steeped in rootsy blues and poetic soul.

This album kicks off with Little Milton’s “I’m Living Off The Love You Give”, a fiery soulful performance paying tribute to the band’s hometown of Memphis, TN. Then on to originals, “2000 Days” is a haunting story of overcoming serious struggle, anyone that is or has ever struggled with addiction will feel this one. “Pretend Forevers” is a super charged emotional story about the inevitable outcome of long term relationships, this song will hit anyone that has ever lost someone; be it a parent, a spouse or simply a failed long term significant relationship, this track will hit home. “Pretend Forevers” features a beautiful string quartet recorded at Sam Phillips Studio in Memphis, TN, it brings back the old Chess Records style of producing blues that you find in the great Etta James classics.

Another album highlight is “Luck is Gonna Change”, an old gospel style original about doing everything the wrong way and hoping for a better outcome, lyrically deep and intentional, this song is filled with witty lyrics and a sound message. “What We Used To Be” is a dark comedy about the American perspective today, not a political message but representative of the constant noice we hear daily. “Something in the Water” and “Water Jam” is one for the guitar fans out there, these tracks feature the energy and creativity Jeff Jensen and his tour band, Bill Ruffino and David Green, bring to the stage night after night.

As Jeff’s career as a frontman/entertainer progresses so does his resume as a producer, this album features Jensen’s development in both fields. Intentional, articulate, beautifully arranged and wonderful recording quality. “Wisdom & Decay” was created using all real musicians, all real instruments on all analog equipment.

The growth in Jensen on this album is felt from the first note to the last, his voice is strong, soulful, and more passionate than ever, his guitar is even more creative and recognizable. And the band is simply on fire. “Wisdom & Decay” is possibly their best work to date.

I’ve always enjoyed albums in which one artist explores music with several other artists in order to see what direction that collaboration takes. In my collection are albums of duets featuring Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennet, among others, and now I’m delighted to add the latest from Mick Kolassa who has teamed up with different friends on a new album of duets, Double Standards.

You might remember that on Kolassa’s previous album, You Can’t Do That, featured a team up with Mark Telesca, turning Beatles classics into acoustic blues numbers. He’s shown that he has no problem taking chances with his music and he’s gathered some very talented musicians and singers to make this a very enjoyable album.

Double Standards is produced by longtime collaborator and all-around guitar wizard Jeff Jensen, who also plays guitar and even adds vocals to one song. Vocalists include Sugaray Rayford, Heather Crosse, Victor Wainwright, Annika Chambers, Tas Cru, Tullie Brae, Eric Hughes, Erica Brown, Patti Parks, David Dunavent, and Gracie Curran.

Aside from Kolassa and Jensen on guitar, musicians include Bill Ruffino on bass; James Cunningham on drums; Chris Stephenson on organ; Eric Hughes adds his harmonica to three songs; Jeremy Powell plays piano on two tracks, Alice Hasan on violin; and Colin John and David Dunavent play guitar on one track each.

The album starts off with a fun Willie Dixon number, 600 Pounds Of Heavenly Joy, which features Sugaray Rayford with Kolassa. The two have great gruff voices and this is a lot of fun to listen to and a great invitation to what must surely be an interesting journey. Jensen’s guitar adds a sweet element to the song.

A second Willie Dixon classic, I Just Want To Make Love To You gives Kolassa a chance to team up with Heather Crosse. Crosse is a strong vocalist, and the way her voice has an edgy low growl makes this song one that catches you right away and won’t let go. Definitely going to be receiving airplay on Time For The Blues, and I suspect many other shows! I don’t have any of Crosse’s other recordings, but you better believe I’m ordering the others right now. Meow…

Victor Wainwright joins Kolassa for a great version of It’s Tight Like That. Originally written and performed by Hudson Whittaker, better known as Tampa Red, this is one of those great songs that features Red’s fun wordplay. This is a great example of Hokum Blues, and I, for one, hope that we will hear more of this style. Wainwright, who has just announced he’s joining the Ruf Records family, is one of the best keyboardists alive, and his vocals rock. Eric Hughes blows a great harp on the number.

One of the most alluring and sensual songs ever recorded, Fever, showcases Annika Chambers’ great voice. This jazzy number is deeply rooted in the blues, and Stephenson’s organ adds a deeper dimension to the song. This is a great late night song to unwind to after a long day, or to hold that certain someone a little closer for an even longer night…

Tas Cru steps up to the microphone for the next song, the powerful Nobody Knows You When You’re Down And Out. Hasan’s violin gives the song a sweet melancholy introduction before Kolassa’s vocals come in. This version of the song pulls out all the stops and Kolassa and Cru wring every drop of emotion out of the lyrics.

BB King’s Rock Me Baby features a great collaboration between Kolassa and Tullie Brae. Stephenson’s keyboards set up the song and while Kolassa’s vocals are good, Brae takes things higher. This is another song that will be appearing on a number of shows. It’s just plain fun and while it doesn’t try to capture King’s signature guitar sound, it takes on its own soul and remains very true to the spirit of the original.

The iconic Key To The Highway has been covered by just about every blues artist over the years. Now we can add Kolassa and Eric Hughes to that list. Hughes has already added his sweet harp to a couple of previous numbers, and here he brings both his harp and vocals to the song. It’s a good interpretation of a classic tune.

One more Willie Dixon number, Spoonful, features Kolassa and Erica Brown. They turn the song jazzy with Stephenson’s keys taking the lead. Kolassa has chosen his songs wisely, mixing some of the better known works by Dixon and Tampa Red with others that are great, but perhaps not as well known. Listen for Jensen’s guitar break and they way he trades off with Stephenson. Very nice interpretation.

Patti Parks joins Kolassa on a great cover of Hudson Whittaker’s It Hurts Me Too. This is one of Tampa Red’s most covered songs and one that resonates deeply with most audiences. It’s one of those songs where the singer just bares his or her heart and pours out the emotion. A truly wonderful gem of a song, and a great interpretation.

Early In The Morning features David Dunavent on guitar and vocals. This is a rocking blues number that will be showing up on my show, and I suspect many others as well. For those who like their blues with a bit of an edge, this is the one for you!

Another number from Hudson Whittaker, aka Tampa Red, Don’t You Lie To Me (Evil), brings Gracie Curran and Kolassa together. More great keys work from Stephenson overlaid with some funky guitar and Curran’s vocals are sweet and soulful at the same time.

Jensen teams up with his old friend on their version of Outside Woman Blues. Whenever they team up there are bound to be a few surprises, in this case a more rocking number than most of the previous tracks. Jensen is one of those guitar slingers who always turns in a great performance, and once you hear him, you’re always looking for his next release.

All of the previous vocalists join Kolassa on a fun, seven-minute version of Ain’t Nobody’s Business to close out the album. Everyone seems to be having a great time and it sounds like the recording of the album was a great party and a wonderful excuse for friends to get together. Wish I could have been a fly on the wall for this one!

Mick Kolassa may not be a household name, but within the blues world he is a well respected musician. He keeps that old school sound alive and isn’t shy about sharing the spotlight with his friends and colleagues. Since discovering his talents a few albums back, I have become a big fan of his work, and Double Standards will have a welcome place in my collection. ~Professor John

Like my previous blues albums, Jeff Jensen produced Taylor Made Blues and sweat blood while coordinating the work. Also like my previous work, all the proceeds for the sales of this record will go to the Blues Foundation. This new record has even more variety than the previous ones. I called it Taylor Made Blues because living in Taylor Mississippi has allowed me to be more in touch with myself – to get a better handle on what’s important, and I wanted to share some of that with you. I have brought in some old friends to help out, especially Jeff Jensen and Bill Ruffino – who continue to be the musical backbone of my work, along with trusted allies James Cunningham, Chris Stephenson, Eric Hughes, Victor Wainwright, and Reba Russell, who have once again brought their special magic to my musical ideas.

I’m also joined by some other special friends on this album: “Long Tall” Deb Landolt and Colin John came to Memphis to spend a few days adding their immense talent to the mix; my “nephew” the Mississippi Blues Child Castro (Mr. Sipp) Coleman joined in to add some special guitar playing on a tune; and the amazing Tullie Brae stopped on her way through town to add some vocal help. That’s money no matter how you look at it, and I’m richer because of these great and talented friends.

Sometimes all it takes is a tiny spark to ignite a raging inferno. For Jeff Jensen, the spark occurred in 2011. Feeling the need for a fresh start, he loaded up his car to head back to his boyhood home in California. Just as that journey was to begin, a deep and unexpected calling starting boiling inside, Jensen changed directions and headed to Memphis. There was no job waiting for him; no plan, no family, no band, just a lone friend with a temporary place for him to stay. But our intrepid guitar player felt it was the right move, the only move. In less than thirty hours after arriving, he met Brandon Santini and was offered the opportunity to be his guitarist. Soon after, Jeff became music director for the Brandon Santini Band.

The inferno has been building ever since. After two years, almost 500 shows and three recordings with Santini, Jensen re-formed his band with long-time friend and musical collaborator Bill Ruffino (bass). Then they recruited Memphis native Robinson Bridgeforth as drummer. They hit the road and never looked back.

Most people are in for a shock the first time they experience a Jeff Jensen Band performance. It starts with the trio mixing an eccentric blend of soul, rock, and American roots music with a deep blues influence. Suddenly Jensen feels the spirit, transforming into a whirling dervish of sight & sound as he bounds across the stage, barely able to contain himself as he wrenches stark, biting six-string explosions from his guitar. His passion is there for all to see, a rare occurrence in these times of buttoned-down music-making. At first, the sheer emotional force he creates can be a bit overwhelming. Then you realize that all art is an expression of the soul, of the power of the life-giving force that created the universe. And Jeff feels it is his responsibility to make the effort to communicate his passion with each member of the audience every night. After all, music is art, and art is the physical form of emotion.

In 2015, Jensen released the vibrant Morose Elephant album that captures the flavor of the band’s creative force. Combining seven originals with covers of songs from Memphis Minnie and Amos Milburn plus a traditional gospel hymn, Jensen articulates the depth of his musical vision with help from a number of friends including Victor Wainwright, Reba Russell, and Annie Harris. The disc received even more critical acclaim as the band’s previous release, Road Worn and Ragged (2013), both produced by Jensen. This led to two consecutive Blues Blast Music Award nominations in the Sean Costello Rising Star category (2014/2015).

The band continues to tour the US, Canada and many European countries relentlessly, as the inferno shows no signs of burning out. Whenever there is a break in the schedule, Jensen switches roles, acting as the producer with other artists including Mick Kolassa, John Parker and co-producing Santini’s This Time Another Year, nominated for a Blues Music Award in the Contemporary Blues Album category (2014). ~by Mark Thompson

"Jeff Jensen" has been a musical work in progress for over a decade, blending blues, soul, west coast swing and Americana into a mature sound that now defines his latest highly-anticipated release, "Road Worn and Ragged".

Having moved to Memphis, TN from Portland, Oregon just two years ago, Jeff immediately began touring with Beale Street staple, Brandon Santini and recently co-produced and co-wrote on Santini's acclaimed album "This Time Another Year." Recording almost entirely live at Ardent Studios in Memphis, Jeff subtly emphasizes substance over hype, all the while never shying away from the extreme energy and honest emotion that he is well known for.

With an exciting mission to assemble the finest group of musicians, Jeff finds a powerhouse group of friends that share his passion for musical exploration. Complete with brand new fiery tracks like "Brunette Woman" and "Crosseyed Cat" to the risky emotional honesty of "River Runs Dry", this album shows the progressive maturity of a consistently growing artist. "Road Worn and Ragged" features bassist Bill Ruffino, James Cunningham on drums, Chris Stephenson on organ and Wurlitzer, Brandon Santini on harmonica and 2013 BMA Winner Victor Wainwright on piano. Wainwright also co-wrote the swinging "Raggedy Ann" and produced four of Jeff's vocal tracks. The one and only Reverend Billy C. Wirtz even chipped in by co-writing the easy shuffle with stinging honesty, "Good Bye Portland."

"Jeff don't chase any ghosts of Robert Johnson, or fall into the pitfalls of coming off gimmicky! He brings the goods with this no-nonsense production and I can't help but conclude that his songs were constructed for the express purpose of taking on and winning over an audience! something I greatly admire and something he and his band have the extreme talent to do!" - Victor Wainwright (2013 BMA winner).

Jeff Jensen - Vocals, Guitar; Bill Ruffino - Bass; James Cunningham - Drums; Chris Stephenson - Organ. Special Guests--Victor Wainwright - Piano; Brandon Santini - Harmonica.
