Although they have played together since 2004 and known each other since the 1970s, Eminent Domain is the first full-length cd by The Moxie Band of Cincinnati Ohio. The group’s sound is bluesy and jazzy, sometimes funky, always tasty. Original songs are written by Ed Cunningham of the Comet Bluegrass Allstars, with one track co-written by Cincinnati’s Queen of Bluegrass, Katie Laur. Other songs were written or originally recorded by Rufus, Michelle Shocked, Lowell Fulson, Debbie Davis, Deborah Coleman, and The Nighthawks.
The album title is referring to the mandatory sale and demolition of a two-family building that guitarist Jim Lawson bought in the 1970s. The house no longer stands, but decades of memories remain in the hearts of friends and family who lived or spent time there until 2011 when it was torn down. One of many former tenants, the late Britt Krebs was the main photographer for this project. All photos were taken at the property, then, and now.
Combined, the group has about 200 years playing experience. Mike Barrett, bass; Larry Bloomfield, harmonica; Donna Moxness, vocals; Jim Lawson, guitar and keyboards; Gus Thierry, drums. Special guest appearances by Jimmy Nolan on trombone, Britt Krebs on guitar, and Steve Hayes on chimes. WNKU’s Mr. Rhythm Man says, “Bluesy, Jazzy, and Rock-Solid!”
