They didn’t call it rock & roll back then, but they do now. ~Steve Leggett

Boogie piano master Amos Milburn was born in Houston, and he died there a short 52 years later. In between, he pounded out some of the most hellacious boogies of the postwar era, usually recording in Los Angeles for Aladdin Records and specializing in good-natured upbeat romps about booze and its effects (both positive and negative) that proved massive hits during the immediate pre-rock era.

The self-taught 88s ace made a name for himself as "the He-Man Martha Raye" around Houston before joining the Navy and seeing overseas battle action in World War II. When he came out of the service, Milburn played in various Lone Star niteries before meeting the woman whose efforts would catapult him to stardom.

Persistent manager Lola Anne Cullum reportedly barged into Aladdin boss Eddie Mesner's hospital room, toting a portable disc machine with Milburn's demo all cued up. The gambit worked -- Milburn signed with Aladdin in 1946. His first date included a thundering "Down the Road Apiece" that presaged the imminent rise of rock & roll. But Milburn was capable of subtler charms too, crooning mellow blues ballads in a Charles Brown-influenced style (the two would later become close friends, playing together frequently).

The first of Milburn's 19 Top Ten R&B smashes came in 1948 with his party classic "Chicken Shack Boogie," which paced the charts and anointed his band with a worthy name (the Aladdin Chickenshackers, natch). A velvet-smooth "Bewildered" displayed the cool after-hours side of Milburn's persona as it streaked up the charts later that year, but it was rollicking horn-driven material such as "Roomin' House Boogie" and "Sax Shack Boogie" that Milburn was renowned for. Milburn's rumbling 88s influenced a variety of famous artists, notably Fats Domino.

With the ascent of "Bad, Bad Whiskey" to the peak of the charts in 1950, Milburn embarked on a string of similarly boozy smashes: "Thinking and Drinking," "Let Me Go Home Whiskey," "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer" (an inebriating round John Lee Hooker apparently enjoyed!), and "Good Good Whiskey" (his last hit in 1954). Alcoholism later brought the pianist down hard, giving these numbers a grimly ironic twist in retrospect. Milburn's national profile rated a series of appearances on the Willie Bryant-hosted mid-'50s TV program Showtime at the Apollo (where he gave out with a blistering "Down the Road Apiece").

Aladdin stuck with Milburn long after the hits ceased, dispatching him to New Orleans in 1956 to record with the vaunted studio crew at Cosimo's. There he recut "Chicken Shack Boogie" in a manner so torrid that it's impossible to believe it didn't hit (tenor saxist Lee Allen and drummer Charles "Hungry" Williams blast with atomic power as Milburn happily grunts along with his pounding boogie piano solo). In 1957, he left Aladdin for good.

Milburn contributed a fine offering to the R&B Yuletide canon in 1960 with his swinging "Christmas (Comes but Once a Year)" for King. Berry Gordy gave him a comeback forum in 1962, issuing an album on Motown predominated by remakes of his old hits that doesn't deserve its extreme rarity today (even Little Stevie Wonder pitched in on harp for the sessions).

Nothing could jump start the pianist's fading career by then, though. His health deteriorated to the point where a string of strokes limited his mobility and his left leg was eventually amputated. Not too long after, one of the greatest pioneers in the history of R&B was dead. ~Bill Dahl

He was a huge draw, and these were the top recordings in Aladdin's catalog. Jukeboxes throughout the South, Chicago, New York, and even L.A. were featuring recordings by Milburn. This set include the original recorded versions of classics such as "Jitterbug Fashion Parade" and "In the Middle of the Night," which were among his most successful records from 1948, while 1949 saw "Roomin' House Boogie," "Let's Make Christmas Merry, Baby," "Bow-Wow!," "Drifting Blues," and "Real Pretty Mama." As is standard on the Classics label, the sound is exceptional and the presentation and liner notes are comprehensive. ~Thom Jurek

Amos Milburn was born in Houston, TX, on April 1, 1927. After serving in the Navy during the Second World War, the young pianist began performing publicly in a style derived directly from his heroes Albert Ammons and Pete Johnson. While leading a small band at San Antonio's Keyhole Club, Milburn was discovered by Lola Anne Cullum, a talent scout working for the Los Angeles-based Aladdin record label. Soon after hiring Milburn, Cullum would also sign and record a pair of fine bluesmen from Houston, Wilson "Thunder" Smith and Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins. Milburn was only 19 years old when he made his first records. This compilation documents everything he recorded between September 1946 and October 1947. As the musicians in his regular working band were considered too green to appear on records, Milburn was provided with a small backing ensemble composed of players whose names have since been forgotten, although tenor saxophonist Maxwell Davis was in charge of the group and is believed to have performed on the sides cut in 1947. The slow, soulful, and bluesy instrumental "Real Gone" is the greatest artistic achievement of the entire album. All of this action predates Milburn's big hit of 1948, "Chicken Shack Boogie," and serves as a fascinating prelude to this pianist's later work and all of the hot music he went on to inspire others to create. ~arwulf arwulf

From the beginning, Motown was almost exclusively devoted to soul. But they did have a few blues-oriented artists on their roster, especially in the early 1960s. Truthfully, though, this 20-track compilation isn't exactly a blues anthology. It's more like a collection of soul cuts with a bluesy feeling, by performers who had substantial or deep roots in pure blues. Mable John (Little Willie's sister) and Sammy Ward, for instance, sing R&B/soul with some bluesy shadings; jump blues veteran Amos Milburn sings modified earthy R&B, married to Motown's embryonic production machine; Earl King has a slight New Orleans flavor to his previously unreleased performances. The unknown Arthur Adams sings blues/soul crossover; Luther Allison comes by far the closest to real blues, and is the only one of the artists whose selections date from the 1970s. You can quibble about the accuracy of the compilation's theme, but it's not a bad excuse to get some interesting Motown performances out of the vaults and onto CD, though it's not truly top-drawer blues or soul. Only one of these was even a modest hit (Sammy Ward's 1960 single "Who's the Fool"), and seven tracks were previously unreleased (King and Adams never even got to officially release anything on Motown), so even seasoned Motown collectors will find much of interest here. ~Richie Unterberger

A crucial figure in the transformation of swing and jump blues into R&B and rock & roll, the legendary pianist and singer Amos Milburn pounded out some of the most hellacious boogies of the postwar era. He specialized in good-natured upbeat romps about booze and its effects (both positive and negative) that proved massive hits during the immediate pre-rock era. Such great artists as Fats Domino, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Dr. John have all cited Amos as a seminal influence on their work. This essential release compiles 29 of the finest songs Amos Milburn issued for different labels like Aladdin, Ace, and King, between 1946 and 1961. Highlights include joyous R&B, soulful blues, and seminal rock & roll tunes, such as Chicken Shack Boogie, Lets Have a Party, Bad, Bad Whiskey, Rocky Mountain, and One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer, among many others. Also featured here are lesser-known rockin numbers that are just as enjoyable as the classics. Among the material included in this edition are the 12 tracks that constituted Milburns complete 1957 LP Lets Have a Party (originally released on Score, a subsidiary of Aladdin). A celebrated album among R&B and blues aficionados of that era, it contained a magnificent selection of Amos previous recordings for the label.

King, Amos Milburn, Charles Brown, Jimmy Witherspoon, Lowell Fulton, Roy Milton. The Drifters, Joe Turner and Chuck Berry sing their Christmas favourites. Being the blues of course many of the songs emphasise how lonely Christmas can be without the one you love whilst others celebrate the holiday season with joyful songs and new versions of standards like, "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer" and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town". Many of these records constantly reappeared on the R&B sales charts every year. Some like Charles Brown's original million-selling "Merry Christmas Baby" were still selling well into the soul era. Depending on your mood you can preselect these titles, pour a large Brandy and wallow in the depressive elements of a lonely Christmas or roll back the carpet put another nickel in the jukebox and have a Rockin' Christmas celebration. Either way works.

Amos Milburn - The Best Of The Aladdin Years 1946-57

Amos Milburn was one of the pioneers of piano-based R&B to emerge from Texas in the post-war years to become one of the artists who helped frame the template for rock 'n' roll, along the way enjoying a run of memorable hits from 1947 through into the mid-'50s. He developed from his beginnings as a boogie-woogie pianist to become a jump blues bandleader, scoring his first hit with "Chicken Shack Boogie", and after that helped the Los Angeles-based Aladdin label to become a major force, with his run of hits including his specialist strand of rocking booze-related hits like "Bad Bad Whiskey", "Thinking And Drinking", "Let Me Go Home Whiskey", "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer" and "Good Good Whiskey".

This great-value 52-track 2-CD set comprises nearly half of the 106 A & B sides he released on Aladdin, and naturally includes all of his 19 Billboard R&B chart hits, the majority of his A sides and selected B sides. It provides a hugely entertaining showcase for his talents as a vocalist, pianist, songwriter and bandleader, with boogie-woogie and blues, hot R&B, and proto rock 'n' roll during the '50s as he competed with the wave of new artists who overtook those who had laid the groundwork. /Amazon

The rock revolution was not televised. Elvis Presley, who launched rockabilly in 1954, did not invent rock ‘n’ roll.
This album rehabilitates the history-making, foundational records which came out of the seminal rock trend; they were present on the black circuit as early as 1949, yet banned on radio stations due to racial segregation.
These splendid—and little-known—recordings testify to the authentic sound, subversiveness and stylistic variation which characterized the birth of rock.

Born in Houston, one of thirteen children, by the age of five years Milburn was playing tunes by piano. He enlisted in the United States Navy when he was fifteen and earned thirteen battle stars in the Philippines, before returning to Houston and organizing a sixteen-piece band playing in Houston clubs and was Managed by William & Geneva Church. Milburn participated with the Houston jazz and blues musicians. He was a polished pianist and performer and during 1946 attracted the attention of a woman who arranged a recording session with Aladdin Records in Los Angeles. Milburn's relationship with Aladdin lasted eight years during which he produced more than 75 sides. His cover version of "Down the Road a Piece" (1946) was a blues song with a Texas boogie beat that was similar in many respects to rock music. However, none became popular until 1949 when seven of his singles got the attention of the R&B audience. "Hold Me Baby" and "Chicken Shack Boogie" landed numbers eight and nine on Billboard's survey of 1949's R&B Bestsellers. He became one of the main performers associated with the Central Avenue music scene in Los Angeles. He was also a popular touring artist, and won awards from both Down Beat magazine (Best Blues and Jazz Star) and Billboard magazine (Top R&B Artist). Among his best-known songs was "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer". During 1950 Milburn's "Bad, Bad, Whiskey" scored the top of the R&B record chart and began a series of drinking songs (none written by Milburn, but several composed by Rudy Toombs). However, there is not any evidence that Milburn had an alcohol problem.

Milburn continued his successful drinking songs through 1952 ("Thinking and Drinking", "Trouble in Mind") and was by now touring the country playing clubs. While touring the Midwest that summer, he announced that he would disband his combo team and continue as a solo act and that autumn he joined Charles Brown for a Southern concert tour. For the next few years each of his tours was composed of a series of one-nighters. After three years of solo performing he returned to Houston during 1956 to reform his band. During 1957 Milburn's releases with Aladdin Records did not sell well, and the record label, having its own problems, terminated. He tried to regain commercial success with a few more releases with Ace Records but his time had passed. Radio airplay was emphasizing on the teenage market.

Milburn's final recording was for an album by Johnny Otis (Note: On the album cover, for some reason, Milburn's name was spelled with an "e" at the end). This was during 1972 after he had been incapacitated by a stroke, so much so that Otis had to play the left-hand piano parts for his enfeebled old friend. His second stroke resulted in amputation of a leg because of circulatory problems. He died soon after at the age of 52 years from a third stroke.

Actually I was very surprised... jump blues on Blue Note? Well, not quite... Most (but not all) of the selections on this album come from the Imperial and Alladin labels... only one single is an actual Blue Note reissue... that said, many of the sides until recently were quite rare, nearly forgotten and hard to find... liberated from the vaults, this selection of hard swinging and grooving jump blues spanning the late 40's until 1960 will disappoint few fans of classic Rock and Roll/R&B, though it might be pointed out that there's a similar 2 CD collection that's even higher on my list, the now out of print Capital JUMPIN' LIKE MAD compilation.

Still, while some tracks are duplicates, others are rarities that I don't think are available anywhere else... and personally speaking, even though tunes like Safronia B, I Ain't Drunk and Fine Brown Frame can be found else where, I have no complaints about sitting through them again and again and again anyhow... I love Jump Blues and this CD has 26 tracks of it at its best... no complaints. ~Eddie Lansberg/amazon

Amos Milburn - Blues, Barrelhouse & Boogie Woogie: The Best Of Amos Milburn 1946-55 (3-Disc set)

Here's a very reasonable compromise between the pricey Mosaic box and EMI's incomplete single-disc treatment of Milburn's Aladdin legacy: a three-disc, 66-song package that's heavy on boogies and blues and slightly deficient in the ballad department (to that end, his smash "Bewildered" was left off). Everything that is aboard is top-drawer, though -- the booze odes, many a party rocker, and a plethora of the double-entendre blues that Milburn reveled in during his early years. The absent 1956 remake of "Chicken Shack Boogie" is a humongous omission, though. ~Bill Dahl

~excerpt from the bio by Bil Dahl
