From Vancouver Island to Newfoundland, the spirit of the blues - on the face of it so different from what people percieve to be our national Canadian character - is alive and well. What began in Mississippi and migrated to Chicago, has spread all over the world. There are probably blues bands in Baie Comeau and Brandon, as well as in Camrose and Cornwall, Stephensville and Saskatoon, Windsor and Wetaskiwin.

Each week, Saturday Night Blues - the national radio network's weekly two-hour extravaganza of downhome music - offers a two-hour tour of the best blues in the world. When the program was in its initial planning stages, it was decided to feature as much made-in-Canada blues as possible - and there was no shortage to choose from. This compilation celebrates the fourth season of the program, and it also celebrates the rich diversity of home-grown music in the blues traditions. /Excerpt from the liner notes by Holger Peterson

Dutch (b Norman) Mason. Singer, guitarist, pianist, b Lunenburg, NS, 19 Feb 1938, d Truro, NS, 23 Dec 2006. Raised in Kentville, NS, he played several instruments during his youth, including drums in a jazz band. The earliest of his own groups, which worked around Nova Scotia during the mid-1950s, were in a rock 'n' roll or 'rockabilly' style. Mason, a singer, pianist and guitarist, was introduced to the blues via recordings of B.B. King, who would remain an important influence. Mason performed in Toronto as early as 1959, but based his career in Nova Scotia. During the 1970s he performed in a succession of blues bands in a variety of bars such as Sullivan's in Halifax and the Wyse Owl in Dartmouth. He tirelessly toured Canada as part of the Dutch Mason Trio with musicians such as bassist Ronnie Miller and drummer Ken Clattenburg, building an audience for the blues and earning the nickname "Prime Minister of the Blues."

As his reputation for being a colourful performer in a tough, fundamental, urban blues style grew during the late 1970s and the 1980s, he began working on the club circuit across the country, appearing frequently at the Rising Sun in Montreal and Albert's Hall in Toronto.

Mason's first LPs from 1971, Dutch Mason Trio at the Candlelight (Paragon ALS-263) and Putting It All Together (Marathon MS-2107), were followed in 1976 by The Blues Ain't Bad (Owl Blues Productions OBP-2008), in 1977 by Janitor of the Blues (Solar SAR-2020), in 1979 by Wish Me Luck (Lon PS-733/Attic MLAT-1142), in the early 1980s by Special Brew (Attic LAT-1093) and Gimmee A Break (Attic LAT-1114), and in 1991 by I'm Back (Stony Plain SPCD-1169). In 1998, to celebrate his 60th birthday, CBC Radio recorded a live tribute CD that included Charles "Bucky" Adams (saxophone), Nova Scotia Mass Choir, Doris Mason, Sam Moon, Frank MacKay and Dutch Mason.

Mason was nominated for Best Blues Album at the 1994 Juno Awards and Half Ain't Been Told (2004), earned him a nomination for Best Blues Album at the 2005 East Coast Music Awards.

Mason was one of the original inductees to the Canadian Jazz and Blues Hall of Fame, and in 2005, Norman Byron (Dutch) Mason became a Member of the Order of Canada.

In 2005 Dutch Mason's son, Garrett Mason, earned a Juno Award for Best Blues album.

This powerful compelling vocalist can belt out funky blues vocals and also pours the sweetest sultry tones into jazz ballads and swinging dance tunes. She is intriguing to watch live and inspiring to listen to in any medium. Born in Dartmouth Nova Scotia she has taken her music around the world via the internet and radio shows in the US, Germany, Britain, Yugoslavia, Belgium, France and the UK.

Eileen was born into musical family and was exposed to many different types of jazz, blues and classical, and broadway style music in her childhood. The R and B of the sixties and seventies certainly have left stamp in Eileen's life, also. If you listen to her music you can hear this clearly. Eileen's most recent privilege was to sing "Bluesman" at the award ceremony for Dutch Mason 's induction into the Order of Canada, at the Lt. Governors House in Halifax. Eileen Joyce has experience of many facets of the music industry, particularly in her dedicated promotion of the Atlantic Canadian Blues and other artists. She was founder and president of Blues East from 1995-98 which produced two well loved Blues festivals. Although Blues East is no longer active, Eileen co-founded the East Coast Blues Society in 2002 which shares the vision of the original group with the organizational power of an experienced board.

The newest project Bluesman a tribute was brought on by the sad death of one of Nova Scotia's favourite blues men Rick Jeffery, singer and songwriter guitarist, harpist and best known for his many years in Dutch Mason's band. Eileen wrote a song Bluesman, inspired by the life of the bluesmen she knew and, the cd was a labour of love. Eileen invited friends Joe Murphy, Dutch Mason, John Campbelljohn and George Antoniak and Charlie A'court to sing and play duets with her on her tribute to the NS bluesman. Bill Harvey also recorded his song Chocolate Blues for the cd. The cd is rounded out with wonderful songs that Eileen and Bill composed such as Every Shade of Blue an R&B soon to be classic and Why do you Look so Good , a rocking blues tune that is full of fun. Joined once again by a great band Danny Sutherland on bass, Bill Harvey on piano Scott Ferguson on drums, George Antoiniak and Garret Mason on guitar, her daughter Nicole Ouellete and Melanie Donnely on back up vocals and produced at Ferguson Music Production.
