Naturally, there are blues artists in every country. Norway is no exception. The most famous Norwegian exponent of this genre is undoubtedly Bjorn Berge. But Rune Nordvik is making quite a name for himself (internationally) under the name Papaslide. His 3rd album, *The Deepest Pain*, is set to be released this coming March 27.

*The Deepest Pain* is a tribute to his blues hero Johnny Winter, who passed away last year, and consists of 12 songs. Three of these are covers of Winter's songs (*Master Mechanic* / *If You Have A Good Time* / *Serious Heartattack*). But in addition to these three, the album also contains covers of The Dire Straits (*Six Blade Knife*) and Albert Collins (*Give Me My Blues*). The remaining 7 tracks are all written by Rune ‘Papaslide’ Nordvik, either alone or in collaboration with co-writer Fred Ove Reksten, and clearly showcase Johnny Winter's influences. Accompanied by Bjarte Aasmul (guitar), Are Stenfeldt-Nilsen (bass), Geir Åge Johnson (drums), and Lars Hammersland (organ), Nordvik has gathered a few accomplished musicians around him, allowing his slide playing and raw vocal sound to come into their own perfectly and making it a great album to listen to. The only thing that (to me) comes across as somewhat distracting is his pronunciation of English.

When you chase that devil’s music, aka the blues, it never matters where you begin. At some point you must end up in Mississippi, the taproot of blues. Spoonful of Blues is one of the top blues bands in Norway, and though they regularly play throughout Scandinavia they have also played the Sunflower Blues Festival in Clarkesdale, Mississippi. In fact, the band’s singer and harmonica player Jostein Forsberg travels at least once a year to Clarkesdale, Memphis, and other Delta blues hot spots. Those trips have exposed Forsberg to the purest blues in the world and, as co-writer of these 13 originals, his song writing is lean and precise.

Add to that the juke joint authenticity recreated in the band’s home studio in Notodden, where they use the board from the Stax Studios, and you have a band who understands how to best engineer the music you play to sound like the place it comes from. The Mississippi blues that Spoonful admires is built on riveting, hill country grooves established by the driving rhythm section playing below Forsberg’s gritty, electric harmonica and Morten Omild’s raw guitar work.

Jens Olav Haugen is a giant in the music scene in Midt-Telemark and now he has gathered local forces in and around the Akkerhaugen rock community into a new band. Many people know the man as the bass player in the band Spoonful of Blues. Akkerhaugen Raid arose in the wake of Haugen's third solo record, Time Flies. During the recording, it became clear to Jens that this was no longer a solo project and Akkerhaugen Raid was born. In the winter of 2021, the band traveled to practice with an enormous surplus, and ten songs were composed in a short time. Many of the songs were written in collaboration in the rehearsal room. Together with producer Tobias Flottorp Heltzer, they went to Barnsville studio in Hjuksebø to record the record Nite Owl Method. The first single "Part Time Lover" was released on 11 June and the album on 20 August. Akkerhaugen Raid serves raw, pesticide-infested barn-rock from the Telemark delta - for the occasion reinforced with both a brass band and choirs!

Born in Oslo in 1955, the son of a piano builder/tuner, it was fairly natural that Reidar’s fascination with the instrument began at an early age with lessons from age 7, and an early diet of albums by the British blues exponents of the 1960s, The Animals, John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Fleetwood Mac and Stan Webb’s Chicken Shack. Many of these albums were supervised by legendary UK blues producer Mike Vernon who also produced Reidar’s 2nd album ‘Red, White & Blues’.

A collaboration between Fleetwood Mac and pianist Otis Spann particularly appealed to the nimble fingered young Larsen who was soon checking out the likes of Eddie Boyd, Champion Jack Dupree, Memphis Slim and Professor Longhair. Reidar is a highly respected musician working with numerous Norwegian artists, and a much in demand piano man for touring blues stars supporting such names as Lowell Fulson and Peter Green.

In addition to his 10 studio albums, Reidar has also recorded 2 live sets at New York’s legendary Cotton Club with the venue’s own gospel sensation, Anne Sinclair and The Spirit Of Love Singers with whom Reidar and the band have also toured Scandinavia on several occasions. He often makes guest appearances on other acts albums and features on 4 tracks on the latest set by Louisiana Red.

Long recognized as one of the finest blues acts in Scandinavia, Reidar & The Storytellers, his regular band since 1997, are in big demand and play over 100 gigs a year.

Bluestown Records is proud to present the brand new album ‘Songs From Notodden Norway’ by Norway’s popular and in demand rocking blues band Spoonful of Blues. ‘Songs From Notodden Norway’ is the band’s 6th album on Bluestown Records. The album was recorded in Notodden’s own Juke Joint Studio and contains 11 original songs written by Jostein Forsberg and Morten Omlid.

This is music that comes from Notodden, Norway. The strange little industrial town at the entrance to Telemark County. Telemark, the sparsely populated area, which in the old days was considered lawless, and which was not even drawn on the map. A musical industrial town influenced by the area’s folk music, “rallar music” and blues music from distant regions. In this town, which is neither city nor country, or perhaps both, the native Notodden guys and “longtime friends”, Jostein and Morten, have created the content for this album. Recorded in Notodden, together with the other boys in the band, Tony and Eskil. The songs are about Notodden and about the people who live here, while the songs both feel and are perceived as universal. These are Songs From Notodden Norway.

Spoonful of Blues consists of: Jostein Forsberg (vocals, harmonica); Morten Omlid (guitar, vocals); Eskil Aasland (drums, vocals); Tony Caddle (bass).

Note: Morten Omlid passed away on November 24 at the age of 62. R.I.P.
