From the opening bars of the music and the first words uttered by Mariella I literally felt like I was there in a small intimate Dutch Blues Club listening to the band playing live in the moment. I could picture and feel these six very fine musicians weaving their intricate patterns producing both strong and subtle sounds in equal measure. I could visualize myself sat back in my chair, fingers tapping at the edge of the table and head swaying with the sweeps and rhythms of the music.
Mariella Tirotto and the Blues Federation have produced a terrific live album that showcases not only their own talents but every shade of Blues music, there are splashes of traditional shuffles, pulsing Blues rock, slabs of funk and beautiful ballads. Leading lady Mariella impresses throughout with a voice that has a terrific range that moves through the deep and powerful to the delicate and touching. She is matched all the way by the swathes of sounds that are produced by Heins Greten on piano and Hammond and similarly, guitarist Micha Sprenger delivers some superb licks and solos. Add to this a super tight rhythm section of Arno Hagemans on bass and double bass, John Kakiay on drums and Onny Tuhumena on percussion and you have all the ingredients to serve up a heady brew of the Blues and that is exactly what the band has achieved here.
