Smokin' Joe Kubek & Bnois King - Roadhouse Research

Size: 110.4 MB
Time: 47:16
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2003
Styles: Texas Blues
Art: Full

01. Healthy Mama (3:56)
02. Tell Me Why (3:41)
03. Cryin' Shame (4:09)
04. Got To Get Paid (4:09)
05. Better Be Getting It On (3:44)
06. Runnin' Blind (5:45)
07. The Blues Is Still With Us (4:54)
08. Make It Right (4:32)
09. I Need More (5:09)
10. Standing In My Door (7:13)

If the 10 years these Texas guitarists have spent as a team exploring the world bar by bar has been "research," what they've learned is how to please a crowd. The formula's simple: no-frills songs about women and working for a livin', set to meat-and-potatoes arrangements that leave plenty of room for their guitars to roam. Kubek's six-string snarls the loudest, hitting Albert Collins-style sustains and grinding out beefy chords. King skirts around the fringes with his sweet-toned, jazz-informed fills or works at groove-level, anchoring things with his basic, chopping, R&B-style chording. King's vocals are really his trump card. They're smooth and slinky when he's romancing in "Make It Right" or gravelly as Kubek's fluid guitar when he's a driven man in numbers like "Runnin' Blind." The album ends with the kind of guitar grand finale that sets a crowd on fire just after last call. The tune, "Standing in My Door," lets both six-stringers sting. Bnois King lays down a red carpet of sliding chords and Smokin' Joe struts through, doing his own dirty take on B.B. King's vibrato-laden style, bending notes and letting them sing. Then Bnois take the lead, his cleaner fretboard diction cutting even closer to B.B.'s lines before he returns to the microphone to sing the closing chorus. Fans of the Lone Star State's blues guitar tradition need to check these guys out. ~Ted Drozdowski

The Smokin' Joe Kubek Band - Texas Cadillac (Feat. Bnois King)

Size: 114,6 MB
Time: 49:46
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1994
Styles: Texas Blues
Art: Full

01. Mellow Down Easy (3:16)
02. Still A Fool (5:36)
03. Seems Like A Million Years (3:10)
04. Show You What They Say (2:09)
05. TV Light (5:45)
06. Mean Old World (7:09)
07. Texas Cadillac (4:12)
08. Where Can You Be (3:25)
09. Little Red Rooster (4:44)
10. No Time (2:51)
11. Must Have Missed A Turn Somewhere (7:24)

Smokin' Joe Kubek's third Rounder album juggles blues-rock originals with faithful, exuberant covers of Jimmy Reed, Willie Dixon, Muddy Waters and Little Walter Jacobs, among others. Kubek is a good, sometimes captivating guitarist and entertaining singer, if not the greatest pure vocalist, and the band rips through the 11 cuts in a relaxed, yet passionate fashion. But it's hard for any longtime blues fan to get excited over hearing another version of "Little Red Rooster" or "Mean Old World"; it's impossible to reinvent Delta, urban, Texas or West Coast blues. The solution is probably to make the best music you can and hope you hook those willing to listen to contemporary blues rather than spurn it for the originals. ~by Ron Wynn

Smokin' Joe Kubek Band Feat. Bnois King - Got My Mind Back

Year: 1996
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 43:17
Size: 99,6 MB
Styles: Electric blues, Texas blues
Scans: Full

1. Got My Mind Back (4:12)
2. Got You By The Tail (3:31)
3. Can't See For Lookin' (4:42)
4. All The Love There Is (4:57)
5. She's It (4:11)
6. Let Me Take Your Picture (3:46)
7. I'm Here For You (4:27)
8. Don't Touch Her (2:39)
9. Cryin' By Myself (5:33)
10. Double Or Nothing (5:14)

There is no need for guest musicians when Smokin' Joe Kubek is around, for the explosive guitarist completely fills up the ensembles with distortions worthy of acid rock. Kubek is a fairly well-rounded player who occasionally leaves space and during at least two songs ("All the Love There Is" and "She's It") on this CD creates some surprising tones on his instrument (sounding like a keyboard on the former and playing 1970s-style wah-wah notes during the latter). With B'nois King contributing smooth but emotional vocals and bassist Paul Jenkins and drummer Mark Hays supporting Kubek, this is a tight group that probably puts on a killer live show. /Scott Yanow, AllMusic
