Thorbjørn Risager & his band are celebrating their 10 year anniversary with a digital release:
a compilation of songs from their outstanding repertoire: 31 originals including two bonus tracks, plus their excellent arrangement of Baby Please Don’t Go.
The band’s career shows how far a large amount of creativity and hard work can get you.

From their debut, recorded live in a small Copenhagen club in 2004, to their 6th CD ”Dust & Scratches” which got German rock magazines raving about ”a real electroshock for the collapsed twelve-bar-format”, the band has been reaching further and further, both geographically and genrewise, without compromising their artistic profile.

While gathering strength (and money) for their next studio recording, with a planned CD release March 2014, they decided to try a digital release just to sum up their first decade.
Their heart is still buried deep within the blues, but their music is so dynamic and rich, with influences from many genres – but miraculously enough they still manage to fuse all this into a solid and unique style which some critics have called ”The Risager Sound”

Thorbjørn Risager’s exceptional voice has made many international critics compare him to some of the very great legends, even Ray Charles, and they probably couldn’t have imagined that such vocalists existed in a small country like Denmark. But it doesn’t end with that powerful voice – actually it starts there!

The choice of musicians was very fortunate. Thorbjørn chose persons that he really wanted to work with, and only two band members have changed during these ten years. Their energy, tight interplay, and friendliness, is mentioned by everyone who works with the band, and the combination of this dynamic band and Thorbjørn’s extraordinary vocal chords is definitely a key factor behind their success. With over 90 concerts per year (about 60 of these outside Denmark – through the years they have performed in 18 countries!) they are one of Denmark’s most successful music exports. But they have still found the time, inspiration and energy to compose for and record 6 CD’s in 8 years.

A few press quotes:
"Ten tracks of absolutely excellent blues with some great playing and a wild and throaty vocal from Mr Risager" Andy Snipper, BluesMatters UK

"Hardcore Blues anno 2012, a real electroshock for the collapsed twelve-bar-format" Daniel Böhm, Rocktimes DE

”Some big league music.” Art Tipaldi, BluesRevue

”Thorbjorn Risager and his band are a class act. Risager himself is blessed with a distinctive gravelly voice and the horn section is a match for the best in the business.” Chris Kerslake, BluesRevue

”Sometimes a singer's voice just stands out and forces you to listen. Take one part Ray Charles, one part Bob Seger, and one part Joe Cocker and you may have the vocal instrument of Denmark's Thorbjørn Risager. It’s only a matter of time before the secret’s out on this guy. Bottom line: he’s dynamite. Don’t sleep on this one!”

Despite the prominent presence of celebrated blues artist Howlin' Wolf in her family tree, singer Zora Young grew up singing not blues, but gospel. Even when the Mississippi native shook off her roots at the age of seven to relocate with her family to Chicago, she attended the Greater Harvest Baptist Church and continued to sing gospel. It wasn't until later that she switched over to R&B, and evolved into a powerhouse blues vocalist with three decades of experience behind her. She has performed with a long list of artists, including Junior Wells, Jimmy Dawkins, Bobby Rush, Buddy Guy, Professor Eddie Lusk, Albert King, and B.B. King. Her recording credits include collaborations with Willie Dixon, Sunnyland Slim, Mississippi Heat, Paul deLay, and Maurice John Vaughn, among others.

Her own recordings as a solo artist include releases from the labels Deluge, Black Lightning, and Delmark. Young has also performed on both stage and television. She is a veteran of more than 30 tours of Europe, and has been a featured performer three times at the Chicago Blues Festival. She has performed throughout North America, and on stages in Italy, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, France, Switzerland, Greece, Austria, Tai Pei, and Turkey. Her albums include 1991's Travelin' Light from Deluge Records and two releases from Delmark Records, Learned My Lesson in 2000 and Tore Up from the Floor Up in 2005. ~bio by Linda Seida

Zora Young is likely the most internationally traveled female blues singer over three decades. So it is logical for her to hook up with a band of musicians from France, where she has toured extensively. This recording is a combination of studio dates and live performances done over a 16-month period while Young made separate tour dates, all in conjunction with multi-instrumentalist Bobby Dirninger, his various handpicked band ates, and the Paris-based Natural Blues Band, all who are very competent in playing authentic Chicago-style electric blues. The material ranges from some classic tunes everybody knows, to pop, gospel, country songs, and a lone original apiece from Young and Dirninger. Remaining one of the premier female blues vocalists, right up there in league with the late Koko Taylor, Young's got her thing goin' on, carrying in her pipes the soul-sending tradition of her predecessors, while always adding her own somewhat elegant, sly, bawdy, only slightly nasty personal style to the proceedings. Dirninger is impressive as a band leader, and he plays everything -- acoustic or electric guitar, slide guitar, organ, piano, percussion -- while singing just a little bit. He seems to always know what Young needs as inspiration, whether unplugged or amped up. Of the concert performances live at the Caf' Conc' D'Ensisheim in Alsace, the horn-fired, slide guitar-incited shuffle "Wang Dang Doodle," or a slow and sighing "Honey Bee" would certainly do respective progenitors Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters proud. A version of Hank Snow's "I'm Movin' On" is done spot-on and rocking, while the steady rollin' "Rock Me Baby" might sound typical to some, but Young is truly in the zone, and hitting on all cylinders. Young's own "Toxic" is a slow, low-down and dirty blues where Dirninger's talent on the piano shines through. Studio sessions done in Limoges, which many of these French musicians call home, comprise the bulk of the recording, and the results are mixed depending on the material. "Better Be Ready" is surprising in that it has a much more contemporary, organ groove-blues feel, despite the overt wah-wah psychedelic guitar and vocoder underpinnings. The upper-end tracks include two versions of Sunnyland Slim's "Goin' Back to Memphis," one with a modified, modern blues style featuring a shaker and Dirninger's slide guitar in a cool attitude, the other in acoustic trim, done faster. "Mystery Train" rambles the boogie with conviction, while "See See Rider" again features the shaker in shuffle mode. Unfortunately, "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" is played out of tune, "In the Ghetto" is a poor choice though Young's spoken tales of her travails begins to qualify the selection, and Bob Dylan's "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You" in vocal duet with Dirninger is kinda corny. Zora Young is an accomplished singer, one that any blues fan can appreciate, and she is well-represented on this date, just not to her maximum effect. ~ Michael G. Nastos

"The Breeze Kings manage to skirt the line between fidelity to the genre and honesty to the listener ... i.e. they're old school without trying to prove it with cartoonish gestures to some ephemeral Blues God. They won't try to pretend that Muddy Waters has laid his golden hand on their heads and that they are somehow the rightful heirs to a ghostly tradition, but they will pay homage to the forebears without making you feel like you're watching a "Blues as a Themepark" nightclub act. A top notch band with one of the best frontmen in the south. If you're like us and feel like the word "blues" has gotten a bad name by the outfits that make a caricature of the music, you'll be sold without feeling like you were ever asked to buy." ~ Cole Skinner and Gayle Thrower

ANGELS & CLOWNS by Nuno Mindelis, Produced by Duke Robillard featuring the Duke Robillard Band

The long awaited debut release by international Blues guitarist Nuno Mindelis includes thirteen tracks of Blues infused music, with a dash of Hendrix and Stones inspired tone. Nuno is backed by the Duke Robillard Band (Bruce Bears on keyboards, Brad Hallen on bass, and Mark Teixeira on percussion). Angels & Clowns features guest appearances by Duke Robillard, and by fellow Shining Stone Records artist Sunny Crownover.

Born in Angola, deep in the continent where Blues began, Nuno won the Guitar Player Magazine 30th anniversary Best Blues Guitarist award. Blues Revue noted that Nuno’s prior work “explodes with heavy, Hendrix-Vaughan guitar...undeniable technique.” In the United Kingdom, Blues Matters characterized Nuno’s playing as some of the “best blues guitaring around.”

Produced by Duke Robillard, Angels & Clowns takes Nuno’s music to a whole new level. This is where the Blues came from, and where the Blues is going.

“…Explodes with heavy, Hendrix-Vaughan guitar ... undeniable technique ... the playing throughout is imaginative, hard, fast and not for the faint of heart.” Blues Revue

Betty Padgett was born in New Port, NJ but her family moved to Florida where she began her singing career. Initially she lead a girl group dubbed Betty and The Q's. The quartet also included Shirley Smith, Carolyn Griffen and Mary McCoy. They gigged locally before Betty joined other groups which augmented her performance credits to include overseas treks to Switzerland, Germany, Paris, Mexico and Belize. She released her first record, "Sugar Daddy" in 1976 to little fanfare. A 1981 effort, "Sweet Feeling", fared better garnering some regional airplay. All the while she toured with Latimore and TK Records artists Jimmy Bo Horne, David Hudson, and R.B. Hudman.

In the mid-90s Betty sang with Joey Gilmore and band before finally getting another shot at the studio. Two TT's Records released "30 Second Man" in 1998. To promote the record she teamed up with local "white godfather of the blues and soul" Motel Mel and formed Betty Padgett & the Right Stuff band, which has racked up plenty road mileage throughout the gulf coast. Her fourth release, "Closet Lover", dropped in 2004 but it was in 2006 when she really began to make her mark. Her CD "Never Coming Home" and the single of the same time have already made an impact in the Southern Soul market.

What else can be said about Sean Michel other than ‘truth, soul and rock n’ roll’? Well after casually sitting down, plugging in the speakers and cranking up Electric Delta, I can safely say, there is a lot more to be said and heard regarding this soulful man’s talent.

Electric Delta kicks off with “Mississippi Mud,” a blistering riff ravaged tune supplemented with solid drums and Michel’s dominant vocal melody. “Unbelievable” follows it up in a similar punchy fashion and includes a guitar riff and tone that would not be out of place at a Black Keys gig. Already it seems too hard to just put this record on in the background without yielding your attention to it.

It is a tough call on where to place the album’s genre; there is a rather wide range of influences blended together. However, tracks like “The Curse Is Broken” and “The River Song” clearly reveal that essence of delta blues rock with a thumping blues rhythm and hints of a traditional blues vocal pattern. The thing that is truly recognisable in this record is the gospel element of smooth harmonies and spiritual singing. Michel’s character really shines through.

It is hard to find a weak link in this concrete collection of soul induced delta blues, especially with a finale like “Lord I Wait” and its simmering female harmony from Annalisa Nutt. It is a fitting end to a well-rounded album that sees Michel and band explore the roots of their music and very being. The Review: 9/10 ~Review by George Ward

With Lynyrd Skynyrd off the road from the late '70s through the early '80s, an enormous void was created in the Southern rock genre, and such similarly styled acts as .38 Special came to the rescue. Although the group peaked during the early days of MTV ("Hold On Loosely," "Caught Up in You," etc.), .38 Special continued to issue albums, albeit on a less regular basis, throughout the '90s. But after the release of 1997's Resolution, the only new albums to surface from the band were a live set (1999's Live at Sturgis) and, quite oddly, a Christmas set (2001's A Wild-Eyed Christmas Night). By 2004, seven years had passed since their last all-new studio album, and the "Wild-Eyed Southern Boys" were finally ready to deliver a new set, Drivetrain. Surprisingly, the boys have almost completely bypassed the melodic rock approach that made hits out of the aforementioned tunes, as they've toughened up their sound considerably. In fact, it almost appears as though the group is focusing solely on winning over the biker crowd, as evidenced by the tough, almost Zeppelin-like rocker "Hurts Like Love" or from such song titles as "Haley's Got a Harley" and "Trooper With an Attitude." Not exactly what you'd expect from the same band that once supplied the theme song to the 1984 teen comedy drama Teachers. ~ Greg Prato .38 Special (Rock): Don Barnes (vocals, guitar); Donnie Van Zant (vocals); Danny Chauncey (guitar, keyboards); Bobby Capps (keyboards, background vocals); Larry Junstrom (bass instrument); Gary Moffet (drums).

Hailing from New Zealand Billy TK Jnr has toured internationally since 1993 and has earned himself a reputation as a genuine guitar hero in the electric guitar blues scene as well as having video hits with ‘mainstream’ songs.

He has toured and worked with artists like George Thorogood, Jimmy Barnes, The Neville Brothers, Ian Moss and Junior Wells and has performed in the USA, Japan, Australia and around the pacific and has just returned from performing at the Fiji 2012 International Jazz and Blues Festival. Billy TK Jnr with the Groove Shakers made such a great impression with the promoter and punters at the Sydney Blues Festival in 2010 they have asked him to return to the festival in 2012 to be one of the headline acts. Billy first came to prominence in Australia in 2006 via a standout perfromance at the Narooma blues festival, following this Billy made an indent on the Australian tour circuit.

This album has had it’s own story behind it with the sudden and tragic death of his producer BenStockwell, just before finishing the final product. Billy has dedicated one of the album tracks‘Stevies Good Night Blues’ to Ben. After Ben’s tragic death Billy then had to make some serious decisions about the album and it’s direction. He met up with engineer producer of the year Andrew Buckton of 203 Studios in Auckland and decided to re record all the tracks. Billy feels he has a totally polished album ready for the global market place.

“They say that everything is about timing and this album feels like it has 'arrived' at the right location at the right time - I have recorded 2 albums in the past but none of them have ever felt or sounded as good as this - it is kind of a reflection of where I am at in my life' 'The album took 12 months to do - we recorded a first version of it and then lost the use of almost all of those tracks when Ben died'. ‘Sooo we re recorded everything in 4 days and what we have now is better than what we had before' - 'A strange and sad story but with a wonderful ending - I am very proud of this album and what I now have for the world to listen to is up there with the music of my heroes who inspired me to play.” ~Billy TK Jnr

Singer/songwriting guitarist Rusty Zinn shifts gears on his fourth album, and first in nearly five years, to become a blue-eyed, red-headed soulman. That's not to say he abandons the jazzy, guitar-slinging West Coast/Texas swinging sound that dominated his first three releases. In fact, the second track, an original called "Treat You Like a Queen," shows that style is still a primary influence. But Zinnfidelity, Vol. 1 highlights Zinn's love of classic '70s-styled R&B, focusing on his soulful vocals and sizzling arrangements that wouldn't have been out of place on Howard Tate's magnificent debut. To that end, he dusts off obscure sides from Tiny Powell ("Get My Hat"), Sammy Taylor ("Ain't That Some Shame"), and Ricky Allen ("Talkin' Bout You"), all songs that should have been hits but were buried on rare 45s. Zinn attacks them with fresh energy, sticking to the original arrangements but injecting youthful enthusiasm and real emotion into the lyrics. A fan of reggae, he goes all Jimmy Cliff on his own "Put Your Hand in Mine," recalling classic Jamaican music with its horn charts, loping beat, and compressed yet rhythmic drum sound. "Zinn Bootyism" takes its title from its blaxpoitation '70s approach -- a cool, sexy, and funky detour sprayed with afro-sheen pseudo-hip urban speak that doesn't really mesh with the rest of the disc, but is a lot of fun. He also shifts into '60s slow-dance mode on the ballad "In Your Dreams" and the closing a cappella doo wop "Love Him or Leave Him." It's an unusual but appropriate way to end an album that marks an exciting new beginning for an established talent who has been overlooked because his previous releases didn't do him justice or adequately demonstrate his range. That has been rectified on this solid and frisky album, which gives Zinn a new lease on life. ~Hal Horowitz

On the opening salvo of Crossing the Line, the first McBride CD to get a proper U.S. release, McBride mimics the sound of an air raid siren, perhaps announcing his intention to drop a sonic guitar bomb on unsuspecting listeners. "Lead Us Away" is actually a sedate opener, although McBride's technical skill is in evidence, even when he's holding back. With a metallic approach he groans out a catchy, Howlin' Wolf style chorus as he peppers the tune with a short, sharp, cascading lead line that whets your appetite for more, and he delivers. "Heartbreaker" is a short, snotty, midtempo rocker full of screaming guitar, a snarling vocal, and powerful support from drummer Paul Hamilton and bass man Carl Harvey. "Down to the Wire," on which he also plays credible Hammond B-3, is a slow groove that alternates his soulful vocals with volleys of grinding sustained notes. "Don't Be a Fool" is a soulful rocker with a Motown flavor, "Alcatraz" sports a strong horn section, soulful vocals, and more dazzling lead work, while "No Room to Breath" features backing vocals from Mia Simone to support McBride's tortured vocals and understated work on guitar and organ. The Belfast-born McBride started playing when he was 10 and by 15, he had won Young Guitarist of the Year from Britain's Guitarist Magazine. He turned pro in 1994 at age 16, and he's been tearing up the U.K. ever since. As Crossing the Line proves, he's ready to become the next Irish guitar hero.

"Full of fire, Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials hit the floor running and accelerate from there. High-octane, expressive, fiercely articulated, harrowing intensity, raucous slide."
From working at Chicago's Red Carpet Car Wash to appearing on national television, from gigging at the smallest ghetto blues bars to performing on the biggest international concert stages, master bluesman Lil' Ed Williams has come a long way. Mixing smoking slide guitar boogies and raw-boned Chicago shuffles with the deepest slow-burners, Lil' Ed and his blistering Blues Imperials - bassist James "Pookie" Young, guitarist Mike Garrett and drummer Kelly Littleton - deliver the blues, from gloriously riotous and rollicking to intensely emotional and moving. Not since the heyday of Hound Dog Taylor & The HouseRockers has a blues band made such a consistently joyful noise. Currently celebrating 24 rip-roaring years together, Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials ply their musical talents with skills that have been honed to a razor's edge. As much a family as a band, Lil' Ed, Pookie, Mike and Kelly have outlasted sports stars and presidents, musical fads and fashion trends. And together, they continue to make blues history with each and every performance and new recording.

You might have noticed her name in a list of W.C.Handy nominees. Maybe you've heard her perform in a club or at a major festival. It's even possible that you haven't heard of her. Well, her super-bad new disc, "People Love The Blues", is pure impact, and if it takes hype to get the message out, this is a good time to start it. Get hip to Sista Monica now, she's that good. Sista Monica Parker's huge voice and incredible chops give her one of the best instruments around. Her sweet but powerful singing bears traces of admired singers like Etta James and Katie Webster. Teqnique? Monica can blow the element out of her microphone with the best of them ("Somebody Gonna Give Up Something Tonight"), work a late-night ballad with gospel intensity ("A Chnce To Breathe")or quiet sincerity ("It's A Shame, It's A Mystery"), or convincingly deliver an anthemic standard-to-be ("People Love The Blues"). And She's a performer that can hold your attention through an entire humorous narative ("Honey It's Your Fault"). Her phrasing and delivery are unerring and she has attitude to burn. Three covers- Jackie Wilson's "Baby Work Out", Albert Collin's "Put Your Shoe On The Other Foot", and James Cleveland's "Walk Around Heaven All Day"- aside, Sista Monica wrote and produced everything on this album, alone or in conjunction with keyboard player Danny B. All the material is top-notch, mostly in a contemporary style not too far from the great sound of Collins' Alligator and Pointblank records. Her band, including Ron E. Beck on drums, a horn section and several guitar and bass men, smolders on slow blues and boils over on the funk. The record spotlights several appearances each from some of the best guitarists in the businnes: the impeccable Dan Caron (of the late Charles Brown's Band), versatile Jimmy Thackery and mighty Larry McCray, who defines both raw power and beautiful understatement in his contributions. Enough said. If you dig contemporary blues, it's hard to imagine that you won't like Sista Monica. She's star material all the way. This is a near-perfect record, and, like the title says, People Love The Blues. ~Tom Hyslop

Bullfrog Blues Machine are more than just an above average band, they are high quality musicians. Bullfrog Blues Machine are no strangers to the blues scene in the Netherlands and Belgium. With the release of their latest album, Cross That Line “(Munich Records, 2005) it indicates that they wish to go further on down the highway to where it will take them. This is without the essence of their main source of inspiration - the American roots music - out of sight.

The road from Texas to Illinois and back is made with the input of their own groove and soul, “It’s our art. It’s who we are, and it’s bound to come out!. It’s who we are, and it’s bound to come out!.

The band’s style is dominated by their own compositions: original and groovy. Steady drums and bass are the blues machine for this guitar-oriented band. The live sound is characterized by a bold rhythmic bass where vocals, guitar and keys clearly on top. By a continuing renewal of the repertoire, a good dose of live improvisation and regular polishing of old songs, a concert by the band is never the same.

BULLFROG BLUES MACHINE: Hans Klerken - Guitar and Vocals; Frans Mathijssen - Keyboards; Ben Bouman - Harp; Chris Janssen - Bass and Dobro; Bren Geerlings - Drums.

"This is the best band I've ever had," Musselwhite proclaims on the back of this LP; longtime fans would find that debatable. Rather than schooled on the Chess sounds that provided Charlie with his foundation, these guys play a Malaco strain of blues, and Tommy Hill is simply one of the busiest (read: obnoxious) drummers anywhere. A "Boogie Chillen" takeoff ("River Hip Mama") is surprisingly not just same-old, same-old, but for the most part the funkified blues contrasts sharply with the album's two most poignant numbers, the jazz standard "Yesterdays" (with Charlie on chromatic, borrowing from trumpeter Clifford Brown's "strings" album) and "My Road Lies in Darkness" -- just Charlie and his acoustic guitar. ~Dan Forte

J.C. Bovard was born July 13th, 1966 in Fribourg, Switzerland. As a child, Little Jc started messing around with harmonicas, trying to follow in his father's footsteps, who was a harmonica player himself. Only in his teenage did he sarted to play seriously, just after he had the shock of his life listening to a recording by the great Sonny Boy Williamson II. He would listen to it night and day, and say today, "it was a revelation, I'd never heard such music before!". After that he really got involved in Blues music, hanging out with other musicians and jamming with them occasionally.

In 1985 he put together his first band, "Black Cat Bone", but switched to Little Jc & his blues band, after he learned that the original name was already used by another group. In 1989, Jc met Louisiana Red and the legendary Bluesman gave him a try-out, after Little Jc asked if he could play with him. Jc remembers, after two or three songs at the sound check Louisiana Red came to me and said: "OK Little Boy! you're gonna play with me tonight,...I like the way you blow your harp!". Red took him under his wing, and from that day on, hired him for most of his concerts in Europe. "And he taught me well: beside his guitar, Red is also a great harp player who learned from the harmonica virtuosos of the Chicago Golden Years themselves, people like Little Walter, Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell. He would show me a lot of their tricks!"

Meanwhile, Little Jc kept his band together, and they started playing more and more all over Europe, even as faraway as Russia. He's sat in with great street musicians in Chicago, and jammed with blues artists in the windy's blues clubs. He also shared the stage with such people as Eddie C. Campbell, Johnny Johnson, Zora Young, Bill Thomas, Carey Bell, RL Burside. He played drums with Raoul Ficel Blues Trio with who he recorded two CDs, second guitar with Chicago harp player Matthew Skoller, bass guitar for Rock Bottom, toured with his band backing Chicago artist Tommy Mc Cracken and also toured France and Switzerland with Chicago Blues singer Big Time Sarah.

In year 2000, after some bad days of misfortune that left him with no band, he half retired from the business, only giving his ok to play with Louisiana Red and concerts in solo the way he sarted 20 years ago : the Doctor Ross one man band style. During this time he also managed to learn a new trade as lumberjack, get married and give his wife a child. He says today: ". I am now back on my feet and stand stronger than ever... It won't hurt me anymore, I just feel sorry for those people ".

No matter if you'll find him playing by himself with his outstanding one man band formula, with a band or backing up great bluesmen like Louisiana Red: he'll give you his best!!!
