Jimmy Thackery - Guitar

Album: Guitar
Size: 142,4 MB
Time: 61:28
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2003
Styles: Instrumental blues
Art: Full

1. Hang Up & Drive (3:17)
2. Roy's Bluz (8:14)
3. Sinner Street (4:15)
4. Jump For Jerry (3:44)
5. Blues 'Fore Dawn (4:54)
6. Burford's Bop (4:10)
7. Apache (3:57)
8. All About My Girl (4:32)
9. Last Night (4:29)
10. Jimmy's 'Rude Mood' (7:00)
11. Edward's Blues (6:42)
12. Jimmy's Detroit Boogie (6:09)

Electric blues fans flock to Jimmy Thackery to hear his fiery guitar, and tolerate his serviceable but far from thrilling gruff vocals. So, the compilers of this Blind Pig-era (six albums from 1992-2000) collection wisely stuck with all instrumental cuts. While that doesn't adequately summarize his career during this time, it sure makes for a dazzling disc displaying Thackery's sizzling six-string prowess. Although it is compiled predominately of previously released material (along with three unreleased live tracks), and these tunes are certainly among his best, by avoiding the "Greatest Hits" tag Blind Pig makes it easy to zero in on Thackery's most incendiary guitar showcases.

Using his stripped down Drivers backing band generally comprised only of bass and drums, allows the guitarist plenty of room to strut his no-nonsense rockin' blues. From the speedy "Hang Up & Drive," to the lumbering power of nearly nine minutes of Roy Buchanan's "Roy's Blutz" and the Dick Dale-styled surf-twang of "Apache," there is no doubt that Thackery is a wildly talented player who effortlessly turns up the heat on his fretboard shenanigans. Whether shuffling around "All About My Girl" or swinging into the jump blues of "Jump for Jerry" (with Jimmy Carpenter's scorching tenor sax), or bopping through "Burford's Bop," Thackery shows he's no one-trick pony by fluently switching musical gears as easily as he slides down the neck of his instrument.

Slow blues lovers will slobber over his tasty work on "Blues 'Fore Dawn" and the live "Edward's Blues," but it's on the John Lee Hooker riff of the album closing "Jimmy's Detroit Boogie" (think ZZ Top's "La Grange," but not as grungy) where Thackery pulls out all the stops in a tour de force that intensifies throughout its six minutes. Sure there's plenty of Stevie Ray Vaughan-type gymnastics here, but the guitarist's obvious talents and fire-shooting licks will cause even the most jaded blues rockers to admit that this guy delivers the goods. A skimpy pamphlet with lackluster liner notes (there is no indication which album the tracks are from) doesn't diminish this disc's non-stop intensity. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Tab Benoit & Jimmy Thackery - Whiskey Store

Album: Whiskey Store
Size: 120,4 MB
Time: 51:58
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2002
Styles: Blues
Art: Full

1. I Ain't Broke (3:12)
2. Whiskey Store (3:27)
3. Away, Away Too Long (3:29)
4. Strange Things Happen (4:40)
5. Nice And Warm (7:38)
6. Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat (5:50)
7. Unknown Legend (4:45)
8. Bad Luck Blues (6:15)
9. Freddy's Combo (4:25)
10. The Last Time (3:47)
11. Bone Pickin' (4:25)

The first summit meeting for these two journeymen roots-blues-rock guitarists is a rousing triumph. On paper, Tab Benoit's less aggressive New Orleans style wouldn't seem to mesh with Jimmy Thackery's boozy, tough, rough and tumble approach. But like Lennon and McCartney, each complements the other. Benoit lets his Delta and Texas-styled roots seep into the proceedings, tempering Thackery's more bombastic leads. Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble rhythm section and keyboardist Reese Wynans provide dexterous support, as does ace harp master Charlie Musselwhite. Most importantly, this isn't just a bunch of songs built around endless jams.

The selections are mostly covers, but the wide range of writers involved - from Bob Dylan, the Stones, and Neil Young to obscurities from legends like Percy Mayfield and Eddie Jones - shows the scope of the guitarists' influences. Only on the Benoit-penned slow blues "Nice and Warm" - reprised from his solo debut and at almost eight minutes the album's longest track - do the guitar pyrotechnics overwhelm the song. But even here, the musicians are obviously inspired by each other and deliver dazzling solos, each more jaw-dropping than the last. Everything sizzles, yet a mid-album detour into a laid-back version of Neil Young's country-ish ballad "Unknown Legend" works surprisingly well, especially with Musselwhite's poignant harp solo.

Jagger/Richards' "The Last Time" gets a rootsy rave-up treatment, as does Dylan's "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat," and the duo clicks into shuffle mode on Thackery's instrumental Freddie King tribute, "Freddy's Combo." For the most part, the over the top guitar shenanigans this partnership threatens thankfully never materialize, with both six-string benders providing short, succinct, yet scorching solos within the framework of the tunes. Lead vocals are shared, although Benoit is clearly the better singer, with Thackery's rasp getting by on sheer enthusiasm. A treat for fans of both artists as well as a stirring contemporary electric blues album by any yardstick, Whiskey Store successfully joins two gifted guitarists in a session that proves greater than the sum of its very talented parts. /Hal Horowitz, AllMusic

Jimmy Thackery, Tom Principato & The Assassins - Partners In Crime

Album: Partners In Crime

5. Today I Started Lovin' You Again (5:32)

10. Remington Ride (Live) (6:04)
11. Honey Hush (Live) (7:55)

Singer, songwriter, and guitar virtuoso Jimmy Thackery carved an enviable niche for himself in the world of electric blues. Known for his gritty, blue-collar approach and marathon live shows, Thackery was for many years part of the Nighthawks, one of the hardest-working blues bar bands in North America. By the late '80s, he was touring and recording under his own name, and finding widespread acceptance on the festival circuit. His hard-edged, tough-as-nails approach to guitar playing and his trio's driving rhythm section holds appeal for fans of both the straight-ahead blues of Muddy Waters and the roots rock of Bruce Springsteen and Joe Grushecky. Like the Nighthawks and Grushecky's Houserockers, much of the material Thackery performs can safely be called blues or blues-rock. Hardcore blues like "It's My Own Fault" and popular blues-rock chestnuts like "Red House" from Jimi Hendrix are fair game for Thackery & His Drivers, which included Michael Patrick on bass and Mark Stutso on drums and vocals.

Born in Pittsburgh, Thackery was raised in Washington, D.C. In high school, he played in a band with Bonnie Raitt's brother, David, who exposed him to the music of Buddy Guy; Thackery saw both Guy and Jimi Hendrix perform in Washington, D.C. Thackery joined the Nighthawks in 1974, after being introduced to harmonica man Mark Wenner by fellow guitarist Bobby Radcliff, who was then based in D.C. Thackery recorded more than 20 albums with the Nighthawks and toured the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Japan. He left the band in 1987 and struck out on his own, needing a break from the Nighthawks' 300-nights-a-year tour schedule. He formed a new band, Jimmy Thackery & the Assassins, and toured the East Coast heavily with that band until they split up in 1991. Thackery then formed a trio, Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers, quickly forging a name for himself on the blues festival and club circuit through a prolific recording pace and a lot of roadwork.

His albums for the San Francisco-based Blind Pig label included Empty Arms Motel (1992), Sideways in Paradise (Jimmy Thackery and John Mooney, 1993), Trouble Man (1994), Wild Night Out! (1995), Drive to Survive (1996), Switching Gears (1998), and Sinner Street (2000). The latter added saxophone player Jimmy Carpenter. In 2002, Thackery signed on with the blues division of Telarc Records, releasing We Got It in 2002 followed by True Stories in 2003, Live in 2004, and Healin' Ground in 2005. Switching to Rykodisc, he released In the Natural State in 2006, followed by Solid Ice on Telarc Records in 2007. Inside Tracks appeared a year later in 2008, also from Telarc Records.

His 1998 album includes guest performances by Joe Louis Walker, Lonnie Brooks, Chubby Carrier, and Francine Reed, but any of Thackery's albums will delight fans of tough, heavy, driving guitar playing. For a taste of his thorough mastery of several styles, Drive to Survive touches on rockabilly, jazz, bebop, and surf music. Most of Thackery's albums include at least a few covers mixed in with his batch of self-penned songs. /Biography by Richard Skelly, AllMusic

Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers - Feel The Heat

Size: 158.6 MB
Time: 68:10
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2011
Styles: Electric Blues
Art: Full

01. Feel The Heat (6:06)
02. Ain't Gonna Do It (2:47)
03. Blind Man In The Night (8:54)
04. Hang Up And Drive (5:14)
05. Please Accept My Love (4:35)
06. Take My Blues (5:54)
07. Bluphoria (5:56)
08. I'll Be Your Driver (Where You Wanna Go?) (5:51)
09. Bomb The Moon (2:39)
10. I'm Gone (5:55)
11. Wannabe (6:19)
12. Fading Heart (7:54)

Whether Jimmy Thackery headlines a festival or jams for hours in one of numerous blues bars that dot the musical landscape, he'll always unleash an intense volley of rockin' blues guitar guaranteed to leave crowds emotionally spent. His double edged guitar dynamics allow him to fire off tracer missiles, bend a note so it will fit under a limbo bar, run off dive bomber riffs, and find space within the trembling of one stinging note. AI put all my senses on hold and find the zone and follow what's inside. There's an electricity from your mind to your heart to your fingers. You just try and remember to breathe. He's one of the few blues guitarists who learned first hand from the masters of the blues, not off a blues record or DVD. It was Thackery's time on stage with Muddy Waters that is branded deep within his musical soul. AMuddy was one of those guys who was constantly encouraging. He never told you what to do, but he always told you what you were doing wrong. He never minced words about that. The first time on stage with Muddy, I was in such awe of him that I just kept my eyes and ears open and just picked up on everything he did. It was the dynamics they had that became so ingrained in us. We heard it on the records and then stood on stage and saw how it worked. Though many associate Jimmy with his 15 years as the co-founder of the Nighthawks, he ended his time with them in 1987. Since then, Jimmy has been on the road as a solo musician for 24 years, proving each night that he is still the guitar powerhouse in the blues. Once described as a "Four Hour Musician", the writer went on to explain that is not how long he plays, but how long you should drive to see him perform. His shows will pique your emotions from hard-driving rock to jaw-dropping instrumentals to tear-jerking ballads.

A combination of their complete 1979 'Eyewitness Blues' and six cuts from the 1980 'Bout With The Blues'.

Backed by a who's who of old-guard Washington musicians, Hodge presents a sweat-inducing set of house-rockers that cover the R&B landscape, including the rollicking 'Elmo's Blues,' the jumping 'I-Re-Peat' and the Little Featish 'To the Left.' `Dave Nuttycombe for the Washington City Paper.

If you wanted to come home from work, take off your shoes and sit down in a Lazy Boy to the Eyewitness Blues - here it is. The Catfish Hodge Band has released the 60 minute edition of Eyewitness Blues, but don't sit down yet. This GENES CD compilation of two previous Adelphi Records sessions is a party CD waiting to happen. All except two cuts are originals and Catfish does write some good material. His band turns in a credible performance, but Catfish's vocals definitely lead the group. Some of the highlights include 'Cold, Cold' and 'Record Executive Blues', which features a great harp solo from James Cotton. The disc features solid guitar solos from Jimmy Thackery. ~Dean Barker

Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers - Drive To Survive

Year: 1996
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 45:50
Size: 106,2 MB
Styles: Electric blues
Scans: Full

1. Drive To Survive (4:09)
2. You Got Work To Do (4:17)
3. That's How I Feel (5:06)
4. All About My Girl (Instrumental) (4:32)
5. Play To Win (4:18)
6. Cool Guitars (3:43)
7. Slow Down Baby (3:50)
8. Long, Lean & Lanky (3:33)
9. Burford's Bop (Instrumental) (4:09)
10. Rub On Up (4:11)
11. Apache (Instrumental) (3:58)

Put your seat belt on before you "drive" this one. Thackery lets loose on both guitar and vocals here, with a solid, screaming set of originals and a handful of covers. Although it probably wasn't the intention, Drive to Survive quickly became synonymous with "Apache," the jungle drum-flavored surf instrumental that Thackery included simply because he "wanted to do a surf tune that no one had messed with." In reality, more than 20 artists had recorded the Ventures tune by the time Drive to Survive was released. Nonetheless, it served as a much-requested anthem of sorts in Thackery's live shows for years to come.

"All About My Girl" is a Jimmy McGriff-meets-Albert Collins instrumental, and "Burford's Bop" is high-energy swing. Thackery delivers tough, gritty vocals on the JL Hooker/ZZ Top-style "You Got Work to Do." The bluesiest offering, "Rub On Up," features some serious guitar licks and has lyrics that could make just about anyone blush. The real gem on Drive to Survive, though, is the ballad "That's How I Feel." Drummer Mark Stutso handles the vocals, and both the song and the singing are superb. /Ann Wickstrom, AllMusic

Guitarist-singer Jimmy Thackery's 1998 set stretches beyond the blues. A ferocious rockish guitarist with a vocal style that ranges from shouting to mellow, Thackery is easily the main star of his disc. However the other members of his Drivers are strong (Al Gamble on organ and piano, bassist Michael Patrick and drummer Mark Stutso), and there are features for guest accordionist Chubby Carrier on "Take Me With You When You Go" (a zydeco romp) and singer Reba Russell ("Dancing on Broken Glass") plus a helpful appearance apiece by Lonnie Brooks and Joe Louis Walker. From blues to rock with touches of zydeco, country, pop and folk, Thackery constantly stretches himself and gives the music his best. ~Review by Scott Yanow

Cathy Ponton King - 2 albums: Lovin' You Right / The Crux

Cathy Ponton King plays Telecaster guitar, BLUES, ORIGINAL MUSIC, jazzy blues, 'Nawlin's music and SWING, Rock 'n Roll/rhythm and blues and sweet ballads. She was born in Washington DC and attended the University of Md. and earned her degree in Journalism, and subsequently worked at ABC news after college, before making the decision to put journalism on the back burner as the call to sing, write and perform music was overwhelming.

Later she got the chance to open for Albert King's band at the Wax Museum in Washington, once a large concert venue, and he called her on stage to sing with his band. She also opened for blues greats Koko Taylor, Albert Collins, Earl King, Bo Diddley, Willie Dixon, Son Seals, Paul Butterfield, Roomful of Blues(with Ronnie Earl on guitar),Marcia Ball, Sonny Landreth, the late Clarence Gatemouth Brown, and Buddy Guy. At the time Cathy was launching her own music career, many of these giants of blues were older and most of them have passed on now. Her education and learning in the style and family feeling and affection with these musicians, has left her with indelible memories and love for the musicians and their music and the sacrifices they made for the music, and she got to meet and socialize and learn and get to know this passing generation at a time when their careers were ending, and hers was just beginning. Fortuitous timing.

Cathy has three CDs of original blues, swing, rockabilly and beautiful ballads. His soulful guitar work touches nerves previously exposed by the idiom's legends - Stevie, Muddy, Otis Rush, etc. - and his clean picking and scorching tone are irresistible.” – Guitar Player
Jimmy Thackery is without doubt one of the finest guitar players of his generation. He’s one of the few blues guitarists who learned his craft first-hand from the masters of the blues such as Muddy Waters, rather than from recordings. On Extra Jimmies, Blind Pig Records has compiled a sterling collection of gems from perhaps his most creative period (1992 – 1998).

Blind Pig is proud to have helped Jimmy launch his solo career. After a fifteen year stint as co-founder and lead guitarist of the legendary blues-rock band The Nighthawks, he formed the popular R&B band The Assassins. Five years later he put together his three piece band called The Drivers to highlight his explosive guitar. Jimmy and his band became renowned road warriors, playing close to 300 dates a year and establishing him as one of the premier guitarists around.

The re-mastered tracks on Extra Jimmies are taken from Thackery’s Blind Pig debut album, “Empty Arms Motel,” as well as from two other out-of-print CD titles – “Wild Night Out!” (a live recording) and “Switching Gears.”

Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers - Wide Open

[6:28] 11. Run Like The Wind
[5:49] 12. Pondok

Work began on this project in 2012 at Tony's Treasures in Cadiz, Ohio, our favorite studio to work in these days. Two of the tracks, Hard Luck Man and Someone Who's Crying Tonight were loaded onto iTunes for download only, while the other tracks from that session remained in the giant vault at Tony's Treasures Studios. These two tunes have had a remix to blend with the new songs a bit more.

2013 proved to be a very busy year for me, personally, as we relocated far from Busch, Arkansas, where Ms.Sally and I had lived for ten years. I spent the winter months in an exotic new setting in my little demo recording studio, writing, reworking and polishing material for the new session. All of the songs were mixed and then e-mailed to the band to scrutinize and learn. It was April of this year when things became conducive to finishing up the project and to get the real studio versions recorded. As usual, Mark and Cody had everything at the studio tweaked and ready to rock.

We set up George's drums in the" big room" to get an open room sound for him. I used a little different set up this time, utilizing some rooms newly constructed upstairs as isolation booths for guitar. Working in a stereo format, the guitar signals were separated and fed back to the control room where I was free to use the same monitor speakers as the engineer and not have to rely on headphones. I've always found them to be a bit cumbersome, and they don't give me the sound reproduction that the studio monitors do. The session went by quickly (always a positive sign that the creative "juices" are flowing), and we mixed everything while we were still in Ohio.

We are all very proud of this CD and hope you get as much joy out of listening to it as we had creating it. It is my first CD that all the songs are original, with no cover tunes. Many emotions were involved in these 12 songs, so I hope you enjoy the journey and the visions I've expressed. We hope you'll order yours today, and let us know what you think about it! When it arrives, throw it in and let 'er rip!

Jim McCarty - 2 albums: Live! / Live From Callahan's

James William McCarty (born June 1, 1945) is an American blues rock guitarist from Detroit, Michigan. He has performed with Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, the Buddy Miles Express, Cactus, the popular Detroit rock band The Rockets, the Detroit Blues Band, and more recently, Mystery Train. He also recorded with Jimi Hendrix and Bob Seger. He plays in a heavy blues-rock style that has inspired fledgling guitar players for more than 40 years.

In 2006, he participated in a Cactus reunion, performing in New York City, Sweden, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. It coincided with the release of a new Cactus album, Cactus V. In 2007, Cactus played a Detroit date, a McCarty homecoming, to a sold-out, standing room only house.

In 2005, Les Paul recorded Les Paul and Friends: American Made, World Played, with an all-star band. He covered 69 Freedom Special, an instrumental tune co-written by McCarty and recorded while in the Buddy Miles Express. In February 2006, Les Paul won a Grammy for his cover of the song, thus propelling McCarty into another award-winning arena as songwriter. In 2009, a new band, the Hell Drivers were created. The members are Jim McCarty, Johnny "Bee" Badanjek, Marvin Conrad(bass), and Jim Edwards(vocals). A high-energy band, they play a variety of Detroit rock'n'roll from Iggy, The Rockets, Mitch Ryder, Bob Seger and more to great critical acclaim.

The Nighthawks - 2 albums: Hard Living / American Landscape

The Nighthawks were formed in 1972 by harp player and vocalist Mark Wenner and guitarist Jimmy Thackery. After numerous changes in personnel, the line-up would solidify in 1974 with the addition of bassist Jan Zukowski and drummer Pete Ragusa. Basing their early sound on the classic Chicago blues of legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, the band fast found an eager audience performing on a thriving D.C. music scene that included talents like guitarists Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton.

As they expanded their sound to include elements of root-rock, rockabilly, and soul the Nighthawks would become one of the most in-demand live bands of the decade, regularly pulling down 300+ shows a year from 1974 through the mid-1980s. The band's on-stage chemistry was incendiary, and they would find themselves opening shows for, or backing up such artists as Muddy Waters, James Cotton, and John Hammond.

On this 2009 album, the Nighthawks, a long-running East Coast roots-rock ensemble, present a fine set of distinctly American tunes. Highlights include a bluesy, no-frills version of Tom Waits's fire-and-brimstone classic, "Down in the Hole," and a charmingly loose rendition of Bob Dylan's "More Likely You'll Go Your Way (and I'll Go Mine)."
