12. Big Blues From Texas (5:01)

When this album was originally cut in 1992 Phillip Walker was already a veteran. His career spanned the early days with Clifton Chenier in Texas and Louisiana, a long stint in California and some seminal records in the 1970's with Bruce Bromberg. This CD was the start of his 'grand old man' phase. Backed by a superb band of musicians who had honed their skills on the road, Phillip's background, culture and musical experience just oozes out into the music.

For the new mix, add an engineer who's a genius at working on archive material to make something fresh. Otis Grand made three other 'and Otis Grand' albums for JSP - Guitar Shorty, Joe Houston and Joe Louis Walker. Arguably, none have made a better album. Originally this album was greeted as simply great. Now it sounds like a modern masterpiece. /Amazon

Otis Grand and I had been working on this project off and on for a few years before his tragic and untimely death. What we have here is a part of a magnificent body of work. Otis was guitarist, producer, bandleader, songwriter and general key figure on the blues scene. In the mid 1980s I was busy touring some great U.S. Blues acts all over the U.K. Suddenly out of nowhere comes this American guitarist with a British band and a great singer in Earl Green. Otis Grand became the biggest thing on the British circuit and in Europe too. Later on we would spend time together around the first Burnley Blues Festival. Otis had his very well deserved headlining spot. It's that show which is Disc A here and it is released in it's entirety for the first time.

Our first real artistic collaboration was the Guitar Shorty album. I had heard rumours of this incredible L.A. based guitarist who was the brother in law of Jimi Hendrix. I thought Otis was the perfect bandleader to back Shorty playing real blues style, no going 'commercial' and no nod to blues/rock. The result... perfection. The next opportunity was a real legend Phillip Walker. This track was cut at a lovely studio in London. Texas Blues with an L.A. twist was Phillip's style and this track stands with his best. The next studio set we collaborated on was with the man who virtually invented honking tenor sax, Joe Houston.

We also have Otis with Joe Louis Walker - both at the top of their game here. What's most important is not personalities, egos, honour or 'reputations'... but the art, the music. Throughout my time in this blues game I have become used to losing dear friends... but sometimes a loss leaves a particularly large hole in one's life. Otis Grand was a man and artist so much more than the sum of his particular parts and talents. Otis was Lebanese/American and a many faceted person who had his roots in several different cultures. It is our luck and honour that one of them was the Blues. /John Stedman

This album was a long time in the making. And it's worth the wait! Recorded with a stellar band, this set mixes the greatest blues, r&b and jazz sounds from the 1950s and '60s to a rocking unit. Otis Grand loves to play. At spots he sounds like a turbo-powered Freddie King. Excellent. Imagine a mix of Federal style blues instrumentals, augmented by Hammond B-3 sounds from the Prestige label and the cool Blue Note jazz grooves. Grand sounds wild and mean. A beautiful record. Highly recommended to all lovers of great guitar playing. One of my recent favorites. OTIS GRAND - gtrs, JOHNNY HENDERSON - B-3, ANTHONY GERACI - pno/B-3, BRUCE KATZ - pno, MICHAEL 'MUDCAT' WARD - bass, NEIL GOUVIN - drums, KEVIN HAYES - drums, plus horns. ‘He Knows The Blues’ was released to great critical acclaim, Bill Moodie in Juke Blues calling it "absolutely indispensable", and Chris Smith in Blues & Rhythm stating it "is the best contemporary blues recording I’ve heard in a long, long time", and this opinion was not confined to this side of the Atlantic, as it was a W.C. Handy Award nominee for Best Blues Album, ‘SRV / My Mood Too’ was nominated as Best Song and Otis himself was nominated as Best Instrumentalist-Guitar, in their 1993 Awards, while back in his adopted home, Otis swept the board in the British Blues Foundation Awards, winning three categories, Best Blues Guitarist, Best Blues Band and Best Blues Album, and the CD was also Blues & Rhythm’s CD of the month in March, 1993. ‘He Knows The Blues’ had proved to be the catalyst that projected Otis’ explosive talents on to the world stage.

Otis Grand - who is, unquestionably, the biggest star of British Blues and the only UK artist in the genre to have had significant success in America for decades - releases his brand new album" Perfume & Grime " on Sequel Records. This new release was recorded in New Orleans on Feb. 1996 with some of America's top blues musicians, includinging Joe Louis Walker, Curtis Salgado, Luther Allison, and Eddie Bo.

While retaining his signature sound," Perfume & Grime " finds Otis moving forwards to create contemporary blues with the flavours and crosscurrents of Rap, World music, New Orleans Funk, and southern Soul.

"I am very excited about this new album," explains Otis " I have written with the influence of my Blues mentors in mind but also thrown in contemporary attitudes and stylings that I like. PERFUME stands for the beauty and soul Blues. GRIME stands for my hard-hitting and nasty style of guitar playing."

Otis Grand - Blues '65: ...For Listening, Swingin' & Dancing!

Blues.. for Listening, Swingin & Dancing! "Blues '65" is a celebration of the sounds that influenced him during his teenage years. This was an era when recordings of every genre were made to be radio friendly and charts saw Pop, Rock, Soul, R&B, and even Blues nestled comfortably together. There are no guitar pyrotechnics here - just straightforward danceable, Swingin' and listening grooves (Rumba Conga Twist). Otis, truly a master of his instrument in an age of 'guitar heroes', still plays in that authentic Blues style with simplicity, feel, lyricism and rhythmic attack to the fore. 'PRETEN'D was a big hit for Nat King Cole in 1953. It was subsequently a hit for Carl Mann in 1959 on Sun Records, and Alvin Stardust's version was a popular hit in the UK in 1981. According to Babalú Hoodoo, this could be a hit for Otis Grand in 2012. Vocals on this outing are from Otis' long-time friend and collaborator, the massively under-rated and best living bluesman today, Sugar Ray Norcia. Sugar Ray really excels on 'Pretend', 'Bad News Blues On TV', 'Midnight Blues' and on 'Who Will The Next Fool Be'. One track even sees the return from retirement of Otis' long-time touring vocalist, Brother Roy Oakley on the New Orleans soul 'Please Don't Leave'. The mission continues with Blues'65 - roll back the carpet and get ready to get down with this perfect evocation of one of the greatest periods in Blues history. And as BB King once said: "If this ain't it, I quit".

11. Country Girl (6:55)
12. It's A Little Too Late (5:48)
13. The Big Prayer (5:15)

This release, Grand Union, is Grand’s first album since signing with the new Blues label. Recorded in Boston, USA. It is produced by Otis, who is also renowned for his High-value production work on Blues recordings. In Grand Union, Otis Grand has created a powerful guitar recording by inviting his long time friends Anson Funderburgh and Debbie Davies to participate in a TRIOLOGY style CD concept. The album also features the finest musicians from the USA, and includes special guests Sugar Ray Norcia, Tony Coleman and the BB King Horn section, and rare appearance by legendary R&B star Ike Turner on 2 tunes.

Grand Union reflects Otis Grand’s new approach to his latest recording in that he did not want this to be just another Otis Grand release (9 CD’s to date). Since he was invited to participate on the highly acclaimed "Great Guitars" recording by Joe Louis Walker, Otis has been consumed by expanding the project to a totally live guitar recording with his partners in the studio playing together at the same time . "All our playing is first take. It’s got that spontaneous feeling of the moment that is really the magic of playing the blues."

It was planned well in advance. Otis grand began calling musicians and assembling a common ground of songs that all guitarists felt comfortable with. These songs combine a dynamic mixture of Blues, southern soul, rocking R&B and big band influences. Whether Otis is bending, Anson is caressing or Debbie is burning every note from their guitars, the result is an innovative and fresh addition to blues. Grand / Funderburgh / Davies are so good on this release it’s scary, making this another veritable blues guitar ‘ear-gasm’ that will please all audiences across the musical divides.

Guitar Shorty & The Otis Grand Blues Band - My Way Or The Highway

Until he joined forces with British guitarist Otis Grand's band and waxed this very credible comeback set, David "Guitar Shorty" Kearney's legacy was largely limited to a solitary single for Cobra and a handful of great but legendarily obscure followups for Los Angeles-based Pull Records during the late '50s. The acrobatic guitarist informed everyone he was alive and lively with this one, exhibiting his Guitar Slim roots on "Down Thru the Years" and slashing with a vengeance on "No Educated Woman" and the title cut (but shouldn't it have read "or the highway?"). /Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Otis Grand - Nothing Else Matters

12. Common Sense (3:17)
13. Days Of Old (2:43)
14. You Win, I Lose (3:30)
15. Looking Good (2:39)

While British blues guitarist Otis Grand’s albums have received critical acclaim in Europe, somehow they slipped through the cracks in the U.S. market. Originally released in 1994, Nothing Else Matters was reissued in 2003 as part of the Sanctuary Blues Masters series. On this date, Grand pays tribute to guitar hero T-Bone Walker; Grand’s original composition, “5 to 99 Blues,” employs Walker’s famous riffs and he performs sincere covers of “All Night Long” and “Looking Good” from the Magic Sam catalog.

Lending a hand on the disc are Curtis Salgado and Sugar Ray Norcia, who split vocal duties; the House of Blues Horns; and Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, who blows harp and sings on his self-penned track, “Things I Forgot to Do.” Nothing Else Matters is an enjoyable modern blues date that’s not afraid to celebrate vintage influences. /Al Campbell, AllMusic

Spain’s oldest blues band (founded 1989) teams up with cosmopolitan – but long-time UK-based – guitarist Otis Grand and the result is a fine CD that reflects several of the best aspects of the contemporary sound. Otis has been at the forefront of many of the innovations that have resulted in the blues being more popular than ever these days – though conversely he also has a purist outlook that is becoming rarer by the day – and for this release he produces, arranges, contributes incisive and instantly recognisable solos to five of the dozen tracks, and he supplies three of his own numbers.

The approach is relatively traditional, but none the less effective for that; standards are given original and imaginative treatments, the sound is beefed up with some fine horns, vocals may be accented but are perfectly acceptable, and numbers are kept focussed and to the point – and this is, thankfully, blues all the way. There may be nothing too ground-breaking, but this is an album that will satisfy many blues lovers. ~Norman Darwen

Otis Grand had hoped to record with Joe Houston - arguably the first and the last of the bootin' saxmen - for years. Now his dream was realised.

After playing in his native Texas, Texas, Joe was recruited to the Chicago band of King Kolax. He stayed "For about three years; they played the hits of the day, they played the Blues too". After this, he played with Ray Charles and toured with Gatemouth Moore before returning to Texas. In 1952 he moved to California, then a mecca for storming sax-led R&B. There he earned such aliases as Mighty Joe Houston and 'The Wildman Of The Tenor Sax'.

Live work continued, but not recording. This CD was Joe's first in sixteen years. Joe sparked off his sidemen: "Otis is a wonderful person, I enjoyed working with him and ...some wonderful British people and one American on drums - he's a good drummer, really helped the record 100%."

Otis singled out another musician for praise: "Ray Gelato was brilliant".

For Ray Gelato, the session had a special significance; the first sax album he bought was by Joe Houston!

JSP Records was founded on the basic idea of recording blues artists that had fresh ideas, not ones who were simply rehashing their hits from the 1950s and 1960s. John Stedman was interested in hearing new songs and comments on today, not memoirs of long ago pasts. Because of this, JSP has recorded some of the true visionaires of the blues world and also some of its most flamboyant characters. Cats like Champion Jack Dupree, Lefty Dizz, Carey Bell, Guitar Shorty and Louisiana Red all found their way into the JSP recording studios. (Excerpt from the liner notes.)

Joe Houston, a honking R&B saxman of wallpaper-peeling potency, recorded for virtually every major independent R&B label in Los Angeles during the 1950s. When the jump blues tradition faded, he segued right into rock & roll, even cutting budget Twist and surf albums for Crown that didn't sound very different from what he was doing a decade before. Houston played around Houston, Texas with the bands of Amos Milburn and Joe Turner during the late '40s. It was Turner who got the young saxist his first deal with Freedom Records in 1949. Houston found his way to the West Coast in 1952 and commenced recording for labels big and small: Modern, RPM, Lucky, Imperial, Dootone, Recorded in Hollywood, Cash, and Money (as well as the considerably better-financed Mercury, where he scored his only national R&B hit, "Worry, Worry, Worry," in 1952). Houston's formula was simple and savagely direct -- he'd honk and wail as hard as he could, from any conceivable position: on his knees, lying on his back, walking the bar, etc. His output for the Bihari brothers' Crown label (where he was billed as "Wild Man of the Tenor Sax") is positively exhilarating: "All Nite Long," "Blow Joe Blow," and "Joe's Gone" are herculean examples of single-minded sax blasting. Joe Houston remained active musically into the 2000s, emphasizing his blues vocal talent more than previously, until suffering a stroke in 2005. He re-emerged and began playing again for a period of time thereafter, but then retreated from the public and to the company of family and friends. ~Biography by Bill Dahl

This album compiles 13 digitally remastered live recordings from accomplished European blues guitarist Otis Grand. In Grand Style collects 34 tracks from five of bluesman Otis Grand's studio releases. While the British blues guitarist has received critical acclaim in Europe, somehow his talents have only been acknowledged by blues fanatics in the U.S. market. Sanctuary Records is doing its best to correct that situation by releasing this well-packaged, two-disc set. The majority of tracks are Grand originals, bringing a breath of fresh air into a genre that can sometimes get bogged down by relying too heavily on tried and true blues classics. ~ Al Campbell Otis Grand has been voted the best UK Blues guitarist for the past seven years. In 1998 the French Blues Association awarded him the title of Best European Blues Guitarist. Otis has played with all the Blues masters and recorded six award winning studio albums for JSP and Sequel. This is his first live recording and features ten years worth of the finest digitally re - mastered recordings drawn from club, TV and arena shows. Note: The blues guitarist Otis Grand's first CD for Sequel records was recorded in Lyon, France in 1990, but was only on general release in Feb 1992 when the UK's SEQUEL Records picked up on it. "He Knows The Blues" Featuring the support of contemporaries like Otis' old friend Joe Louis Walker, Jimmy 'T99' Nelson, and Pee Wee Ellis (of James Brown fame). Joe Walker swaps guitar solos with Otis Grand on "SRV (My mood Too)" dedicated to the late Stevie Ray Vaughn. 'T99' Nelson shouts some vintage blues on " Jumpin' for Jimmy" and "Swing Turn", recalling the great R&B shouters of the 40's and 50's - Big Joe Turner & Wynonie Harris. Saxman Pee Wee Ellis, a member of the classic James Brown band of the 60's contributes arrangements and the instrumental " Ham".
B.B.King's long time bandleader and trumpet player Calvin Owens tops things off by arranging all the superb horn parts on the CD. More importantly , Otis Grand's superb and tough blues guitar technique and playing is evident through out this set and covers a wide spectrum of blues styles.

Notes: Otis says: "I have never played anything else but blues. I have never attempted to play anything else. I have never listened to anything else but blues, and its derivatives, anything that comes from it. I love western swing, people like Bob Wills, so that's the stuff I listen to. During my days in San Francisco, the big thing in San Francisco was acid rock. People like, for instance, Jefferson Airplane. They were big and you were supposed to drop acid and take drugs and listen to music like that. But I wasn't into that. I was turned on by the guitar of B.B. King, and Albert King in the '60s. They were not popular, but I had this feeling for the blues and I never stopped listening to it. My roots are in the record player. I didn't grow up on a cotton farm or anything like that! I listened and watched my favorites. You had people like B.B. King, Albert King, Buddy Guy, Junior Wells coming across, they were touring, making great records for Delmark and King. I was turned on and I stayed turned on. I'm proud to say that in the last 35 years my love for the blues has never stopped, and in fact it's getting greater and greater. It might seem corny, but I think I'm on a mission to introduce the blues to a lot new people."
