12. Wonderful Time (3:20)

Even though this is the debut release for Quique Gomez, the Spanish-born vocalist/harmonica player is no stranger to fans on both sides of the Atlantic, having worked with several top bluesmen and traveling the world since first visiting Chicago. He delivers a set of Windy City-flavored blues here in an album recorded in his hometown of Madrid but mastered by Kid Andersen at Greaseland Studios in California. Now in his early 40s, Gomez began playing harp at age 18 and migrated to the Windy City for the first time in 2008, quickly establishing himself. He’s toured with a who’s who of talent, including Chicagoans John Primer, Eddie C. Campbell, Jimmy Burns, Taildragger and Rockin’ Johnny Burgin as well as Canadian keyboard player Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne.

Quique’s no stranger to the recording studio, having served as a sideman on about a dozen CDs, and he works frequently with Italian guitarist Luca Giordano, often joining him to back Stateside musicians during European tours. The pair have collaborated on two releases, Dead Mama Blues, recorded in Italy in 2009, and 3011 Studio Sessions, captured in Chicago in 2012. And he paired with Brazilian guitarist Netto Rockefeller on another album, Bahia Times, two years later. He’s an excellent harp player in the Chicago tradition, and possesses a clear, strong baritone voice. He’s joined here by his regular band, The Vipers: Curro Serrano and Pablo Sanpa on guitars, Hector Rojo on bass and Guillaume Destarac on drums with Javier Diaz sitting in on keyboards for three of the 12 cuts, all of which are covers of blues, jazz and soul standards.

An uptempo harp introduction kicks off Roy Brown’s “Good Rockin’ Tonight.” It swings from the jump and gives the guitars plenty of space to rip and run on the mid-tune solo before Quique’s harmonica drives things to the finish. Written by Willie Dixon and recorded famously by Little Walter, “Too Late” is up next with Gomez faithful to the original in the opening bars atop a racing rhythm pattern. A stellar guitar solo makes this one shine, and Quique adds an original solo of his own. He delves into the Gulf Coast next for an updated, uptempo take on Slim Harpo’s “I’m Gonna Keep What I’ve Got” before returning to the Windy City for a strong slow-blues version of Jimmy Rogers’ “Gold Tailed Bird,” on which the guitars come to the fore again with Gomez providing rhythm and fills.

Next up is “Sugar Ray.” Written by Babs Gonzales, the bebop-era jazz vocalist born Lee Brown, and made popular by Dizzy Gillespie, it puts Quique’s chromatic skills on display with sophisticated runs. “Sloppy Drunk,” written by Lucille Bogan, gets a faithful treatment before a take on Jimmy Witherspoon’s “Times Getting Tougher Than Tough,” which would leave the ’50s superstar smiling. Marvin Gaye’s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” gets a full-on blues overhaul next. The musicianship will make you forget that Gomez’s Spanish accent slightly creeps into the vocals on both numbers. “It’s Too Late Brother,” written by Al Duncan, one of the most important, yet overlooked, sessions drummers in the golden era of Chicago blues, follows before takes on Muddy Waters’ “Honey Bee,” Memphis Minnie’s “What’s The Matter With The Mill” and Sonny Boy Williamson I’s “Wonderful Time” bring the action to a close.

Italian guitarist Luca Giordano and Spanish harmonica player Quique Gomez both loved Chicago blues and decided to travel there to immerse themselves in Chicago blues. Coincidentally, the two Europeans were there at the same time, met each other and decided to do something together. In the meantime they just kept busy with their own band and career, but every now and then they went out together. After doing this for a year or two and also making some friends in Chicago, two years ago they entered the studio with some of those friends and the album "Chicago '3011 Studios' Sessions" was recorded. Those friends are not the least. In addition to the accompanists Ariyo (piano), Harlan Terson (bass) and Marty Binder (drums), bassist Bob Stroger, guitarists Jimmy Burns, Eddie C. Campbell, Breezy Rodio, Pete Galanis and harmonica player Billy Branch. The album consists of six original compositions, six adaptations of classics and a jam as a bonus. What we are presented with here is excellent Chicago blues, made by enthusiasts. That should be obvious. There is nothing new under the sun; it's just good-sounding old-fashioned Chicago blues. The six covers are performed well, of which “Outskirts Of Town” is an outlier for me, but their own work stands head and shoulders above that. A special mention deserves “The Fool” and “Three Wheels Automobile”. A fruitful cooperation between Spain and Italy on American soil. Every blues fan should listen to this.

Young guitarist, who has worked hard for his merits in the blues clubs of Chicago. On his second album for Delmark he pulls out all of his prowess. He cultivates an individual style and convinces by his playing technique, originality and a dose of unusual notions. His band sounds laid-back and far from the stereotype of a Chicago blues combo.
Guests include guitarists Monster Mike Welch and Kid Andersen and harpists Simone Nobile and Quique Goemz as well as a powerful horn section.

Together and separately they have ridden many a dusty trail with some of the last of the great Chicago bluesmen. Today they are the feared gunslingers of the international blues scene In the winter of 2018 they partnered up, galloped through the Western Territories, and took dead aim on twelve originals and two blues classics.

Rockin' Johnny Burgin and Quiqué Gomezare both internationally acclaimed as world class bluesmen Burgin has a storied history on Chicago's Delmark Records, and Gomez is a versatile jazz-influenced blues singer who also sings Frank Sinatra songs with a Spanish Big Band. Willie Buck was born in 1937 in the small town of Houston, Mississippi. When he was a boy, Willie spent most of his time working at a local paper mill making $5 during the day and honing his voice by night. He began his craft singing in the most popular form of the day, "Rock & Roll." In spite of his vigor for the newly developing art form, his passions began to lean towards the more traditional sound of the delta... Blues. Believe you me, it didn't take him long to develop his sound. While still in "Da South," Willie performed on what became known as the "Chittlin Circuit" bouncin' between Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, North & South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Shortly after developing a reputation, Willie did like a lot of Southerners during that time by migrating to Chicago in 1954.
Once here, he truly immersed himself in the Chicago Blues scene. He became a real force in the "Maxwell Street" blues Legacy which boasts of the raw blues talent that it has produced. It was also here that he made his first recording titled "The Disco Blues". This also marked the beginning of his overseas travel to Canada, Mexico, France and Amsterdam. Willie was recently inducted in the Blues Hall of Fame among many of his fellow performers here in Chicago in the summer of 2004. Soon after, he released his latest CD, "I Wanna Be Loved" in early 2005. As the blues scene has declined here in the states, Willie has seen a resurgence... more like a movement in blues overseas. His music is profoundly affecting young and old alike in Europe. "I'm glad to see the newfound appreciation of my music in Europe. I'll be heading back there real soon!" he said. His sound is one that only gets better with age. He's hoping you grow to appreciate the blues too.
