David Gogo - Christmas With The Blues

Size: 74.5 MB
Time: 31:47
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2012
Styles: Electric Blues, Xmas
Art: Full

01. Christmas Blues (2:43)

07. Merry Christmas Baby (4:10)
08. Little Drummer Boy (3:56)
09. Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin' (3:56)

One of the few things that can make the holidays even better is not just Christmas music, but bluesy Christmas music. Luckily, David Gogo has you covered this holiday season as he’s recently released a Yuletide-themed 9-song album, Christmas With the Blues.

Gogo celebrates this particular December with a range of holiday songs, some well-known and others not so much. 5 of them have the word Christmas in the title, 2 name “Santa Claus” directly, and he even includes the ever-favorite “Little Drummer Boy.”

The music feels familiar, but still has a special cozy quality that makes it an ideal choice to celebrate with, away from the cold and closer to where the warmth of Christmas is already glowing.

Gogo tries to inject some additional fun by keeping things light, as with the humorous “Let’s Get a Real Tree,” which tells the tale of Christmas with a hippie girlfriend. Gogo’s aim seems to be to mostly steer from conventional Christmas musical themes, which can feel a bit strange at times (such as the particularly cheeky song “Santa Claus Wants Some Lovin’).

The album is a worthy holiday romp though, and Gogo can be commended for bringing together two things very close to America’s heart: Christmas and the blues. At times it might not be a perfect bulls-eye, but as we’re told with the Christmas season, it’s the thought that counts.

In the end, Christmas with the Blues is a worthwhile album, and if you love blues and want a friendly reminder of the reason for the season, it’s more than recommended. After all, what’s not to like about any Christmas with the Blues? The Review: 7.5/10 ~Tyler Quiring

I am very excited about the release of my new album, Silver Cup. These have been difficult times for all of us, and the music industry in particular has taken a severe beating. Despite the uncertainties, I felt that the one thing that I could focus on was to stay creative. Having spent my adult life playing on the road, I took the lockdown as an opportunity to woodshed and get back to the roots of what made me the artist that I am today. I was listening to my vinyl albums, going down rabbit holes on the internet, reading biographies of musicians, and playing my many guitars and just feeling the energy of so much great music.

At first I was just writing without any blinders on. I wasn’t sure what would be next for me, but that was OK. Eventually I realized that it was time for a rootsy, down home recording that I could tour solo, as a duo, or with the band. Whatever the situation called for. The idea of recording at home with all my beautiful instruments really appealed to me.

I got in touch with my friend Steve Marriner, who I felt was the best person for this project. His skills as a musician are well known, but during the lockdown he had been honing his recording and engineering skills, which was perfect. We got to work right away and had a wonderful time creating this album.

The songs come from different aspects of my life. The title track was inspired by an antique silver cup that was handed down to me after my 95 year old grandmother passed away. It had originally belonged to James McKay, a Métis builder of Canada and my great, great, great uncle. I researched his amazing life and had to celebrate him in song! Top Shelf is inspired by a fellow musician who I crossed paths with many times over the decades. His final wish was that we celebrate his life by only drinking the best stuff from the top shelf. I raise my glass!!

Of course, there is a lot of blues to fill your shoes. Steve and I had fun getting the sounds we were looking for out of the vintage acoustic instruments on hand, and we even wrote a couple of songs together.

I can’t wait for things to get back to normal so I can hit the road with these new songs. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as we enjoyed making it! ~David Gogo

Myles Goodwyn has been busy: celebrating the 50th Anniversary of his band April Wine at the Ex in August, an appearance with his blues band at the Southside Shuffle and now with the release of his second blues album. Friends of the Blues 2 does carry on from the first volume in format with a star-filled list of Friends but has even better songs than that JUNO-nominated album. Most of the songs feature Russ Billard on keys, JR Smith on drums and Bruce Dixon on bass. They supply excellent support for Goodwyn and his cast of Friends. Special mention should be made of Reeny Smith and Lisa MacDougall as these two wonderful singers supply background vocals on many of the songs. The opener is a rocking delight: in “Hip Hip”, Goodwyn recalls his introduction to the blues travelling through the states as a young man, name checking Buddy Guy and with an absolutely superb piano part played by Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne. A creative arrangement graces the Womack’s “All Over Now”, making it rather different from the Stones’ version you might remember. This one has a solid harp solo from Mike “Shrimp Daddy” Reid who hasn’t been heard from much since his move to the east. “You Got it Bad” channels Sonny and Brownie in a well-sung leaving song featuring Matt Andersen on acoustic guitar and Dewey Reeds on harmonica. “Fish Tank Blues” is built on an especially raunchy slide guitar part by Halifax guitarist Will Van Hansolo but little else. “Daddy Needs New Shoes” is a great little rocker featuring Jack Semple on guitar and John Campbelljohn on slide – Daddy is sending the wife out to work. “Being Good” starts with a slow introduction by Angel Forrest before the band kicks in with Goodwyn’s verse. Angel returns and Martin Davidson gets a nice sax solo – a marvelous duet performance. “I Love my Guitar” is exactly what it says: no guests, just Goodwyn celebrating and playing. His romping “Help Me Baby”, is a jump blues that features Joe Murphy on harp and Bill Stevenson on piano, Montreal’s Steve Segal solos on electric guitar. The acoustic “When Your Ship Came In (I Was at the Airport Drinking) features Jack de Keyzer on bottleneck and Sherman Doucette on harmonica – our narrator has a problem. “I Saw Someone That Wasn’t There (And it Was You)” has David Gogo as the featured lead guitarist – his partner is long gone but not for him. Goodwyn’s Friends all contribute to making topflight albums for you to listen to at home but the fine players from the Maritimes he brings with him for live shows are special too. ~John's Blues Picks

Since bursting onto the Canadian music scene with his 1994 self-titled album, 6-time Juno Award Nominee and a 3-time recipient of ‘Guitarist of The Year’ at the Maple Blues Awards, David Gogo has racked up a long list of accolades and accomplishments over his illustrious career.

David Gogo has made a name for himself as an incredibly skilled and dynamic performer, effortlessly ripping up the stage as a lead guitarist. However, over the last decade he has built a solid reputation with his acoustic performances as well. His solo shows not only display his diversity as a guitarist but also as a performer, sharing entertaining stories from the road between his songs.

Usually he opts to keep these two sides of his abilities separate, but after listening to The White Album by The Beatles, he chose to accentuate both in his new album. “In the past, I was afraid that if I mixed my acoustic songs with my more rocking material it would confuse people. I don’t think I was giving people enough credit, as I was listening to The White Album by The Beatles recently and thought ‘Well, the diversity shown on this collection didn’t seem to hurt!’”

’17 Vultures’ features five original songs by David Gogo and a selection of cover songs from a diverse cross section of musicians, including: The Beatles, Barbecue Bob, Doug And The Slugs and Bob Dylan, showing off his flexibility as an artist. The original tracks in the album are some of the strongest in Gogo’s career.

It’s backed by a core rhythm section of Pat Steward on drums (Bryan Adams, The Odds, Colin James, Jimmy Barnes) and Ben Dwyer (the son of jazz legend Phil Dwyer) on electric and upright bass. The albums collection of songs range from traditional blues to heavy contemporary influences.

As a six-time Juno Award Nominee and a three-time recipient of ‘Guitarist of The Year’ at the Maple Blues Awards, David Gogo is highly regarded as an artist in the forefront of Canadian Blues. Gogo’s accreditations further extend to accolades such as ‘Musician of The Year’ at the West Coast Music Awards, ‘Blues Recording of the Year’ at the Western Canadian Music Awards; and The Great Canadian Blues award, which was voted by listeners of CBC’s “Saturday Night Blues” to acknowledge his lifetime contribution to Blues in Canada.

For his 10th album, Different Views, blues rocker David Gogo definitely had some unique sights to inspire him during the recording process. Instead of the usual confines of your typical recording studio, the bulk of the album was recorded at his home - overlooking the 160-acre Christmas tree farm and forest that make up the Gogo family compound. The keyboard tracks were recorded at Rick Hopkins’ (Colin James, Barney Bentall) home overlooking breath-taking Lions Bay, British Columbia.

The album is produced by Russell Broom (Jann Arden, Sam Roberts, The Dudes, Wil) with guests Shaun Verrault (Wide Mouth Mason), roots diva Carolyn Mark, and jazz great Phil Dwyer popping in at various times. With the drums set up in the foyer and guitar amps in the laundry room, the Gogo house was filled with music and good food. At times, Gogo wasn’t sure if he was a musician or a caterer! The fact that the clock wasn’t ticking, along with Gogo’s vast collection of vinyl albums, vintage guitars and pop culture memorabilia at their fingertips encouraged a stimulating creative environment. This combination has added variety and spice unlike previous Gogo efforts without losing focus of what he’s all about.

10. Why (5:27)

For over two decades David Gogo has been recording and performing all over the world, bringing his magnetic and accessible groove-fueled blend of blues and rock to audiences of all ages. The British Columbia based guitarist and vocalist's name has become synonymous with the Canadian blues scene, and with good reason. Vicksburg Call (September 4) is Gogo’s 14th release and is poised to add even more acclaim to an already impressive inventory. He’s earned numerous accolades, including five JUNO nominations and multiple Maple Blues Awards. He has thousands of tour miles under his belt and has played on stage with B.B. King, Johnny Winter, Bo Diddley and Otis Rush as well as opened for ZZ Top, Buddy Guy, Charles Bradley and many others.

Undoubtedly a rockin’ blues album, Vicksburg Call was recorded in a studio with a live, intimate atmosphere, which yielded an overall grittier sound with lots of feeling. "I wanted this album to have more of a “band” feel to it, rather than just going into the studio and basically dictating the parts to the musicians", says Gogo. "I also wanted as many songs as possible to have a very live feel and be easily transferrable to the stage."

With the help of his backing band consisting of Bill Hicks on drums and Jay Stevens on bass, each of the tracks on Vicksburg Call are replete with the grooves, emotion and soulful delivery that David Gogo is known for. From the opening rocker “Cuts Me To The Bone”, the bluesy “Fooling Myself”, featuring Kim Simmonds and the haunting “There’s A Hole” with a guest appearance from Shawn Hall of The Harpoonist & The Axe Murderer. Vicksburg Call also highlights Gogo’s aptitude for selecting cover songs that one would not expect to hear on a blues album including Neil Young’s “The Loner”, Stephen Stills’ “Jet Set (Sigh)”, and Annie Lennox’s “Why”.

“In the time that has passed since the last album, there has been a lot of loss in my life with the passing of friends and colleagues in the world of music. There were many sad days, but also tears of joy when I think back at fond memories from my time on the road”, Gogo recalls. “Relationships can also have their ups and downs as the years pass by, and many of my new songs deal with this. I tried to write from many viewpoints of love and loss, reconciliation, regret, acceptance and hope for new horizons.”

Gogo’s passion for blues and his extraordinary, virtuosic guitar talents are laid bare alongside his emotions on this album - a combination that grabs you from the opening bars and keeps you hooked through all 10 tracks.
