The best contemporary Shaw offering, cut in his old Mississippi stomping grounds with his trusty combo, the Wolf Gang. Lots of lyrically unusual originals -- "Dunkin' Donut Woman," "Wine Head Hole," and "She Didn't Tell Me Everything," for starters -- and Shaw's usual diamond-hard horn lines and commanding vocals make this a standout selection. ~Review by Bill Dahl

When it comes to blues, Chicago's strictly a guitar and harmonica town. Saxophonists who make a living leading a blues band in the Windy City are scarce as hen's teeth. But Eddie Shaw has done precisely that ever since his longtime boss, Howlin' Wolf, died in 1976.

The powerfully constructed tenor saxist has rubbed elbows with an amazing array of luminaries over his 50-plus years in the business. By the time he was age 14, Shaw was jamming with Ike Turner's combo around Greenville, MS. At a gig in Itta Bena where Shaw sat in, Muddy Waters extended the young saxman an invitation he couldn't refuse: a steady job with Waters's unparalleled band in Chicago. After a few years, Shaw switched his onstage allegiance to Waters's chief rival, the ferocious Howlin' Wolf, staying with him until the very end and eventually graduating to a featured role as Wolf's bandleader.

Eddie Shaw also shared a West side bandstand or two along the way with Freddy King, Otis Rush, and Magic Sam. The saxist did a 1966 session with Sam that produced his first single, the down-in-the-alley instrumental "Blues for the West Side" (available on Delmark's Sweet Home Chicago anthology). Shaw also blew his heart out on Sam's 1968 Delmark encore LP, Black Magic.

Shaw's own recording career finally took off during the late '70s, with a standout appearance on Alligator's Living Chicago Blues anthologies in 1978, his own LPs for Simmons and Rooster Blues, and fine recent discs for Rooster Blues (In the Land of the Crossroads) and Austrian Wolf (Home Alone). Eddie Shaw, who once operated the hallowed 1815 Club on West Roosevelt Road (one of Wolf's favorite haunts), has sired a couple of high-profile sons: diminutive Eddie Jr., known as Vaan, plays lead guitar with Eddie's Wolf Gang and has cut a pair of his own albums for Wolf, while husky Stan Shaw is a prolific character. ~Biography by Bill Dahl

Peps Persson was probably the most important artist in introducing blues to Sweden in the late '60s and early '70s. Since then he has had a reputation of being mainly a blues artist, but his discography shows a much wider range, including Afro-pop, reggae, R&B, and folk. Peps Persson is most easily recognized by his full and trembling voice, and his extreme deep south (Swedish) dialect that gives him a wide selection of words and rhymes. In a peculiar way it also helps him to adapt Swedish to blues music, a thing not many have mastered.

In 1966, Peps Persson formed the group Downbeat Crowd and released a cover of Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Working" as a single. The first LP, Blues Connection, was released 1968 on Gazell and the name of the band was now Linkin' Louisiana Peps. The coming few records were released on Sonet, a label he would keep to for most of his career, and followed a traditional blues and R&B formula. The Week Peps Came to Chicago was recorded in Chicago 1972 with Sunnyland Slim and Jimmy Dawkins and in 1973 he formed Peps Blodsband. This was to be his longest lasting group and consisted of organist and percussionist Brynn Settels, bassist Rolf Alm, and drummer Bosse Skoglund, with many musicians added on the various albums. His last pure blues album in a longtime was Blues På Svenska, recorded in 1975 together with pianist Slim Notini and containing translated blues standards. The main influences the coming years were instead to be Afro-pop and reggae, and blended with R&B and blues it made up a very personal sound. This formula was tried already the same year on Hög Standard, Peps Persson's most well-known album and one that contained highly political lyrics about low wages and solidarity with liberation fronts. Such a social conscience was to show on many of his recordings, but nevertheless he was never fully accepted by the hardcore ideologists of the political 1970s, who accused him of being too commercial. The exploration of reggae continued with Peps Blodsband and other constellations on records like Droppen Urholkar Stenen and Spår, and some excursions into Swedish folk music was made on Fyra Tunnland Bedor Om Dan and Persson Sjonger Persson, where he covered classic Swedish comedy actor and singer Edward Persson. During the '80s, Peps Perssons political messages were seen as old fashioned and that helped to marginalize him. Most of the century he held a low profile, with an exception for the rock-reggae hit "Lived Po Lanned," originally "Give Me the Country" by Robert Parker. While playing blues gigs, he stayed out of the blues revival of the late '80s and early '90s and the albums instead showed an increasing influence from Afro-pop. In 1997 Peps Persson finally returned to his blues roots on the album Rotblos, which again contained blues standards translated into Swedish, a difficult task, but one that was awarded both with critical acclaim and commercial success. In playing blues Peps Persson gets to show that except for being a soulful and good singer, he is a skilled guitarist and a brilliant harmonica player, a fact that is often overlooked.

This set, recorded at Chess Record's Ter-Mar complex in Chicago, pairs Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac with some of the Windy City's blues legends including Willie Dixon, Otis Spann, Buddy Guy, and David "Honeyboy" Edwards. Put together on short notice, and recorded in one day, the sessions have something of a ramshackle feel, but the energy of the performances transcends any shortcomings on this date. Dixon oversaw the proceedings, and can be heard during the between-song banter giving directions and chastising Walter "Shakey" Horton for missing his cues. Since the Peter Green-led Fleetwood Mac was so directly influenced by Chicago blues, the session acts as a kind of stylistic homecoming for the band. Bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood contribute driving rhythms while guitarists Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer lend both rhythms and the occasional lead. Green's stunningly fluid guitar work is at the fore, as usual. But the real treat is picking out the Chess players--Otis Spann's piano on "I Got the Blues," J.T. Brown's tenor sax on Elmore James's "I Can't Hold Out," or Guy and Edwards, who go toe-to-toe with Green on "Red Hot Jam," one of the session's indisputable highlights.

Jeremy Spencer (vocals, guitar, slide guitar); Danny Kirwan, Peter Green (vocals, guitar); John McVie (bass guitar); Mick Fleetwood (drums); Otis Spann (vocals, piano); David Honeyboy Edwards, Buddy Guy (guitar); Big Walter Horton (harmonica); J.T. Brown (tenor saxophone); Willie Dixon (acoustic bass guitar); S.P. Leary (drums).

Like Volume 1, BLUES JAM IN CHICAGO Volume 2 documents collaborations between some of Chess Records' most prominent bluesmen and the late-1960s version of Fleetwood Mac (the blues-rock power outfit, as opposed to the commercially successful soft-rock incarnation from the '70s). Given that the Peter Green-led Fleetwood Mac was already deeply rooted in Chicago blues, the project proved to be a natural for the group, with Green's blues-drenched leads and the chops of Mick Fleetwood (drums), John McVie (bass), Danny Kirwan and Jeremy Spencer (guitars) providing a perfect framework for contributions by Willie Dixon, Otis Spann, and David "Honeyboy" Edwards, among others. Green and company bring an edge to the proceedings, playing with the kind of muscle and unbridled energy associated with rock music. Interestingly, Volume 2 has greater variety in the lineup than Volume 1, with Dixon substituting on bass for McVie on a number of tracks, along with much swapping of vocal duties. This last fact gives the second installment the edge over the first, with Edwards singing on his own tunes ("Honey Boy Blues" is a highlight), and the inimitable Spann singing "Someday Soon Baby" and "Hungry Country Girl." This is one of the finer snapshots of British blues-rock meeting its source.

Jeremy Spencer (vocals, guitar, slide guitar); Danny Kirwan, Peter Green (vocals, guitar); John McVie (bass guitar); Mick Fleetwood (drums); Otis Spann (vocals, piano); David Honeyboy Edwards, Buddy Guy (guitar); Big Walter Horton (harmonica); J.T. Brown (tenor saxophone); Willie Dixon (acoustic bass guitar); S.P. Leary (drums).

It’s not every day that I receive an album for review from Brazil, and I was pleased to hear about the Delira Musica label that has been promoting high quality independent music from that country since 2003. Formed to specialize in classical and jazz instrumental repertoires, the label expanded in 2007 to include blues and other genres. My first introduction to Delira Musica comes with the solo album debut of “Gaucho” guitarist Christiano Crochemore’s Play it Again. The term “Gaucho” refers to a person born in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Since 1986, the blues guitarist and singer has been based in Rio de Janeiro.

Cristiano Crochemore started playing blues during his high school days, and by the 1990s was playing alongside legendary guitarist Bebeco Garcia, founder of “Garotos da Rua” (a pioneer rock & roll band from the south of Brazil). Today, Crochemore evocatively bleeds considerable emotion from his Fender Stratocaster 72, at the same time creating plenty of feeling with his passionate vocals. Others on the album include Otavio Rocha (guitar, slide guitar), Helio Ratis (drums), and Luciano Mendes (bass). Special guests are Beto Werther (backing vocals), Humberto Barros (keyboards on the cover of Little Milton’s “Losing Hand”) and Pedro Garcia (percussion on “Make it Wit Chu”).

Cristiano Crochemore gives us two orignals, “Play It Again” and “Why Don’t You?” Both demonstrate the bluesman’s own personification of his rootsy, laidback influences. For example, the blueprint of Cristiano’s music shows his great respect for such players as J.J. Cale (“Trouble in the City”), John Mayall (“Medicine Man”), Steve Winwood (“Can’t Find My Way Home”), and John Lee Hooker (“No Shoes”). The introspective, relaxed, and warmly conversational approach to blues-rock makes for an impressive debut. In fact, to capture more of a vintage sound, “Play it Again” was recorded mostly live to eight tracks with a minimum of overdubs. That kept a strong emphasis on the feeling and vibrancy of the songs. At the same time, I’d be curious to hear Crochemore’s future album releases even more highly arranged with the likes of a horn section, keyboards, and strong female backup vocals on some cuts.

With the able production assistance of Otavio Rocha (Blues Etílicos Band), Play It Again emerges as a splendid introduction to this Brazilian guitarist and singer. I also note his strong closing tribute to the gritty Chicago blues styling of Willie Dixon with two lesser-known covers, “If the Sea was Whiskey” and “Cool Kind Woman Blues.” Much like Dixon, it’s clear to me that Cristiano Crochemore is also a poet of the blues. ~Review Joe Ross

Back in 1998, the New Orleans Musicians Clinic (NOMC) was formed to provide much-needed healthcare to the city's many musicians and their families. The clinic was the first such health initiative in the United States, and has served as an invaluable blueprint for other cities. The clinic is part of the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation (NOMAF), which provides social and occupational assistance to over 1,800 struggling musicians in the Crescent City.

Shortly after the opening of the NOMC, the organization released the original Get You A Healin' CD, a twelve-track collection of New Orleans styled blues, jazz, and R&B that featured artists like Art Neville, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, and Coco Robicheaux, among others. All the musicians donated their time and songs to this benefit album, which was intended to raise awareness of musician's health issues and maybe make a little much-needed cash for the clinic.

Flash forward a decade or so, and the ravages of Hurricane Katrina and its lengthy aftermath have wreaked havoc on New Orleans' musical heritage. With federal funding cuts and dwindling contributions due to the economy, the New Orleans Musicians Clinic is going back to the well one more time with an anniversary reissue of Get You A Healin'. The digital-only release will be available on iTunes, Amazon, and other retailers on August 24, 2010 and money raised from the sales of the digital album and individual tracks will be used to further the clinic's efforts.

For this anniversary reissue, the original twelve tracks on Get You A Healin' have been expanded by another ten new songs, the expanded album featuring the talents of the aforementioned artists as well as folks like guitarist Richard Thompson, Sonia Dada, the subdudes, Bonerama, Christine Ohlman (of the Saturday Night Band), and the great B.B. King, among others. ~By Reverend Keith A. Gordon

Rowdy barrelhouse pianist Aaron Moore is carrying on in the effervescent style of such pioneering piano pounders as Roosevelt Sykes and Memphis Slim. On his debut as a leader, Hello World, the longtime sideman to such Chicago blues heavyweights as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Hound Dog Taylor offers up infectious shuffles, slow blues and boogie woogies in a straightforward, no-frills manner. Guitarist James Wheeler provides some crisp, tasty accompaniment throughout and is backed by the bare-bones rhythm section of drummer Robert 'Huckleberry Hound' Wright and bassist Willie Black. There's a sameness to the program here but blues fans who appreciate authentic Chicago-by-way-of-Mississippi piano playing would be well advised to pick up on this rootsy disc.

Thanks to Marc.

At 71, blues pianist/singer Moore is only up to his second CD, but it's a very good one. He's definitely reminiscent of his main influence, Roosevelt Sykes, just not as bawdy. Traces of Jay McShann also creep in here and there. Moore wrote all 17 of these tracks, but you've heard them all under the guise of more familiar blues standards. The backup band is solid: guitarist James Wheeler is an expert at economical, sweet, tasty solos and fills, Bob Stroger knows the right basslines to lay down, and drummer Wilie "Big Eyes" Smith is a legend. When Moore gets on a roll, he stays there, as the majority of his tunes are easy shuffles with New Orleans flourishes. "I Want My Baby Back" is a lighter boogie with sexual overtones, "Hind Part Boogie" is much heavier and Sykes-like, "You Look so Good to Me" is in more of a Jimmy Reed style, while the title track is a jump-n-shout fire breather and "Faithful Love," with just Moore playing and singing, is similar to "Sunny Side of the Street." Not much soloing here, but there are traces of the influence of Count Basie, Teddy Wilson, and Earl Hines that come across in a compact approach that has no need for grandstanding. Slower ballads and shuffles such as the 12-bar "My Love Is Out of Control" and "Made a Change in Your Love" show Moore's tender side, but then he cranks it back up with "Real Throw Down," a down-home blues perfect for your next party. Moore's style is getting to be a lost art, and while a bit more diversity could make this fine pianist a true blues star, there's absolutely nothing wrong with what he's doing here. Recommended. ~Review by Michael G. Nastos

Fans of hard-core rockabilly music have long associated it’s origins with the fertile breeding grounds of Memphis, Tennessee , the great state of Texas and somehow Norfolk ,Virginia..(Gene Vincent!) There is one piece missing in this puzzle . This was brought to the attention of New Orleans recording artist
Johnny J .When asked ,during a casual conversation ,”Jerry Lee Lewis is from Louisiana?” “By the way”’ he answered, “so are Dale Hawkins, Joe Clay, Al Ferrier, Johnny Jano , Roy Brown (enthusiastically covered by old swivel-hips himself- Elvis)” …and a mess more! The direct result was the recording of “Louisiana Rockabilly” - produced by one of the aforementioned legends, Dale “Susie Q” Hawkins.
To complete your take on the origins of the sacred sound, - Ya gotta have this one!!

We grew up in Chicago with a strong dose of blues, but our influences are many, so we inject a lot of southern rock, soul, and funk feels to our heavily blues laden sound. Looking extensively into the colorful history of the blues, we were delighted to find that the fiddle was a large part of the Delta sound before blues was electrified in the urban settings. So we put the fiddle back in the blues, electrified it, infused it some more with high energy harp, searing guitar, boogie bustin' keyboards, laid down a heavy backbeat, and produced a rockin' blues sound like no other. The interaction between the harp, fiddle, guitar and keyboards gives us a uniquely individual sound that is unrivaled in the blues/rock idiom. If you are a fan of blues/rock, you will dig our what we are offering...

Simplicidade e autenticidade.

Review by Mark Deming:
Arthur Alexander had been forgotten by nearly everyone short of hardcore fans of Southern soul when he was lured away from his day job as a school bus driver in Cleveland to cut a new album as part of Elektra Records' American Explorer series, and 1993's Lonely Just Like Me was a potent reminder of Alexander's estimable gifts as a vocalist and a songwriter. However, Alexander died of a heart attack at the age of 51 just weeks after the album was released, and while the story of his short-lived comeback brought him back to the attention of music fans (and prompted long-overdue reissues of his classic sides of the '60s and '70s), the album that brought him back to the spotlight didn't fare so well. With no artist to promote the album, Lonely Just Like Me promptly disappeared, and Alexander's valedictory effort seemed doomed to obscurity. However, the collectors at Hacktone Records have given his final recordings a second chance in the marketplace, and Lonely Just Like Me: The Final Chapter is a splendid expansion of what was already a wonderful album. This disc includes the dozen songs from the album in remastered and resequenced form (the new running order is meant to conform more closely to the original intentions of Alexander and producer Ben Vaughn), as well as an appearance by Alexander on NPR's Fresh Air, four songs recorded in a Cleveland hotel room while Alexander and Vaughn were working out material for the recording sessions, and Alexander singing his 1962 hit "Anna" at New York City's Bottom Line in 1991 (this was the performance that prompted Elektra Records to give him a new record deal). While it might sound as if Hacktone has cluttered this disc with odds and ends, what's startling is how committed and compelling Alexander sounds regardless of the circumstances, whether he's singing an old Neil Diamond tune into a cassette machine or recording superb new compositions for his major-label comeback. There's a heartbreaking emotional honesty in his best songs, and he sang them with a voice that melded churchy grace with gritty home truths, and even though he'd been away from professional music making for close to a decade and a half when he cut this music, it's as moving and timeless as anything he ever recorded. Songs as good as "In the Middle of It All," "If It's Really Got to Be This Way" and "All the Time" only come around once in a lifetime, and thankfully, Alexander was given one last chance to share them with Lonely Just Like Me; this new edition only improves an overlooked classic anyone with an ear for vintage R&B will cherish.

Thanks to Marc.

Billy GIBSON - In A Memphis Tone / The Billy Gibson Band

Billy Gibson first picked up the harmonica at a very young age. “It was cheap and I could easily make sounds with it.” After high school, Gibson’s desire for learning and improving as a musician took him to Clarksdale, Mississippi, where he played with blues guitarist Johnnie Billington and drummer Bobby Little in Billington’s group The Midnighters. “Johnnie and Bobby taught me how to make it in this business,” Gibson recalls. Like many before him, Gibson eventually left Mississippi for Memphis. “Beale Street was my university of blues,” recalls Gibson, referring to the lessons learned as a Beale Street performer. “For a young musician, all you have to do is look and listen and you can learn so much.”
Gibson’s talent and commitment have not gone unrecognized. He received an endorsement from Hohner, his harmonica of choice in 1999. He has made guest appearances on national recording artists’ CDs including Deborah Coleman’s Soft Place To Fall (Blind Pig 2000) and Michael Burks’ I Smell Smoke (Alligator 2003). Around the same time, Gibson received a BA in music from the University of Memphis.
Gibson’s career has been a constant progression and immersion into many genres of music, with blues being the foundation and primary inspiration of his artistic endeavors.

Note: As anyone who has heard him on Beale Street already knows, Billy Gibson's harp playing is extraordinary. Seeing him live is an experience not to forget--he is simply electrifying. On this new studio recording, the chemistry of these ace musicians is in perfect harmony. Although his harp playing is no less than ferocious, every guitar lick, every drum fill, and every organ nuance has its place on these nine songs. "A certified genius," Bill Ellis of The Memphis Commercial Appeal comments regarding Gibson's virtuosity. For fans who have followed his career since his days in junkyardmen, The Billy Gibson Band CD will be comfortably familiar. For fans not familiar with Gibson, GET this one!

Notes: Billy Gibson is an amazing harmonica player. In a club setting, he ignites both the band and his audience with explosive solos and individual charisma. In a studio setting, he s the one who gets a call from producers when a track needs some magic. Simply put, Billy Gibson is an extraordinary musician. Born in Clinton, Mississippi, Billy first picked-up the harmonica at a very young age. After high school, he spent some time in Clarksdale, where he honed his musical skill and immersed himself in the blues culture. In his early 20s, he moved to Memphis and quickly became recognized as one of Beale Street s most dynamic new performers. During this period, he also became acquainted with some legendary Memphis jazz musicians and began studying jazz harmonica with renowned virtuoso Pete Pedersen. Now one of Memphis most popular entertainers and twice the recipient of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Premier Player Award for outstanding harmonica, Billy Gibson is a mature musician who is getting more than just a little notice.

His recent guest appearances on Michael Burks I Smell Smoke along with various television appearances are adding up to nothing less than a serious buzz. His recording credits include two CDs with the popular Beale Street band Junkyardmen (1998 and 1999), a self-titled solo release in 1996, and the 2001 jazz release 'The Nearness of You'. He was also guest artist and co-producer on two other releases that year Goin Down South Blues Sampler and the McCarty-Hite Project s Weekend in Memphis. In a Memphis Tone was mostly recorded in 1997 and captures Billy Gibson as an artist with enormous talent and renewed inspiration. The sessions include his mentor Pete Pedersen on one track, and B-3 organ virtuoso Charlie Wood and bassist Kevin Sheahan on most others. An instrumental CD with elements of blues and jazz, 'In a Memphis Tone' captures a moment in time where a heightened sense of artistry is achieved and pure pleasure awaits the listener. This is all instrumental music, mostly jazzy blues.

The title track from the album 'Keep On Rollin' was used in a major media campaign for train travel throughout the state of Utah in the US in 2009 with two tracks being added to an independent film due out in 2012. Castlemaine Sessions released in 2009 features the crowd pleasers 'Why Me', and E minor spanglish twister 'No Tengo Dinero'.

With Paul Holmberg on drums and backing vocals, guitarist Mark Buhmann, Scott Dymock on bass, and Brad Palmer on lead vocals, blues harp and guitar, the band play through the Castlemaine swamp, on the beach at Johanna and on the Warrego Highway with tales of travel, trouble, fast cars and faster women.

Unsurprisingly, Little Freddie King pays homage to his idol Freddie king throughout Swamp Boogie. Little Freddie King hasn't recorded an album since the mid-'70s, but Swamp Boogie illustrates that he didn't spend the ensuing two decades just sitting around. While he doesn't stray far from the original Freddie King blueprint, he does play with grace and a bit of personality. The album isn't necessarily energetic, but it has its moments, even if during those moments you wish that he would let loose just a little bit more. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Formed by Haroldo Mattos (guitar ) , Gustavo Vasconcellos (drums ) , Peter Martin ( bass) and Mario Salimon (voice ) , the Another is a group that proves the value of live music , hot , improvised and grounded in the opportunity that presents itself excited whenever you sit at a table or view in a theater with a heavy sound and lighting capable of enhancing the action rolling on stage .

History - The Another surge in 1991 to take advantage of a loophole left by the Blues Workshop , of which four had been part and had a full schedule at that time . Offered a season at a bar called Train Lake drummer Gustav , who asked the others if they wanted to take the chance .

" It seemed easy and appeal to those letters that marked much curtíamos Hendrix , the Stones and other known public figures . It was a recipe without much possibility of error , such as a bread with a fried egg and tomato with salt and oil . Easy but very good thing, " recalls Salimon .

There is a dispute over who came up with the proposal of the name but the underlying idea is that if the bar could not have the blues band that wanted to be content with another (another ) .

The first shows were experimental and very scarce public . The band was enjoying the moment and the performance of each musician , always creating mysterious climates , valuing the dynamics and sound of the instruments .

Recognition - In 1994 the band has had its own audience and a packed nightclubs in the city in fairly frequent presentations . Gained ground and headed for theaters and public spaces such as parks , movie theaters and circuses in satellite cities .

The proof of maturity came in 1997 when he opened for Another Celso Blues Boy Theatre of Banking , receiving ten minute standing ovation from a crowd that refused to sit back.

Gustavo remembers clearly at least a dozen occasions in which the public has come to howl with the climate created by this quartet which now moves towards two decades of activity. "It was striking a presentation we did at one song at a concert of Guitars series Cerrado , when over a thousand people in a room crowded applauded the Villa Lobos Another from beginning to end," recalls .

The band was gaining expression and its members have always been required in brasiliense musicians market and , together or in different formations , climbed on stage with Blues Etílicos , Leny Andrade , BB King .

In 2002 , the band decided to renew their repertoire , including some pretty impactful soul ballads and listed among the favorite of the public . Was upset that the band gained new momentum and now includes a keyboard at their shows . In recording the live album , however, the band will choose to maintain historical sound , centered on the original best-known formation of public brasiliense .

In that decade and a half , the band went through temporary lineup changes , always returning to sharp and straight to the point that the quartet both public appreciates . And it is this team that will be staged in November to place , albeit belatedly size, Another Blues Band in Brasilia music history.

In late 2007 , the band recorded three nights in audio Rayuella Bistro, to being the best of compiled on a CD released in 2009 by GRV Discs performances .

Too bad guitarist Junior Watson isn't as prolific as he is talented. This is only his second solo album and it comes eight years after his first. Regardless, it's nearly an hour's worth of crackling jump blues, played and sung by a guy with chops to spare and a light enough vocal touch to make these 11 covers and three originals connect like the finest music from the '40s and '50s jazz/blues hipsters that have obviously influenced his style. Watson's own contemporaries, such as Rick Holmstrom, Jimmie Vaughan, and Kim Wilson, sing his praises for a good reason; his taste and tone recall the heavyweights of the jump genre without slavishly copying them. The guitarist chose to record this session entirely live in the studio. That's with no overdubs, even for the vocals. The environment allows him to connect to the material with a crisp immediacy, especially on an instrumental take of Pee Wee Crayton's "Blues After Hours." Saxist Baron Shul honks on his baritone and tenor horns like a man born half a century too late, and contributions from boogie-woogie piano master Gene Taylor on all but four tracks bring additional authenticity to the session. The set is peppered with obscure tunes from even more obscure artists such as Felix & His Hot Peppers, Woo Woo Moore, and Peppermint Harris, But Watson breathes new life into these dusty gems with a raw, rollicking approach that never feels studied or cramped. It makes for a rousing, upbeat, and swinging album that could just have well been recorded half a century earlier and is as close to a live date as you may ever get for this increasingly reclusive talent. ~Review by Hal Horowitz

10. Damn The Wicked (4:05)
11. Poor Reprise (1:56)

This is real music, soaked in sweat and polished with mud. No tricks, no gimmicks, just raw Rock n’ Roll. The Dirty Things came to life in 2013 as frontman/bassist Jim Wes, guitarist Jeremy Bryant, and drummer Dane Wes. Jim has many accolades as a writer and producer including being certified Gold for his work with Disney on "Watch Me" - Bella Thorne and Zendaya, and producing and cowriting the Comcast Sportsnet's NFL fight song "Get Ya Game On" with country star Maggie Rose. Jeremy Bryant is the son of Jeff Bryant former drummer of hit country act Ricochet. He has been on many studio albums as a session player as well as national tours with other major rock acts. Dane is Jim's younger brother, and he got his first break playing for a Nashville rapper. Together they played huge shows like Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and The Sundance Film Festival.

There was a hole inside all of them not getting to be part of music that they were whole-heartedly connected with. Together they tapped into the source of their desire to play music in the first place. They were able to channel ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Simon and Garfunkel, James Taylor, Van Morrison, Graham Central Station, Eagles, Cream, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Aerosmith, and many many more to discover what they feel is the very reason they began playing music. With that knowledge and influence, The Dirty Things have created a sound that is empowering, refreshing and provocative. The music contains the familiar truth and honesty that links all the aforementioned bands together, yet it is fueled by youth and arrogance that has disappeared from today’s music.

Rock n’ Roll is dead...buried in a graveyard dug by Nickelback; however, rock n’ roll is a zombie and when it busts out of the ground you will have to either run for cover or join.
