"A band is just as good as the drummer"

In a band, the rhythm section is undoubtedly the backbone of the musical event and the archaic need to move to the sound of a drum is probably one of the most fundamental characteristics that make us humans.
Even if it is mostly the front musicians who initially enjoy the listener's attention, it is the special magic of a “groovy” drum beat that unconsciously and naturally casts a spell over people.
The passionate musician Peter Müllerhas internalized this magic wonderfully in the course of his career and he has managed to establish himself as one of the most sought-after drummers in a wide variety of genres. Anyone who has the opportunity to make music with him knows his qualities and, as his friend, I would also like to emphasize the human side.
With this very personally designed CD he gives us his musical calling card and takes us on an impressive journey through various stations of his exciting career with the help of selected flashlights. Enjoy! ~Erik Trauner

Chris 'Bad News' Barnes - Live (Feat. Steve Guyger & Gary Hoey)

Year: 2019
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 54:37
Size: 126,6 MB
Styles: Electric blues
Scans: Front, back

1. Back In A Cadillac (3:26)
2. You Can't Judge A Book By The Cover (4:17)
3. Boom Boom (Out Go The Lights) (4:12)
4. Hungry & Horny (3:16)

6. Going Down (4:08)

10. Keep Your Mind On It (2:54)
11. I Drink Alone (4:54)
12. Whipping Post (5:19)
13. Raise Your Hand (4:17)

What to say about this guy, a musician who works the comedy and television circuit turning his evidently extraordinary searching eye on occasional, unexpected musical journey when the fancy takes him. Barnes has previously had considerable musical success with his delightful and disarming take on hokum blues, music that more than raises a smile, a nod and a blink of surprise. Here we have him working in a much more serious mode, live on-stage at the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise gig. This album has a touch of unevenness at times but that’s probably to be expected with a live recording in these circumstances.

Barnes has a mastery of stagecraft that is generally widely acknowledged but is too often viewed as a bit of a side-issue when it comes to serious musical endeavor. Here, supported by US harp master, Steve Guyger and the fiery fretwork of Gary Hoey, Barnes delivers a 13-track album that highlights his true musical worth. Produced as a live recording by Grammy-winner Tony Braunagel, Barnes fairly rattles through a range of modern blues classics including “You Can’t Judge A Book By The Cover,” “Hoochie Coochie Man” (maybe the best cut on the album), “It Hurts Me Too” and some of his trademark hokum with an amusingly neat slide into “Hungry & Horny,” a clear, biting parody of Earl King’s “Come On.”

With remarkable self-confidence, he ventures into the world of acoustic blues giant Big Bill Broonzy, with his own take on “Keep Your Mind On It,” before throwing in a chunk of Gregg Allman, a flash of George Thorogood and others, all well known to blues lovers everywhere. Barnes appears completely at ease here, roaring along with a blues gravity that is seldom associated with his off-the-cuff, mordant wit and sideways glance at the music world. As a result, Barnes comes across as a determinedly talented bluesman with this offering, a move that may catch many unaware but will surely push him firmly into the world of seriously good blues music. This is a surprising treat and an album definitely worth having. /Iain Patience, Elmore Magazine

Featuring three-time Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the

Year nominee Anthony Geraci on piano and world-renowned harp virtuoso Steve Guyger, formerly of the Jimmy Rogers Band, on harmonica, this collection of 15 original songs is a blues tour de force.

From the rowdy opener “Pitchin’ Woo” through the hilarious “Thrift Store Rubbers” and the driving closer “Trouble in the Jungle,” there’s plenty on the album to get fans on the dance floor. Harp lovers will delight at “Cotton Mouth,” the band’s tribute to James Cotton. And tear-stained tracks like “Ready for Goodbye” and “Just a Distant Memory” demonstrate the band’s mastery of the emotional power of the blues.

Thirty years of living and loving the blues is all captured on this release with an infectious combination of reverence for the music and a whole lotta fun!

After Prado Blues Band, Brazilian guitarist Igor Prado re-charges and jumps into his new band. Here, he reunites several partners too, including Steve Guyger, JJ Jackson and RJ Mischo to create this great album. Igor is one of those handful of players, true to the form of West Coast blues but at the same expressing his own musical personality. His guitar licks are imaginative and memorable - it is evident that he knows the guitar stylings of Junior Watson, Hollywood Fats and Pee Wee Crayton from A to Z but instead of copying them he uses them as a base for his own style. Very classy! "West Coast Blues is alive and well and living in Brazil!" ~Blues Revue Magazine.

Dennis Gruenling - I Just Keep Lovin' Him: A Tribute To Little Walter

11. Temperature (2:54)
12. One Of These Mornings (5:26)
13. That's It (3:16)
14. You're Sweet (3:39)

Using several harmonica maestros on a disc dedicated to one of the all time harmonica giants - Little Walter - seems like a fitting thing to do.

And that's exactly what Dennis Gruenling did.

Being a formidable player himself, on I Just Keep Lovin' Him, Gruenling is joined by Kim Wilson, Rick Estrin and Steve Guyger - all Little Walter enthusiasts - on harmonica and vocals; along with Dave Gross, Bill Hunt, Rusty Zinn and Bob Welsh on guitar.

On bass, he has Scot Hornick, Steve Wolf and Kedar Roy; and Mike Bram and Marty Dodson on drums.

There’s also Doug “Big Daddy” Sasfai on sax; and - last but certainly not least – Mrs. Gruenling - Gina Fox on vocals.

Attempting to avoid this tribute from being a compilation of overdone covers of Little Walters' greatest hits, Gruenling chose some of the legend’s more obscure works.

The list includes: “Up the Line,” “Lovin' Man,” “I Got To Go,” “Hot Shot,” “Too Young To Know,” “Corbella,” “If You Were Mine,” “My Little Machine,” “Teenage Beat,” “As Long As I Have You,” “Temperature,” “One Of These Mornings,” “That's It,” and “You're Sweet.”

Not being a vocalist himself, Gruenling distributed that duty equally among the four band mates who do sing.

“Lovin' Man” features Guyger singing like one of the many great Chicago bluesmen he's backed up throughout the years, with he and Gruenling both getting in their share of hot licks on the harp.

“Hot Shot” is a hot instrumental. This one features Gruenling alone, and quite aptly, handling the harp work, with great rhythm from Bram and Hornick on the drums and standup bass; and sharp, steady guitar from Dave Gross.

Estrin, with clearly one of the most distinguishable voices, takes over the microphone on “Too Young To Know.” On this track, the man, whose magnetism is surpassed by none, also provides some of the best harp work on the disc.

Doing what seems to come naturally to her, Gina Fox heats it up a bit on “If You Were Mine.” Sultry is a word that - if not careful - can easily become redundant when she is the topic. This track also features tremendous sax work from Big Daddy.

Oddly enough, “Teenage Beat” - an instrumental track that features Gruenling, Estrin, and Wilson all kickin' it on harp - is highlighted by the rhythm section. Wolf and Dodson are absolutely on fire on this one.

It's Wilson's turn to lead on “As Long As I Have You,” and when he's leading, you can never go wrong. Being one of the most soulful white singers these ears have ever heard, and certainly one of the best at blowin' a harp, automatically makes this another of the disc’s best. ~Review by Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro

A lot of harp players would come and go through Muddy Waters and Jimmy Rogers' bands over the years, but only a few harp players actually shared extensive tenure with these masters, soaking up the deep blues lessons and learning the tradition, hand-picked because their sound fit with the amplified Delta-Chicago gumbo invented over so many years ago. Most familiar names are James Cotton, Carey Bell, Mojo Buford, Paul Oscher and Jerry Portnoy, all of whom spent time with Muddy. But only one fellow harp player worked over a decade with Jimmy Rogers after Rogers' return to the blues late in life.

Steve Guyger played with Rogers for most of 14 years and yet he is probably the least-known among the aforementioned. Guyger initially studied guitar for five years before a friend gave him a harmonia as a gift and now he is a traditionalist in his approach to the instrument: big tone, nuance and a devotion to his forebears and his obvious choices. His encyclopedic knowledge of blues harmonica and of blues in general impresses fans and fellow musicians. He toured North America and Europe and shared the stage with all of the major harpists of the last decades: James Cotton, Paul Oscher, Charlie Musselwhite, Rod Piazza, Rick Estrin, William Clarke, Kim Wilson to name a few. Guyger always maintained his determination in keeping authentic harmonica blues alive in his own way, on his own terms. Backed by an all star band of veteran blues musicians, Steve Guyger has finally arrived on record with the release of Live at the Dinosaur, recorded at the Dinosaur Barbeque in Syracuse, NY. Listen and enjoy!

Living Legends is the result of a longstanding desire to record a true50/50 collaboration between these two blues luminaries; Paul Oscher & Steve Guyger. Mention Paul Oscher's name and you instinctively think of Muddy Waters. For five years Paul played with and watched Waters and Spann like a hawk from his matchless vantage point on stage. No one on the blues scene today can touch him as a multi-instrumentalist given his massive harmonica tone his ability to summon Muddy's spirit in his slide guitar playingor his prodigious piano technique.

Steve Guyger has devoted two decades to preserving classic blues tradition. He worked with Jimmy Rogers from 1980 to 1994. Paul and Steve are a link to the for fathers of modern blues bridging the past and present. They've made their sacrifices and paid their dues to remain true to this Art Form.

Steve Guyger (born September 12, 1952) is an American Chicago blues harmonica player, singer, and songwriter. He has recorded five albums since 1997, having previously backed Jimmy Rogers for almost fifteen years.

Rick Estrin, from Rick Estrin & the Nightcats, referred to Guyger in the liner notes of one of the latter's albums as "a true master of the blues harmonica." Guyger has played with Rogers, Charlie Musselwhite, Little Sammy Davis and Mark Hummel, and is proficient in both diatonic and chromatic instruments.

Steve Guyger & T. Leino Band - Keep It Moving!

10. Come, Come Back Baby (4:36)
11. Springtime Blues (4:12)
12. Jumpin' At Sauna (3:15)

The album "Keep It Moving" by Steve Guyger and the Finnish T. Leino Band provides a hefty 12-track portion of Chicago Blues. Five of the tracks are originals by Guyger. On the others, the line-up offers its interpretations on classics by e.g. Little Walter and the both Sonny Boy Williamsons. Guyger, a harpist and singer from Philadelphia, toured Finland with a local band in the latter parts of the years 2005 - 2007. The songs of the new album were recorded in Helsinki and Tampere during the first two Finnish trips.

In 2005, the festival crowd at Vaasa's Halloween Blues made the group play somewhat harder, but especially on the other two occasions it has been a real pleasure to listen to their sound – a sound that is no less than refined. Late 2007 also included a mini-tour of Russia.

As a singer, Steve Guyger is definitely not a shouter. His voice, instead, conveys a touch of roughness and loads of warmth. So it is a slight disappointment to notice that the new album seldom compares to the effect of his live performances. For example, the Sonny Boy Williamson II cover "Red Hot Kisses" introduces a Guyger that pushes his way through in a constrained manner. Better moments are evident, though: Guyger's own "My Baby's Gone" and "Come, Come Back Baby" bring the singer so close to the listener. Let's concentrate on our strengths, so we'll stay on top of our game, as a hockey coach would probably put it.

Kari Karpo's double bass is always a pleasing experience at the band's gigs. They usually play on low volumes; so low that you can hear the fingers meet the strings, and at the right times, the strings hit the fretboard in true slappin' style. It is another letdown here: on the cd, the bass does not get the credit it deserves.

On the other hand, Tomi Leino's semi-hollow guitar appears at its untiring and endlessly innovative best. It sounds as good as it does live. There is no real soloing, however; and there should not be, because "Keep It Moving" is first and foremost a harmonica album. Guyger's harp work is full of tones and rich on technique. Jarkko Lepistö and Jupe Litmanen, then again, have obviously absorbed the essence of Chicago style drumming.

The album seems to be tackling an eternal problem: how to catch the feel and the sound of live performances on record? A bigger investment in production would surely have helped this cd to overcome the problem. The first-class musicians of the album are hardly the ones to blame for the light-weight production; the reasons for the low number of professionally produced blues albums in Finland are somewhere else.

Blues legend Eddie Boyd moved to Finland in the early 70's and cut the album "Praise to Helsinki"; Guyger and the Leino Band are no worse with their Guyger-written Finnish-influenced instrumentals "Mumbo in Helsinki" and "Jumpin' at Sauna". Finnish blues history does not get rewritten with "Keep It Moving", but the album surely adds a few interesting chapters to it.

Thanks to Kempen.

Philadelphia is home to one of the finest blues harp players in the world, much to the surprise of people not “inside” the blues scene. Over the past thiry-plus years, Steve Guyger with his band, The Excellos, has been dishing out some of the finest blues to be heard anywhere. Steve has toured with the late Jimmy Rogers, among others, and has played with many of the great Chicago bluesmen and contemporary players, yet he remains one of the best kept secrets in blues. The late William Clarke called Steve “the best harp player I’ve ever seen.” Mark Hummel called him “a monster player.” If you have heard Steve play, you know what they’re talking about. If you’ve never heard him, you’re missing a major page in your blues portfolio.

Steve began playing harp back in the late 60’s on a harmonica given to him by his future sister-in-law. Sometime later, his brother turned him on to Paul Butterfield. Steve’s passion for the blues harp took him to Chicago to learn at the feet of the masters of the art. Each trip taught him skills that he brought back to the local bands in which he paid his dues. Steve has shared the stage with the greats in Chicago and the contemporary harp players touring the world today, names like Little Sammy Davis, Carey Bell, Rick Estrin, Rod Piazza, Kim Wilson, Mark Hummel, Charlie Musselwhite and many others. His playing, vocals, songwriting and stage presence have earned him a place among the best of the players on stage today.

Rooted firmly in the Little Walter and William Clarke school of overdriven, usually amplified harmonica, Steve Guyger blasts through 14 tracks of sturdy Chicago-styled blues. The former touring bandmember for Jimmy Rogers tears into these predominantly self-penned tunes with the fervor of the best postwar bluesmen, blowing with precision, intensity, and emotion. The tracks crackle with energy, whether they are in a slower tempo or more upbeat. Guyger exudes a smoky, everyman voice that won't win any awards, yet works well with this material. But it's his gutsy harp, tight band, and imaginative arrangements that drive this album. From the John Lee Hooker vibe of "Rib Shack Boogie" (one of three newly added tracks) to the slow, ominous swamp crawl of the instrumental "Snake Oil" and the noir jazz of "Monkey on a Limb," Guyger shifts moods and styles while maintaining a tough, moody attack. His playing on the playful "Somethin's Smellin' Good (At My Baby's House)" is heavily reminiscent of Kim Wilson's best work. Swinging drummer Joe Maher, leader of labelmate Big Joe & the Dynaflows, contributes skin work, but it's his production that shines here. Each instrument is crisply recorded, and the songs breathe no matter how fiercely Guyger blows. The album is essential listening for harmonica fans, and a real find for any serious lover of Chicago blues. ~Review by Hal Horowitz

"Gimme Coffee!", the debut release of Austrian blues band "Herby & The Mudcats" represents a fresh mixture of swinging West Coast jump tunes, gritty Chicago Blues, rough and dirty sounds, inspired by the Mississippi Delta as well as smooth ballads. Each of the 16 songs featured on this CD tells its own story in its own way about the ups and downs in life. The band's tight sound gets spiced up by the angelic voice of Martina Kucera and an impressive guest appearance by blues harp legend Steve Guyger. This is a must have for the true blues aficionado!
