Walter was born in 1939 in Beaufort, NC and learned to play guitar there. In 1960 he was in New York playing for The Gospel Four and starting his recording career as a member of the Golden Arrows. Pretty soon though he made the move into R & B as a member of the Blues Boys duo, touring with such artists as the wonderful Big Maybelle and Shep & The Limelights. With his cousin Arthur Little he apparently recorded as Walt and Art for Dessa, before recording his first solo sessions for Blanche Kaslin’s Hull, with the Leo Price Band. He chose the name The Blonde Bomber as a variant on heavyweight boxer Joe Louis’ nickname The Black Bomber for his own albino pigmentation. http://www.sirshambling.com/artists_2012/R/walter_rhodes/index.php

Anyone who enters the rehearsal room of the Zurndorf band Fahnerman Jansen immediately knows what is being played here. The thick cigarette smoke, the instruments, all older than you, and Jimi Hendrix, his guitar choking out of the record player's speakers in the background - it all screams rock 'n' roll. In fact, you could think you were back in another era. One in which electronic music from smartphone speakers was considered unthinkable and being a DJ was not yet a common hobby for young people interested in music. It's different today. It's the same for Fahnerman Jansen's men, all three employees at the Kittsee Hospital. Rock 'n' roll is experiencing a revival here. “The honest art of the instrument is the top priority,” says singer and guitarist Andreas Fleck right at the beginning of our conversation. He elaborates: “Improvisation is also a central point of our music. Nowadays everything is so structured, in the past you just let it happen.” True words for everyone who has ever attended a performance by the band. “For us there is a beginning and an end, the rest comes by itself. There is also no fixed set list. Often a concert is over and we realize that we haven’t played half of the songs.” They received additional help in the mix from Nickelsdorf sound technician and Radio Grenzwelle operator Thomas Vsudibyl and from Mario Schmid in mastering. The album will therefore be released on vinyl, because the band members themselves prefer to enjoy music served on the turntable. Rock on!

Looking at his long career you’d have to call Walter Rhodes primarily a bluesman, but he did cut three masterpieces in the soul genre which haven’t really received their due attention. In fact his music in general hasn’t been studies properly, partly due to the number of names he recorded under and partly due to the obscure labels he cut for. HA highly talented musician, he was a more than competent guitarist and blues harp player but his crowning glory was his voice. He was never a flashy singer, but there were few who put so much of themselves into a lyric, and fewer still who made such emotionally compelling performances. My friend Dickie Tapp, who saw him live in 1989, says "I will never forget Walter Rhodes' appearance at the Blues Estafette in 1989. It was one of the most emotional performances I have ever witnessed and the 'pain' in his singing had me close to tears. Walter was backed by a small ad-hoc combo which included Teddy Reynolds on piano and Sherman Webster on bass - they all gelled." And that force and intensity was with him whatever musical style he chose. http://www.sirshambling.com/artists_2012/R/walter_rhodes/index.php

Blowin' Through Town is a live album culled from several gigs that took place in the UK between May 2001 and December 2002, with Simon 'Honeyboy' Hickling fronting two different versions of his electric band 'The DT's. In the company of his long time side-kick, guitarist Big Al Taylor, you will find Hickling either with Tony Stuart/Craig Rhind on bass and Tony Baylis/Alan 'Sticky' Wicket on drums.

Hickling and his colleagues are so well integrated as a band you cannot hear the join. Hickling has a wonderful tone on harp and also possesses a good set of vocal pipes, which he and the DT's put to good use on familiar material like "Juke" and "High Heeled Sneakers' and less-familiar stuff like Hickling's own "Judgment Day". Big Al Taylor shows himself to be a top-notch guitarist who can give his old opo a good run for his money with his heavily West Coast-style-influenced guitar solos. /Scott Duncan, Blues In Britain

Europe's top blues band returns 34 years after its founding with another top-notch studio album. CD in three-piece digisleeve and limited LP on Rhythm Bomb. Some 4000 live acts worldwide, multiple winners of the German Blues Award, winner of the Deutsche Schallplattenkritik, 17 albums, voted best band or artist of the year not only by German but also British and French media, shows in more than 20 countries - the Hildesheim quintet around brothers Michael and Andreas Arlt has achieved incredible things.

After Breaking Point (2021), the quintet with its stunningly lively vintage cocktail of blues, rhythm & blues and soul did not need much asking: of the 14 brand-new numbers, seven are amazingly confident original compositions. In addition, Ray Charles, Chick Morris, B.B. King, Albert King, Bobby Blue Bland, Johnnie Taylor and Linda Ronstadt are put into the spotlight in wonderful new interpretations.

The magnificent brass players Tom Müller and Simon Hartl put the icing on the cake of this emotional and stylish round trip through the golden age of US light music. Insane solos and fantastically grooving rhythms seem to be pulled from a hat by this world-class troupe. Europe's most successful blues band once again impressively puts itself in pole position.

No one can bring a blues festival to your living room quite like harmonica master Bob Corritore. One of the blues world’s great team players, his latest release, Somebody Put Bad Luck on Me, features a huge roster of musicians that includes some of today’s most talented performers. Culled from 14 different recording sessions that took place between 2019 and 2023, Corritore’s latest album treats listeners to an extra-large portion of talent and top-notch performances.

Opening track This Little Voice features longtime Corritore collaborator John Primer. As always, Corritore’s muscular harp work perfectly complements Primer’s gritty voice and guitar. Cash Box Kings vocalist Oscar Wilson lends his distinctive voice to the title track, a satisfying slice of no-nonsense Chicago blues. Clean, understated guitar work from Jimi “Primetime” Smith fleshes out the arrange- ment. Detroit blues queen Thornetta Davis’ vocals take center stage on Remember Me. Outstanding piano work from Dave Keyes adds atmosphere, and Corritore contributes one of his finest harp solos. Lurrie Bell’s weathered voice and distinctive guitar work create a lowdown feel on the slow blues Act Like You Love Me. Bob Margolin’s blistering slide guitar solo adds bite.

Some of this collection’s most striking tracks feature soul blues artists performing in a raw, stripped-down setting. On the minor key workout Midnight Love, Johnny Rawls bares his soul on vocals while Shea Marshall’s organ and Doug James’ sax add grit. Corritore, playing delicate, unamplified harmonica, acts as a per- fect musical foil for Rawls. Bobby Rush is his usual sly, charismatic self on the simmering. funky I’m Good as Gone. Chester Thompson’s organ stirs some spice into the mix. On Goin’ Fishin’ Sugaray Rayford gleefully handles the double entendre-laden lyrics. Intertwining gui- tars from Kid Ramos and Johnny Main anchor the arrangement, and Corritore’s harp blowing is once again spot on.

Somebody Put Bad Luck on Me is so packed with outstanding musicianship and deft ensemble playing that listeners are bound to find something new to love with each listen. Even with a discography as extensive as Corritore’s, this release stands out as a gem. /Jon Kleinman, Living Blues

Much of the material was written and developed on this tour. The Savages are now in their 40th year of recording and this LP is a genre bending pile driver that has the same energy as their self titled LP from 1983. The band features original line-up core members Barrence Whitfield, Peter Greenberg and Phil Lenker along with Andy Jody and Tom Quartulli who have been with the band a dozen years.

The LP was produced by Mike Mariconda and the Savages were joined on this recording by Spencer Evoy on Baritone Sax. The Savages most recently had a successful run of recordings on Bloodshot Records, having re-grouped in 2010. They continue to unleash their distinctive brand of rock & roll that mixes up a cocktail of soul, blues and garage. It is timeless and highly recommended! /Sonic Rendezvous

Recorded at The Marshall Studio, mixed by Chris Sheldon (Jeff Beck, Foo Fighters, King King) and mastered at the legendary Abbey Road Studios by Christian Wright (Jack Bruce, Robin Trower, Ten Years After). Jones’ latest effort is rip-snortin’, hard-rockin’ blues album with one eye on 1970’s classic hard rock, and its counterpart very much focused upon the here and now. ‘Bad Luck & The Blues’ is a love letter to hard hitting blues rock, with a concise, contemporary edge. Refining his sound and returning as a power-trio that features long time bassist Jack Alexander Timmis (Virgil & The Accelerators) and new drummer Ash Sheehan (Glenn Hughes, Tony Iommi, The Twang), the new record sees Laurence at his rawest, showcasing his virtuoso guitar talents while remaining faithful to his blues roots. “I started my career in a power-trio, and gradually moved away from that. Going back to those roots was an itch that I’d wanted to scratch for ages.” Jones explains. “Two of my biggest heroes were Gary Moore and Jimi Hendrix, and that’s the direction I wanted to go in, along with some more contemporary influences such as Queens of The Stone Age, Jack White, and Royal Blood. My main point of reference on this album was Robin Trower. I had been a fan for years, but I used lockdown to sink myself into his playing style and the tone he used.” The pivot point when deciding to go all out with his dream, Jones cites New Year’s Eve of 2022. “I made it a resolution of mine; that’s why the line-up changed so quickly before the next tour,” he remembers. “You only live once. I have Crohn’s disease, so I never take anything for granted. You should live every day like it’s your last.” Along with the announcement comes the release of the brand-new video ‘LONELY ROAD’, which sees Jones acknowledging his personal struggles and daily trials, while keeping two hands on the wheel, and his sights dead set on the horizon ahead. “We all have our ups and downs twists and turns, and in many ways, we come to many crossroads, but at the end of the journey we all reach the same place… Enjoy the ride while you can. We all travel through this life together but when on the verge, we all walk alone. “For many years I’ve battled with my Crohn’s disease,” shares Jones “and many times I have ventured down my own personal lonely road. Everybody’s experiences in life are different, and we all have our own individual troubles. This song tells us we must continue and keep on the right path. “Lonely Road was recorded live in the studio, so what you hear on record is what you get live. True honest blues rock played by three musicians in a room, playing from the heart.”

The rhythm and blues harp vocabulary available to the Honeyboy has been acquired in the only way possible, years on years of playing the harp with R&B acts in smoky venues and recording studios. His time with Steve Marriot started the idea that was to become the R&B album featuring songs that a harp player would choose. "Sleeping In The Ground", "Don't Believe In Nothing", "Cant Hold Out Much Longer" and even a version of "La Cucaracha" that will put a smile on the bluest heart.

Recorded at John Entwistle's studio in 1994, the recording band features Brendan O'Neil, Gerry McAvoy and Anthony Thistlethwaite with appearances by Geraint Watkins, Steve Gibbons, The Kick Horns (Roddy Lorimer, Tim Saunders, Simon Clarke) and Big Al Taylor. Recorded in a 'studio live' situation, the recording features real performances by human players, unfettered by technological intrusion. No computer processors feature in the performances. Straight from the heart playing really.

This special, 16-track expanded edition features the original album plus five previously unreleased bonus tracks: an alternate take of “Looking For Answers,” two new album outtakes, and two live versions of Just Won’t Burn album tracks recorded with Tedeschi Trucks Band at NYC’s Beacon Theatre.

“Making Just Won’t Burn was a pivot,” Tedeschi says of the album, which was co-produced by Tom Hambridge and Tedeschi and recorded by Sean Carberry at Rear Window Studio, Brookline, MA. The album features musicians such as guitarists Adrienne Hayes and Sean Costello and harmonica player Annie Raines tackling Tedeschi’s original songs in tandem with material popularized by Ruth Brown, Junior Wells, and John Prine. “All of a sudden, I was working with different groups of people, new musicians, new songwriting collaborators. We had no idea how it was going to turn out. I think the thing that held it all together was the blues. Blues is a language that I love. You can take it anywhere in the world and communicate with people, which isn’t necessarily true about other forms of music. And being a white artist in a black milieu, you just have to let the music speak.”

Speak it did, as Just Won’t Burn went Platinum (a rare achievement for a blues-based album at that time) and earned Tedeschi a GRAMMY nomination for Best New Artist in 2000 (alongside the of-the-moment cast of Britney Spears, Macy Gray, Kid Rock, and Christina Aguilera). It would be the first of five GRAMMY nominations for Tedeschi as a solo artist, with each of her next three solo releases earning nods for Best Contemporary Blues Album.

Even after 25 years, the past-decade plus of which have seen Tedeschi rise to even greater heights with her husband Derek Trucks in Tedeschi Trucks Band, Just Won’t Burn remains a touchstone of blues-based rock’n’roll. “The way people react to Just Won’t Burn has always been heartwarming and surprising,” she admits. “I used to get letters from a prisoner who identified with the songs and found hope in them, and then I started getting letters from the rest of the prisoners on the cell block because it was the only cassette they had.”

“Sometimes when I look back on the 25 years since the release, I think about the places I’ve been and the adventures I’ve had, and I feel like Forrest Gump,” Tedeschi continues. “I say, ‘No! You’re a baseball mom. You didn’t do all that!’ But I must have. The blues has its demands. You have to be honest — musically, emotionally, and personally — above everything else, and that can lead to some uncomfortable truths. But the blues hasn’t burned me. It hasn’t hurt me. It’s my main resource. I can express myself and get stuff out about my life – or, like B.B. always said, ‘whatever ails you.’ The blues got me here.”

Scottish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Sandi Thom, best known for her 2006 No.1 hit single I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair), is pleased to confirm the August 27th release of her fourth studio album Flesh and Blood. Produced by the Black Crowes’ Rich Robinson, and featuring a rare duet with Buffy Sainte-Marie, the album was recorded at 16 Tons studio, Nashville, Tennessee, making it Sandi’s fourth album following 2010’s critically acclaimed Merchants and Thieves. Sandi’s new song, Sun Comes Crashing Down will be available as a free download from www.sandithom.com on Monday May 21st. Flesh and Blood is a significant release, being Sandi’s sophomore studio album, released solely by her independent label Guardian Angels Records (distributed in the UK by Nova through Universal Music Operations). The highly anticipated new album radiates the raunchy blues rock bravado of the opening track Help Me, followed by the country-flavoured Leadbelly classic In The Pines. The album also features the strutting, clavinet-led Stormy Weather; and the emotionally compelling finale Lay Your Burden Down. The album features an all-star ensemble led by Black Crowes Rich Robinson, drummer Steve Gorman and fellow Black Crowe and widely travelled session guitarist Audley Freed, respected Nashville stars Mike Webb (keys/Dobro) and James Haggerty (bass) complete the line-up with special guest performances from Rolling Stones collaborator, saxophonist Bobby Keys, and stunning duet with the legendary singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie on her 1992 classic The Big Ones Get Away. “Sandi really stretched herself and made a bold new album,” reflects Rich Robinson, “Her songs are honest, vulnerable and very strong. Her vocal abilities are showcased really well, as is her guitar work, and harp playing. I think Sandi’s made a great record. It was a joy to work with her.” Legendary classic rock producer Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, The Black Crowes, Joe Bonamassa) also mixed two tracks, Sun Comes Crashing Down and a duet with Buffy Sainte-Marie on the latter’s classic song, The Big Ones Get Away. “Sandi’s writing is fantastic,” says Shirley, “and her singing is wonderful. Sun Comes Crashing Down has all the right ingredients to be a hit.” The intriguingly titled I Love You Like A Lunatic, is based on her “life-changing” love affair with superstar blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa. The couple have been together three years now, living and loving on and off the road. Sandi likens it to a modern-day Johnny Cash and June Carter fairy-tale. “My life just turned crazy,” says Sandi. “Yet that’s what everybody wants, that insane kind of love that utterly consumes you.” Sandi feels that Flesh and Blood is her coming of age album. “All I ever want to do is write songs that connect with people,” says Sandi. “With this album I’ve finally found a place where I can make the very best music I can achieve. The people that only know me from Punk Rocker won’t recognise me on this album. But they are going to find out another side of me.”

Grant is a down to earth guy. When we put together the pieces of his biography he said, "Nah man, this is all crap. I'm just a guy with his guitar. You have to tell the story without going four ways. " So we thought, who could better tell his story than Grant himself? Through his music. Some 40+ years ago David Coverdale sang the immortal words, “I love the blues, They tell my story, If you don’t feel it you can never understand” and they are as true today as they ever were. If you get the blues, really get the blues, there is nothing else like it and although I love the electric works of Lightnin’ Hopkins, T-Bone Walker and Muddy Waters, there is something about the pre-war acoustic blues which hold a special place, people like Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Blake, Lead Belly and so many others. Just a person with an acoustic guitar (mostly male but check out Elizabeth Cotton if you have never heard her), a microphone, and a heart full of pain.

Multiple Blues Music Award Winner Nick Schnebelen has a smokin’ new high-energy Rock ‘n’ Blues album, “What Key Is Trouble In?” Co-produced by Blues Music Award Winner Chris Hardwick (Watermelon Slim) and set for international release by the VizzTone label group, these thirteen all-original tracks find Nick playing, singing and writing at the top of his game. Nick is backed on the album by his veteran band Adam Hagerman (drums) and Cliff Moore (bass), with guests Red Young on keyboards (Eric Burden, Marcia Ball, Janiva Magness), Buddy Leach on sax (George Thorogood), and Aaron Mayfield on organ. Lately Nick and the band have been touring in Europe as the opening act for George Thorogood and the Destroyers, as they have since pre-pandemic days. They have the pure blues power it takes to fill that slot, and they have won a lot of new fans in the audience as they play a consistently killer opening set, and Nick always joins GT on the encore. Nick got his introduction to the worldwide Blues community in 2008, along with siblings Danielle and Kris, as a founding member of the Kansas City band Trampled Under Foot as they overwhelmed the competition to win the 2008 International Blues Challenge, with Nick winning the Albert King Award for “Best Guitarist”. The band later won the “Contemporary Blues Album” Blues Music Award. Nick left the band in 2014 and proceeded to release three critically acclaimed albums under his own name. “What Key Is Trouble In?” is the follow up to Nick’s critically acclaimed 2019 release, “Crazy All By Myself.”

Studio City, California — The world bids farewell to the legendary Jazz and Blues singer Barbara Morrison, as her final album, BLUES MAMA!. Despite her passing on March 16, 2022, Morrison’s creative brilliance lives on through this remarkable album, which she was working on alongside producer David Longoria and the incredible blues ensemble, The Legacy.

David Longoria, an award-winning music producer and artist known for his hits in jazz, dance, and other genres, first met Barbara Morrison in 2018 during the production of his album MOOD. Their collaboration on the classic jazz song “Body And Soul” earned them the prestigious 2019 Hollywood Music In Media Best Jazz award, and their friendship was instantly forged. Reflecting on their time together, Longoria fondly recalls her beautiful spirit and mesmerizing voice.

BLUES MAMA! consists of 15 captivating tracks, including beloved blues classics that Morrison was renowned for delivering in her unmistakable, authentic style. The album’s title track, “Blues Mama!”, was specially written for her by David Longoria, showcasing their deep artistic connection. Additionally, another original song titled “Gotta Get To You,” penned by Longoria and iconic songwriter Carol Connors, graces the collection. Miss Connors, famous for her work on timeless classics such as “With You I’m Born Again” and the theme for the Rocky movies, sang the song on the album as a tribute to Morrison, who unfortunately passed away before recording the vocals.

The album also features three special excerpts from the title track, playfully rendered in old blues styles, and titled Interludes and a Postlude.
Throughout her illustrious career spanning over 50 years, Barbara Morrison mesmerized audiences worldwide with her performances in concerts, blues clubs, and Jazz and Blues festivals. Notably, a remarkable performance in July 2004 brought together Blues Guitar legend Buddy Guy, Barbara Morrison, and Carlos Santana on stage at a festival in Montreal, Switzerland. Her talent also graced the stage alongside greats like Stevie Wonder, Dizzy Gillespie, Chaka Khan, Ray Charles, Etta James, and Tony Bennett, among many others.

In 2019, Morrison established the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center in Leimert Park, California, a venue dedicated to nurturing performers of all ages and cultures and promoting music and dance. To honor her immense contribution, the City of Los Angeles named the intersection in front of her venue Barbara Morrison Square in 2022.
Reflecting on her legacy, Carol Connors, who co-wrote “Gotta Get To You” with David Longoria, expressed her admiration for Morrison’s unique interpretation of their song “With You I’m Born Again.” She describes feeling reborn after hearing Morrison’s jazz rendition and proudly acknowledges the impact they made together. Dionne Warwick, also touched by Morrison’s talent, passionately asserts that her final recording should be considered for a Grammy without a second thought.

As we celebrate Barbara Morrison’s extraordinary career and mourn her loss, let us cherish the beautiful gift she has left behind with BLUES MAMA!, a timeless testament to her unparalleled artistry.

Having grown up with the sounds of early jazz & blues music (Bessie Smith, Robert Johnson and Louis Armstrong) and evolved into a musician of his own with the strong influences of Elvis, Chuck Berry, Beatles, Stones, Yardbirds and Bob Dylan, Wayne Nicholson developed a very unique understanding of music.

With a career spanning 50 years, Nicholson recorded and released eight albums and has toured with artists such as Ike & Tina Turner, Gregg Allman, James Cotton, J Geils Band, Jeff Healey, and more. Nicholson is also a past winner of the East Coast Music Awards Stompin' Tom Award, given to performers who have made a mark in the music scene of Atlantic Canada and who are perceived as unsung heroes.

One of the fortunate side effects of the pandemic lockdown was the proliferation of live streaming shows from solo artists and small groups, which created a renewed appreciation and demand for such intimate performances. Fingerstyle acoustic blues guitarist, singer-songwriter and instructor Chris Yakopcic has been playing the circuit of bars, cafés and listening rooms for over a decade. His third album Live At The Hidden Gem, recorded in one special evening at the Dayton Ohio music club, captures Yakopcic at his finest; delivering award-winning pre-war Delta and Piedmont Blues inspired by his heroes Robert Johnson, Bill Broonzy, Blind Blake and more. The twelve-song set is an even split of originals and cover songs, each showcasing his jaw dropping talent at rhythmic, high-energy thumb-bass picking guitar patterns and sweeping dynamics that accompany his homespun sincere vocal stylings.

Yakopcic opens with his jaunty tune “Gotta Get Goodbye Somehow,” its rolling rhythm defying the physical constraints of five fingers on one hand. Blind Blake is known as ragtime guitar's foremost fingerpicker and many of his songs have been transcribed for continued study, on which Yakopcic demonstrates his scholarship in the style with a deft reading of Blake’s “Chump Man Blues” from 1929. The funky “When It All Goes Wrong At Once” is a hard luck and trouble narrative told over a fast-moving groove. He digs deep into Robert Johnson’s 1937 Delta Blues cornerstone “Traveling Riverside Blues,” easing slowly into the open tuning 12-bar then ramping his slide playing on dobro to a fury. “The Hangover” and its delicately picked shuffle is a contrast to the tale of man lamenting his life choices on the morning after the night before. He takes Leonard Cohen’s statement about the songwriting craft “Tower Of Song,” and transforms it into a frenzy of bluegrass licks and tongue twisting vocal phrases.

An affectionate reading of “Kind Hearted Woman” further reflects Yako’s devotion to the art of the Delta Blues. His National Trojan Roundneck Resonator Guitar sings like a gospel choir on “Sounds Of The Highway,” painting a vibrant picture of the traveling minstrel life. Yakopcic elevates the “hammer on” guitar technique to a new high on his brisk remake of Tom Waits’ rumbling train song “2:19,” and the slinky “Sweet Time Blues,” pays tribute to the maker with a sampling of St Louis Blues. His heartfelt ballad “My Last Three Strings,” speaks of tender mercies and better days. Yako pulls out all the stops on “Preachin’ Blues,” playing lead and rhythm all at once and revving up the Robert Johnson standard for a pyrotechnic finale.

Live At The Hidden Gem by Chris Yakopcic is the portrait of a master craftsman in love with his work. ~Rick J Bowen

Guess Who is a studio album by B.B. King. It was released in 1972 by ABC Records. As often with King, several of the tracks are re-recordings of songs he had recorded before. "Any Other Way" had appeared with a different arrangement as the b-side of "Help the Poor" in 1964. "Neighborhood Affair" originally dates back to 1953 and was the b-side of "Please Hurry Home". He would re-record the song again in 2003 for the album Reflections.

The title track "Guess Who" had appeared on his first ABC album, Mr. Blues, in 1963. It went on to become a live staple, appearing on Now Appearing at Ole Miss, Live at the Apollo and Live at the Royal Albert Hall 2011, among others. "You Shouldn't Have Left" was first recorded in 1959 and released on (The Soul of) B.B. King in 1963. A 1965 recording of "Five Long Years" was first released by Kent on the album The Jungle. /Wikipedia

Boo Boo Davis is a survivor and belongs to the last generations of musicians that write and play the blues based on first hand experience of a hard life in the Mississippi Delta. He was born and raised in Drew, Mississippi in the heart of Delta. It was the richest cotton land in the South and the large amounts of field workers attracted the best musicians from the surrounding areas. The entire Delta region was rich with blues, but the town of Drew was a particularly fertile one. Charley Patton stayed near Drew for many years and several legendary performers spent time there. Sharecroppers sang loudly to help pass the grueling hours of work and without a doubt Boo Boo developed his loud, bellowing voice based on the singing he heard in the fields as a young boy. In fact, that voice, through the years has demolished many amps and speaker cabinets.

Boo Boo's father, Sylvester Davis farmed cotton and played several instruments. Musicians who he played with include John Lee Hooker, Elmore James and Robert Pete Williams. Boo Boo remembers these and other musicians dropping by and rehearsing at their house. At the age of five Boo Boo was playing the harmonica and singing in church with his mother. By thirteen he was playing guitar, and by eighteen he was playing out with his father and older brothers under the name of The Lard Can Band. This band travelled all throughout the Delta. In the early sixties he went north to St Louis and was around during the heyday of the St Louis music scene (Albert King, Ike Turner, Chuck Berry and many others). Together with his brothers they were the weekend house band in Tabby's Red Room in East St Louis for eighteen years.

Even though Boo Boo moved north to St. Louis, he will always be a southerner at heart. When he is at home (and not performing) his favorite pastimes are hunting with his dogs and fishing. During Boo Boo's childhood there was no time or money for him to go to school so he never learned to read and write. However that did not prevent him to travel all over the world. Following his guiding spirit (that he calls Dave) Boo Boo has found a way to deal with modern society. The blues helps him to keep his spirit high and survive day-to-day life. It deals with all the basic raw elements of life; good and bad, plain and simple.

King Ernest - King Of Hearts

Album: King Of Hearts
Size: 106,8 MB
Time: 46:15
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 1997
Styles: Blues
Art: Full

1. I Resign (4:47)
2. I'm Not The One (3:41)
3. In The Dark (4:10)
4. Black Bag Blues (4:26)
5. Better Days (4:38)
6. Long As I Have You (6:15)
7. Tell Me What's The Reason (3:51)
8. Cryin' For My Baby (5:04)
9. Sadie (5:04)
10. Forgive Me (4:14)

The title is descriptive of why Ernest deserves a royal title, as his punchy vocals are blues laden with a splash of soul. Also, the title serves as the central theme of the material which runs the gamut of emotions ranging from heartbreak ("Tell Me the Reason," "Better Days," and "Cryin' for My Baby"), doubt ("I'm Not the One"), preference to escape life's problems ("Black Bag Blues"), disgust ("I Resign"), jealousy ("In the Dark"), desire ("Sadie"), and remorse ("Forgive Me").

Ernest's musicians are proven blue(s) bloods, some of them being Paul Bryant (Robert Lucas), "Jimmy Rip" (Mick Jagger), and Lester Butler. Jagger's contribution, "Better Days," was originally slated for one of Jagger's solo albums, but then rightfully deeded to Ernest's pipes. Other well-chosen royal subjects come from songwriters/artists Junior Parker, Charlie Musselwhite, and Hound Dog Taylor. Hats go off to producer Randy Chortkoff, whose bold moves to record Ernest rightfully grants him the throne that's been denied him for far too long. /Char Ham, AllMusic

Another edition to the "backroom boys of soul, blues and R&B" to go along with Howard Biggs, Red Saunders, Leroy Kirkland and King Kolax. Sax Kari was a major artist in this field and spent most of his life in music, recording for a multitude of labels some of which can be heard here and when not singing he can be heard on guitar or piano.

Our selection starts with two titles recorded under his own name in 1947 with the Carolina Cotton Pickers, a long established jazz band with Anita Patterson handling the vocal on one, Kari the other, the original version of "Signifying Monkey" later recorded by Johnny Otis and many others. Gloria Irving follows with her recording in 1953 of "Daughter (That's Your Red Wagon)" a follow up to Ruth Brown's "Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean" and it made the Billboard R&B charts at No. 8. There's a selection with Gloria, then Bob "Detroit Count" White before a move to Chess with Lena Gordon's only two recordings.

At this stage in his career Kari switched to the popular vocal group format with the Senators, La Fets and Kitty & The Quailtones before reverting back to the blues with Katie Watkins, a much sort after Checker 45 with Kari as Texas Red, one of his many name changes. He's also Texas Red with the Contours for the next two titles. Then back to Kari with The Alley Kats & Kitty and Little Sammy Ward before the crazy finish with his orchestra on "Goldie The Green Eyed Octopus" a spoof title similar to "Flying Purple People Eater" complete with sound effects.

Here we have brief snapshot of the versatility of Sax Kari, more a major force in the soul, blues and R&B field than a backroom boy.

The Record Company are a swaggering three-piece rock band with a lean, rootsy sound, but don't call them a blues act. While the blues is a major ingredient in their sound, they approach the music in their own way, blending the influences of foundational artists like Muddy Waters and Jimmy Reed with the tougher and more upbeat attack of early rock & roll. The group was formed by three friends who went from listening to old records to playing music inspired by their favorites. Performing small venues for small money, the trio developed a serious buzz in their hometown of Los Angeles, and soon shared bills with major artists, landing a record deal in 2015. Their debut album, 2016's Give It Back to You, was a strong roots rock session that garnered a Grammy nomination, and 2018's All of This Life was more eclectic in its approach, but just as passionate. 2023's The 4th Album split the difference between no-frills tunes and hard-grooving rhythms.

The Record Company were formed in 2011 by three serious music fans who had each moved to Los Angeles from the Midwest and East Coast - Vos from Milwaukee, Wisconsin; bassist Alex Stiff from Wayne, Pennsylvania; and drummer Marc Cazorla from Elmira, New York. Stiff and Cazorla first met during their college days, when they both played in a rowdy blues band that often headlined at frat parties. Once he graduated, Stiff moved to Los Angeles, and after a spell in Nashville, Cazorla followed suit, and the two friends rented a house together to save money. Vos, who grew up on a dairy farm, followed a whim and headed to Los Angeles in 2010 with his wife, and he met Stiff and Cazorla after placing an ad on Craigslist looking for like-minded music buffs.

The three men struck up a friendship and would regularly get together to share favorite sides from their extensive vintage record collections over beers. The guys made the jump to forming a band when Cazorla bought a battered drum kit at a garage sale. After posting some rehearsal recordings online, the trio, now known as the Record Company, began playing out, appearing at smaller clubs and record stores where the cover was low (or free) and curious listeners could easily check them out. The strategy worked, as the Record Company developed a significant following in their hometown, and they graduated to larger venues and festival dates, as well as opening for the likes of B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Blackberry Smoke, and Social Distortion.

In 2013, they put out a five-song EP, Feels So Good, that captured their rough-and-tumble sound on vinyl. In 2015, the Record Company took their sound overseas as they toured Europe for the first time, and that same year the group landed a record deal with Concord Music Group. Their debut album, Give It Back to You, was released in February 2016. The single "Off the Ground" earned radio airplay, and the LP got a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Second album All of This Life was recorded at Boulevard Recording in Hollywood with the bandmembers themselves producing, and appeared in June 2018.

After lots more touring and popping up on TV and film soundtracks (their music was used in the movies Bad Moms and Live or Die in La Honda and on the television series Nashville, Seal Team, and Bloodline), the group returned to the studio to record their third album. Before they started on the big project, they took a creative detour and cut an EP, Side Project, that found them reinventing a handful of covers, including tunes by Willie Dixon, INXS, and Cypress Hill. The EP came out in June 2021, with the LP Play Loud, appearing four months later; it added more contemporary rock and blues touches to their music while still sounding fierce at heart.

Though Play Loud was well-received by reviewers and fans, Concord wasn't satisfied with its sales figures, and they dropped the Record Company from their roster, this while the group was wrestling with the negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on their touring and recording schedules. The band responded with 2023's The 4th Album, an LP that took their sound back to its essentials while adding a lean, funky accent to their rhythms. The 4th Album was the Record Company's first release under a new deal with Round Hill Records. /Biography by Mark Deming, AllMusic
