The Blues comes in various guises. It can be raw like an open wound or it can be smooth like molasses; this German band errs on the latter. Driven by guitarist and singer Marshall X, he’s backed by an old-school rhythm section. It’s polite rather than rude Blues. At times it reminds me of the Bluesy tracks on Dire Straits ‘On Every Street’; it’s that kind of blues. The production is very good, it’s got a warm feel, with a female backing singer to plump up choruses and although the guitars and vocals are naturally up-front and centre, the rhythm section is also as clear as a bell; each note and thrum audible. The songs too are tastefully arranged and varied. There’s a hint of the late great Willie De Ville on the Latin infused ‘Suckers Ballad’ and ‘Love Is Blind’. The breezy ‘Mainstreet Café’ has a laid back J.J. Cale groove while ‘The Pain Inside’ has MX making his guitar sing and cry in a way that you can easily imagine BB King covering this tune in his inimitable way. ‘Worn Out Shoes’ rather cheekily pinches the riff from Eric Clapton’s take on ‘Crossroads’. When the band do decide to Rock out as on the Texas grind of ‘Working On A Chain Gang’ it still does it within the speed limits, never really screeching those tyres.
‘Broke, Busted & Blue’ is a well-made, likable Blues Rock album that is best listened to while sipping on a single glass of a good whisky rather than a record that you’ll want to throw your head back a drain a cheap bottle of bourbon to. ~Duncan Jamieson
