Canadian music icon, Jeff Healey, was born in Toronto on March 25, 1966. Blind from early childhood due to retinoblastoma (a rare form of eye cancer), Jeff Healey’s guitar playing virtuosity and soulful voice saw him rise to prominence in the entertainment world in the late 1980s and ‘90s selling millions of albums worldwide.

Getting his first guitar at the age of three, he developed a unique style of playing. Placing the guitar flat on his lap, and playing it like a lap steel with his hands over the fret board, gave him the flexibility of fretting with all five fingers and the power of pulling notes with the strength of his whole hand.

For over two decades, Jeff enjoyed a successful music career that spanned rock, blues and traditional jazz. Grammy nominee and Juno award winner, he was a radio personality, a jazz historian and world famous record collector (owning a collection of 1920’s and ‘30’s jazz 78s that would ultimately top out at over 30,000 records).

With the Jeff Healey Band, he recorded five studio albums and contributed to the soundtrack of the cult classic film, Patrick Swayze’s Road House; a film in which Jeff and the band were featured prominently. Over the years, Jeff’s reputation as a player and a person led him to perform and record with such incredible luminaries as Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, John Mayall, Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, Lenny Kravitz, George Harrison, Mark Knopfler, Ian Gillan and many, many more.

The Jeff Healey Band - See The Light

Year: 1988
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 49:48
Size: 115,7 MB
Styles: Electric blues, blues-rock
Scans: Full

1. Confidence Man (3:14)
2. My Little Girl (3:10)
3. River Of No Return (3:34)
4. Don't Let Your Chance Go By (3:21)
5. Angel Eyes (5:21)
6. Nice Problem To Have (4:50)
7. Someday, Someway (3:29)
8. I Need To Be Loved (3:44)
9. Blue Jean Blues (5:39)
10. That's What They Say (4:28)
11. Hideaway (4:27)
12. See The Light (4:26)

Jeff Healey's debut album, See the Light, may be similar to Stevie Ray Vaughan's high-octane blues-rock, but in blues and blues-rock, it's often the little things that count, such as guitar styles, and there's no denying that Healey has a distinctive style. Healey plays his Stratocaster flat on his lap, allowing him to perform unusual long stretches that give his otherwise fairly predictable music real heart and unpredictability.

Throughout the album, his guitar work keeps things interesting, even on slow ballads like "Angel Eyes" (one of two John Hiatt songs, by the way, along with the ripping "Confidence Man"). That's what keeps See the Light interesting, and it's what makes it an intriguing, promising debut. Unfortunately, Healey has never quite fulfilled that promise, but it's still exciting to hear the first flowerings of his talent. /Thom Owens, AllMusic

15. See The Light (Live) (8:28)

Billed as a "companion" to the 2016 posthumous collection Heal My Soul, Holding On combines a full live concert from 1999 with five additional studio outtakes. According to Roger Costa, the compilation's producer, these five songs were left off of Heal My Soul "primarily because they didn't quite fit into the flow" and "they were too good not to share." They had been shared once before, on a limited-edition vinyl called Heal My Soul: Bonus Sessions, but the digital release is welcome because they're solid songs, highlighted by the charging "Love Takes Time," the hooky "Every Other Guy," and "All That I Believe," which feels a bit like a conscious re-write of Hootie & the Blowfish. All are nice additions to the Healey catalog and the concert is solid, too -- perhaps a little too pristine and polished, but still worthy for Healey heads. ~by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Kenny Wayne grew up in the midst of a sharp musical dichotomy, thanks to parents whose tastes were wildly divergent. His preacher father told him to stay on the straight and narrow path, and at all times to avoid "the Devil's music," a classification that included boogie-woogie. His mom, however, was thoroughly taken with everything about boogie-woogie. As a self-taught musician, it was all she could play. She especially favored Amos Milburn's "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer," while she also exposed her son to songs by Nat King Cole, Little Willie John, and Fats Domino. But when Wayne was old enough to start music lessons at age eight, he didn't get to start out playing his mom's music. Instead, the organist who played for his father's San Francisco church services became his first instructor. For a time, Wayne learned about reading music and how to play some classical pieces. It wasn't long, though, before Wayne convinced the organist to teach him how to play the livelier music that his mother knew how to play, and jumpin' notes of boogie-woogie were rolling through the sanctified air above the empty church pews. The piano player, who was born Kenneth Wayne Spruell, is frequently identified by his nickname, Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne. His parents relocated the family from his hometown of Spokane, Washington, to San Francisco not long after his birth in the 1940s. They settled in Los Angeles during the following decade, and in the '60s they headed to Compton, California. While he was growing up, Wayne drew inspiration from Gene Harris and his jazz ensemble, the Three Sounds. He also favored the works of artists such as George Shearing, Erroll Garner, Cal Tjader, and Mongo Santamaria. Wayne led his own band, an Afro-Cuban and jazz outfit called the Latin Jazz Prophets, during his teen years. More inspiration came from listening to the music of Ray Charles, Charles Brown, Floyd Dixon, Big Joe Turner, and Jimmy Reed, among others. During the '60s and '70s in Los Angeles, he frequently provided backup for artists in a variety of genres, including pop and rock. After touring with a Santana-like group, Wayne established an R&B band and went on the road, playing Canada, the mainland U.S., and Hawaii. Thanks to a warm welcome from Canadians during the '80s, Wayne set down roots in Vancouver, British Columbia. The CD Alive & Loose received a Juno Award nomination in 1997 in the category of Best Blues/Gospel Album. Another nomination came two years later for Blues Boss Boogie in the category of Best Blues Album. Wayne dedicated his debut album, Smile, to the two diverse early influences in his life, his preacher father and his boogie-woogie-lovin' mom. 2002 saw the release of 88th & Jump Street, followed by Blues Carry Me Home in 2003 and Let It Loose in 2005. Alive & Loose arrived in 2006, with Can't Stop Now appearing two years later in 2008. Signing with Stony Plain, Wayne released Old Rock on a Roll in 2011. A second Stony Plain release, Rollin' with the Blues Boss, showed up in 2014. ~ bio by Linda Seida

Eagle Records’ series of releases exploring the archives of the Jeff Healey Band continues with this live recording from The Bottom Line in New York City on 13 December 1988. This is an early show by the band following on from the release of their debut album “See The Light” on the Arista label a few months before. Several tracks from that album are included along with classic covers such as ZZ Top’s “Blue Jean Blues” and Cream’s “White Room”. Jeff Healey had a unique style and presence that was clearly already well developed at this early stage in his career.
