MCA Special Products' Rockin' the Blues features ten highlights from Little Milton's classic recordings for Chess Records. It's certainly not a definitive overview of his work by any means, but with such songs as "Grits Ain't Groceries," "If Walls Could Talk," "Just a Little Bit," "Let's Get Together," "Blind Man" and "Baby I Love You," it is certainly entertaining and may be worthwhile to curious and casual listeners on a tight budget. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Were there a definitive blues thesaurus, Little Milton Campbell would have at least two quotes listed: "Hey, hey, the blues is all right!" and "If I don't feel it, I don't do it!" Taking its title from the latter, Milton's 14th album for Malaco since 1983 shows why he belongs in the highest echelon of soul-blues singers and guitarists. He's especially expressive on ballads, showing the value of ardent devotion in "The Love of a Woman" and taking stock of betrayal in "You're Givin' Me the Blues." Milton shines on medium-tempo numbers, too, cutting to the emotional quick of the cheating cautionary tale "Born Yesterday," to name one. He knows what songs from his record label's stable of writers suit him to a tee, picking wrong just once with the cliché-ridden "Baby, Let Me Rock You." ~Frank-John Hadley

John Moony's first album release since 2006. This long awaited album is John's Tribute to Son House, who mentored John and show him much of his music first hand. This album contains some of the most authentic, masterful acoustic slide guitar playing that exists, which goes back to the source, Son House. Son House and John Mooney met in 1971, this friendship shaped their lives forever. Was it serendipity that brought Son and John together? I believe they were destined to meet. Son and Moon, this recording is about heritage. It’s what shapes and defines who we are. As the torch gets passed on, some of the flavors, wisdom, and attitude are inherited by the next generation. This tribute showcases the songs of Son House, and you will hear the indelible mark his musicality left on John. One might say that the Moon is out, but the Son never set.

“Mr Black & Blues” is the working name of Blues man, Michael Pollitt. A freak surfing accident, in which he broke his neck, resulted in him losing the use of his left hand. The doctors doubted he would be able to play guitar again, but, through persistence, he slowly recovered and the playing of music, greatly assisted in his recuperation.

This album is a tribute, as much to the courage and determination shown by Michael, as to his musical ambitions. Recorded in London’s famed Toerag Studios, this selection features Michael accompanied by some of London’s finest Blues/Roots musicians, all live in the room. The songs are Michael’s, although inspired by such Blues greats as Blind Willie Johnson, Josh White, as well as Bob Dylan and Taj Mahal.

Founded in the badlands of South Surrey in 1978 by lead singer / blues harp whiz Mud Bay Slim (a.k.a. Harold Arnold), the band’s hard-edged, high-voltage approach immediately distinguished them in the Vancouver R&B scene. And throughout the years they have steadfastly maintained their distinctive style, playing the blues their way: unconventionally, uncompromisingly and unapologetically. The album features horns by Dave and Norm Quinn and a track arranged and played by Boney Fields, funky horn man now living in France.

A discerning listen to their 2007 CD release, Death, Taxes and the Mud Bay Blues Band (Three Things That Won‘t Go Away) reveals influences spanning the depth and breadth of the idiom informing their original compositions--classic Chicago blues, country blues, zydeco, barrelhouse, boogie… Widely disparate elements somehow find space inside their unique sound, all interpreted and incorporated the Mud Bay way.

For 35 years (and counting) the Mud Bay Blues Band has been electrifying audiences with their eclectic and original style of Rhythm and Blues. Surviving more than their share of trials and tribulations along the way, they have earned a well-deserved reputation as “The Band That Won’t Go Away”–much to the delight of their devoted fans.

This ain’t your average blues band.

Founded in the wilds of South Surrey way back in 1978 by lead singer / blues harp master Mud Bay Slim (a.k.a. Harold Arnold), the band’s hard-edged, high-voltage, in-your-face approach–which they dubbed “Neo-Yardbirdism”–immediately distinguished them from their more conservative counterparts in the Vancouver R&B scene. Throughout the years they have forged a distinctive style, playing the blues their way: uncompromisingly unconventionally, no apologies for liberties taken.

A spin through their 2007 album, “Death, Taxes and the Mud Bay Blues Band (Three Things That Won‘t Go Away)” reveals the diverse influences informing their sound: classic Chicago blues, country, zydeco, barrel-house boogie … And on their follow-up album, “Mudified” (released in 2009) the band continued and expanded this trend, with 100% original compositions featuring a wealth of styles finding common ground inside the songs, all interpreted and incorporated the Mud Bay way.

Through mishaps and misfortunes (including the untimely deaths of guitarists James Lougheed and Peter Draper) the Mud Bay Blues Band has persevered, turning adversity into opportunity and letting hardships nurture creativity. Now with more than three decades of dues paid, they have earned respect and praise from such blues legends as James Cotton (“Just like playing with family”) and the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn (“Mud Bay…? More fun!”)

The Mud Bay Blues Band, featuring “Legend In His Spare Time” Mud Bay Slim (“King of the Mud Bay Delta Blues”) and his long time cohorts, Murphy Farrell (drums), Mark Branscombe (guitar), Randall T. Carpenter (guitar, steel guitar, mandolin) and Bob “Beaudine” Petterson (bass), do it their own way. Always have, always will.

This definitely ain’t your average blues band.

I first heard the Blues in the spring of 1973 when I was 12 years old and under the constant influence of my elder brother Gunnar's keen interest in jazz. Together, we recorded jazz shows from the Norwegian State Radio (NRK) on our sister's mono cassette deck that she'd received as a confirmation gift, and thanks to my brother and I - she never saw again! For that I owe an eternal debt of gratitude to my sister Tone who actually was the rightful owner of my first audio hardware. Music was something that has touched me as long as I can remember. Of course, I liked a lot of normal kid stuff, and I loved fishing, but music was my #1 love. I remember tricking my parents - staying awake until 11pm to record "Jazzklubben" on the Norwegian Broadcasting; Miles Davis; Michal Urbaniak and John McLaughlin were among names that hit my uppermost bodypart. Jazz was exciting and groovy, but I didn't grasp the concept 100 %.

By 1973, radio receivers were getting sophisticated enough to locate Swedish radio programs and by accident one fateful Wednesday evening, I turned on our Tandberg stereo during 'Aftonblues' (Blues After Hours), a half hour blues show on Sweden's channel 3. I was totally blown away by the music, and together with Gunnar, I started a 4 year tradition - recording all 'Aftonblues' and 'Mera Blues' radio shows (which alternated every second week)! Blues became my music; the same kind of energy that I felt listening to jazz music, but simpler, sweeter and to my ears, far more poetic. At 12 years of age I became a complete and total fan of the blues - blues was pain and relief, it expressed both the lamb on the sacrificial table as well as the downward motion of the sacrificial knife. It was fiery, passionate music, dark red and bloody – in short: to me blues was "life" and so, barely out of my childhood years of innocence, I was already determined to live my life steeped in the blues!

The songs you hear on this album were among the very first songs I learned. Most of them I were either introduced to me by 'Afton Blues' or 'Mera Blues', and a couple I learned from my guitar teacher Joe Vey. Some are, in my opinion, among the best blues ever recorded. Of course I did play a few George Harrison and David Bowie tunes, who were immensely popular at that time, but blues was my main focus – and to my ears, pre-war blues were the cream of the crop. This album contains 12 songs from my 1973 late night radio rambles – plus one bonus track: “Blinded By Love”, learned from Dr. John while touring with him 10 years later.

The legendary pioneer of the Chicago blues scene has just turned 79, but he is still one of the most exhilarating guitarists in the world, and still in powerful voice. Born in Louisiana, he moved north to be influenced by Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, and developed a passionate, driving guitar style that made him a hero for blues-rockers from Eric Clapton to Jimmy Page. It’s no surprise that the guests here include ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, who joins him on the stomping Wear You Out, and Van Morrison, who sings on the poignant Flesh & Bone, a tribute to the late BB King. He may be surrounded by famous friends, but Guy dominates every song, from the upbeat Thick Like Mississippi Mud to the thoughtful lament, Come Back Muddy. Guy once explained that Muddy Waters’ final request to him was “keep the damn blues alive”. He’s still doing just that.

Talk about having some big shoes to fill. There's some question as to whether it's really a good thing to be the son of Muddy Waters, the legend, one of the founding fathers of Chicago blues, et cetera. One listen to "The Same Thing" of Big Bill Morganfield's impressively solid debut, though, and all questions are answered. Morganfield's guitar playing is the sort that defines a genre; listening to the foot-stomping "I Just Keep Lovin' Her" or the rollicking "Dead Ass Broke," one gets the sense that this is the blues of the highest order. No frills, no pretension, just straight-ahead, rock-solid blues, with a skill on the guitar that makes the difficult sound easy and a voice that growls and hollers with equal ease.

There's not a single weak moment on this album, not a note that sounds anything less than perfect. By the time the album closes with the title track, don't be surprised to see smoke coming out of the CD player. It remains to be seen whether Morganfield will be as influential in the blues world as his father, but his talent and skill as a musician are unquestionable. /Genevieve Williams, Amazon

Ranging from a couple swinging pieces and some lowdown Muddy Waters-type blues to two strong appearances by Taj Mahal, this is a release that never lets up. Mr. B's piano solos are a major joy, the harmonica playing (by Bill Lupkin, Billy Branch, and Paul Oscher) is excellent, Morganfield's expressive vocals always hit their mark, and the music is quite enjoyable. Highly recommended. /Scott Yanow, AllMusic

Hubert Sumlin - 2 albums: About Them Shoes/I'm The Back Door Man

12. Walkin' Thru The Park (3:30)

The bedrock of Hubert Sumlin's career was a two-decade stint in Chicago with the great Howlin' Wolf, where he was responsible for the searing guitar lines on monumental tunes such as "Smokestack Lightning", "Back Door Man" and "The Red Rooster". Following a certain amount of physical tension with the Wolf, Sumlin briefly defected to the Muddy Waters band. It's that period which informs this new recording, with most of its tunes penned either by Waters himself, or Chess Records' renaissance man Willie Dixon. There's certainly no shortage of guitars here, with old Muddy sideman Bob Margolin partnering Sumlin's lead licks on most tracks. So often, when an old bluesman makes a new album, he's joined by a stellar cast of rock acolytes, paying their respects. This album is no exception, with Eric Clapton and Keith Richards joining in on the first two cuts. The Stones guitarist is at his earthiest on "Still A Fool", taken at a slugging pace, with a deep-feel, clumping beat.

James Cotton (another Muddy man) blows harmonica on "She's Into Something", and The Band's Levon Helm drums on most of the songs. Other numbers feature a blurry rotation of singers, with Sumlin himself saving his lone contribution until the closing "This Is The End". Frail and cracked though his voice may be, it would have been nice to hear Hubert take the lead vocals more often. David Johansen's two contributions are the most successful, with the former New York Dolls singer diving nearly as deep as Muddy Waters himself. Sumlin's solos chop between drenching bursts and carefully-picked phrases, and the overall mood is one of cultured grooving rather than wild abandon, infused with a very natural, organic tone. /Martin Longley

Unnecessary? Perhaps. Fascinating? Perhaps.

I saw Dizzy Gillespie play in one of the last concerts of his life; I saw R.E.M. in the MIT gym on their Fables of the Preconstruction tour; I was even there at the Apollo for “Rapmania” in 1989 when the crowd booed L.L. Cool J and cheered Third Bass. But by far the coolest concert I ever attended was seeing Boozoo Chavis and Beau Jocques in a battle of the zydeco bands at the Rock’N'Bowl in New Orleans. Just to see these two legends of modern Cajun music, with their whipcrack bands and their huge ornate accordions and their love of entertaining—and to see them BOTH in one night—it was a religious thing.

But Beau Jocques died in 1999, and Boozoo passed last May. These two charismatic zydeco ambassadors were hugely important, and their deaths hit Looziana pretty hard. Fortunately, a couple of big stars have risen to the occasion. Buckwheat Zydeco released two albums in 2001 to fill the gap, and is dropping another in February. But this album under consideration was clearly the most significant zydeco release of 2001, especially considering its source, perpetual underachiever Terrance Simien.

Simien, whom most people know from his appearance in the Dennis Quaid/Ellen Barkin “movie” The Big Easy, is the perennial “next big thing that never was” of zydeco music. He’s got a voice from God, an easy hippie-fied stage presence, and a smooth-fingered way with his accordion; but he also has a six-year hole in his recording career, and has not been nearly the relentless road demon that Buckwheat Zydeco has proven himself to be. Everyone outside his dedicated group of “Beadheads” had kind of given up hope in Terrance really ever breaking through…until this record hit the decks.

Quite simply, The Tribute Sessions is completely unnecessary. What it is is a 69-minute disc where Terrance Simien takes us through his musical influences, including Cajun vets like Rockin’ Dopsie and Clifton Chenier as well as other musical giants like Sam Cooke and Bob Marley. In between sweet bayou-flavored cover versions of songs by these artists, Simien just talks, telling how he came to know these artists, why he loves them so, and sometimes relating personal anecdotes about those that he’s met along the road. This would be pretty crucial if selected by Bob Dylan or James Brown or Prince—hell, even Madonna would benefit from this approach, as it might remind her why she wanted to make music in the first place. But Terrance Simien? A guy who has only released three previous albums? Who needs this?

Well, also quite simply, you do. The Tribute Sessions shows Terrance Simien to be a charming and talented fellow who started out as a music fan just like the rest of us. He talks about hearing Rockin’ Sidney’s “My Toot Toot” on Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 and you can feel the delight in his voice; I actually chuckled at his story about laying down under a truck with Canray Fontenot to escape the blistering heat of the Zydeco Music Festival in Plaisance, Louisiana; and it’s touching to hear his eulogy for Beau Jocques: “I told the guys and they all felt the same, this real empty unbelievable sort of feeling”. Then they launch into a jumpy funky version of “Yesterday” that nails the whole call-and-response rock and roll feel of Beau Jocques and the Zydeco Hi-Rollers—still the tightest band I’ve ever heard—perfectly. A great approach to talking about your heroes . . . and a really wonderful tribute to a great American artist who should have sold more albums than Limp Bizkit.

The most fascinating part of these reminiscences are ones you wouldn’t expect. The image of the young Terrance Simien running around as a child singing “Bring It on Home to Me” is pretty hilarious: “I used to try so hard to sound like Sam Cooke, and you can only imagine how much I didn’t sound like Sam Cooke, being nine, 10 years old”. And then Simien goes and pulls off one of the greatest Sam Cooke impressions this side of the young Rod Stewart in a sexy version of “Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day”. And the revelation that the Band is Simien’s favorite band ever, and that his greatest musical compliment was getting to meet and record with Rick Danko, would mean nothing if he didn’t prove it by pulling off a gorgeous six-and-a-half minute version of “It Makes No Difference”, with elegaic accordion work and soaring harmony vocals by longtime collaborator and co-producer Danny Williams.

So so what if Terrance Simien hasn’t really paid enough dues to do this record? It’s still one of the best things you’re ever going to hear. Not only is it a great window into the soul of a very talented man, it also shows the depth and range and gypsy spirit of a man who just might be the Next Big Thing after all. I only hope that that comes to pass—Simien is too good to be an underappreciated cult figure. We need him more than that. This disc is a kick-ass first step. ~by Matt Cibula

The title doesn't lie; Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee may share equal billing on this reissue, but they do so separately, with separate bands from separate mid-'70s recording dates. Both of the sessions on Going It Alone found the respective "loners" striving for more of an ensemble sound, with Terry fronting an acoustic trio rounded out by guitarist Bob Malenky and pianist Michael Rura, and McGhee opting for an electric combo that included guitarist Louisiana Red and harp blower Sugar Blue. The results are enjoyable but uneven, mainly due to the tentative chemistry between the frontmen and their individual sidemen. McGhee's combo seems to gel better than Terry's, which is no surprise considering Terry's more irregular sense of timing; perhaps another factor was that most of the songs in Terry's set were written by Malenky and producer Kent Cooper, whereas McGhee stuck to his own material. Despite the hit-or-miss quality of these informal sessions, Terry and McGhee still come off as masters of their craft. It might not be as strong as classic Terry & McGhee material, but Going It Alone gives a compelling glimpse of how two former partners had to cope without each other. ~Ken Chang

I started playing the guitar when I was nine years old. I actually wanted to play the banjo, but couldn't find a teacher in rural Hertfordshire so I started guitar lessons with the intention of switching to the banjo at a later date. Shortly after starting to play a neighbour introduced me to the Blues, and B.B King in particular. I still haven't quite got round to learning the banjo...

My style and music is influenced by the greats of the blues, funk, folk and beyond, and after years of playing many gigs in many styles, with many different bands and people, I was inspired by a three month stay in New Orleans to go out on my own, or at least under my own name, and pursue my own style and sound.

It's been a great few years, and I've been lucky enough to have supported the great Joan Armatrading on her two most recent tours, as well as Robert Cray, Jon Gomm, Matt Schofield, Wilko Johnson, Royal Southern Brotherhood, Stefan Grossman and Ian McCullogh. I've also recently shared the bill with Gordon Giltrap, John Etheridge, Paul Brett, Gareth Pearson and 'Tubular Bells' producer Tom Newman.

Sam Cockrell - 2 albums: Blues Vol 1 / Blues Vol 2

Born in 1959, Cockrell grew up listening to the music of his time and cites diverse influences like Grand Funk Railroad, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, Yes, The Doobie Brothers and the Motown sound. As a child he saw the Jackson 5 and decided he wanted to play the bass, which has been his instrument ever since.

Sam's band, The Groove, consists of guitar player Chris Forte, Saxophone player Howard Shaw and long time friend and drummer Rob Davis. These guys are full of energy and fun to watch. They play music that is geared to getting the crowd up and dancing. They cover a variety of genres and are just as comfortable playing R&B, pop, motown, rock and dance music as they are straight ahead blues - and they can do them all with style and aplomb. Variety is the bands specialty, and they play what the audience wants to hear. Sam's trained voice also lends itself easily to just about any style of music, not being limited to just the blues. He has a clear, strong, confident voice, and when you combine that with his exciting bass playing and crowd pleasing good nature you get one great performer. ~Ray Stiles

Es-o-ter-ic (adj) Designed for or understood by the specially initiated alone. In this case, that would be music lovers who have been washed in the waters of Rock and Roll infused with deep rooted Gospel Blues. Step back Non - Believers, this is as good as it gets!

Released March 1, 2012 on Domino Records, Bobby Whitlock and CoCo Carmel have reached a new summit of excellence on this record. Their unique blend (for readers who are unfortunately unfamiliar with their duo) defies comparison. It would take some ridiculous fantasy like Ray Charles joins Tina Turner and Bobby Keys performing Irish poetry - to even begin to describe what this record encompasses. The instrumentation, production and mixing is nice and tight. It is no secret that Whitlock's vocals are some of the all-time best, with his all- powerful keyboards and Coco's big league howlin' sax puts their sound in rarified air, indeed! There is guitar work galore that is diverse, stylish and sublime. All along, the band's rhythm section keeps the whole thing rollin' like the Mighty Mississippi.

The magic all comes together in the Songs. Whitlock's songs are sophisticated musical journeys that take unexpected twists and turns --somehow always fitting perfectly. The lyrics and melodies are "one in the same" with each word playing the note. Bobby and Coco paint pictures that transport listeners to places we've all been --the themes are life's constant companions: Loving, losing, moving on and coming home. But in every track, they evoke the ambiguity that makes those emotions all run together. If you are not sweating or on your knees (probably both) after the first three tracks and "John the Revelator" then turn up the volume and start over to hear what you missed.

This CD is a collection treasure with Bobby and Coco supporting each other vocally , instrumentally and emotionally. Whitlock's "Roll On" has the qualities to make it a personal favorite like Bobby Charles', "Tennessee Blues" or Donnie Fritts', "We had it all". CoCo's vocals and sax on "Nobody Knows", somehow finds a groove that is down and dirty while exquisite at the same time. By the time you get to the last track, "Changing Faces", open the back door because you'll need a cool breeze. ~Linda & Dick Thompson

This album is defined by the seminal and incalculable influence that Muddy's music has had on all popular forms of American music, an influence that would revolutionize music around the world.

Country blues were Muddy’s roots and remained at his core, but through the force of his artistry he transformed them. With electricity, volume, the weaving of bass and guitar lines with piano, harmonica and drums, he created the ensemble sound and subsequently the template for future Rock and Pop groups. His music’s raw power and energy, plus his attitude and magnetism—Muddy was the prototype for the iconic Rock‘n Roll star—are still the major ingredients that inspire the popular music we listen to today.

From the 1940s through the 1950s, Muddy’s blues were evolving. This evolution and innovation are the guiding principles and driving force of MUDDY WATERS 100. This tribute reflects a deep respect for tradition—with the participation of alumni of Muddy Waters' groups—and also puts an emphasis on the future of the blues through the participation of pre-eminent contemporary artists who have embraced this music and given it its future.

Rec. August 6, 1976 at Sam Chatmon's home in Hollandale, MS.

Sam was born in Bolton, Mississippi, on January 10, 1899 (some sources say 1897, but his grave and his comments on The New Mississippi Sheiks album say 1899) on John Gettis's plantation near Jackson. Chatmon's family was well-known in Mississippi for their musical talents. His father Henderson Chatmon, a native of Terry, Mississippi, was an ex-slave who played the fiddle for square dances. He lived to be 105 years old and had nine sons and two daughters, all of whom seemed to have his musical ability. Chatmon's mother played the guitar.

Chatmon became interested in the guitar at the age of six, taking it down off the wall to play while his family worked in the fields and replacing it before they came home. His famous older brothers (Sam was the ninth child) Lonnie Chatmon and Bo (Armentor Chatmon) Carter performed with Walter Vinson as the Mississippi Sheiks. Sam became a member of the family's string band at a young age. The family played, according to Robert Palmer, ballads, ragtime, spirituals, popular Tin Pan Alley songs and country dance music. At the end of World War I, the Chatmon brothers formed a string band, perferring to play blues and waltzes on a regular basis for white audiences in the 1920's because it paid better. Sam also played with the Mississippi Sheiks occasionally.

In 1928 the Chatmons moved to the Delta to a town named Hollandale. The band disbanded in 1935, but in 1936 Sam and Lonnie Chatmon recorded twelve duets for Bluebird. After the death of his brothers, Sam Chatmon became part of the New Mississippi Sheiks and played with Walter Vinson, Carl Martin, and Ted Bogan. Sam did not record during the 1940's. Instead he worked on area plantations around Hollandale. He was rediscovered in 1960 by Ken Swerilas, who talked Sam into performing again. Sam Chatmon became known primarily then as a folk blues artist. He recorded on the Arhoolie label and later with others.

Jimmy Dillon - 2 albums: Everything / Rituals

San Francisco Bay area guitarist Jimmy Dillon is an accomplished and award-winning musician, singer, songsmith and teacher with an impressive record. Jimmy has backed up the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Sting and John Lee Hooker (who he recorded a duet with). He has appeared on stage with B.B. King, Carlos Santana and Bonnie Raitt, among many others before embarking on a solo career and recording 4 CDs to date. A quick listen to just a small sampling of his repertoire reveals an eclectic mix of blues, rock, country and Latin styles.

Jimmy is also a passionate guitar teacher with a series of DVD and online lessons for acoustic, electric, blues and slide guitar. He spends his summers teaching kids how to play rock and roll at Blue Star Music Camps in Michigan and San Francisco and gives online lessons as well. Jimmy offers the following advice to aspiring guitarists who are struggling to learn: “Don’t struggle too much. Have fun with it. Get with some better players and listen as much as you play. Remember the 4 T’s – Touch,Tone, Time and Taste. Play with finesse, passion and melodic sense. Don’t worry too much about speed, scales, shreding. Rather, make it count. Be a good rhythm player. ‘Lead guitar’ is so overdone.”

Both Miki Nervio and The Bluesmakers deeply know all blues elements that come from the end of the twenties and thirties. Pre-war and Delta blues have no secrets for them, because they are totally engaged with that kind of music and they give an exquisite handling to every song they perform. These musicians come from Galicia and do an acoustic repertoire, the old time songbook, with passion, reverence, commitment and elegant arrangements that follow very aesthetical patterns. Miki Nervio & The Bluesmakers come to perpetuate a musical genre that has almost disappeared in the actual blues scene, except some other few and rare collectors. But the good taste, the excellent display, the swing and feeling these musicians give to the music they perform is over the standard average of other artists who try to do it but sometimes they do not succeed and become a little bit boring. This is not the case of Miki Nervio and The Bluesmakers. I am surprised they have not yet been booked by the various blues festivals in Spain and I find hard to believe there still are promoters who have not yet realized the band qualities. In short words, this is an excellent well conceived album with a splendid development and final result. Congratulations fellows! GREAT. ~Vicente Zumel. “La Hora del blues”

Miki Nervio and the Bluesmakers" is the reference point of acoustic blues in Spain. We make what we call "rural blues", influenced by the great bluesmen of the 20's and 30's, but with a mixture of later blues, early swing bands, New Orleans, western-swing, jug bands, gospel, ragtime...

Welsh singer-songwriter Jodie Marie has announced details of her second album ‘Trouble in Mind’, the follow up to 2012’s critically acclaimed ‘Mountain Echo’. Plucked from obscurity at 16, and writing and recording with some of the greats of modern songwriting on debut album ‘Mountain Echo’ showcased a unique voice to the world. Tours, TV appearances and radio plays followed, but when the dust settled, Jodie Marie took a step forwards – electing to write the bulk of her new album in isolation, in her home of Wales, and in a provincial cottage in France. She lived a little. Looked inside herself, and reflected this in the brilliant new collection of songs ‘Trouble in Mind’.

“It really felt like I was creating my own sound by doing that.” Explains Jodie “It was really refreshing to record in my home county, at StudiOwz Studio, Pembrokeshire, I felt like I had all the time in the world to make it” often leading to late night lock-in sessions with days spent “walking in the countryside, or going to the coast. It was a really natural way of recording, especially as we recorded it mostly live, I wanted it to come across like a live gig, but also like a classic recorded studio album.”

There’s a truth, a grit to songs like the one take ‘Trouble In Mind’ and but also the rousing ‘Later than you Think’ and lead single ‘Only One I’m Thinking Of’ “My parents brought me up on blues records and I have a big connection with that sound, the way it was recorded, and the feel of it – like they’re really singing from the heart.”

Whether exuberant, or bittersweet – there’s always an internalization, a thread running throughout this accomplished and coherent work “I guess that’s why the album is called Trouble In Mind – even when things are going really well with me, there’s always that voice in the back of my mind causing me trouble in one way or another.” With this album sounding at once classic and ageless, and also a glimpse into a 24 year old’s hopes and fears in this high pressure era, ‘Trouble in Mind’ is a compelling album – and a rarity in today’s short attention spanned focused music industry – one that will reward the listener for years to come.

Little Bill & The Blue Notes - Down For Double

While the Blue Notes might be either musical sounds or bandmembers, the Little Bill in this case is Bill Englehart, also known as Washington's "Ambassador of Bass Guitar." His style ranges from the type of slide guitar pieces associated with early country blues to sophisticated, romantic R&B balladry. Englehart has had a long stretch to develop these concepts, having kept a group together under the name of Little Bill & the Blue Notes since 1956. Prior to that, it was the 1955 Tacoma Blue Notes, pinning down the exact part of Washington a bit more precisely. Younger players who have towered over Little Bill on the bandstand include an organist, Dick Powell, who is of no relation to the movie matinee idol of old; guitarist Billy Stapleton; and drummer Tommy Morgan. /Eugene Chadbourne, AllMusic

Milton Campbell was a blues chameleon in his early recording career for Sun and Bobbin, changing styles seemingly with every record he made. But he found his groove -- a Bobby Bland-style R&B with a bluesy edge to it -- when he came to Chess Records in 1963.

These 16 tracks collect the highlights of his six-year tenure at the label, featuring the hits "We're Gonna Make It," "Who's Cheating Who?" and "If Walls Could Talk." The majority of the sides feature strong horn charts courtesy of Oliver Sain and Gene Barge, the core of Milton's sound during this period. The stylistic connection of Milton to Bland is no more stronger evidenced than on his cover of "Blind Man," but equal mention in the soulful department must go to the heart-wrenching ballad "Let Me Down Easy" and "Poor Man's Song," one of two songs collected here that Campbell had a hand in writing. Interesting updates of Little Willie John's "All Around the World" ("Grits Ain't Groceries"), Chuck Willis' "I Feel So Bad" and Rosco Gordon's "Just a Little Bit" complete the package. As part of MCA's Chess 50th Anniversary Series, this sweats the two-disc Welcome to the Club: The Essential Chess Recordings down to a perfect introductory package to this sometimes misunderstood (is he blues? soul? R&B?) artist. /Cub Koda, AllMusic
