Willie Cobbs will always be remembered for his mega Blues hit, "You Don't Love Me". The immortal Blues Classic has been recorded by everyone from John Mayall, Magic Sam, Ike & Tina, Otis Rush, Junior Wells to the Allman Brothers. Even Beyonce and Rihanna have recorded versions.
For almost 60 years he has been recording singles and albums. His 1994 classic, "Down To Earth" on Rooster Records proved he was much more than a one hit wonder.
It's been 18 years since his last album and the 87 year old insisted it be recorded the way he wanted. Backed by members of the Hi Rhythm Section band, his new album 'Butler Boy Blues' has him at his best.
As Willie said.... "I may be 87 years old but I want people to know I ain't dead yet.... I can still play and sing"!!

The only CD widely available by the Arkansas harpist whose chief claim to blues fame resides with his classic composition "You Don't Love Me" (later revived by Junior Wells and the Allman Brothers, among many others). With tasty backing by labelmates Johnny Rawls and L.C. Luckett adding luster to Cobbs's sturdy vocals and harp, the disc is a strong reminder that blues is alive and well in its southern birthplace. And yes, there's an accurate remake of his hit (segued with another of his gems, "Hey Little Girl"). ~by Bill Dahl

In 1956 truck driver and musician Slim Wallace purchased a used Magnacorder recording machine and set up a little studio in his garage on Fernwood Street in Memphis. A year later, Fernwood Records was born, and for a decade or so the label (and studio) turned out some of the best early rock & roll and rockabilly around, and some pretty amazing R&B, as well, as this collection shows. The 32 tracks here are a complete delight, ranging from ragged Memphis soul pieces to deep gospel shouters, and that they exist at all is somewhat of a miracle, since all of Fernwood's masters are rumored to have been destroyed in the late '60s. Most of these tracks never saw anything past regional release, which is a shame because there is an awful lot to like here, including the wonderful "Down in the Alley" by the Lyrics, the funky and elegant "Now It's Alright" by Earl Forest, "Boogie Chilluns Playhouse" (complete with a greasy Stax groove) by Donnie Williams, two hard gospel soul pieces ("Everybody Ought to Serve the Lord" and "Going Home to Jesus") by Prophet G. Lusk, and the weird carnival teen pop of Barbara Perry's "Bobby Is a Bad Bad Boy." Transfers for this disc were probably made from vinyl sources (if the rumor about Fernwood's master tapes is true), but the sound quality is fine, and the joy and energy on display here are more than worth the price of admission. Not bad for a little garage on Fernwood Street, and it reaffirms Memphis as the epicenter of the Big Bang that was rock & roll soul. ~Steve Leggett

The many record labels that came out of Memphis, Tennessee have mostly been well documented over the years. There has been one glaring omission and that is the Home Of The Blues record label that existed from 1960 through to 1962. In that short time the company issued approximately forty singles. The label grew out of Ruben Cherry's Home Of The Blues record store on Beale Street. Most of the recordings were made at Royal Studios and Willie Mitchell joined HOTB as house musician and producer. He recorded three singles for the label under his own name. Big names who recorded for HOTB included Roy Brown and the '5' Royales, both after their lengthy stints at King Records, and Larry Birdsong.

Willie Cobbs - Jukin'

03. Feeling Good (3:28)
04. Mean Old World (3:25)
05. Poison Ivy (3:11)

08. You're So Fine (2:56)
09. Please Send Me Someone To Love (4:24)
10. I Don't Know (3:37)

This Bullseye release from blues harpist Willie Cobbs puts his unmistakable Memphis soul mixed with Mississippi delta hybrid into action. Jukin' (not to be confused with Little Walter's Juke) succeeds as Cobbs mission statement to keep soul-blues alive as a vital part of the musical landscape into the new millennium. Cobbs voice is similar to Little Walter and much like his harmonica playing: gritty, and seasoned. Versions of "Reconsider Baby," "You're So Fine," "Mean Old World," and "Please Send Me Someone to Love" are combined with tight horn arrangements and consistently engaging guitar and organ work. ~Review by Al Campbell
