Every industry has its own subset of jargon, and the music industry is no exception. At first glance, laymen may not know what “CRM,” “mechanical royalties” or “creative commons” are. (Yours truly had to look them up on an Australian website that had a glossary of such words.) Another term that’s more common is “niche market”, which applies to a whole range of businesses. To put it simply, ESPN is for sports enthusiasts; the Lifetime channel is geared toward women, and the West African Blues Project is aimed at people who like this type of music.

Featuring Senegalese vocalist Modou Touré and Ramon Goose, it presents a broad range of West African melodies fused with blues, which may not appeal to all fans. If they’re looking for American-style stomps and boogies, they shouldn’t look here. However, if their search encompasses blues from around the world, with truly native influences, they’ve found gold.

This CD, made in Austria via a Canadian production company, consists of eleven original songs sung in Wolof, Mandinka (two languages spoken in the African country of Senegal) and French. Modou Touré inherited his incredible vocal prowess from his father, Ousmane Touré, who sang for a time with the band Touré Kunda. Collectively, they were noted for popularizing Senegalese world music, performing and singing in six languages during a career that spanned thirty years. They even collaborated with American bands Carlos Santana and Talking Heads. British guitar maestro Ramon Goose has toured with Louisiana blues legend Chris Thomas King, James Brown’s saxophonist Alfred “Pee Wee” Ellis, Eric Bibb and harpist Charlie Musselwhite.

Performing along with Modou Touré on vocals and Ramon Goose on acoustic, electric and slide guitar are Malcolm Miles on saxophone, Ákos Hasznos on electric and double bass, Eric Ford on drums, Abdoulaye Samb on guitar, Joe Goose on electric bass, Diabel Cissokho on kora, Ed Van Der Mark on electric bass, Tim Hillsdon on drums, and Papa Omar on percussion. ~Rainey Wetnight

Like hardly another musical style, the Blues has developed from its origins as music of the Black population of North America into a universal musical means of expression for musicians all over the world.

An impressive representative of the younger generation of Blues is the British guitarist and singer/songwriter Ramon Goose, born in 1977. With "Blues and Spirituals", Goose, who especially became well known around the turn of the century with his band NuBlues, is now presenting a solo album that brings together the entire musical range and fascination of this music. The album with its 12 titles offers traditional numbers and several of Ramon's own songs, some of them recorded purely soloistically and others groovy and full of drive, supported by the bass, drums, piano and backing vocals of his musician friends. Ramon starts with an homage to Blind Blake, with whose "Police Dog Blues" he records the earthy sound of the Delta Blues; he then lends the right soul to "I Want Jesus To Walk With Me" with wonderful pickings, gentle slides and a voice full of feeling.

Whether jazzy and funky as in "Take Me Out The City" or with groovy slide sounds as in "Going Home“, with prancing Ragtime as in "Angelina" and Robert Johnson's "Kind Hearted Woman", with which he leads us right into a smoky blues cellar with his band – Ramon Goose shows nearly all the facets of the Blues – and he masters them all.

Whether performing as an acoustic blues/gospel trio or as an electric blues band Ramon Goose strives to bring both sophistication and soul to his music. Ramon Goose was born in England and started out with British band Nublues as guitarist, chief song writer and producer. The band has sold over 10,000 copies worldwide of the debut album "Dreams Of A Blues Man" (released on Dixiefrog Records in Europe, 21st Century Blues Records in New Orleans, USA and published by Metisse Music) and has toured all over Europe with the likes of Eric Burdon, The Blind Boys of Alabama and and performed with James Brown’s bandleader Pee Wee Ellis. After a short stint with American bluesman Eric Bibb’s band, Ramon went on to produce, perform on and co-write critically acclaimed albums for Boo Boo Davis (Mississippi Blues artist) and Billy Jones (based in Arkansas) both on the Black and Tan Records label. Recent projects have included performing alongside Hilaire Chaby-Hary (Baaba Mal) & other West African Musicans.

Uptown Blues is the latest album from Ramon Goose. This singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer is extremely talented and it shines through on this album. Uptown Blues is filled with colorful dynamic and variation.

The album starts out with an upbeat tune called “Delta Moon.” The catchy vocals, solid guitar, and laid-back horns in the background, make for a gripping start to the album. Slowing it down in the middle of the album, Ramon shows a soft and sultry style of blues in a song called “Taste of Honey.” The piano and saxophone in the song show a bit of a jazz influence.

Among all of Ramon’s talents, the one that shines the most is his guitar playing. The song “Testify” is an instrumental blues that starts out with a high-energy guitar riff and leads into a guitar solo. The entire song is about Ramon’s guitar playing and it is really outstanding. Throughout entire song, the guitar wails and even though there are no vocals, the guitar speaks for itself.

Uptown Blues is a promising album and it is clear that Ramon’s strong suit and passion is in his guitar playing.
