From protégé to torchbearer, Joe Bonamassa honours his hero B.B. King with the release of B.B. King’s Blues Summit 100. The expansive 32-song tribute starring 40+ special guests was curated and produced by Joe Bonamassa in celebration of B.B. King’s 100th birthday. Released via Bonamassa’s KTBA Records, the album arrives as the culmination of a months-long rollout before revealing the full scope of King’s enduring influence. The idea for the project emerged when Bonamassa realized that, despite King’s towering stature, no definitive musical tribute was taking shape around the centennial. “What we figured out was that nobody was really doing a tribute record to him,” Bonamassa explains. “It wasn’t really on anyone’s radar. So in January of 2025, we decided to start the B.B. King Blues Summit 100 album.”

At the center of the completed album is the long-anticipated recording of “The Thrill Is Gone,” featuring Eric Clapton and Chaka Khan. One of the most iconic recordings in the blues canon, the song represented both an opportunity and a responsibility. From the outset, Bonamassa and co-producer Josh Smith approached the track with a singular focus: honor the weight of the original by giving the artists the space, support, and trust to deliver it honestly. “You can’t do a B.B. King tribute record and not do ‘The Thrill Is Gone,’” Bonamassa says. “It’s such an iconic song, and it’s a big ask.” When it came time to record it, there was no room for compromise. “For Eric Clapton and Chaka Khan doing ‘The Thrill Is Gone,’ we used real strings, real horns. The budget was whatever it cost, because you only get one chance to do this correctly. And I think we nailed it.”

That philosophy guided the project as a whole. With more than 50 artists contributing across 32 tracks, the production process could easily have become unwieldy. Instead, Bonamassa found the opposite to be true. “Everybody showed up and brought their A-game,” he says. “Dealing with 32 songs and all those artists, to have little to no resistance on anything, you go, ‘Okay, we’re doing this right.’” Rather than assembling a traditional compilation, Bonamassa and Smith built the album from the ground up, recording core tracks first and then inviting artists to step into songs that carried personal meaning for them. “We weren’t making sound-alikes,” Bonamassa notes. “We played it in the spirit of B.B. King, but we did our own versions.”

Produced with the full support of the Estate of B.B. King and The B.B. King Music Company, Blues Summit 100 brings together an intergenerational group of artists spanning blues, rock, soul, and beyond. Across its 32 tracks, the album features performances from Buddy Guy, Gary Clark Jr., Keb’ Mo’, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, George Benson, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Marcus King, Warren Haynes, Dion, Larkin Poe, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Bobby Rush, Michael McDonald, Slash, Aloe Blacc, Trombone Shorty, and many others.

Bonamassa describes the line-up as intentional, not exhaustive. “We wanted a good cross-section,” he says. “Artists who are icons, and artists who maybe aren’t as well known yet.” The result, he believes, is something rare. “In my opinion, this is the greatest gathering of blues artists in the last 50 years for a bespoke album that started from scratch. And it came together because of B.B. King himself. No other person could have made this happen.” The project was first announced on September 16, 2025 – B.B. King’s 100th birthday – with the release of its opening tracks and a commitment to a slow, intentional rollout. Over the following months, Blues Summit 100 unfolded in stages, allowing individual performances to stand on their own before revealing the album’s full arc.

Along the way, the project drew national attention, including a CBS Mornings feature exploring Bonamassa’s early relationship with King and the deeper motivation behind the album, as well as recognition from Esquire, which named it among the Most Anticipated Albums of 2026. At its core, Blues Summit 100 is rooted in Bonamassa’s own history with King, who first invited him on tour at age 12. That early mentorship shaped not only Bonamassa’s musical path, but his understanding of responsibility, generosity, and stewardship within the blues community. Those values guide the project throughout – from the way artists were approached to the care taken in honoring the material.

As the album arrives in full, Bonamassa continues to bring its spirit to the stage throughout 2026, with select performances featuring artists connected to the project and tributes woven into his live shows. Together, the album and its ongoing life onstage reflect the central idea behind Blues Summit 100: that the blues endure through care, collaboration, and a shared commitment to doing the music right. /Sonic Perspective

A true labor of love for Bonamassa, the idea for the album was born after he realized that no major plans had been announced to celebrate King’s 100th birthday. With the blessing of the King estate, he began making calls, starting with longtime friends and collaborators and eventually expanding to a wide network of artists whose lives and music had been shaped by King.

“The Blues are the roots, the rest are the fruits.”

These timeless words from B.B. King capture the essence of his life’s work – reminding us that all music, and indeed much of culture, grows from the Blues.

On behalf of the Estate of B.B. King, the B.B. King Family, Vassal Benford, and Ronald Lebow, we are deeply honored to collaborate with Joe Bonamassa on this special project kicking off Mr. King’s 100th birthday Centennial celebration. Together with Joe Bonamassa, along with other great artists, we celebrate not only Mr. King’s extraordinary music, but also his enduring spirit of love, unity, and the joy he brought to generations. This collection carries his legacy forward—so that new audiences may continue to feel the heart, soul, and humanity of the King of the Blues.– Vassal Gradington Benford III, Chairman, Estate of B.B. 10. Pain's On Me (5:46)

In a career defined by evolution, Joe Bonamassa is ready to turn the page once again. The blues-rock virtuoso’s latest release Breakthrough is his most adventurous and genre-blending studio album to date.

Crafted across multiple continents and infused with a world’s worth of inspiration, Breakthrough marks a bold new chapter for Bonamassa - one that leans on fiery solos, emotionally rich storytelling, groove-driven arrangements, and stylistic exploration. Produced by longtime creative partner Kevin Shirley (Iron Maiden, Black Crowes, Journey), the album was shaped by sessions in Greece, Egypt, Nashville, and Los Angeles, resulting in a vibrant sonic tapestry that shifts effortlessly from funky blues and Texas swing to acoustic ballads and swaggering hard rock.

“I think this album marks a shift in the styling of Joe Bonamassa’s recording output,” says Shirley. “While there are plenty of guitar solos on this record, his emphasis has been on songs primarily. Each time Joe undertakes a new recording project, he seems to access a different part of his vast library of music genre from the jukebox-in-his-head. This album is a round-the-world musical trip - from Little Feat funkiness to Texas swing, from hard rock power to acoustic singer-songwriter-style songs.”

With over 50 albums, 28 No. 1 Billboard Blues albums, and a lifelong commitment to evolving the genre, Bonamassa shows no signs of slowing down. Whether headlining iconic venues, mentoring rising artists through Journeyman Records, or supporting music education via his Keeping The Blues Alive Foundation, Bonamassa continues to shape the future of blues-rock with every note. /Darryl Sterdan, Tinnitist

13. Christmas Comes But Once A Year (4:05)
14. Merry Christmas, Baby (4:48)

As the holiday season approaches, Joe Bonamassa has extended a particular musical offering, a digital album titled Merry Christmas, Baby. The 14-track compilation reflects the musicians’ stylistic lean with blues-infused classics and new original songs that evoke the essence of the yuletide experience.

Merry Christmas, Baby presents a diverse assemblage of songs and opens with an alternate take on the title track, offering a new perspective on Bonamassa’s festive favorite. Also featured are the Irish rendition of “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” and an orchestral version of “O Holy Night,” traditional holiday melodies with unique blues-rock flair. Also included on the set is a soulful rendition of “Lonesome Christmas,” a rhythmic display of Christmas Boogie (One Little Kiss).” Dion Dimucci’s original “Hello Christmas” sees guest Amy Grant assisting Bonamassa on the track. “You Know It’s Christmas” is another Dimucci track that sees the bluesman adding his signature sound to the number.

The release of Merry Christmas, Baby arrives after the successful conclusion of Bonamassa’s 2023 tour, an example of his enduring presence in the sphere of blues and rock. The run spanned 88 shows over 180 days, clocking in at 65,500 miles of travel and accounting for two Pacific journeys and six across the Atlantic. The extensive outing showcased the artist’s superb guitar ability and soulful vocals, highlighting material from his latest studio collection, Blues Deluxe Vol. 2: a tribute to his blues roots and two decades of musical mastery. Notably, the set debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Chart.

Joe Bonamassa - Blues Deluxe

Released: 2003

1. You Upset Me Baby (3:35)
2. Burning Hell (6:49)

9. Pack It Up (4:04)
10. Left Overs (3:23)
11. Walking Blues (4:29)
12. Mumbling Word (3:29)

With electric guitar ace Joe Bonamassa strongly inspired by blues and blues-oriented six-stringers (e.g., Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter), many of his fans would politely pester him about recording a disc of blues standards. Originally done as a lark, the results of such a session were deemed by Bonamassa good enough to be released -- hence, Blues Deluxe, on which he covers some lesser-known songs and includes three originals. Of course, his fierce, scorching guitar is center stage. If axemen such as Peter Green, Rory Gallagher, and Buddy Guy are your cup of tea, this Deluxe item is a necessity. /Mark Keresman, AllMusic

Joe Bonamassa - Blues Deluxe Vol. 2

Album: Blues Deluxe Vol. 2
Size: 98,8 MB
Time: 42:38
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2023
Styles: Blues
Art: Front, back

1. Twenty-Four Hour Blues (4:32)
2. It's Hard But It's Fair (3:15)
3. Well, I Done Got Over It (2:54)
4. I Want To Shout About It (4:12)
5. Win-O (5:29)
6. Hope You Realize It (Goodbye Again) (3:58)
7. Lazy Poker Blues (3:17)
8. You Sure Drive A Hard Bargain (3:59)
9. The Truth Hurts (Feat. Kirk Fletcher & Josh Smith) (4:35)
10. Is It Safe To Go Home (6:22)

Twenty years after Blues Deluxe, his first all-blues album, Joe Bonamassa delivers a sequel with 2023's Blues Deluxe, Vol. 2. He may follow the same blueprint - it largely consists of covers, supplemented by two originals - but the circumstances and collaborators have changed. Here, he foregoes using longtime producer Kevin Shirley to work with Josh Smith, a blues guitarist from Bonamassa's own generation who also contributes the album's closer "Is It Safe to Go Home." Smith helps give Blues Deluxe, Vol. 2 a loose, lived-in feeling that contrasts with the eager fire of the 2003 record.

It's a change that suits Bonamassa well. Not pushing so hard with either his vocals or his guitar, Bonamassa instead settles into a muscular, horn-punctuated groove that rolls right through numbers by Bobby "Blue" Bland, Guitar Slim, Ronnie Earle & the Broadcasters, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, and Albert King. Bonamassa solos plenty but the song is placed at the forefront throughout Blues Deluxe, Vol. 2 - it's closer to an old LP from the '60s than to the shredding blues-rockers who followed in the wake of Stevie Ray Vaughan, which is a roundabout way of saying that Bonamassa's blues seem to be deepening as he grows older, which is not a bad thing at all. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

09. Shadow Lover (Feat. Mike Zito) (3:01)
10. Greatest Of These (2:34)
11. Shine On (Feat. Gary Hoey & Jason Ricci) (3:29)

Special guests on Best of Me by the acclaimed Joanna Connor include labelmates Eric Demmer (saxophone) and Jason Ricci (harmonica) and guitarists Joe Bonamassa, Josh Smith, Gary Hoey and Gulf Coast president Mike Zito (guitar) David Abbruzzese on drums and the Grooveline Horns. Best of Me was produced by Shaun Gotti Calloway, Jason J Roc Edwards, and Joanna Connor, and recorded at Studio2424 in Chicago.

Joining Joanna Connor (guitar and vocals) on the recording is her regular “Wrecking Crew” touring band with Shaun Gotti Calloway (bass) Dan Souvigny (guitar and keys), Curtis Moore Jr. (keys) and Jason J Roc Edwards (drums and vocals.)

“There are musicians that play together and may do it extremely well,” Joanna said about the Best of Me recording sessions. “Then, there are musicians that move as one, that share moments of creating music that is mystically telepathic. The group of musicians we assembled here created a free-flowing and fiery blend of soul, rock, funk and country, all rooted in the blues.”

Joanna continued. “Making this record with the go ahead from Mike Zito and Gulf Coast Records to have free rein was uplifting and inspiring. This recording definitely brought out the’ best of me,’ and solidified my band as a force to be reckoned with. Guitar power and nuance is evident on this record but so are convincing vocals, soul-stirring keyboard work, tighter than tight horns and a rhythm section that propels and compliments each song. The album touches on my maturing as a woman, facing mortality with grace and thanks, celebrating love won, love lost, lust and passion, the pain and pleasure of having this human experience. I hope the listener enjoys this record as much as we had making it.”

Joanna Connor was born in Brooklyn, New York, raised in Worcester, Massachusetts, and after beginning her career there at the age of 17, packed a suitcase, a Fender Twin Amp, a guitar and bought a bus ticket to the Blues Mecca of Chicago, where her goal was to be in a cracking blues band learning from the best . A mere month after moving to the Windy City, Delta blues heavyweight Johnny Littlejohn hired her.

Dion Payton then enlisted her to be a part of his 43rd Street Blues Band, where they held residencies at the hallowed Checkerboard Lounge and the Kingston Mines blues clubs, and were the backing band behind every major talent in the city. Joanna went on to tour with sax great AC Reed before starting her own band at the urging of the Kingston Mines owner. Blind Pig Records signed Joanna in 1989 and released several records on her before she went on to become the second artist to sign with Ruf Records, subsequently releasing many records for the German-based label, which led to a decade of touring throughout Europe.

In 2002, The House of Blues in Chicago offered Joanna and her band a weekly residency, and with her additional residency at the Kingston Mines, Connor made the decision to come off the road touring grind for a while and work locally four nights per week, while raising her two children as a single mom. Joanna also recorded several albums for the highly-respected MC Records during that decade.

In 2019, one of the videos of her fierce guitar work caught the eyes and ears of one of the most prominent guitarists of the modern era -Joe Bonamassa – as well as director Adrian Lynne (Flash Dance, Fatal Attraction). Lynne offered her a scene performing in the movie, Deep Water, starring Ben Affleck. At the same time, Joe Bonamassa and his KTBA Records label gave her the opportunity to make a studio album. Both projects happened right before the COVID 19 epidemic and subsequent lockdown. The KTBA album, 4801 South Indiana, was released in February of 2021 to immense critical acclaim and a number one spot on the Billboard blues chart. The Deep Water film was released on Hulu in March, 2022.

Now being a part of the Gulf Coast Records family, Joanna Connors career path is in full-bloom, playing with sympathetic musicians and a support staff all in lock-step, along with a common purpose and goal of reaching for the top of the blues world. Joanna’s tsunami of musical energy and passion is now unleashed on record with Best of Me. ~Martine Ehrenclou

08. Time Clocks (Live) (7:56)
09. Just 'Cos You Can Don’t Mean You Should (Live) (7:58)
10. Evil Mama (Live) (6:33)

Joe Bonamassa’s New Live Album Tales of Time will be released by J&R Adventures and Provogue/Mascot Label Group on April 14, 2023. The album was recorded in its entirety over two nights at Colorado’s “Red Rocks Amphitheater” and is available as a CD/DVD, CD/Blu-Ray and a 3LP 180 gram Vinyl album set. Bonamassa performed his most recent 2021album Time Clocks in its entirety along with a half dozen older numbers like “Dust Bowl” and “Mountain Time,” and others for the DVD and Vinyl album. The CD contains ten cuts but like the DVD and vinyl “Pilgrimage” and “Hanging on a Loser” from Time Clocks are replaced with “Just ‘Cos You Can Don’t Mean You Should” and “Evil Mama.”

The band is Bonamassa’s most recent touring band comprised of Reese Wynans – Keyboards, Mahalia Barnes – Vocals and Percussion, Lemar Carter – Drums and Percussion, Calvin Turner – Bass Guitar, Jade MacRae – Vocals and Percussion, Dannielle DeAndrea – Vocals and Percussion as well as Josh Smith – Guitar. There is a short 55 second intro titled “Dawn of Time” prior to the opening cut “Notches” which is nearly nine minutes long and was co-written with Kevin Shirley and Charlie Starr from “Blackberry Smoke. It kicks the show off with a barnburner from driving drums to screaming guitar peals.

“The Heart That Never Waits” follows and is a bluesy excursion that is reminiscent of Stevie Ray and was co-written with James House. “Curtain Call” is another lengthy hard driving cut with excellent cinematography recording the performance. In 2022 a video was released of “Mind’s Eye” which was co-written with James House and contains more of the album’s stellar guitar work.

Once again a video of “Questions And Answers” was released in 2022 before the current project. It was co-written by James House and Kevin Shirley with a repetitive beat and almost Latin sound between guitar peals. “The Loyal Kind” was co-written with Bernie Marsden and has a hard rock sound. A video of “Known Unknowns” was released in 2023 that was an excerpt from the DVD recorded at “Red Rocks” as an advance sample from the entire project that was co-written by Bonamassa and Alyssa Bonagura. “Time Clocks” was the title track from the 2021 album and co-written by Bonamassa and Kevin Shirley as an exercise in pushing the envelope. “Just ‘Cos You Can Don’t Mean You Should” gives Wynans a chance to shine before Bonamassa shreds his fret board to a driving beat. The last cut on the CD is “Evil Mama” another co-write with Tom Hambridge and Shirley that is a jam to high heaven followed by Bonamassa’s scalding pyrotechnic guitar peals.

As already mentioned the DVD and vinyl had a half dozen additional cuts ranging from the short intro and conclusion to standards like “Mountain Time,” “Dust Bowl,” “The Ballad of John Henry” and a cover of Gary Moore’s “Midnight Blues.” After attending a thousand live shows over the past 60 years I’ve learned to appreciate ambience but with the pandemic came live internet concerts. No matter how well it is filmed and the sound is reproduced, watching a show from a screen will never hold a candle to the live show. However, this is as good as it gets if you couldn’t be there, like “Woodstock.” ~Bob Gersztyn

Fans of guitar master Joe Bonamassa will be delighted that 2011 was such a prolific year in his career. First came the fine, rootsy Dust Bowl, then 2, the second chapter in his Black Country Communion project's catalog. Don't Explain, a collection of soul, blues, and jazz-oriented covers in collaboration with vocal firebrand Beth Hart marks his third entry this year. The ten-song set of blues and soul is a logical extension of her vocal contribution to "No Love on the Street" from Dust Bowl.

Opening is a thoroughly raucous contemporary blues reading of Ray Charles' "Sinner's Prayer," followed by a quirky version of Tom Waits' "Chocolate Jesus," and an unusual cover of contemporary jazz-pop singer/songwriter Melody Gardot's "You Heart Is as Black as Night." On this cut, a string orchestra adds a touch of perversity; it offers the impression of a femme fatale singing a Brecht-Weill number in a smoky cabaret in front of a moody string orchestra, buoyed by a brooding electric blues quintet. "For My Friends," a Bill Withers' tune, is a big, nasty, jagged blues number that keeps the funky groove intact. The title track, a number closely associated with Billie Holiday, falls flat. Hart tries too hard to employ Holiday's phrasing, the string orchestrations are overblown, and Bonamassa's crew is too reverent. This formula also mars the remake of Aretha Franklin's "Ain't No Way" that closes the set.

Far better are readings of Etta James' signatories "I'd Rather Go Blind," and "Something's Got a Hold on Me." Hart's emotive, throaty delivery is perfectly suited to both songs, and she resists trying to ape James' phrasing. Since they follow one another directly, the musical difference between them also showcase's Hart's diverse abilities. The former is a soul burner, the latter a gospel blues. Bonamassa and band accent her every phrase with requisite rowdiness, sting, and grit.

The pair's only vocal collaboration is a burning read of Delaney & Bonnie's "Well, Well." With Anton Fig's breaks and rim shots underscoring Arlan Scheirbaum's electric piano fills, Bonamassa's burning leads, the chunky, rhythmic foundation from guitarist Blondie Chaplin, and Carmine Rojas' bassline, Hart and the lead guitarist trade whip-smart call and response vocals with enough raw country-soul to bring the song to a new audience. While not a perfect recording, Don't Explain is a good one, whose strengths are numerous enough to warrant a second go round. /Thom Jurek, AllMusic

10. See Saw (3:27)
11. Strange Fruit (5:47)

Singer/songwriter Beth Hart continues to explore her blues and soul roots via 11 cover versions of her favorite tracks on Seesaw, her second album with blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa. Following the same path as their first collaboration, the 2011 all-covers release Don't Explain, the pair hooked up again with producer Kevin Shirley, who has previously worked with Led Zeppelin, Journey, Black Crowes, Joe Bonamassa, and numerous others. The 11 tunes kick off with a jump blues rendition of "Them There Eyes," a rock blues take on Ike & Tina Turner's "Nutbush City Limits"; punchy horns accentuate the Buddy Miles penned "Miss Lady," and they give a straightforward soul treatment to the Don Covay/Steve Cropper tune "See Saw" recorded by Aretha Franklin in 1968.

The influence of Janis Joplin and Etta James is evident on the powerful ballads "If I Tell You I Love You" and "A Sunday Kind of Love." The album closes with an eerie version of the anti-lynching poem from 1937 associated with Billie Holiday, "Strange Fruit." Also returning from the Don't Explain album are Bonamassa's assembled backing band: Anton Fig (drums and percussion), Blondie Chaplin (guitar), Carmine Rojas (bass), Arlan Schierbaum (keyboards), Lenny Castro (percussion), and Michael Rhodes (bass on "I'll Love You More Than You'll Ever Know"). /Al Campbell, AllMusic

Powerhouse singer Mahalia Barnes, one of the most impressive female vocalists to come out of Australia, and her band The Soul Mates have teamed up with American blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa to release an album of Betty Davis covers called Ooh Yea: The Betty Davis Songbook. Betty Davis’s unique story is still fairly unknown. She married Miles Davis in the late ’60s, influencing him with psychedelic rock, and introducing him to Jimi Hendrix. Later, she released three genre-busting albums, 1973’s self-titled debut, 1974’s They Say I’m Different and 1975’s Nasty Gal that have since influenced artists like Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, Ice Cube, Talib Kweli and Ludacris.

Mahalia Barnes, eldest daughter of Australian rock legend Jimmy Barnes and recent contestant on The Voice, has been around music her whole life but has always been most heavily influenced by soul, blues and rock n’ roll. Throughout the years she was exposed to Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Ike + Tina and later, became enthralled with artists like Aretha Franklin, Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder as well as grittier singers like Ann Peebles, Betty Lavette and Betty Davis.

Last year, Mahalia was in the studio with her dad and internationally acclaimed super-producer, Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Journey, Divinyls), when she played Kevin some Betty Davis tracks as a reference. It was then that the idea to record the album Ooh Yea: The Betty Davis Songbook was born. “I have been a fan of Betty Davis for years now,” said Barnes. “I can remember the first time I heard her stuff, I was hooked! She is wild, free, nasty, raw, funky, intense, powerful and sexy. I love the instrumentation, I love the backing vocals. I’ve always wanted to make a record that sounds like what she was doing.”

Ambitious? Undoubtedly. Left of center? Perhaps. But the result? Nothing short of spectacular. Tackling some of Betty’s all-time greatest tracks, it’s safe to say that Mahalia holds her own… and then some! Kevin Shirley enlisted Bonamassa to lend his skills on the record. Heralded as one of the greatest guitar players of his generation, Bonamassa soars on this album. In addition to Barnes on vocals and tambourine and Bonamassa on guitar, the album features The Soul Mates players Franco Raggatt (guitar), Clayton Doley (organ, piano), Lachlan Doley (clav, rhodes), Ben Rodgers (bass), David Hibbard (drums), Yanya Boston (congas), and backing vocalists Darren Percival, Jade MacRae, and Juanita Tippins. It was recorded live over three days at Freight Train Studios in Sydney, Australia.

“Making this album was a real joy. I love the realness. Recording it the way we did kept it really exciting and raw – no tricks or fix ups, old school and real. A perfect take is one that means something and feels great,” said Barnes. Ooh Yea: The Betty Davis Song Book is certainly Mahalia’s most ambitious and prodigious work to date. It’s a record of songs with passion, feeling, power and grit that celebrates one of the most progressive voices of funk and R&B. Do yourself a favor and listen. You won’t regret it.

“What started out with the intentions of being a trio record turned into probably my most adventurous and involved record to date,” explains Bonamassa. His long-time producer Kevin Shirley adds, “I think Joe Bonamassa has made an album that is truly transitional. From a blues musician to a superstar artist, [and] I’m so thrilled to be along for the ride.” Joe and Kevin brought on the legendary Bob Clearmountain to mix the epic tracks, and Bob declares that “This is one of the best albums I’ve mixed in years. Joe is not only one of the finest blues & rock guitarists of our time, he’s also a brilliant songwriter, [which is] impressively apparent on this record.” Recorded in New York City, the album rediscovers Bonamassa at a newfound peak with heartfelt songwriting and an unparalleled Blues Rock prowess. ‘Time Clocks’ follows Joe’s constant evolution as he continues to forge ahead, bending genres, breaking down walls and defying the odds of the music industry. He’s known as “the man in the suit”, loved by many as the ultimate guitar hero, cited by critics as “the world’s biggest blues guitarist” (Guitar World), and now the music mastermind has found yet another layer of immense new artistry to share with his fans. As one of today’s most in-demand touring acts the road has been long and winding, but the rough journey has moulded his craft into gold. For the album, Bonamassa hit the studio with long-time collaborators Kevin Shirley as producer and manager/business partner Roy Weisman as executive producer. The album was recorded in New York City at Germano Studios/The Hit Factory and mixed by Bob Clearmountain (The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen,Toto, Bon Jovi). The band members include Steve Mackey (bass), Lachy Doley (piano), Bunna Lawrie (didgeridoo), Bobby Summerfield (percussion), and Late Night with David Letterman’s Anton Fig (drums and percussion), along with Mahalia Barnes, Juanita Tippins, and Prinnie Stevens on backing vocals. The fantastic artwork on the album was created by famous graphic artist Hugh Syme (Rush, Aerosmith, Whitesnake). ‘Time Clocks’ will be available on CD, Vinyl and digital and released on Bonamassa’s own record label, J&R Adventures in North America, and Provogue/Mascot Label Group throughout the UK and Europe.

07. I Didn't Think She Would Do It (4:11)
08. Beyond The Silence (6:45)
09. Lonely Boy (4:06)
10. Savannah (4:36)

From the album’s title to the choice of Abbey Road Studios as the recording locale, Joe Bonamassa makes every effort to channel the aura of the great British Blues explosion on his latest LP, Royal Tea. Not wanting to appear the slightest bit lukewarm about his approach, Bonamassa even enlists a little collaborative writing help from former Cream lyricist Pete Brown, Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden, and Jools Holland.

With the setting saturated in English decor, listeners might be expecting a set of late ‘60s “near-covers” that hue incredibly close to offerings of that era. Bonamassa and company avoid a heavy-handed tribute to the genre and instead opt for subtle injections and inflections of the style into ten original tracks that would sound as fresh in past generations as they do today. There are brief nods to famous licks of yesteryear, hints of Jeff Beck to be found on distorted solos, and echoes of Clapton’s airy tone on slower passages, but these arise organically and never feel forced or aped.

Royal Tea doesn’t fixate on tempos, tones, or accompaniment. Opening with orchestral strings, “When One Door Opens” weds the baroque intro with a heavy main riff and faint female backing vocals to create a very large soundscape. Anton Fig’s cracking drums herald the second half of the composition in which Bonamassa decorates with some fuzzed-wah guitar fills. Equally heavy is the following “Royal Tea.” Punctuated guitar licks and Reese Wynans’s Hammond Organ bursts propel the verses’ clever call-and-response interplay between Bonamassa and the backing vocalists.

The remainder of the album isn’t as overt in its display of certain aspects British influence, but the overall power and focused songwriting are constant. A slower number like the single “Why Does It Take So Long To Say Goodbye” holds taut through a unique structure and strong verse/chorus dynamic. Even in longer, more relaxed instrumental sections, Bonamassa’s playing remains sharp and doesn’t meander.

Perhaps the most interesting stretch of the LP is the final four-song run in which none of the songs sound remotely alike. “I Didn’t Think She Would Do It” might be the best of the group with its cool intro and sleek rotating-speaker affected vocals. The hard-charging, dual-riffed track boasts a couple of creative changes and some of Bonamassa’s best solo work. Slower and less electrified in tone and instrumentation, the ominous “Beyond The Silence” features the set’s best vocal performance and excellent work by Wynans. Different again is the concise acoustic finale, “Savannah,” stylistically poles apart from the album opener.

Most of the British overtones on Royal Tea aren’t scattered upon the surface but enmeshed subtly. In a way, this is to be expected, as British Blues, not American Blues, ensnared the young Bonamassa and have always influenced his style and guitar playing. When set against basic nostalgia, original songs and artistic nuance usually win the day as they do here. The willingness to reconceive this era rather than just revisit it makes Royal Tea a great album and an intriguing listen. The Review: 9/10 ~Willie Witten

As one of the very few first-generation rock ‘n’ rollers still seriously pursing new avenues of expression, Dion’s Bronx soul is very much in evidence on this new album, a full-tilt blues offering. The blues songs therein are not “covers” nor Dion’s versions of blues standards. These compositions are in fact original blues masterpieces which are destined to become classics. He came up with the music and words for twelve of them and finished those with co-writer Mike Aquilina. The two exceptions are “Hymn To Him” which Dion wrote with Bill Tuohy and “Kickin’ Child,” written with Buddy Lucas.

To tell those stories, Dion recruited help from a few notable friends and admirers. He thought, “I needed to round up the best guitarists and musicians alive and pick them from every generation, every variation of blues.” And that’s just what he did, surrounding himself with those who feel the blues spirit as he does.

The album’s guests include the cream of the contemporary scene’s blues-rooted slingers including Jeff Beck, Billy Gibbons, Joe Bonamassa, Brian Setzer, Sonny Landreth, Samantha Fish, John Hammond Jr., Joe Louis Walker, Rory Block , Jimmy and Jerry Vivino, vintage guitar guru Joe Menza as well as icons Stevie Van Zandt, Patti Scialfa, Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison and Paul Simon. Yes, that’s a whole lot of star power but each participated not because of his or her marquee appeal but because of what each could add musically. The result is one reflective of nuanced devotion to the blues rather than a gratuitous display of individual virtuosity. It’s very much Dion’s album and those bold face names participating are most convincingly there for him.
