Singer/harmonica player Doug Jay, musical globetrotter in matters of the blues, was born in 1953 in Pensacola, Florida. His professional career began in the early '70s and in 1976 he joined The Allstars from Charlottesville. Their 1978 album was a critic's favourite. After a stay in Bob Margolin's band, in 1990 he moved to the west coast where he recorded his first solo album.
Back on the east coast a second solo album followed in the mid '90s. In the meantime he had toured Europe twice as a member of Austria's Mojo Blues Band and finally made Osnabruck, Germany, his European home. With the current line-up of his band, The Blue Jays, he has here recorded a varied set of blues. With the exception of two Otis Spann covers and a Floyd Dixon tune, Doug and the band have written the material.
This covers a whole lot of ground, from laid-back swamp blues to the deep sounds of Chicago, from guitar-driven blues to jump and swing in the finest west coast tradition. Doug's a fine vocalist, soulful and powerful, and his harp playing is exceptional.
