Singer/harmonica player Doug Jay, musical globetrotter in matters of the blues, was born in 1953 in Pensacola, Florida. His professional career began in the early '70s and in 1976 he joined The Allstars from Charlottesville. Their 1978 album was a critic's favourite. After a stay in Bob Margolin's band, in 1990 he moved to the west coast where he recorded his first solo album.

Back on the east coast a second solo album followed in the mid '90s. In the meantime he had toured Europe twice as a member of Austria's Mojo Blues Band and finally made Osnabruck, Germany, his European home. With the current line-up of his band, The Blue Jays, he has here recorded a varied set of blues. With the exception of two Otis Spann covers and a Floyd Dixon tune, Doug and the band have written the material.

This covers a whole lot of ground, from laid-back swamp blues to the deep sounds of Chicago, from guitar-driven blues to jump and swing in the finest west coast tradition. Doug's a fine vocalist, soulful and powerful, and his harp playing is exceptional.

Since the late '70s and his days with the Allstars from Charlottesville, Doug Jay has been regarded as one of those fine young and innovative blues harmonica players. When he moved to Germany a couple of years ago, he brought tape boxes containing these fine recordings. This set will bring you a great variety of styles, from straight '50s Chicago style blues to rockin' r&b, some tex-mex, and even a cover of a Drifters song from 1956, "Why Do Fools Fall In Love". But most important: Doug's a fine player and at home on both, diatonic and chromatic harmonicas. If you're not familiar with him, check him out, especially on the cuts with the great Alex Schultz. /Amazon

Alex Schultz - guitar
Steve Potter - bass

Follow-up to his groundbreaking European debut, 'Jackpot!' from 2005. Doug Jay grew-up near Washington, DC and played in a couple of groups on the east and west coasts before starting his own band, years ago. Since moving to Europe, Doug resides in Osnabrück, Germany. The Blue Jays are an international band with a Dutch bass player, and two Germans. During the past years they have developed a significant ensemble sound, featuring guitar ace Jimmy Reiter. Jimmy ranks amongst the best, not in Germany, but in Europe. The ryhthm section works like a tight unit, and Doug sounds relaxed and sings with a strong voice (and he also adds some mangificant, modern harmonica solos). 'Under the Radar' will establish the band as one of Europe's leading blues formats. Mostly originals, covers by Lonesome Sundown, Lowell Fulson and Little Milton. With their special blend of deep blues, vintage rock'n'roll (NO bluesrock!), swampy sounds, ballads and rockers, New Orleans style blues and r&b, Doug Jay & The Blue Jays will cut their own blues path. DOUG JAY - vocals/harmonica, CHRISTOPH 'JIMMY' REITER - guitar, JASPER MORTIER - upright & electric bass, ANDRE WERKMEISTER - drums. Special guests: 'SAX' GORDON BEADLE - sax, TINO BARKER - sax, CHRIS RANNENBERG - pno, MO FUHRHOP - org, KAI STRAUSS - gtr
