American blues guitarist and singer, Larry McCray established himself on the blues scene way back in 1991 with his debut release titled Ambition. After more than three decades on the scene, with multiple records under his belt, and having received several awards for his contributions to blues music, including the ‘Sunshine’ Sonny Payne Award for Blues Excellence in 2015, and was voted Blues Rock Review’s #1 album of 2022 for Blues Without You, McCray is back with a brand new album labelled Heartbreak City. The new record, made in collaboration with Joe Bonamassa’s KTBA Records features 10 brand new tracks in Larry’s signature style.

A funky, spellbinding rhythm welcomes us aboard this blues express, before McCray dispatches the train with guitar licks played with a feel that even the late great B.B. King would have been proud of. In addition to the strong lead vocals, “Try to Be a Good Man” also features powerful backing vocals adding that soul vibe to the mix. Next up, introduced by a killer brass section “Heartbreak City” is a slow-paced late-night blues number. Larry’s soulful singing style is enriched by wonderful electric organ parts adding to the overall warm atmosphere. The title track has got great dynamics throughout, and that slow bend leading up to a deluxe guitar solo is what really makes this song stand out. “Bye Bye Blues” is another soul-infused tune. Talking about the healing power of love the chorus meditates on a lovely lyric: ‘when I said hello to you, I said bye bye blues’.

Grabbing the attention right away with the breaks in the intro, “Bright Side” features creative guitar work, and an airtight groove, with percussions and hand-claps fuelling its energy. Now for something completely fresh, we’ve got a digital beat kicking “Everything Falls On Me” off. That is eventually superseded by a fun and irresistible drum groove. The track is spiced up with a cheeky, bluesy riff, while the vocals are just soul, soul, soul. Keys lead the way into a minor-key ballad titled “I Know What I’ve Done”. A fiery guitar solo is the crown of this slow-burner packed with emotion that focuses on the theme of making amends. Larry McCray is an extraordinary guitar player all around, but the tone that he squeezes out of the old 6-string is out of this world!

“Keep On Loving My Baby” is a straightforward, no-nonsense blues tune. Oh, the shuffle in this one – absolutely infectious, not to mention the honky-tonk piano. The guitar licks are so fine, it’s borderline rude. The gem of this record – a live rendition of this tune must be a real treat! Another hot, bluesy track called “Hangman” follows, with an acoustic delta-style guitar riff underlined by a laidback stomping drum beat, paving the way for a fine blues-soul blend that is “Stop Your Crying”. One, two, one, two, three, uh! Tight collaboration of the rhythm section is the driving force behind the mean blues rock banger titled “Crazy World” in which McCray once again showcases just how great a guitarist he is. What a way to wrap this amazing album up!

Throughout his career, McCray has kept his roots deep in the blues, but never hesitated to explore and blend other genres, most notably rock and soul. The new album is no exception – Larry takes the best out of those genres and creates a truly powerful, genuine, and personal piece of work. Speaking about Heartbreak City, the artist said, “I feel totally reborn. This new album lets me show the full scope of what I do - it’s blues, it’s soul, it’s real stories. This is who I am.” With his seemingly inexhaustible creativity, wonderful guitar work, and rich soulful voice, Larry McCray continues to nurture and evolve the genre whilst inspiring the fans and fellow musicians alike. /Neven Tili, Blues Rock Review

Notodden Blues Festival (NBF) is one of the largest blues music festivals in Europe and the largest in Scandinavia. The festival is held in Notodden, Norway, usually in early August. It has been running annually since 1988.

The festival does not aim to be the biggest of its type, but to become Europe's "largest blues experience", which is reflected in their emphasis on quality over quantity.

If contemporary blues has a long-term future in the 21st century, it's very likely that guitarist Larry McCray will continue to play a recurring role in its ongoing development. Beginning with this 1990 debut album, Ambition, and continuing into the new millennium, McCray has signaled both a strong commitment to the tradition and the vision to usher the genre in exciting new directions.

McCray's first influence on guitar was none other than his sister, Clara, who toured regionally around Arkansas with her own combo, the Rockets. Clara never got to record her Freddie King-styled blues for posterity -- but her little brother has at least partially made up for that omission. Larry followed Clara up to Saginaw, Michigan in 1972. She turned him on to the joys of the three Kings (B.B., Freddie, and Albert), Albert Collins, and Magic Sam, and Larry added superheated rock licks (à la Jimi Hendrix and the Allman Brothers) to his arsenal as he began playing the local circuit with his brothers Carl on bass and Steve on drums.

Working on General Motors' assembly line occupied a great deal of Larry McCray's time after he finished high school. But he eventually found enough free hours to put together Ambition for Point Blank in a Detroit friend's basement studio. The stunning debut set was a convincing hybrid of blues, rock, and soul, McCray combining the interrelated idioms in sizzling fashion. Suddenly, the stocky young guitarist was touring with labelmate Albert Collins. His 1993 Point Blank encore, Delta Hurricane, was a slicker affair produced by veteran British blues maven Mike Vernon that McCray much preferred to his homemade debut. He followed Delta Hurricane with Meet Me at the Lake in 1996 and Born to Play the Blues in 1998. The bluesman has remained active in the 2000s with albums including 2001's Believe It and Blues Is My Business, 2006's Live on Interstate 75 (his first live outing, recorded in Detroit), and the eponymous Larry McCray in 2007. ~Bill Dahl

Size: 113,3 MB
Time: 48:11
File: MP3 @ 320K/s

01. What Have I Done Wrong (Feat. Joe Bonamassa) (3:55)

09. Like It Like You Do (Feat. Carolyn Wonderland) (3:46)
10. Nobody Told Me (Feat. Carolyn Wonderland) (7:22)

The album boasts an impressive and diverse list of guest guitarists, all personal favorites of Mayall’s including Todd Rundgren, Little Steven Van Zandt of The E Street Band, Alex Lifeson from Rush, Joe Bonamassa, Larry McCray and Carolyn Wonderland who will be joining the band on tour. Also, on hand are Mayall’s dynamic Chicago rhythm section of Greg Rzab on bass guitar and Jay Davenport on drums, along with Billy Watts (Lucinda Williams) on rhythm guitar and Mayall’s regular horn section, moonlighting from their day job in The Late Show with Conan O’Brien’s house band.

The album was recorded at The Foo Fighters’ Studio 606 on the same legendary Sound City Neve console his one-time protégés from Fleetwood Mac used to record parts of the best-selling Rumours album.

“This project has been a true labor of love for me and I can’t wait for people to hear the fireworks that took place,” beams Mayall. Nobody Told Me is an apt title for the blues icon who suffered a recent unexpected health scare shortly after recording the album. But, the seemingly ageless road dog, who famously takes no days off and carries his own gear on tour, has been given a clean bill of health and plans to return to his usual grueling touring schedule to support the release.

Burly Larry McCray crashed the consciousness of the blues world with his stunning debut album, comprised of equal parts blues, soul, and rock. Guitar fanatics will no doubt wax rhapsodic about McCray's blazing pyrotechnics on "Nobody Never Hurt Nobody with the Blues," but it's the mellower R&B material buried toward the end of the CD - "Secret Lover," "Me and My Baby" - that best displays the warmth of the young bluesman's voice. Larry McCray - Live On Interstate 75

9. Blues Is My Business (7:28)
10. Four Little Boys (11:32)
11. Nobody Never Hurt Nobody With The Blues (4:09)
12. Soul Shine (8:14)

If you want high-energy guitar blues mixed with some surprisingly soulful vocals, look no further than Larry McCray. His first live album, recorded in Detroit, covers the rich bases of his live act, from the guitar pyrotechnics of "Man on Bended Knees," where you can almost hear the ghost of Hendrix hovering above the stage, to the soul of "Believe It." His backing trio does exactly what's expected, they hit the groove perfectly on each number, leaving McCray in the spotlight, which is where he belongs (although he does share it with Lucky Peterson on "Four Little Boys," a powerhouse 11-minute track).

But there are several facets to McCray's music. He can turn in a good blues ballad on "Gone for Good" or look to both the church and reggae for inspiration on "Somebody's Watching." You come away from the experience of this live disc wondering why McCray isn't a major blues star. He deserves to be.

A protege of Willie Dixon's he performed at the age of five on the Ed Sullivan show. Acclaimed as a child prodigy, he consolidated his musical skills at Buffalo Academy, before bowing to the inevitable and playing guitar and keyboards for the likes of Etta James. Bobby Bland and Little Milton. That pedigree is evident in every track here. We hear Lucky evolving from assurance to sheer mastery. And that's to say nothing of his singing, songwriting, and band leading skills.

Size: 155,0 MB
Time: 66:37

Released: 2012
Styles: Blues Rock

01 Larry McCray - Get Your Blues On (5:40)
02 Birddog & Friends - I Know The Reason (4:33)
03 Chris Duarte - Let's Have A Party (4:07)
04 Eric Sardinas & Big Motor - Worried Blues (4:20)

06 Wayne Baker Brooks - Sooner Or Later (9:33)

08 Sonny Landreth - Back To Bayou Teche (8:22)
09 Robben Ford - Lateral Climb (3:49)
10 Jeremy Spencer - Bitter Lemon (8:35)
11 Jeremy Spencer - Psychic Waste (6:06)

This BamFest album commemorates the second BamFest event in Wisconsin.

The album kicks off with “Get Your Blues On” and Larry McCray’s infectious guitar style and vocals are a fantastic way to start off this sampler. The funky twang of his guitar and soulful voice are well represented here. “I Know the Reason” features Birddog and Friends. The song features a driving groove and beautiful harp over blows that are just fantastic. Chris Duarte is next and he sets the place en fuego with his “Let’s Have a Party.” The beat is 100 mph and the guitar is aflame in a whirlwind of fire and rocking blues.

Eric Sardinas and Big Motor follow and the track chosen for this live album here is “Worried Blues.” Instead of a huge electric sound we are served up a dobro slide piece with Sardinas growling out the lyrics. He then transitions into the song’s bridge which is in an electrical storm of sound. But then he returns to acoustic and it is just impressive stuff. The evening crowd is quiet behind him, obviously impressed by his per-formance. “Holdin’ Ground” is next. I’ve joked that Bobby Messano is the best guitar player no one has heard of. This guitar star gives it up in this huge guitar piece where Messano demonstrates his craft as few can, the title track from his 2003 album. Beautiful stuff! Wayne Baker Brooks is offered up with “Sooner Or Later,” a great original from his Mystery album. It is a driving, hot tune where Baker shows what he has learned from his musical family.

Sonny Landreth plays “Blue Tarp Blues,” a song about Hurricane Katrina, and “Back to Bayou Teche,” the 125-mile waterway that was an original path of the Mississippi River. The former is a social and political state-ment, the latter a love song asking his chere to pass by the Bayou Teche. Landreth is at his best in these songs, showing off his six string prowess where he can be dark and ominous or light and frivolous. Robben Ford is next in “Lateral Climb” where he shows off his guitar and restraint. This is great show-case of Ford with plenty of air between his notes and superb tone.

Closing things out on the album Is Jeremy Spencer. “Bitter Lemon” is a down tempo piece where this former “Fleetwood Mac” star picks out a soulful sound with individual notes fluttering about like a butterfly. He and the pianist trade off from time to time, tinkling and trickling off notes and riffs together. He and the album close with “Psychic Waste,” another great slide piece where he and the harp player trade off solos nicely.

Over the years, Cleopatra has made it something of a specialty of theirs to release tribute albums to popular artists, but 2012's Black on Blues: A Tribute to the Black Keys feels a little different than its predecessors -- not as rushed, almost bordering on the carefully considered. Of course, that impression may just be a reflection of the presence of the Iggy Pop and Ginger Baker duet on "Lonely Boy," a collaboration that pays back some dividends as the melody is perfectly suited for Iggy and Ginger swings with nonchalant assurance. It is the performance that's least concerned with the blues but it's not the only noteworthy performance, odd pairing, or comeback, either: Dave Davies teams up with Huw Lloyd-Langton for "Money Maker" and Jackie Lomax comes out for "Dead and Gone." Almost everybody involved sticks to songs from Brothers and El Camino, stripping away whatever interesting sonic flourishes the Keys or Danger Mouse laid upon the originals, concentrating on the bluesy core. Naturally, there is a lot more guitar here than on the Black Keys versions -- and the guitar tends not to be the kind of fuzz explosions Dan Auerbach favors; instead, it's a lot of cleanly articulated Stratocaster picking and overdriven tube amps -- and although it paints the Black Keys as a little more traditional than they actually are, it's generally agreeable stuff apart from the occasional gut-busting vocal (see Pat Travers' exaggerated "Everlasting Light"). And that may not be the same thing as necessary or interesting, but Black on Blues is something that most Cleopatra comps of this nature are not: it's enjoyable. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

8. Blue River (5:01)
9. Hole In My Heart (5:38)
10. Three Straight Days Of Rain (3:25)
11. Blues In The City (5:07)

Blues guitarist and vocalist Larry McCray's second Pointblank CD gets off to a dreary start with the title track, a tune with neither interesting lyrics nor a good arrangement. But after that flop fades, the remaining 10 cuts are almost as powerful as the material on his critically acclaimed debut. McCray has the kind of tough, down-in-the-dirt voice you can neither fake nor acquire. His guitar work is equally authentic; there aren't any flashy phrases or flamboyant riffs, just pile-driving lines, barreling statements and energetic support for his vocals. There aren't many better contemporary blues albums being made by major labels; McCray is the real deal. /AllMusic

Drawing on wise words from the late Bob Marley, "I always try to move forward while remembering where I came from," McCray said, and so you'll hear the blues guitar that has him touring around the world these days.

That philosophy comes through in "The Gibson Sessions" as well, McCray's signature licks turning songs like Bob Seger's "Night Moves" and the Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" into a "Wait, I hear something familiar in there" experience.

And while the guest guitarists who added crunch to "The Gibson Sessions" – Dickey Betts, Derek Trucks, Jimmy Herring and David Hidalgo – aren't likely to show up in Saginaw, fans here know McCray can ably hold his own on stage.

Not everyone can brag of being Orville H. Gibson Male Blues Guitarist of the Year, one of many accolades that came his way since he introduced his fusion of blues, rock and soul with "Ambition" in 1990. Most recently, he was named the top guitarist, with Joe Bonamassa taking second, in the 2014 International Blues Matters Writers' Poll.

After a brief detour with the Bluegills' duet album Meet Me at the Lake, Larry McCray returned to form with the storming Born to Play the Blues. Since his 1991 debut Ambition, McCray has been hailed as one of the great contemporary bluesmen of the '90s, and this record reminds us why. It isn't that he offers any innovations or surprises -- it's that he is a pure, no-nonsense bluesman, delivering solid guitar lines and soulful vocals. McCray also gets credit for not sticking with tried-and-true material, choosing to write his own songs and try out several tunes from Dave Steen and taking a stab at a Warren Hayes cover. Throughout it all, he plays and sings with passion and heart, confirming his position as one of the finest contemporary bluesmen around. ~Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Lucky Peterson (born Judge Kenneth Peterson, December 13, 1964, Buffalo, New York) is an American musician who plays contemporary blues, fusing soul, R&B, gospel and rock and roll. He plays guitar and keyboards. Music journalist Tony Russell, in his book The Blues - From Robert Johnson to Robert Cray has said, "he may be the only blues musician to have had national television exposure in short pants.
Peterson's father, bluesman James Peterson, owned a nightclub in Buffalo called The Governor's Inn. The club was a regular stop for fellow bluesmen such as Willie Dixon. Dixon saw a five-year-old Lucky Peterson performing at the club and, in Peterson's words, "Took me under his wing." Months later, Peterson performed on The Tonight Show, The Ed Sullivan Show and What's My Line?. Millions of people watched Peterson sing "1-2-3-4", a cover version of "Please, Please, Please" by James Brown. At the time, Peterson said "his father wrote it". Around this time he recorded his first album, Our Future: 5 Year Old Lucky Peterson, for Today/Perception Records and appeared on the public television show, Soul!.

As a teen, Peterson studied at the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts, where he played the French horn with the school symphony. Soon, he was playing backup guitar and keyboards for Etta James, Bobby "Blue" Bland, and Little Milton.

The 1990s were a prolific period for Peterson. Two solo Bob Greenlee produced albums for the Chicago-based Alligator Records (1989's Lucky Strikes! and the following year's Triple Play) remain his finest recorded offerings. He then released four more for the record label, Verve Records (I'm Ready, Beyond Cool, Lifetime and Move). While with Verve, Peterson collaborated with Mavis Staples on a tribute to gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, called Spirituals & Gospel. Peterson played electric organ behind Staples' singing.

More albums from Peterson came after 2000. He recorded two for Blue Thumb Records (Lucky Peterson and Double Dealin'), and one for Disques Dreyfus entitled, Black Midnight Sun. In 2007, he released Tete a Tete on JSP Records.

Bernard Allison, Larry McCray, Carl Weathersby - Triple Fret (Guest Lucky Peterson)

Size: 115,5 MB
Time: 50:11
File: MP3 @ 320K/s
Released: 2005
Styles: Chicago Blues
Art: Full

01. Bottle Of Whiskey (7:22)
02. Bluesman (6:53)
03. Get Drunk And Pop The Trunk (3:33)
04. Don't Tie Me Down (5:30)
05. I'm Praying For You (4:08)
06. Where's Lucky (7:18)
07. Good To Me (4:08)
08. Ain't Nothing But The Truth (4:48)
09. Take It Slow (6:26)

Personnel: Bernard Allison (vocals, guitar); Larry McCray (vocals, guitar); Carl Weathersby (vocals, guitar); John Colby (piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet); Lucky Peterson (organ); Johnny B. Gayden (bass guitar); Steve McCray (drums).

Although Bernard Allison gets star billing (and does all the vocals), this is a trio record, with fellow electric blues guitarists Larry McCray and Carl Weathersby contributing as much guitar firepower as Allison. Even better, second-generation Hammond organ legend Lucky Peterson guests, adding some welcome musical variety to the otherwise fret-heavy selection and getting his own showcase, the smoking seven-minute instrumental workout "Where's Lucky?" That leaves the songwriting as the only weak spot, but unfortunately, it's pretty seriously weak. Most of the songs on Triple Fret are hackneyed Chicago blues riffs with self-referential lyrics about how hard it is to be a bluesman. Tune out the lyrics and the undistinguished chord changes and the sheer enjoyment of the trio's playing comes through. For some, however, that might not be quite enough. ~ Stewart Mason
