Billy Joe Perry (better known as Howl-N-Madd) was born in Tula, MS. Howl-N-Madd's slave ancestors lived in the same shack where he was born. His mother always worked, and she carried him on her cotton sack while she picked cotton. His father was a sharecropper and pulp wood hauler. But his dad's real job was moonshining. Howl-N-Madd's family moved up north to Chicago and that's where he really began to cut his teeth in music. At only 14 years old, he got the opportunity to play and record with gospel greats like the Clefs Of Calvary and The Salem Travelers. Howl-N-Madd recorded "Keep On Marching" with the Clefs of Calvary (HOB Records 268) and “Wait On The Lord” with The Salem Travelers (Chess Records). The Salem Travelers played at The Apollo Theatre for 12 days.

He worked with Mildred Clark and the Melodyaires on ABC Records ("Changing The World"), Rev. Columbus Mann, Rev Earnest Franklin, The Violenaires, and Albertina Walker ("I'm Leaving The Choice To You" and "It Sure Is Good"). Little Milton Campbell gave Howl-N-Madd his first opportunity to sing and play professionally in a blues band. He's had an extremely impressive career working with musicians like Johnnie Taylor, Little Johnnie Taylor, Freddie King, Cash McCall, and T-Bone Walker to name a few.

Howl-N-Madd went by the name Billy Easton in the 1960s and had a song that got major airplay called “I Was A Fool” with Dispo. He was one of the first people to be on the long running TV show Soul Train as Billy Easton. He led his own bands like Bill Perry and Rammit with Fantasy Records. After a few years away from music while living in California, Howl-N-Madd decided to go back to his roots. He and his family moved to Mississippi where he joined a group called The Relaxations. He inspired his kids to play music and started a family band called The Perrys'. Howl-N-Madd was on lead guitar, his son Bill was on lead keys, his daughter Sharo played bass keyboard, and a drummer. The Perrys performed for 5 months in Hong Kong, China and 3 months in Jakarta, Indonesia. They toured across America and played many festivals and tours.

Bill then formed The Bill Howl-N-Madd Perry band. He also performed as a duo with his daughter Shy Perry, becoming one of the most popular duo groups performing in clubs and festivals nationally and internationally. Howl-N-Madd is noted on several Mississippi Blues Markers. He is also the subject of an exhibit at the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale. He was a music teacher at the Delta Blues Museum for 5 years and he helped educate many young children about the blues.

Bill’s last performance was in Luanda, Angola. Bill Howl-N-Madd Perry with his son Bill Perry and Shy Perry performed at the International Jazz Festival 2023 in Luanda, Angola. Pauline Perry accompanied them on the trip. The show was an astounding success, which is not a surprise for those who know the Perry’s. They represented all that is true and great about the Blues and about Mississippi. Bill Howl-N-Madd Perry passed away in May 2023.

Nino Grandi is a musician from Rio de Janeiro currently based in the city of Bad Homburg in Germany, where he participates in various musical projects and also works professionally as a tattoo artist. Having been in Europe for six years, he has played in various places, in countries such as Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal, Italy and some festivals such as Sommerfest des Jazzclubs, Eurofolk Festival Ingelheim and the popular Herzberg Festival. This certainly added more confidence and a good background for his authorial flight, the album The Tales of the Wild Cat.

Even though he is a versatile musician and has gone through several styles throughout his 30-year career, Nino has always had a strong blues vein, taking as reference the masters of the style such as Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy and even rock with blues influences such as Faces, Rolling Stones, Black Crowes, ZZ Top and Allman Brothers, so it was to be expected that this work would follow in this direction. With the trio as a base and with some additional musicians who help give more body to the final result, The Tales of the Wild Cat brings 10 original songs produced by Thorsten von Aufschnaiter (who is also the bassist) and recorded in the band's own studio.

Personnel: Nino Grandi (guitar, vocals); Thorsten von Aufschnaiter (bass); Luca von Aufschnaiter (drums). Additional musicians: Nana Black, Natschy, Steffy (backing vocals); Frank Albersmann, Leo Caputti, Andreas Graf (piano/keyboards); Eduardo Sanna (harmonica).

The cosmic American love child of Howlin Wolf and Link Wray! Known as a "musician's musician," Alvin Youngblood Hart's praises have been sung by everyone from Bob Dylan to Brit guitar gods Eric Clapton & Mick Taylor.

Since the release of his 1996 debut recording, the all-acoustic BIG MAMA'S DOOR, Hart has relayed his eclectic musical message around the world. A devout follower of the "no barriers" approach carved out by veteran performers like Gatemouth Brown and the late/great Doug Sahm, Hart aims to delight the masses and points to challenge the so-called blues purists. BIG MAMA'S DOOR was reviewed with blessings by Playboy with the prospect that Hart "had the power to bring the blues to Generation X" also stating that "Charley Patton would approve of Hart's version of Pony Blues, and the cover of Gallows Pole is the coolest since Led Zeppelin's".

Based on the strength of his record debut and the allure of his live shows, Hart received five nominations at the 1997 W.C. Handy Blues Awards. He was nominated for Best New Artist, Best Acoustic Artist, and Best Traditional Blues Artist and his album (BIG MAMA'S DOOR) was nominated for both Acoustic Album of the Year and Traditional Album of the Year. He received the award for Best New Artist. Hart also received two Living Blues Awards that same year. The anticipated sophomore release of TERRITORY in 1998 gave a rousing tribute to all forms of American music and received the Downbeat Magazine Critics' Poll Award for Best Blues Album (though TERRITORY is not a Blues album). The summer of 1999 found Hart teaming up with celebrated producer Jim Dickinson to begin recording START WITH THE SOUL, a record hailed as a new-breed Southern Rock classic and one that piloted Hart's return to the "sacred garage." START WITH THE SOUL was chosen by the New York Times as one of the top 10 releases of 2000, as well as the BBC's Blues Record of the Year.

In 2001 Hart shared Living Blues Magazine's best guitarist honors with fellow road dog Big Jack Johnson. The 2003 release of DOWN IN THE ALLEY garnered a Grammy nomination. Despite critics' recurring attempts to suggest Hart was "best enjoyed when performing solo", Hart continued to diversify his audience by extensively touring as a member of Job Cain, a hard-rocking side project he assembled with guitarist Audley Freed (Cry of Love/Black Crowes) and Nashville musician Robert Kearns (The Bottle Rockets/Lynyrd Skynyrd). In August of 2003, Hart was invited to fill in for Taj Mahal for five nights in Tokyo as a member of Kip Hanrahan's Conjure, the world's longest running jazz poetry ensemble. Assembled to lend musical support to the words of Bay Area poet Ishmael Reed, Conjure featured the talents of tenor sax giant David Murray and original Meters guitarist Leo Nocentelli. Hart remains a member of the revolving cast and recorded with the group on BAD MOUTH.

In 2004, Hart received a Grammy for his philanthropic contribution to the compilation BEAUTIFUL DREAMER: THE SONGS OF STEPHEN FOSTER. All of the proceeds from the recording benefited American Roots Publishing, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving American regional culture through literature and art. In the summer of 2005, fortified in the wake of much recognition and determined to defy any stereotypes attached to his artistry, Hart released the self-produced (and personal favorite) MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER a rock guitar free-for-all, paying homage to fallen and missing rockers like Phil Lynott and Sly Stone. Hart's songwriting, singing and electric guitar prowess are all championed on this project and showcase the versatility he continuously strives to offer his fans and profession. In 2006, Hart collaborated with several Memphis area musicians in the Craig Brewer cult hit film "Black Snake Moan" by both serving as a guitar tutor to the film's leading actor, Samuel L. Jackson, and recording a duet with the film's female lead, Christina Ricci, for the film's riveting soundtrack. In the fall of 2006, Hart was invited to hit the road for two months with Rock-n-Roll legend Bo Diddley for what turned out to be Diddley's final coast to coast tour.

In April of 2007, Hart's extended and varied interests led him to influence his local educational arena by participating on a tour of Mississippi high schools as a member of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. Hart then joined fellow notable string playing colleagues Corey Harris, Don Vappie, Keb Mo and Guy Davis and contributed to the uniquely progressive 2007 OtisTaylor record RECAPTURING THE BANJO. Later that year, Hart was called upon to contribute his doyen knowledge of blues music to the Denzel Washington-co produced and directed film THE GREAT DEBATERS. Based on a true story about the black historical Wiley College debate team, the release of the film coincided with a nationally stepped-up effort by urban debate leagues to get hundreds of inner-city and financially challenged schools to establish debate programs (and short term loans help solve financial problems in Grand Prairie, TX). As an avid roots music performer and connoisseur, not only did Hart fit the bill to record predominately on the films dynamic soundtrack, Hart also proved a natural onscreen fit for the role of a juke joint musician. Songs for THE GREAT DEBATERS soundtrack were comprised of remakes of traditional blues and gospel songs from the 1920s and 1930s and were hand-picked by Denzel Washington from over 1000 selections.

A personal career highlight occurred in the summer of 2008 when Hart met the late Irish guitar legend Gary Moore. Moore invited Hart, a lifelong Thin Lizzy fan, onstage to jam with himself and original Thin Lizzy drummer, Brian Downey. In the Spring of 2009 Moore requested Hart's band as the opening act on a tour of Germany. Moore was seen offstage most every night with friends, cheering Hart's band along during their set. In 2010 Hart joined forces with friends Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars, Black Crowes) and Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Tri-State Coalition) to form "The South Memphis String Band". The fun-loving and regaling trio was quickly dubbed by the media as an "acoustic super group". Recorded in a borrowed radio station studio while the band was on its first road trip, their debut record HOME SWEET HOME was received with rabid enthusiasm. The 2011 Blues Music Awards (The Blues Foundation) nominated the record for "Best Acoustic Album". The group plans to release a second album in the spring of 2012. When not touring solo or plugged in with his revered rock trio "Alvin Youngblood Hart's Muscle Theory", Hart enjoys researching, collecting, repairing and modifying obscure musical equipment.

2024 is an important milestone in the Finnish narrative of Chicago Blues. It has been 110 years since the birth of Eddie Boyd (US), a blues legend who moved to Helsinki in the early 70s and continued to live here until his death three decades prior, in 1994. His historic album, Brotherhood, released by Finnish Blues Society under its own FBS label in 1975, has also reached a respectable age of half a century.

To pay tribute to the passing of time, as well as to a particularly significant role model, Pepe Ahlqvist, a senior statesman of Finnish Blues, has returned to the studio together with keyboard legend Jukka Gustavson and an ensemble of top Finnish musicians. The result, "Stovall, Coahoma: A Tribute To Eddie Boyd", features 10 songs from Boyd's repertoire, plus the newly written title song of the album.

Amber Rachelle & The Sweet Potatoes are a dynamic jazz band playing everything from 1930's swing to early rhythm and blues. Amber Rachelle's powerhouse voice is attention grabbing and memorable.

Amber was only 17 when she started busking on the streets of Seattle, her home town. Around the time she was 18, she found and fell in love with swing dancing and, more specifically the music being played at these dance events. At the time, Amber had no experience in jazz and had never been exposed to it growing up. Amber, being the musical person that she was, wanted to start pursuing jazz and exploring this new unfamiliar genre. She started going down rabbit holes listening to everything she could and learning the history of jazz along with its ties to Lindy Hop and New Orleans.

After meeting some other musicians in the Seattle jazz scene, she started singing in her first ever jazz band, “Street Remedy”. They would busk at the Seattle Center, and it was during this time that Amber began training in singing jazz and bandleading. At 18, She was happily living in her van and busking daily at Pike Place Market to make ends meet. When she was 19, her and some fellow musicians took a road trip to New Orleans, where they would busk on Royal Street outside of Rouses. Amber immediately fell in love with the city and knew she had found her place in this world.

After heading home, all she wanted was to get back to New Orleans. She finally moved back when she was 22 and began what would become her New Orleans musical journey. It was that year she came up with the name Amber Rachelle & The Sweet Potatoes. The Band got their first gig at Maison in March 2020, and the very next day the whole city shut down due to the Covid Pandemic.

Fast forward to 2021, the city is reopened, and Amber was ready to finally pursue her dream of playing music in New Orleans. She revamped The Sweet Potatoes with a whole new line up and played her first show since 2019 at The Maison. During their first year, The Sweet Potatoes grew exponentially. They began playing numerous venues all over the city, including The Jazz Museum, private parties at the Beauregard Keyes House, and The Local Swing Dance’s 10 year anniversary party. They also recorded their first album entitled "Too Sweet".

During their second year, they started playing at The Spotted Cat, and soon after played French Quarter Fest 2024 and Ultimate Lindy Hop Show Down, two events Amber was elated to be a part of. Now the band has released their second album "Pipin’ Hot!".

Alvin Lee was a fine blues guitarist and very speedy but nowhere near lots of shredders these days. For instance, Davide Lo Surdo has been clocked at 129 notes per second. By comparison, B.B. King took all day to lay down a handful of notes but there are few, if any, guitarists who can reach into your soul like he could. It isn’t about how fast you get there, its about enjoying the journey.

This is one of only a few surviving recordings, and it’s significant because of the phrasings and the lexicon in the song. There’s a different meanings for black tape on your door today, but in the time frame of this song, it meant a period of mourning was being observed by the occupant.

Alvin Jett & the Hired Help - Live In Soulard

Jett was born in 1960 and grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois, in a large family of thirteen children. His father played drums with blues legends Little Milton and Albert King, and he gave Jett his first guitar. After his discharge from the Navy in his early twenties, Jett threw himself into music, and like many aspiring bluesmen in the St. Louis area, he learned from the elder statesmen of his day, particularly Tommy Bankhead, with whom he played for three years in the Blues Eldorados.

Jett was a regular contributor to the St. Louis Blues Society and its Guitar Masters concert series, and he is remembered for hosting numerous jam sessions in which he encouraged and mentored a younger generation of musicians. The bands he led included the Alvin Jett Band, Jett Sett, No Exit, the Hired Help and ultimately Phat noiZ, the group for which he's now best remembered. With Phat noiZ he recorded three albums -- Wet My Beak, Milk and Cookies and Honeybowl -- and garnered awards from the International Blues Challenge and the International Songwriting Competition.

In 2012, Jett moved to San Francisco to live with his brothers and, as Bauer says, "get his life back on track." He continued to perform in San Francisco and, according to Bauer, he was practicing his guitar when he died of a heart attack on the day before Christmas Eve.

Bill 'Howl-N-Madd' Perry - The Clarksdale Sessions

Album: The Clarksdale Sessions
Size: 102,5 MB

1. Saturday Night (3:44)
2. Burglary In Progress (5:08)

4. It's Your Life (4:29)
5. Delta Women (3:32)

8. Banks Of The River (3:18)
9. Find A Reason To Believe (4:03)
10. Wanna Cook For Ya (3:34)
11. Over The Rainbow (3:12)

Bill “Howl-N-Madd” Perry is the delta blues musician who’s incredible story find him rubbing shoulders and playing behind Little Richard, J.J Taylor, & Little Milton, working as a session musician on Chess Records, honored with a blues trail marker, and being an integral part of the blues for decades. The latest from Perry, The Clarksdale Sessions, finds the singer exploring his depths while keeping a familiar feel to his trademark sound.

“Saturday Night” is a righteous cross between jump blues and a rock n roll throwback – all around a lot of fun to listen to. The combination of Mandolin and harmonica on “Oh what a Feeling” make the track a valuable & powerful addition to the album. Several of the tracks are staunchly traditional blues. “Delta Woman”, which Perry performed live at the recent celebrated Blessissippi Crossroads Concert, is a great little number about, what else?! A number of tracks are deftly enhanced by a horn presence, which graces the album with a soulful feeling.

Overall, The Clarksdale Sessions are both a representation of Perry’s well-known live energy, and a further exploration of the depth of the artist’s abilities. Two standout tracks are a pair of brilliantly picked covers, “Reason to Believe”, made famous by Rod Stewart, and “Over the Rainbow”, which was a fitting choice for Perry’s unique vocals and personality, accented by a beautiful piano backing. “Believe”, with it’s pronounced horn, B3, and backing vocals, is the perfect fit for Perry’s endearing, gravelly voice. The album was recorded in the heart of downtown Clarksdale at Clarksdale Soundstage Recording Studio, which is owned by Gary Vincent, who also produced Sessions and contributed to several tracks. Perry’s band is a family affair, with his daughter, Sharo Perry and son, Bill Perry, Jr. contributing on vocals and piano. /Matt Marshall, American Blues Scene

10. My Younger Days (3:35)
11. I'll Be Around (4:02)

Mystic Chiefs, the third album by Southern California blues shouter Johnny Ray Jones, is a hard-hitting 11-track collection that pays homage to generations of the region's best blues and roots bands including Canned Heat, the James Harman Band, the Blasters, the Red Devils, and the Blue Shadows and introduces a powerhouse new band featuring some of the genre's most skilled and exciting players. Jones brings four decades of experience in SoCal's clubs to the table; along the way he has sung beside such titans as Big Joe Turner, Lee Allen, Sam "Bluzman" Taylor, Phillip Walker, John Fogerty and Coco Montoya; he has shared stages with John Mayall, Leon Russell, Jeff Healy, Janiva Magness, Walter Trout, the Knitters, and the Blasters.

Jones' two previous albums for the Moondogg label, Feet Back in the Door (2017) and Way Down South (2021), were storming collections featuring Jones' potent vocal interpretations of blues, soul, R&B, and swamp rock classics. Mystic Chiefs, which features Jones' titular new group, is a crackling set of tough blues numbers originated by such masters as Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, Slim Harpo, and Joe Hill Louis.

Five of the songs are drawn from the live repertoire of the Red Devils, the burnin' '90s Los Angeles blues unit fronted by harmonica ace Lester Butler; Jones sat in with the group during the era when they recorded King King, the ripping live album produced by Rick Rubin at the storied L.A. neighborhood joint and backed Mick Jagger on a legendary unreleased studio album. Mystic Chiefs was produced by Jones and recorded and mixed by Johnny Lee Schell at his Ultratone Studios in Studio City, CA. Schell, who continues as a rhythm guitarist in the Mystic Chiefs, has recorded with Bonnie Raitt (including on her multi-platinum 1989 album Nick of Time, which received the Grammy Award as Album of the Year), Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, B.B. King, Taj Mahal, Etta James, Ronnie Wood, and Joe Cocker.

The other players in the new band are a Who's Who of rockin' SoCal blues and roots music: lead guitarist Junior Watson (co-founder of the Mighty Flyers and guitarist for Canned Heat and William Clark); pianist Carl Sonny Leyland (keyboardist for Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys); harp player Tex Nakamura (successor to Lee Oskar in War); bassist John Bazz (founding member of the Blasters); percussionist Stephen Hodges (noted for drumming an percussion work behind Tom Waits, Mavis Staples, and James Harman); and drummer J.R. Lozano (who played with his father, Los Lobos bassist Conrad Lozano, on the East L.A. band's Grammy-Winning album Native Sons). Sung, written, and played by the best, Mystic Chiefs is as close as you can get at home to a night in a blues club where the lights are low and the house is shakin'. /Amazon

Personnel: Johnny Ray Jones (vocals); Junior Watson (lead guitar); Johnny Lee Schell (rhythm guitar); Tex Nakamura (harmonica); John Bazz (bass); J.R. Lozano (drums); Stephen Hodges (percussion); Carl Sonny Leyland (piano).

Altered Five Blues Band - Holler If You Hear Me

11. Leave Before I Let You Down (4:21)
12. Fifteen Minutes Of Blame (4:09)
13. Big Shout Out (3:12)

Altered Five smokes, smolders and burns like a swig of good whiskey. The hip Milwaukee quintet is known for its strong brew of tough, original blues and hard-hitting live shows. Blues Blast raves that barrel-chested front man Jeff Taylor possesses a “smooth, warm-toned voice as monumental and undeniable as Howlin’ Wolf with the finish and flourish of B.B. King.” Downbeat declares stealth guitarist Jeff Schroedl “reaches the high bar of mixed invention and fluidity.” Fueled by a rhythm section laying down the deepest grooves this side of the MGs, the five blues blasters hit the ground running 22 years ago and show no sign of easing up. Their seventh studio recording, Testifyin', was released March 22, 2024 on Blind Pig Records.

The new EP kicks hard like the four award-winning records preceding it. Cryin’ Mercy nabbed “Best Self-Released Album” at the International Blues Challenge in 2015. Charmed & Dangerous garnered "Song of the Year" at the Independent Music Awards and Wisconsin Music Awards in 2018. Guitar World magazine called the title track a “menacing, swampy blues" and it was in regular rotation on SiriusXM’s Bluesville in addition to many other programs and playlists. In 2019, Ten Thousand Watts reached #10 on the Billboard Blues Chart, hit #1 on both the iTunes and Amazon blues charts, while "Great Minds Drink Alike" captured first place in the blues category of the International Songwriting Competition. Holler If You Hear Me debuted at #3 on the Billboard Blues Chart and received three Blues Music Award nominations, including Album of the Year and Song of the Year. Their 20th Anniversary vinyl LP featured "Great Minds Drink Alike (With Horns)" which also received a BMA nod for Song of the Year. All band members contribute as a songwriting team to be reckoned with. Memorable, incisive lyrics run the gamut from slyly suggestive ("Ten Thousand Watts") to blues history tributes ("Three Forks") and inventive contemporary themes (“Urgent Care,” “Back Button”).

Altered Five have consistently checked all the boxes, making lasting, deeply expressive original blues for the mind and body. Up front and leading the big blues train, Taylor exhorts and cajoles while carrying the weight of the lyrical content. Neither imitating nor hiding his debt to the legendary blues singers of the past, he commands deserved attention on his own. Schroedl propels, embellishes, and adds palpable power through his varied rhythm accompaniment and riveting guitar solos. While inspired by, but not tethered to the kings and titans of blues guitar, he has found his own estimable path to personal expression always at the service of the song. The muscular yet limber rhythm section of bassist Mark Solveson and drummer Alan Arber lock into the full range of blues grooves from classic slow Chicago drag ("Holding on With One Hand") and romping Texas shuffles ("Mint Condition") to soulful R&B worthy of Stax Records ("Gonna Lose My Lady"). In addition, returning keyboardist Steve Huebler always provides a rich pad of lush harmony along with his own and soaring solos.

Whether live or on record, Altered Five performs seamlessly as a powerhouse entity encompassing the timeless blues virtues of passion and unwavering commitment funneled through technical excellence.

It’s usually easier to stay artistically relevant as blues artist’s age. There’s a gravitas about life musicians acquire which speaks to the general themes of loss and frustrations informing much of the genre’s music. Still, the rigors of performing, recording and traveling are substantial, especially with the lifestyle most under-the-radar non-pop artists need to deal with. But when the music is in your blood, as is the case with so many bluesmen and women who left it all on the stage well into their later years, it’s not something that can be dismissed regardless of how many candles are lighting up, and weighing down, that birthday cake.

At 80, award-winning, singer/songwriter and fiery pianist Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne is a model of how to navigate the ravages of time in his chosen style of music. Born in the US but living in Canada for decades, Wayne hasn’t let his elder status slow him down, at least as it pertains to releasing new music. The terrific ‘Ooh Yeah!’, his fifth album in the past eight years, is his most diverse. It also earns its exclamation point with a potent, animated performance belying Wayne’s age.

From the stomping double-time boogie-woogie of the frisky title track, a natural opening salvo for this album and likely for shows, to the Latin rhumba rhythm percolating under the bubbly instrumental “Sailing with the Sunset” (a clear reference to New Orleans/Professor Longhair influences) and the 70s soul stirrings of the rain as a reflection of his depression on “It’s Pouring Down” (inspired by the Temptations’ Motown soul), Wayne displays his vocal, songwriting and keyboard expertise on these dozen fresh, often invigorating originals.

The chugging beat and hammering piano of “Baby, I’m Your Man” is energized by a vibrant but never overbearing three-piece horn section employed on about half these tracks. As producer, Wayne understands dynamics, letting the talents of his backing band flow into his leading groove. He brings supple funk on the thumping “Blacklist,” questioning why he’s frustrated that his romantic interest is suddenly not responding (“what did I do wrong to make you feel this way?”). The acoustic piano that dominates shifts to electric, recalling Ray Charles, another obvious touchstone.

But the most fascinating, and unusual, instrumentation features multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Bowskill’s banjo. He brings unlikely yet inspired bluegrass picking to the funk/gospel/country inflected “Try It Out,” displaying the breadth of Wayne’s inspirations and how, even at this late stage of life, he’s open to pushing the boundaries of his sound. That doesn’t work as well on the ballad “I Wish Things Were Different,” a well-meaning but syrupy attempt at turning him into a George Benson crooner. He’s far better sticking to the rollicking basics, pounding out the raucous “Honey, Honey, Honey” like he’s channeling the spirit of Jerry Lee Lewis, or laying into a sultry vibe on the smooth, bluesy R&B of “Wishing Well.”

The most impressive aspect of the spirited ‘Ooh Yeah!’ is Wayne’s voice. There is no trace of his age in the youthful, even feisty vocals which, along with his energetic keyboard playing, appear to be springing from someone at least half his advanced years. Maybe like Willie Nelson, still vibrant at 91, Kenny ‘Blues Boss’ Wayne, has plenty of gas left in his tank. Here’s hoping he maintains this level of artistry for the foreseeable future. /Hal Horowitz, Rock & Blues Muse

9. Madd In Paradise (Further South Than The Blues) (6:01)

The Legendary Blues Band - Prime Time Blues

The Legendary Blues Band includes Calvin Jones (b.1926, Greenwood, Mississippi; bass, violin); Willie Smith (b.1935, Helena, Arkansas; drum); various others on vocals, guitar, harmonica, and piano. When the Muddy Waters band quit the master en masse in 1980, most of the sidemen stuck together and formed their own group. The Legendary Blues Band, as they were named, included Pinetop Perkins, Jerry Portnoy, Willie Smith, and Calvin Jones throughout its early years. Short-term member Louis Myers, another Muddy Waters alumnus, appeared as guitarist on the band's first album (Rounder, 1981).

The band has since changed personnel with some regularity, and while its lineup has become progressively less "legendary" in name and/or historic associations, its music has remained solid and true to the mainstream Chicago style. In a later configuration, they even made the Billboard Black Music charts. Recent albums have featured guitarist Billy Flynn and harmonicist Madison Slim. The rhythm section of Jones and Smith has anchored the unit throughout the changes, never failing to deliver the Chicago blues with aplomb. /Biography by Jim O'Neal, AllMusic

A fixture in the Southern California music scene since the 80’s, known mostly for his up-tempo 40’s style jump blues, Mike Arguello and his band 2000 Lbs Of Blues is doing something a little different this time around with the CD Soul Of A Sinner. Arguello isn’t leaving jump blues for good, only stretching his musical muscle and songwriting abilities with something a little deeper, a little edgier and even a little darker than his previous three CDs.

Soul Of A sinner is an unpredictable musical journey through a collection of soulfully interpreted, heartfelt songs. Twelve of the thirteen songs are original works that run the musical gamut from big-time gritty harmonica blues, to guitar-crunching funky rockers, a smooth Latin-jazzy number, all the way to a chest-pounding rap honoring the city of New Orleans. Never forgetting their well-loved roots, the band takes you on that journey via a wild, musical tightrope walk led by fearless bandleader Arguello, who, jumping from side to side, bouncing you up and down, crazily coming close, never lets you fall off.

Linton’s new album Break The Seal on Brassdog Records, is dedicated to his mother Ruby Naomi Linton whose sudden passing in 2003 gave Errol the deepest blues he has ever had to deal with. It comprises 10 tunes that reflect the struggles and joy of life in Britain today. As Errol says, “At least I’ve got the music to express my pain. Pain and joy – we play a lot of happy blues.”

The title track showcases five musicians at the top of their game, a combination of innovative harp attacks, keyboard flourishes, tasteful lead guitar interludes and Errol’s trademark silky, impassioned vocals. The listener is transported to an intimate late night jazz or blues bar on a warm summer evening. /American Blues Scene

While most people associate the blues with the steamy bayous of Louisiana and the cotton fields of Mississippi, lovers of the devil's music may be surprised to hear that there is also a thriving scene in Scandinavia. At the heart of this Nordic blues explosion are the Wentus Blues Band, who hail from Kokkola in central Finland. And while the pinestudded wilderness of their homeland is about as far as you can get from the jukejoints of the Deep South, there's no doubting their musical credentials.

Established in 1986, the band have acquired a reputation as the hardest working in Scandinavia and play around 150 gigs a year. The Wentus Blues Band has toured in 17 different countries, released 10 albums, done several TV-shows, headlined festivals and toured with many great bluesmen. Expect explosive blues and frantic rhythm and blues, played with laid back stylishness.

4. Good Old Days (4:53)
5. Chicago Breakdown (5:32)
6. Blues Attack (3:24)
7. Missed Opportunities (2:20)

A good Chicago style blues rock album from blues veteran Frank Raven and his experienced band. Don't expect any guitar heroics. Dave Menet's playing is concise with no wasted notes, but he gets the message across. An album obviously recorded for the love of the blues. The Frank Raven Band is just one of the many bands out there who's name you won't often see up in lights, but these bands are continually on the sidelines, and keeping the blues alive. They put their music before dollars and deserve more recognition. Buy the Raven Desmond Songs "Best Of The Blues" album and support these bands
