Every year, the Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival holds what's called the Galaxie Rising Star competition. Groups and performers from all over the province are invited to submit, and it's open to acts that haven't played the festival before. To point out how important this event has been, the very first winner of the competition was a group called Flat Top, and that was the first anyone had heard of Matt Andersen, back in 2001. Other winners since have included Ross Neilsen, Andy Brown and Keith Hallett, so obviously, the competition attracts solid talent.

Last year, the winner was the Kendra Gale Band from St. Andrews. It was a well-timed win for Gale. She's been performing professionally since high school, for several years as a songwriter and solo performer. A couple of years back, she did quite a 180-move in her career. Down went the acoustic, and she grabbed an electric guitar, added drummer Warren (yes that's my real name) Beatteay, and became a band, a hard-rockin' blues band in fact. It was quite a transformation and obviously a successful one, as she hasn't looked back since. It's a cool sound, just guitar and bass, lots of volume, and some pretty affirmative lyrics. The quiet teenager had turned into a straight-talking, confident woman. ~Bob Mersereau
