His extroverted antics and multi-colored fright wig might invite the instant dismissal of Cincinnati-based singer Robert "H-Bomb" Ferguson as some sort of comic lightweight. In reality, he's one of the last survivors of the jump blues era whose once-slavish Wynonie Harris imitations have mellowed into a highly distinctive vocal delivery of his own. Ferguson's dad, a reverend, paid for piano lessons for his son, demanding he stick to sacred melodies on the 88s. Fat chance - by age 19, Bobby was on the road with Joe Liggins & the Honeydrippers. When they hit New York, Ferguson branched off on his own. Comedian Nipsey Russell, then emcee at Harlem's Baby Grand Club, got the singer a gig at the nightspot. Back then, Ferguson was billed as "the Cobra Kid."

Singles for Derby, Atlas, and Prestige preceded a 1951-1952 hookup with Savoy Records that produced some of Ferguson's best waxings. Most of them were obvious Harris knockoffs, but eminently swinging ones with top-flight backing (blasting saxists Purvis Henson and Count Hastings were aboard the dates). Drummer Jack "The Bear" Parker, who played on the Savoy dates, allegedly bestowed the singer with his explosive monicker. Other accounts credit Savoy producer Lee Magid with coining H-Bomb's handle; either way, his dynamite vocals fulfilled the billing.

Ferguson eventually made Cincinnati his home, recording for Finch, Big Bang, ARC, and the far more prestigious Federal in 1960. H-Bomb terminated his touring schedule in the early '70s. When he returned from premature retirement, his unique wig-wearing shtick (inspired by Rick James' coiffure) was in full bloom. Backed by his fine young band, the Medicine Men, Ferguson waxed his long-overdue debut album, Wiggin' Out, for Chicago's Earwig logo in 1993. It showed him to be as wild as ever (witness the gloriously sleazy "Meatloaf"), a talented pianist to boot, and more his own man than ever before. H-Bomb became a regular on the blues and R&B festival circuit, keeping Cincinnati as his home base until his death there on November 26, 2006. /Biography by Bill Dahl, AllMusic

This is an outstanding collection from the vaults of King and its subsidiary labels, Federal and Deluxe. These 24 tracks collect jump blues, doo wop, piano boogie, and outright bizarre novelties stretching from the late '40s through the early '60s. There is not a bad track on Mule Milk 'N' Firewater, featuring plenty of well-known names on mainly wild up-tempo songs by Roy Brown, Big Jay McNeely, Little Willie John, Hank Ballad & the Midnighters, and Jack Dupree. There are a few standouts amongst these rarities that may raise a few eyebrows. "Ring a Ling Dong" is from 1955 by Rudy Moore aka Rudy Ray Moore of Dolomite fame, and "Davy, You Upset My Home" finds a young Joe Tex vividly describing how his domestic situation is being torn apart by his girlfriend's unhealthy obsession with all things Davy Crockett! Unbelievable! ~Al Campbell

Long before his 1990s re-emergence as a fright wig wearing blues star, Robert "H-Bomb" Ferguson had recorded a series of Wynonie Harris-styled jump blues singles in the '40s and '50s for a variety of labels and under various names, including several as the Cobra Kid. Although he was so close to Harris' delivery and repertoire on these sides that most critics dismissed him as an outright clone, Ferguson's booming, wink-and-a-smile voice was obviously something special. Ferguson first recorded under the moniker H-Bomb in 1951 when he signed with Savoy Records, and the name stuck. This generous 31-track collection from Rev-Ola Records includes Ferguson's Savoy tracks, as well as sides he cut for the Atlas, Prestige and Esquire labels between 1951 and 1954, and features such gems as "Rock H-Bomb Rock," "On My Way," "Preachin' the Blues," "Bookie's Blues," and his best known tune, "Good Lovin'." Discouraged with the direction of his career, Ferguson took up residence in Cincinnati, OH in 1957, where he was content to be a regional treasure (all the while experimenting with increasingly bizarre wigs and headgear) until his debut album, Wiggin' Out, was released in 1993 on Chicago's Earwig Records. The album established Ferguson as a true original in his own right, and gave the colorful singer a national stage until his death in 2006. The joy and energy obvious in these early sides makes the Harris comparisons merely academic at this point, and these are wonderful examples of late period jump blues by any measure. Unfortunately Rev-Ola (who are usually pretty reliable) dropped the ball on this one by seriously messing up the running order on the printed CD cover, inside booklet and even on the CD label itself. The music is great, but it unfolds in an entirely different sequence than what is listed. ~by Steve Leggett

Blues ‘N’ Boogie is a unique collection of obscure, fun tunes dating from 1945-52. From the onset, the compilation does a nice job of placing this form of black jazz into historic context. Spanning through 18 tracks, this record showcases some genuine honkers (Big Jay McNeely) and shouters (Helen Humes). Also included are rare gems by Little Miss Sharecropper and a young man named Sonny Wilson, who are better known now as LaVern Baker and Jackie Wilson respectively. Not all the performers on this collection became so well known as those recognizable names, but they were integral in keeping the scene alive and pumping. These particular blues and boogies are often filtered through the sound of the big band style arrangements so popular during WWII and the early post-war years, which really sets these tunes as period pieces, though that hardly matters here. This is music of a particular moment in time. ~Barbara Flaska

R&B sounds completely realized during the 1951-’55 period are covered on the third disc, Things Have Changed. However, Savoy was now competing with Atlantic and other heavyweight record companies for talent and the 21 songs present are of variable quality. Singer Nappy Brown, flaunting his trademark trill, is killer on two tunes, but cuts by Washington aspirant Varetta Dillard, teenager Earl King in New Orleans and doo-wop sentimentalists the Dreams (supposedly with Charles Mingus on bass) are no great shakes. Fourth volume Hot Rod offers a sampling of what Savoy served up during the rock’n’ roll craze of the late ‘50s, from Hal Singer’s sax meltdown “Hot Rod,” to dynamite vocalist Big Maybelle’s “Candy” and “Blues Early,” to entertaining obscurities from secular gospellers Gay Poppers, Philadelphia band-leader-drummer Billy Hope and blues testifier Little Danny (Kittrell) with ace guitarist Jimmy Spruill. ~Frank John Haley

Various - The Last Shout! Twilight Of The Blues Shouters 1954-1962 (3-CD Set)

The forgotten superheroes of 20th-century black music, the leather-lunged blues shouters, dominated the US nightclub stages and R&B charts for half-a-dozen years or so following World War II, before being side-lined by the bourgeoning rock n roll storm in the early 1950s. Still considered a force with which to be reckoned in the US music industry of the mid-fifties, and still at the height of their vocal prowess, many of the biggest stars were granted one or two final shots to save their flagging recording careers during rock n roll s heyday - their Last Shout.

Compiled and annotated by R&B authority Dave Penny, this 3CD set from Fantastic Voyage endeavours to document the twilight of that proud musical genre and resurrect the ultimate releases from some of the great voices of R&B. The international blues boom of the 1960s - informed by the white Europeans predilection for more unsophisticated rural country blues and urban down-home blues, coupled with black America s progressive, wholesale acceptance of gospel-steeped soul and funk - served to entomb the art of the jump blues shouter further and to remove the memory of an exciting musical form from general consciousness, until it began to be exhumed decades later. Featuring singers famous and obscure, The Last Shout! serves the best of the final commercial recordings issued for the African-American R&B market by the likes of Big Joe Turner, Wynonie Harris, Jimmy Witherspoon and Eddie Cleanhead Vinson. When they no longer sold to their market, some, like Turner and Witherspoon, were able to make a comfortable living on the jazz circuit, others pursued alternative careers in comedy, preaching, composing or acting, yet others remained tragically determined; trying to maintain an ever-dwindling touring schedule on the chittlin circuit and drinking themselves into an early grave.

97 tracks and a 20pp illustrated booklet offer a snapshot of time in the history of black music, when the undiminished power of the classic blues shouters was married to the urgent rhythms of the rock n roll era, resulting in some very special music indeed!

Atlas Records was founded in 1951 by trumpeter Thomas Robinson, who located his headquarters in Harlem just down the street from the Apollo Theatre. Early on Atlas concentrated on releasing explosive jump blues sides before switching predominantly to vocal groups by the end of the decade. Robinson started a second record imprint, Angle Tone Records, in 1958, which again centered mostly on doo wop material, but the occasional jump blues track slipped through now and again. This blistering set brings together some of the great lost blues sides from the two labels, and for those only familiar with the vocal group material from Atlas and Angle Tone, it is quite a revelation. This is fire-breathing stuff, full of raw, loose sax runs and some scorching guitar, and the needle must have been buried in the red for all of these sessions. Among the standout tracks are the opener, "I Done Woke Up," featuring the flame-throwing slide guitar of Louisiana Red, the stomping "You Know You Don't Want Me" by guitarist Mojo Watson, James Wayne's muscular "This Little Letter," and baritone saxophonist Emmet Davis' rattling, ramshackle "Woke Up This Morning." This is quite the blues explosion indeed, with over an hour of energetic gutbucket dance blues, all of it featuring a delightfully ragged immediacy. ~Steve Leggett

This collection of twenty-five vintage blues vocals will help to illustrate the true scope of the record activities of the Atlas and Angletone labels, which up until now have only been represented on CDs by their vocal group recordings. The uniform quality of these recordings should help to dispel from the listener the mistaken belief that lack of commercial success is always due to poor musical content. These recordings can hold their own with anything that was coming out of New York during that era. Featuring the explosive H-Bomb Ferguson along with Mojo Watson, Louisiana Red, Mae Mercer, Piney Brown and many more. This collection marks the first CD release of these magnificent vintage recordings. A "must own" for vintage blues fans.
