12. Hole In My Shoe (4:08)

Covering the Peter Green title track may be a subliminal (or subconscious) way of reminding listeners of his early-’90s stint with Fleetwood Mac, but Vito was a Green devotee well before Green had vacated the band 20 years prior, let alone before joining the group himself. And that was just one stop on a road that’s also seen the guitarist popping up with Bob Seger, Roger McGuinn, Bonnie Raitt, Maria Muldaur, Jackson Browne, Glenn Frey, and the blues vanguard Green apprenticed with before forming Mac, John Mayall.

As the list above suggests, Vito can adapt to a multitude of situations, but here he and his Lucky Devils don’t stray far from roadhouse blues – the tone set by the opening Elmore James-inspired “My Baby’s Hot.” As evidenced by his original “The Lucky Devil,” Magic Sam is another of Rick’s heroes; he’s put words to Sam’s boogie instrumental “Lookin’ Good” – no mean feat, since playing the thing is hard enough, forget about trying to sing at the same time.

He reverses the formula on “A Change Is Gonna Come,” a moving instrumental arrangement of Sam Cooke’s timeless classic, featuring Vito’s haunting slide. The CD includes two other instrumentals: the relaxed, self-explanatory “Slide The Blues” and another Mac cover, “Albatross.” Even transferring parts of the melody to slide, as with “Rattlesnake,” Vito stays close to the original – perhaps a bit too much, instead of injecting more of his own personality. /Dean Danielson, Vintage Guitar Magazine

10. River's Calling (4:24)
11. You Can't Stop A Guitar (From Playing The Blues) (3:57)
12. Sliding Into Blue (3:46)

On his latest album, Cadillac Man, Rick Vito includes a song titled “You Can't Stop A Guitar (From Playing the Blues).” That could easily be the motto of Vito's long and successful musical career, and it's certainly the welcome theme of the Grammy-nominated guitarist's first album in five years.

Vito is probably best known for his role in the legendary supergroup Fleetwood Mac from 1987-1991, when he revived the rootsy blues feeling of the band’s early years. In 2008 he partnered with Mick Fleetwood to form the Mick Fleetwood Blues Band and was nominated for a 2010 Grammy in the Best Traditional Blues category as both artist and producer for the album Blue Again.

Vito’s unique slide and lead guitar work has enhanced hundreds of recordings and performances by such legendary artists as Bob Seger, Bonnie Raitt, John Mayall, Albert Collins, John Prine, and many more. Seger called his slide guitar solo on the song “Like A Rock,” “the single most spectacular solo I’d ever heard.” That's the solo that got massive exposure as the guitar voice on a Chevrolet truck commercial that ran from 1991 to 2004.
Vito has been cranking out solo albums since 1992, and Cadillac Man is his first since 2019's Soulshaker. This release of a dozen tracks shows off his haunting slide technique, his songwriting skills with some fresh new material, a welcome dip back into his musical past and one magical cover.

The album slides open with a gorgeous minute of tasty guitar on the sturdy shuffle of “Love Crazy Baby,” featuring another sparkling solo midway, offering a solid sample of what's coming down the tracks. Next up is “It's Two A.M.,” Vito's W.C. Handy Award-winning Song of the Year from 2001, sung then by Shemekia Copeland – “Yeah, I looked at the clock, I saw the time / I heard a voice ring out from the back of my mind / It’s 2 a.m., do you know where your baby is?” The title track chugs along next with Chuck Berry-esque guitar licks, auto-matically conjuring a sweet little road trip: “Take a ride with me baby / A steady rollin’ plan / I got the keys to the highway / I’m a Cadillac Man.”

The exotic “Little Sheba” hints at a woman of many mysteries: “She walks like an angel with a devil within / Tryin’ make you a present of a mortal sin.” The flowing instrumental “Bo In Paradise” follows with its own haunting melody. Another Cadillac drives up in the romping tale, “Gone Like A Cool Breeze” – “We were out in my Ford just cruisin’ by / When a guy in a Cadillac winked his eye / And she was gone.” The solemn ballad “Crying At Midnight” slows things down with a soulful vocal turn: “I was a fool, and I can never make it right / I lost my love forever, and now I’m / Crying at midnight.”

The easy rocking “Barbeque’n Baby” cooks up a bite of slide and adds some lyrical spice: “Well she brought me to her kitchen, and she rattled her pots and pans / Well that BB Baby knew just how to serve a hungry man.” The only cover on the album is Vito's simply gorgeous instrumental interpretation of the gospel song, “Just Another Day,” by Sam Cooke and the Soul Stirrers.

“River's Calling” flows along gently with Vito's vocals forming a duet with himself in a poignant lament as his guitar gently weeps: “I went down to the river / And I stood there on the shore / I heard the river calling / He said the world don’t need you no more.” Vito's sinewy guitar highlights “You Can’t Stop A Guitar (From Playing The Blues)” -- “You know that guitar ain’t lyin’.” His extended muscular solos aptly demonstrate the truth of the title.

The serene instrumental closer, “Sliding Into Blues,” is a masterwork in slide, pouring all the purity of Vito's magical guitar into one final sublime emotional statement. Cadillac Man is delightful testimony that, after all, you can't stop a guitar from playing the blues. ~Jim White

Included here are ten original Vito compositions which are some of his most compelling to date. Rick also performs songs from L.A. hipster Preston Smith, England's Big Town Playboys, and one from his favorite swing vocal groups from the 1930's, The Spirits of Rhythm.

Each cut on the CD features the dazzling saxophone work of Jim Hoke, who layered both tenor and baritone sax to create a unique small horn section sound which stands apart from a typical "big band" approach. Drummers Ian Wallace (El Rayo X, Bob Dylan), Rick Reed (Amazing Rhythm Aces), and Greg Thomas (Thunderbyrd), all make their mark in tandem with the rocking acoustic bass of "Big" Dave Roe (Johnny Cash), Glen Worf (Mark Knopfler), Peter Feiberger, and Lee Hendricks.

Many concert favorites are included here such as long-awaited "Blues Town", the cool-rockin' "Little Sheba", "Last Chance To Mambo", and Rick’s tribute to America's favorite 50's pinup girl in "Where Did You Go Bettie Page?". Mick Fleetwood rates this CD among his favorites of all time and has this to say: “A total pleasure - absolutely incredible, impeccable, and soulful. Rick nailed some very serious stuff here. I love the album!”

Slide guitar fans are, no doubt, eagerly awaiting the new release of slide-master Rick Vito’s Soulshaker album. Playing in peak form after an already extensive and award-winning career, Vito’s guitar and voice power this crackerjack 12 song collection with some real heart and soul, making it as much a celebration as it is a showcase for his guitar prowess. Expect to have yourself a good time.

Multiple Grammy nominee, Rick Vito was a member of the supergroup, Fleetwood Mac and has lent his unique slide and lead guitar work to the recordings and performances of artists including Bonnie Raitt, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, John Fogerty, Bob Seger, Boz Scaggs, Dolly Parton, Delbert McClinton, Roy Orbison, Jackson Browne and many others.

Listeners are invited into Soulshaker with the welcoming and likable, “She’s Just Too Fine,” a straight-ahead toe-tapper that Vito’s slide still finds room to swerve around and groove in. In an immediate hint at the range you should expect on this album, the next tune peels off in an almost experimental direction with Eastern sitar-like pulses and rhythms that uncoil slowly like a snake in the moonlight. Rick’s nearly whispered vocals add another layer of hoodoo, which in turn tees up a spooky and effective slide break. This tune especially is a testament to some seriously mature songwriting chops. ~Tom O’Connor

Rick Vito - Crazy Cool

[3:43] 8. Money And Love
[2:57] 9. Crazy Cool
[4:04] 10. Love Is Dangerous

Over the course of the last decade Rick Vito has established a strong solo recording career, mixing and melding styles to come up with a fresh, unique sound all his own. No matter the vibe - be it the growling pop rock of KING OF HEARTS, his 1992 debut, the more traditionally blues-orientated sway of 98's PINK & BLACK or the swamp-boogie groove of LUCKY DEVILS from 2000 - Vito has always given his heart and soul to his music, stretching and growing, yet at the same time honoring where he has come from and where he has been. That's why CRAZY COOL is such a joy. It's a perfect amalgamation of all of his previous releases, while it's also the most commercial thing he's done since his days in Fleetwood Mac (a group who's vibe is VERY present!). There's also an intimacy to the disc - like you're listening to Vito and friends perform in the studio or at a small club - that is totally captivating. Opening the CD are "Mr. Lucky" and "Going Home", songs penned, respectively, by John Lee Hooker and B.B. King. Vito gives both tracks a reverential spin, while still updating them with his own sound and feel - just the way all great modern bluesmen do! Next up is the pulsating "Rockin' Just To Keep From Cryin'." With it's Robert Cray-meets-John Hiatt vibe, the track features one of Vito's best lead vocals yet, as well as some subdued, but spot-on, guitar work. "No Love In The City" is scorching blues, pure and simple; a Vito original, you could swear it was really an old standard from Chicago, circa 1929. "You Put A Spell On Me" would have fit very nicely on Fleetwood Mac's BEHIND THE MASK album, whatwith it's staccato, in-your-face drumming and smooth, playful lyrics (I can totally hear Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks doing backing vocals on this track!). Vito lets loose with a blast of guitar that is both tasty and understated. "One Short Life" could have also fit on MASK, if mainly for it's Billy Burnette-like qualities. The song's country-tinged melancholy adds a unique balance to the rest of the disc, and Vito's vocal is tender, heartfelt and sincere. Ditto the blues/rockabilly hybrid that is "Everybody Gets Lucky Sometime." Like the little engine that could, this one starts slow, building in intensity as it goes and grows. A really fun track, plain and simple! Next we have two of the CD's best cuts, the rollicking "Money And Love" and the jam-kickin' title track. "Money And Love" is an odd little ditty.....part rockabilly, part power pop, with a touch of blues and a pinch of back porch picking, it starts off sounding like a throwaway session jam - and ends up a rousing little number that you KNOW will be killer live! "Crazy Cool" is pure rock.....loud, in your face and full of attitude. Vito's guitar is smoking, while his vocal makes it clear that he's having a blast! Crazy Cool indeed! Unfortunately, the disc ends on a less than sterling note; the remake of "Love Is Dangerous", while nice, pales in comparison to the original (mark my word, releasing "Love Is Dangerous" as BEHIND THE MASK's first single would have guaranteed that album MUCH greater success!) - this song needs the edge that Stevie Nicks brought to it. Which brings us to another point......while Vito's vocals have improved with each release, they still have a workman-like quality (less here than ever before, though) that, after ten or so songs, causes it all to sort of run together. He needs to break things up with a female duet partner.....say, Nicks or Bonnie Raitt, or at least backing vocals by Rosie Flores. But that's nitpicking. The truth is, CRAZY COOL is a brilliant summation of everywhere Rick Vito has been the last twenty-five years......and, more importantly, where he's going in the future. ~Jef Fazekas

CD 2 - Bonus:
1. Albatross (3:15)
2. Napili Noctourne (3:38)
3. The Supernatural (3:00)
4. La Mer D'Amour (4:20)

The title Blue Again is a giveaway: like many old rock & rollers, Mick Fleetwood returns to his first love - the blues - forming the aptly named Mick Fleetwood Blues Band with former Mac running mate Rick Vito on guitar and vocals, Lenny Castellanos on bass, and Mark Johnstone on keyboards.

The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band hit the road in 2008 and Blue Again captures their February 2008 show at the Sheldon Concert Hall in St. Louis, MO, which was a gig not unlike the others on the tour: the group ran through several old Peter Green standards like "Rattlesnake Shake" and "Black Magic Woman" and a bunch of originals by Vito, ending with a cover of Elmore James' "Shake Your Moneymaker."

Unless the new tunes by Vito are counted - and arguably they should, as they fit nicely with Green's - there are no surprises here, just straight-up blues-rock played by old pros who are steadily whittling away the rock to get closer to a purer blues. If Vito's singing is a little bit too smooth and the execution occasionally a bit too on the nose, there is nevertheless an energy and vigor to the spirit here that is wholly welcome and, when it all comes together, even infectious. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AllMusic

[ 3:57] 6. Table Top Girl
[ 3:38] 7. Lady

Bass – Larry Taylor; Drums – Roy McCurdy, Soko Richardson; Guitar – Rick Vito; Percussion – Buck Clarke; Performer – John Mayall; Piano – Jay Spell; Saxophone – Red Holloway; Trombone – Benny Powell; Trumpet – Blue Mitchell; Vocals – Dee McKinnie, Ronnie Barron. Recorded at Total Experience Studios, Los Angeles in May 1976 (except Table Top Girl recorded at Seasaint Studios, New Orleans).

Though Mayall's 70's material majorly suffers next to his 60's output, "A banquet in blues" is one of his better 70's outings and probably the best from Mayall's Rick Vito days. The brisk opening shouter "Sunshine" features a bright and tasty Blue Mitchell trumpet solo and also has John McVie on bass, effective in the up stairs tumbler sound. Rick here is on vocals (presumably in with the shouting verse sections) and on rhythm guitar (which you can hear thinly in the background of the grumble). In fact, Rick is on every track on the album in one way or another except one, which is the horn & piano led bland mid temp track "Lady" so it's probably just as well he's not on that one. "You can't put me down" is a fast shuffle with a slight disco feel, Rick plays lead guitar and also does (background?) vocals on this one. Rick also lends vocals to the album's best track, the closing "Fantasyland", at 14 minutes, the beginning and end are flute led with more chanting verses (so I'd imagine he's singing in those parts) and then the middle section is suspenseful swirling, fiddle scratching and guitar strumming meanderings which also includes a quiet but effective bass solo by one time Peter Green sidekick Alex Dimochowski. Rick plays rhythm guitar on the dragging skipper "I got somebody" (which mainly features a bass/drums chug) and funk laden track "Turn me loose" (which also has disco possibilities but that side is not as evident on the cupped horn sections which are nicely placed on this one) and Vito also is listed as guitar for the dated sounding but nonetheless enjoyable "Seven days too long" (which is almost pop/rock as the blues hides behind that shield here) and the hard to take serious "Table top girl" (a somewhat pulsing track). It's doubtful anyone would ever recommend you get any 70's Mayall releases before anything else he's done but when the time comes when you do wish to listen to some, this would probably be your best bet from the pack. ~John Fitzgerald

It is a treat to hear these great guest players trade off solos with Verheyen, and especially fun since they all have very unique styles. My favorite is probably Bonamassa and Henderson's appearances - some wickedly tasty licks and lines happening there by both the guests and Carl!

There are a couple of songs that are a bit dull and boring, but the rest of the tracks make up for that. Lots of great tunes. By the way, Carl sings really good too, this was a pleasant surprise! Great voice. ~DolphinStreet

Contains 11 tracks, 8 originals, plus great new version of the Peter Green-penned title track, and an instrumental take on Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come," that is not to be missed! Brand new studio release by Fleetwood Mac guitar master Rick Vito. His brand new album "Mojo On My Side" showcases Rick's, unique, blues-style, slide guitar. Blues Rock in the tradition of Fleetwood Mac with a swing influence.

The emphasis on this new CD is on basically guitar-bass-and drums arrangement with a small help by horns. The music can be described as "guitar-driven," "bluesy," or "rootsy," but in all cases it is very "American." Rick´s philosophy when making a new CD is to try and blend the traditional with something new and unique. He does not stray too far from his roots, because he is comfortable here because that is his best skills.

His new CD stays true to this tradition and will appeal to anyone who appreciates solid rhythms, tasty guitar work and cool songs played, not to conform to any current trends, but for the sheer love of the excitement of the music!
