Lightnin' Hopkins, american country blues singer, songwriter and guitarist.
Born: 15 March 1912, Centerville, Leon County, Texas, USA. - Died: 30 January 1982, Houston, Texas, USA.

In 1920, Hopkins met the legendary Blind Lemon Jefferson at a social function and got a chance to play with him.

His cousin was Texas Alexander. While they were playing together in Houston in 1946, he was discovered by Lola Anne Cullum of Los Angeles' Aladdin Records. Hopkins first recorded with pianist Wilson Smith and the pair were dubbed 'Lightning' & 'Thunder' to add some dynamic to their marketing.

Strong recordings followed from Hopkins, such as his song "Mojo Hand" (1960). He later inspired many artists such as Jimmie Vaughan, Townes Van Zandt and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan.

Often miscredited for writing the 1954 Chuck Willis' song "I Feel So Bad" covered by Little Milton and Elvis Presley among others. He also wrote a song by the same name released in 1947 on Aladdin (6) and in 1962 on Imperial.

This essential LP edition presents one of Hopkins’ finest albums, "Mojo Hand", which was originally issued in 1962 on Bobby Robinson’s label, Fire Records. (The LP would be retitled Lightnin’ Hopkins just two years later for the Sphere Sounds imprint re-release, featuring a different cover-sleeve.) Mojo Hand is widely regarded as one of the true masterpieces from Hopkins’ catalog. The material ranges from classic blues to R&B-flavored numbers. There’s even a charming novelty Christmas blues, titled “Santa.” These are moody and powerful performances. Despite the variety, the album is remarkably cohesive because Hopkins’ amalgamation of styles can be heard within each song.

Newly Remastered From The Analog Tapes; Limited Edition with Bonus Tracks. Lightnin’ Hopkins is widely considered one of the great popular architects of the blues style that came be known as “country blues” and which proved to be huge influence on the future development of Rock ‘n’ Roll. “Mojo Hand” was one of Hopkins‘ signature tunes. Mixing his own style with Louisiana Creole and voodoo culture, the song ripples with an occult energy. This album, recorded for Fire Records, is especially interesting because it casts Hopkins in a more R&B-flavored environment. This obvious effort to get a hit takes for some excellent blues; moody and powerful performances play throughout. The Penguin Guide to Blues Recordings wrote that ""Lightnin' is focussed and businesslike and delivers a strong and varied sequence of songs; the bassist and drummer unobtrusive but very much there”.

Sam Hopkins was a Texas country bluesman of the highest caliber whose career began in the 1920s and stretched all the way into the 1980s. Along the way, Hopkins watched the genre change remarkably, but he never appreciably altered his mournful Lone Star sound, which translated onto both acoustic and electric guitar. Hopkins' nimble dexterity made intricate boogie riffs seem easy, and his fascinating penchant for improvising lyrics to fit whatever situation might arise made him a beloved blues troubadour.

Hopkins' brothers John Henry and Joel were also talented bluesmen, but it was Sam who became a star. In 1920, he met the legendary Blind Lemon Jefferson at a social function, and even got a chance to play with him. Later, Hopkins served as Jefferson's guide. In his teens, Hopkins began working with another pre-war great, singer Texas Alexander, who was his cousin. A mid-'30s stretch in Houston's County Prison Farm for the young guitarist interrupted their partnership for a time, but when he was freed, Hopkins hooked back up with the older bluesman.

The pair was dishing out their lowdown brand of blues in Houston's Third Ward in 1946 when talent scout Lola Anne Cullum came across them. She had already engineered a pact with Los Angeles-based Aladdin Records for another of her charges, pianist Amos Milburn, and Cullum saw the same sort of opportunity within Hopkins' dusty country blues. Alexander wasn't part of the deal; instead, Cullum paired Hopkins with pianist Wilson "Thunder" Smith, sensibly re-christened the guitarist "Lightnin'," and presto! Hopkins was very soon an Aladdin recording artist.

"Katie May," cut on November 9, 1946, in L.A. with Smith lending a hand on the 88s, was Lightnin' Hopkins' first regional seller of note. He recorded prolifically for Aladdin in both L.A. and Houston into 1948, scoring a national R&B hit for the firm with his "Shotgun Blues." "Short Haired Woman," "Abilene," and "Big Mama Jump," among many Aladdin gems, were evocative Texas blues rooted in an earlier era.

A load of other labels recorded the wily Hopkins after that, both in a solo context and with a small rhythm section: Modern/RPM (his uncompromising "Tim Moore's Farm" was an R&B hit in 1949); Gold Star (where he hit with "T-Model Blues" that same year); Sittin' in With ("Give Me Central 209" and "Coffee Blues" were national chart entries in 1952) and its Jax subsidiary; the major labels Mercury and Decca; and, in 1954, a remarkable batch of sides for Herald where Hopkins played blistering electric guitar on a series of blasting rockers ("Lightnin's Boogie," "Lightnin's Special," and the amazing "Hopkins' Sky Hop") in front of drummer Ben Turner and bassist Donald Cooks (who must have had bleeding fingers, so torrid were some of the tempos).

But Hopkins' style was apparently too rustic and old-fashioned for the new generation of rock & roll enthusiasts (they should have checked out "Hopkins' Sky Hop"). He was back on the Houston scene by 1959, largely forgotten. Fortunately, folklorist Mack McCormick rediscovered the guitarist, who was dusted off and presented as a folk-blues artist; a role that Hopkins was born to play. Pioneering musicologist Sam Charters produced Hopkins in a solo context for Folkways Records that same year, cutting an entire LP, Lightnin' Hopkins, in Hopkins' tiny apartment (on a borrowed guitar). The results helped introduced his music to an entirely new audience.

Lightnin' Hopkins went from gigging at back-alley gin joints to starring at collegiate coffeehouses, appearing on TV programs, and touring Europe to boot. His once-flagging recording career went right through the roof, with albums for World Pacific; Vee-Jay; Bluesville; Bobby Robinson's Fire label (where he cut his classic "Mojo Hand" in 1960); Candid; Arhoolie; Prestige; Verve; and, in 1965, the first of several LPs for Stan Lewis' Shreveport-based Jewel logo.

Hopkins generally demanded full payment before he'd deign to sit down and record, and seldom indulged a producer's desire for more than one take of any song. His singular sense of country time befuddled more than a few unseasoned musicians; from the 1960s on, his solo work is usually preferable to band-backed material.

Filmmaker Les Blank captured the Texas troubadour's informal lifestyle most vividly in his acclaimed 1967 documentary, The Blues Accordin' to Lightnin' Hopkins. As one of the last great country bluesmen, Hopkins was a fascinating figure who bridged the gap between rural and urban styles. /Biography by Bill Dahl, AllMusic

Texas bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins career was both long and fruitful. He performed live for six decades and recorded for over 30 years amassing a catalogue that was larger than almost any of his contemporaries. Not only was he prolific but he was also a great raconteur and a very good live performer with an 'act' honed to perfection at pre-war dances and parties. His guitar playing was unconventional, some have even called it ragged, but it is not as a guitarist that he will be remembered. Somehow the way he set his songs seemed totally apposite and it gave everything he did an authenticity that few others were ever able to match.

This 3 CD set, remastered from analog tapes, contains 57 tracks - 20 never before on CD and 12 previously unreleased performances.

There's a special quality to the blues that came up out of Texas. You can hear it in the raggy-time music of Henry Thomas, in the spiritually charged rituals of Blind Willie Johnson, and in the unmistakable Southwestern blues of Lightnin' Hopkins. It is said that young Sam Hopkins received firsthand instruction from Blind Lemon Jefferson. As a boy, Hopkins worked in the cotton fields until choosing to become, like Henry Thomas, a wandering musician. He also began performing with his cousin, a pianist and blues shouter from Leona, south of Centerville, who went by the name of Texas Alexander. Sam Hopkins became known as Lightnin' when in 1946 he made 14 records with pianist Thunder Smith for the Aladdin label in Hollywood. This is the fifth installment of Lightnin' Hopkins' complete recordings presented in chronological order. There are occasional departures from his standard pattern of blues for solo voice and guitar: "Needed Time" is a spiritual, and "Candy Kitchen" is a rare example of Hopkins accompanying himself on the piano. "Another Fool in Town" is stunningly honest and beautifully executed. Sensitive listeners may experience a sense of wonderment at this individual's remarkable ritual of self-expression. His one-man show was at first described by music critics as stark or even "a little bewildering," largely because of the complete absence of pretentiousness or superficiality. Most of these recordings were made in Houston, including this artist's only sides for Specialty Records. Four sides cut in New York in 1951 for the Sittin' in With record label find Hopkins assisted by an unidentified bassist. A mention in the discography of "tap dancing" seems to refer to the sound of the guitarist patting his foot while rocking his way through a spirited boogie appropriately entitled "Gotta Move." ~arwulf arwulf

If you want some early sides by the great Lightnin' Hopkins, this is a good place to come. Or, rather, it's one of the good places; you could just as easily get the Arhoolie compilations, which duplicate many of the titles on this disc. Drawn mainly from Hopkins' stay on the Gold Star label, there's no doubt it's all quality stuff, showcasing the way the man could improvise a lyric in the studio and make it seem as if it had been around forever. He'd juxtapose those with older blues, and the two would sit perfectly well side by side. But he was also an eccentric performer, one who could work a theme for a couple of verses then drift off, or change tempo at will during a guitar break, making for strange listening at times. But in that is also some charm -- it's impossible to dislike him, or even find him mean-spirited. ~Chris Nickson

The third installment in the Classics complete chronological recordings of Lightnin' Hopkins presents a series of predominately solo performances recorded in Houston during 1948 and 1949 for the Gold Star record label, a local enterprise owned and operated by one Bill Quinn. Once these sides began to circulate and were reissued on the Modern and Sittin' in With labels, Lightnin' Hopkins began to acquire modest fame from coast to coast as both "T-Model Blues" and "Tim Moore's Farm" sold well enough to make it onto the national charts as "hits." This is wonderfully honest music. It operates on a very personal level, usually proceeding at a gradual, relaxed pace. "Rollin' Woman Blues" pitches a bit of a woogie and "Mad with You" resurfaces as "Lightnin' Boogie" with tap dancing provided by Houston's own L.C. Williams. ~arwulf arwulf

Lightnin' Hopkins' ability to express himself as a seemingly perpetual one-man show is dramatically demonstrated on this second installment of his complete works in chronological order. Comfortably ensconced in Houston, TX, during February of 1948, the guitarist cut 22 sides for the Aladdin record label, tapping into a set of blues traditions that place him in league with Mississippi John Hurt, Furry Lewis, Fred McDowell, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Hopkins' cousin Texas Alexander, and even Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas, whose spirit seems to surface momentarily during the pleasantly melodious "Honey Honey Blues." This part of the survey concludes with two sides issued on the Houston-based independent Gold Star label. These were not the first Gold Star recordings for Lightnin' Hopkins, nor would they be the last. The next installment in the series (Classics 5045), which covers 1948 and part of 1949, consists entirely of Gold Star material. Listening through the early strata of Lightnin' Hopkins' enormous recorded legacy, one gets the distinct impression that each and every session is worth tapping into and absorbing in its entirety. This is real, honest blues with no frills, and the people behind the Classics label are to be championed for reissuing the entire body of work, warts and all. ~arwulf arwulf

This first installment in the complete chronological recordings of Lightnin' Hopkins opens with 14 sides he cut for the Aladdin label in Los Angeles on November 9, 1946, and August 15, 1947. Unlike most of Hopkins' austere solo recordings, the first four tracks feature pianist Thunder Smith, who sings a bit like Washboard Sam or Tampa Red. Indeed, both "Can't Do Like You Used To" and "Little Mama Boogie" could easily pass for something out of the Bluebird Chicago jump blues catalog. The other ten titles are the earliest recorded examples of the distinctive Lightnin' Hopkins style, whereby he sounds like a dry Southwestern cousin to Furry Lewis, Mississippi John Hurt, or Fred McDowell. Eventually the piano completely disappears, as the guitarist creates his own private, slow, and reflective space. The other extreme is reached in the form of smoking duets with a nameless drummer, the rocking "Big Mama Jump" (a sequel to "Little Mama Boogie"), and a brisk cover of Tampa Red's cheerfully bawdy "Let Me Play with Your Poodle." Back in Houston a few months later, Hopkins cut his first two sides for the Gold Star label, close covers of his own "Short Haired Woman" and "Big Mama Jump" (now sporting licks that would later resurface in Willie Dixon's "Mellow Down Easy" and Elmore James' "Shake Your Money Maker"). Hopkins finished off 1947 and forged ahead into the following year by recording eight more sides for Aladdin. Though credited to Hopkins in the discography, "Someday Baby," also redone here as "You Are Not Going to Worry My Life Anymore," actually came from Big Maceo Merriweather. Incredibly, "Nightmare Blues" was issued "as is" with periodic microphone feedback interrupting the vocal. Why nobody thought to record a second take remains a mystery. ~arwulf arwulf

AVID Roots continues with its Four Classic album series with a re-mastered 2CD Second Set release from Lightnin' Hopkins, complete with original artwork and liner notes. 'Sings The Blues'; 'Lightnin' Hopkins'; 'Blues In My Bottle' and 'Walkin' This Road by Myself' It is not surprising that in an extraordinary musical career that lasted over 50 years, Sam Lightnin' Hopkins became the most recorded of all the legendary bluesmen. Primarily a country blues singer and guitarist from the old tradition that included Robert Johnson, Blind Blake, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Charlie Patton, to name but a few, Lightnin' outlasted them all to become quite literally a living legend when the blues revival hit the US and UK in the 1950s and '60s. He had met Blind Lemon Jefferson at the age of 8 which became a defining moment in his life, and went on to become his accompanist for a while. Just think of that for a moment? The history and the stories the man must have carried around inside his head! Lightnin' had been trying to break into the recording business from the late 1930s but it wasn't until the mid-1940s that he was discovered singing and playing in the streets in Houston and was signed to Aladdin Records of Los Angeles. Houston was to become his home base from then on. But of course, Lightnin' had to earn money, life was very tough, especially for a black man in the USA. He became a prolific recording artist over the years and was one of the spearhead artists during the folk/ blues revival of the early 1960s. Our four fine selections include his album "Lightnin' Hopkins" which saw Lightnin' return to his roots with just a guitar and voice. Our album includes the rare, and lengthy original essay booklet written by legendary blues writer Samuel Charters and re-tells a fascinating story of his search to find Lightnin amongst his perhaps rightly suspicious associates and family before finally tracking the great man down. What followed was music playing by Lightnin' as he used to be heard, just by himself with his guitar, the results as you will hear, are stunning!

AVID Roots continues with its Four Classic Roots album series with a re-mastered 2CD release by Lightnin' Hopkins, complete with original artwork and liner notes. 'Lightnin' And The Blues'; 'Country Blues'; 'Lightnin' In New York' and 'Mojo Hand' A Blues man the like of which they write 'they don't make 'em like that anymore'. Born in Texas in 1912, Sam Lightnin' Hopkins began his musical journey into the blues at the age of 8 when he met the legendary and mysterious Blues man, Blind Lemon Jefferson at a local church social. So began a kind of informal apprenticeship when Hopkins accompanied Jefferson to many of his musical engagements soaking up as much as he could from the great man. By his teens he had hooked up with his cousin, another blues man, Texas Alexander with whom he travelled and worked until being discovered in 1946. Re-christened Lightnin' in partnership with pianist Wilson Smith, re-christened Thunder, the pair became Aladdin recording artists. The career of Lightnin' Hopkins then followed much the same path as many fellow blues men. Success of sorts in the 1940's and 1950's before then slipping into obscurity only to be re-discovered during the Blues/Folk revival in the 1960's. He would go on to become the most recorded bluesman in history and was voted in Rolling Stone magazine Top 100, as the 71st greatest guitarist of all time.

In the late 1940s and early '50s, Hopkins recorded for Houston record producer Bill Quinn, the results appearing on several labels (including Quinn's own Gold Star company). In 1951, Quinn sold unreleased Hopkins masters to Modern, which issued some of them on its RPM subsidiary. This 31-track disc has all 14 of the Hopkins sides that came out on RPM, plus a bunch of other tracks from the same batch of Modern-by-way-of-Quinn masters; most were not available on CD outside of Japan before this release, and were indeed usually hard to find anywhere. The sounds are what you'd expect from Hopkins if you've heard more widely circulated stuff from this period: Texas blues caught between the rural and electric era, done country style and performed solo, but usually played on a harshly amplified electric guitar that adds to the power. The title track especially has some of Hopkins' most effective guitar, getting into some really crunching and raunchy chords in the breaks. "Bad Luck and Trouble," "Beggin' You to Stay," "Mistreater Blues," "War News Blues," "Lonesome Dog Blues," "Everyday I Have the Blues" -- it's not always the most optimistic fare, although it's delivered with casual good cheer. Collectors should note that some of these sound different from the actual Modern singles, which added a lot of reverb echo; Ace decided whenever possible to use the original acetates, which had only the natural echo of the room in which Hopkins recorded. ~Richie Unterberger

Hopkins had been a prolific recording artist in the decade following his first sessions in 1948. His stark, functional guitar style and rich Texas drawl made his work instantly recognizable. The inheritor of a blues tradition that went back to Blind Lemon Jefferson and Texas Alexander, he was an idiosyncratic musician, at his best when playing alone. His predecessors' work was reflected in his first album session, recorded by Sam Charters in January 1959. Not having recorded commercially for several years, Lightnin' was in serious mood, resulting in a set of masterful performances that carried more weight than his later, frequently arbitrary sessions. Later CD reissues have surpassed this work, simply by having more tracks. ~AMG
