The San Antonio native, son of a German mother and a Native American father, began his career in the 1980s in the Texas blues scene, supporting artists such as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, George Thorogood, Leon Russell, and others. Today, Neal Black enjoys an excellent reputation in the scene as a guitarist, performer, and songwriter. With his band, The Healers, Neal Black is a sure thing, especially live. His last four studio albums all topped the blues radio charts in France and received top ratings in leading European music magazines.

Neal Black’s musical roots are unmistakable on this album, while he maintains his unique and distinctive sound within the blues-rock genre. “Number 3 Monkey” features a diverse mix of songs, ranging from high-energy electric guitar solos to delicate acoustic slide playing on the dobro – all crowned by the smoky voice of the blues-rocker who has been dubbed “The Master of High Voltage Texas Boogie” for good reason. Of the twelve tracks on “Number 3 Monkey,” ten were written by Neal Black, and as is typical of his albums, his 2026 release also includes two cover versions of old classics: “No Way To Get Along” by Robert Wilkins and “Devil Got My Woman” by Skip James, with which he pays tribute to the great blues masters who have musically influenced him. /Bluestown Music

Neil Black has a voice like a rusty railroad track and when it comes to hot licks he’s proved to be an ace guitarslinger whenever he wields his Gibson Flying V or picks up an acoustic resonator. On “Handful of Rain” the Healers’ instrumental skills cover the whole range of guitars, keyboard, accordion, mandolin, pedal steel, bass, drum, harmonica with some brass augmentation on a couple of tracks. Hard driving stuff, some slow gut wrenching blues and a respectful nod to older country blues styles.

Neal Black from Texas, and Larry Garner from Louisiana, are two artist well known for their ability to play traditional blues and also for stretching the boundaries of blues music in their original compositions. Even though this is their first collaboration they come together musically like two old friends. Some highlights of the album include the bluesy lead guitar exchange on 'God Today' and 'Bad People', and the sharing of vocals on songs like 'Saints of New Orleans' and 'A Friend Like You'.

Guilty Saints is not an album with a few guest tracks by the visiting artist, instead it is a real 'double artist' project. Larry & Neal worked together on the music, lyrics and production and the final result is a fusion of blues, Americana and roots, that crosses into new musical territories for both Neal Black and Larry Garner.

07. Before Daylight (4:17)
08. Goin' Down The Road (3:44)
09. American Dream (3:27)
10. Dead By Now (4:28)

Music Journalists have long considered Neal Black as one of the most original & innovative Artists on the scene today. On his new album “BEFORE DAYLIGHT” Neal Black once again defies the stereotypical expectations of being a Texas Guitar Slinger. His lyrical content leans more towards a Bluesy version of Bukowski and his unique approach to Lead Guitar still tastes of Texas but comes closer to sounding
like a Turbo-Charged Chris Rea or Peter Green.
The album’s underlying theme of “in darkness there is hope” is accentuated by Neal Black’s raw, smoky vocals that make us believe every word he sings is the Voodoo Gospel truth. With Songs like “Jesus & Johnny Walker” and “Dead By Now”, Neal Black crosses into new territory musically and lyrically.
“Before Daylight” is the 9th Album and a celebration of a 20 year relationship between Neal Black and Dixiefrog Records and features Neal’s incredible backing band “The Healers” including Mike Lattrell (Piano, Organ, Mandolin, Accordion) and Kris Jefferson (Bass & Percussion), both former Popa Chubby musicians, but also Dave Bowler (Drums & Percussion) and Bako Mikaelian (Harmonica).
NEAL BLACK, Texas Blues Rock Musician, called “the Master of High Voltage Texas Boogie” has spent the last 30 years electrifying audiences around the world with his fusion of Blues, Rock, Jazz and Country.
Born in Washington, USA (his dad was American Indian, his mother German), Neal started his career on the Texas Blues scene, opening shows for Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert King, the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Omar & the Howlers, Johnny Copeland, George Thorogood, Leon Russell, Paul Butterfield, the Nighthawks and many more. He studied music with Jazz greats like Barney Kessel, Lenny Breau, Herb Ellis and Jacky King.
Neal moved on to New York City beginning of the 1990’s performing with his own new project “The Healers” as well as working late night sessions with Joan Osborne, the Holmes Brothers and Popa Chubby. He quickly gained a great reputation as guitarist/performer/songwriter, and then decided to head to Mexico in the year 2000, where he spent almost 3 years touring in concert venues and at all the major blues festivals. It is in Mexico that he recorded “Dreams are for Losers”, later released by Dixiefrog in Europe.
He also worked as a professor of music at the Pan American University there, collaborating at the same time, in concert and at the studio, with legendary Mexican/Cuban artist José Fors and his band Forseps and other artists.
From 2004 onwards and up to now, Neal tours Europe regularly with his band “Neal Black & the Healers”, living between the South of France and the USA. He is also still working as a producer, songwriter and guitarist on projects for other artists.
In 2005, Neal Black was nominated in France/Europe for the “Trophee du Blues” as “Best Modern Electric Blues Guitarist”.
In 2007, Neal Black’s album “HANDFUL OF RAIN” was Number 1 on the French Blues Radio Charts, while receiving great reviews in the U.S.A and across Europe.
In 2011, another Neal Black production made it to Number 1 on the French Blues Radio Charts: “SOMETIMES THE TRUTH” with special guests Popa Chubby, Mason Casey, Fred Chapellier and Nico Wayne Toussaint, was recorded in France and New York City and was followed up by more than 200 concerts in 2012/2013…
NEAL BLACK has recorded 9 Albums for DIXIEFROG Records during the past 20 years, being longer than any other artist on this label.

Out of San Antonio, Texas, gruff voiced singer and muscular guitarist Neal spends much of his time in Europe these days – and America’s loss is our gain. He is Dixiefrog’s longest-serving artist, and another of the labels’ stalwarts, Popa Chubby, helps out here in places with guitar, vocal and engineering duties. This CD contains plenty of just the kind of hard-edged, wailing, boogying blues-rock you would expect, though occasionally tempered with an Americana approach – try the relatively tender and slyly (pointedly) humorous ‘Holiday Inn In Heaven’ with its prominent dobro playing. ‘Mississippi Doctor’ has a voodoo theme, and several others, such as the opening ‘New York City Blues’ and the appropriately Tex-Mex flavored ‘Gringo Bring Me Your Guns’, concentrate on the less salubrious side of life.. The thoughtful, moody title track, with its striking a cappella opening from Neal , make this a fine release all round. ~Norman Darwen (BLUES MATTERS)
