At this point in his career, harmonica legend Billy Boy Arnold could just coast on his Chicago blues laurels, rehashing his old tunes and tricks whenever he decides to cut a new album. But fortunately, Arnold doesn't buy into shortcuts, and neither does his producer for this session, Duke Robillard. On Boogie 'n' Shuffle, Arnold really lets it rip -- not only in the John Lee Williamson tradition he's well-known for, but also in the R&B traditions of Ray Charles and Jimmy McCracklin. Robillard's band is certainly up to the task, seamlessly switching from flashy soul grooves ("Home in Your Heart") to lazy Jimmy Reed-styled boogies ("Come Here Baby") to Delta blues barrelhouse ("Greenville"). As for Arnold, he's still yet to prove himself a singer of much power or range (he gets a bit overwhelmed by the busy arrangements on "Just Your Fool" and "Greenback"), but he makes up for it with classy phrasing that can turn a run-of-the-mill 12-bar shuffle into a masterpiece -- the swinging "Let's Work It Out" being the best example here.

While Arnold does show off some nice harmonica riffs, this isn't exactly a blues harp extravaganza; three of the tunes are harpless, and the emphasis is clearly on Arnold's singing and songwriting. The bonus track interview offers a colorful, anecdotal history of the Chicago blues scene according to Arnold, with glimpses of John Lee Williamson, Willie Dixon, and the hallowed '50s Chess sessions that produced the Bo Diddley beat. ~Ken Chang

Willie King - 2 albums: Jukin' At Bettie's / I Am The Blues

Willie King was born in Prairie Point, MS, in 1943. After his father left, Willie and his siblings was raised by his grandparents, local sharecroppers. Music was important to the King family - Willie's grandfather was a gospel singer, and his absent father was an amateur blues musician. Young Willie made a diddley bo by nailing a baling wire to a tree in the yard. By age 9 he had a one-string guitar that he could bring indoors to play at night.

In 1967, Willie King moved to Chicago in an attempt to make more money than he could down South. After a year spent on the West and South Side, he returned to Old Memphis, Alabama, just across the border from the Mississippi Prairie. A salesman - of shoes, cologne, and other frivolities - Willie traveled the rural roads hawking goods and talking politics. Choosing not to work under the "old system" of unequal treatment, King joined the civil rights movement near the end of the decade, eventually associating with the left-wing Highlander Center.

By the late 1970s, King was writing what he calls "struggling songs" - political blues tunes that he used to educate his audiences. As King explains "through the music I could reach more people, get 'em to listen." Yet as his rollicking blues style attests, King still knows how to have a good time. He played the juke circuit and bootlegged whiskey on the side, resorting to popular blues covers when the "struggling songs" upset a close-minded audience.

Guitar Mac and His Blues Express When you think of the blues, you think B.B. King, Muddy Waters……and of course, that guitar that speaks to you….That’s what it does. It’s that signature sound that identifies this style of music instantaneously. The guitar tells the story, as a second voice. This is the blues. This style of music is very deep, very emotional, full of dynamics and intensity. Guitar Mac and His Blues Express is a member of this elite group. He is from Cotton Plant, Arkansas, but his music is pure Mississippi Delta Blues. He was introduced to playing the blues guitar at a very young age, learning the Delta style which is still alive and kicking in that region. He moved to the South Bay area in 1968 and settled in Sacramento, California. He has relentlessly pursued opportunities to perform and demonstrate this style of music to the masses. This drive takes him all over the world. He’s performed in Europe – all over France, Italy, England, Germany and Holland. In California he’s been playing his music since 1983 at the Sacramento Blues Festival.

In my Year End Review 2012, for Best Blues Album, I did not pick Steve Strongman's critically acclaimed release "A Natural Fact", instead I chose Paul Reddick's "Wishbone", whom I also chose as #1 on my Top 10 Canadian Blues Albums 2012 list, with Steve Strongman placing #2. That being said I must say that pretty well everyone else chose "A Natural Fact" as their best Canadian Blues release, including the 2013 Maple Blues Awards for Recording/Producer of the Year and Blues Album Of The Year at the 2013 Juno's. Steve Strongman also picked up Guitarist of The Year and Socan Songwriter of the Year Awards at the 2013 BMA's, along with 3 additional nominations.

"A Natural Fact" was an Acoustic outing for Steve Strongman, but this time around, with "Let Me Prove It To You", Strongman comes at us, full force, with a knock out set of High Energy Electric Blues featuring 11 Tracks, all originals and all written or co-written by Steve Strongman with Rob Szabo stepping in as co-writer on 8 of the Tracks. In addition to co-writing, Rob Szabo also took the helm as Producer for "Let Me Prove It To You".

"Let Me Prove It To You" only clocked in at 37 minutes but I must say that this rip roaring affair really felt a lot longer than that, thanks to the stellar class of performers, which included Steve Strongman on Vocals, Guitars, Harmonica, and Bass on Track 4, and on various other Tracks, Dave King (Drums), Adam Warner (Drums), Alec Fraser (Bass), Martin Mcintyre (Bass), Jesse O'Brien (Piano), Marc Rogers (Bass), Emma-Lee (Backing Vocals), and Catherine Wallace (Group Vocals). Special Guest on "Let Me Prove It To You" was none other than Legendary Quebec Blues Harp Slinger Guy Belanger, whom brings his magic to the mix on Track 7 "Lookin' For Trouble".

Some have called the title Steve Strongman chose for the album, "Let Me Prove It To You", a little ironic, for indeed he simply has nothing to prove, yet on each and everyone of these brilliantly performed Tracks, that is what he has continued to do, leaving nothing behind but an absolutely infectious set of gun slinging Blues, done in a style that only Steve Strongman seems capable of bringing to the table. And bringing it to the table is what he does throughout showing us his immense skills as not only a Vocalist and Guitar Slinger, but also an extremely accomplished writer, whom along with Rob Szabo have given us 11 little gems with enough great hooks to fill a suitcase, which started to be displayed in all it's glory, 30 seconds into the first song.

Jimmy King - 2 albums: Live At B.B. King's L.A. / Live At Monterey

Memphis-based left-handed guitar player Little Jimmy King was one of the most exciting blues players to emerge on the scene in the '90s. King was born December 4, 1968, as Manuel Gales but renamed himself for his two favorite guitar heroes, Jimi Hendrix and Albert King. He got started as a rock & roller, but by the mid-'80s had switched to blues. By 1988, he had left the Memphis blues scene to go on the road with his hero as part of Albert King's band. The late Albert King called Little Jimmy his grandson, and the late Stevie Ray Vaughan also had high praise for the young guitarist. In a moment King will never forget, Vaughan told him: "Play on, brother, you've got it. Don't stop playing for nobody."

King's self-titled debut was released in 1991 on the Rounder Bullseye Blues label, and he followed it up in 1994 with Something Inside of Me, on which he's accompanied by former Double Trouble bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris "Whipper" Layton. King can also be heard playing guitar on Ann Peebles' Full Time Love and Otis Clay's I'll Treat You Right and On My Way Home. King's 1995 record with his two guitar playing brothers, Eric Gales and Eugene Gales, Left Hand Brand was released by the House of Blues label in 1995. While the brothers often played gigs together, Left Hand Brand is the only album they made. In 1997 King released his third record for Bullseye Blues, the Willie Mitchell produced Soldier for the Blues.

Little Jimmy King died suddenly on July 19, 2002 after suffering a heart attack at the young age of 34. King's live shows, as documented on 2002's Live at Monterey, like his three highly praised studio recordings for Bullseye Blues, were full of fire and fury, passionate guitar playing within the context of his band, the Memphis Soul Survivors, great vocals, and clever songs. His presence and playing are sure to be missed. ~bio by Richard Skelly

South Bound Freight Train is the first CD for the Biscuit Rollers. The band started in 2005 in hope of finding the right combination of musicians that really cared about preserving the old time blues feeling of people like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Cephas and Wiggins. The band is headed by vocalist and percussionist Kelly Miller who brings that deep Mississippi blues voice that we love to hear in those old records of yesterday. Scotty Grey is the spark of the band and plays a variety of musical instruments including guitar and foot drums but is a master at old piedmont blues harp with a bit of Sonny Terry and Sugar Blue mixed in. Jack Roy is the guitarist of the band, while throwing in some harp and banjo just to keep things lively.

We hope you like the CD as much as we enjoyed making it. These songs were our favorites to perform over the last 3 years and wanted to share them with our fans and friends.

Guilty! (called Black & White Blues in re-releases) is a 1971 album by Eric Burdon and Jimmy Witherspoon. It was the first release by Burdon after he left his band War.

In September 1970, Jimi Hendrix died after a jam session with Eric Burdon & War at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. After that, Burdon often broke down on stage. On 5 February 1971 he finally left the band in the middle of their European tour, allegedly due to exhaustion. After returning home and taking time off, the bulk of the album was recorded in summer with Witherspoon. The backing band, called Tovarish, consisted mainly of members from War.

"Going Down Slow" was recorded live in May 1971 in the San Quentin State Prison, with backing from Ike White and the San Quentin Prison Band. "Home Dream" was taken from Eric Burdon & War's back catalog; the song's title refers to the John Phillips Studios in Los Angeles. "Soledad" was released as a single.

The album was re-released as Black & White Blues in 1976. Remastered CD issues, also with the alternate album title, were made in 1995 by MCA and in 2003 by BMG.

Longtime friends, they began this new chapter by playing local venues and concerts discovering the joy of sharing their music on a whole different level.

David's propulsive guitar, welded with Phil's harmonica chops, provide a steady groove reminiscent of the 60’s Chicago style duets. The two on occasion will also employ a twin harp attack. Both David and Phil bring decades of vocal experience, with David concentrating on his original compositions and Phil interpreting Blues and roots.

David and Phil are committed to Blues education and teaching Blues to local kids as well as keeping the Blues alive in the traditions of the great Delta masters.

Ford fits snugly into what has become the Fat Possum house sound: repetitive, raw electric guitar riffs, going off on one or two-chord vamps with stream-of-consciousness, improvised-sounding lyrics. The effect can be hypnotic or tedious, depending upon your taste. It's got more of a boogie, down-home feel that the usual Fat Possum release though, with Frank Frost adding keyboards to the usual guitar-drum duo combination on a couple of cuts. ~Richie Unterberger

An album was born one night at Ronnie Scott's in London. Lucky was on stage and launched into a stunning performance of an old Gatemouth Brown song. Label boss John Stedman's reaction was instant. What about a 'Retro' style album from Lucky? Lucky enthusiastically agreed. But Lucky, Steve Washington and their collaborators are supremely talented and creative - the concept's merely a starting point. So is this 'Retro'? Well, there's an acoustic bass, real piano, stunning 'real blues' guitar and great songs played live in the studio. A multi-instrumentalist, Lucky did just the occasional overdub. A bonus is the contribution of Lucky's wife Tamara. Her vocals on What Have I Done Wrong, are fabulously funky. Listen out also for Lucky's piano on Get On Down - another number where a funk groove dominates. The Peterson team couldn't become 'copyists' to save their lives - they bring a rare but much-needed freshness to this music. Lucky's on the cusp of regaining his mantle as today's hottest young blues artist.

As a triple threat, guitarist/organist/singer Lucky Peterson is able to vary the usual repetitive patterns that a full-length album of blues music can fall into, and though the back cover of his self-titled 1999 album advises "File Under: BLUES, " advice we would not dispute, a lot of different bases are covered on the album. "Shake," with the addition of the Late Night Horns, is a convincing remake of the Sam Cooke soul classic, Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" provides a country-style platform for a duet between Peterson and Joe Louis Walker, and the most surprising selection, Bobbie Gentry's "Ode To Billie Joe," turns out to be the outline for an extended instrumental organ solo. In between the stylistic changes of pace, however, there is still plenty of room for the updated Chicago blues in which Peterson specializes, notably on Ernie Isley's "Deal With It," Earl King's "Seduction," and Peterson's own self-descriptive "Tribute To Luther Allison." ~William Ruhlmann

Hungry John - 3 albums: So Fine / Bad Men Risin' / Have You Heard

John Magnar Bernes, better known as "Hungry John" has dedicated his life to the blues. Since the mid-sixties, John has travelled and performed in Norway and abroad, spreading the blues. He is one of the pillars on the Norwegian music scene, and a respected veteran with a lifelong passion for the blues. Bernes was given his nickname "Hungry John" during his days as a starving street-musician in London in the early seventies. Inspired by all the music he experienced, he returned to Norway in 1975 where he formed "Bergen Blues Band". This band was instrumental in giving the blues a break-through in Norway. Bergen Blues Band released three albums on the EMI label, comprised mostly of his own originals.

In 1983, John headed to the United States to expand his horizon in the blues world. After playing and studying the blues throughout the US in 1983/84 with various acts, Bernes felt the need for renewal and formed his next Norway based blues band, "Hungry John and The Blue Shadows", inspired by the more rock-related Texas style of blues. Hungry John and The Blue Shadows released three albums during their ten years reign and their first release, Nice Guys, also was released in United States. Hungry John and The Blue Shadows never completely disbanded, but after a few personell changes, Bernes choose to drop the band name and continued under the name, "Hungry John".

In his fourth decade as an active musician and song writer, Bernes continues to expand his musical horizons and capture new listeners. All over Scandinavia he`s a safe bet at festivals. In 2003 he won The Blues Price at Notodden Blues Festival, for a lifelong dedication for the blues. His solid performances are also appreciated by American blues veterans. This man is real. He is the blues. Listen to his music and you will be hooked.

John Magnar Bernes – vocals/harmonica; Atle Johannessen – guitar; Aksel Fjæra- bass/vocals; Gunnar Bergstrøm – drums.

The sounds of New Orleans have always been in Maria Muldaur's blood and catalog. Dr. John appeared on her first solo album back in 1974 and she arguably hit a career high point on her first full-fledged love letter to the city, 1992's Louisiana Love Call. She returns to the Crescent City for this 2011 release, employing veteran New Orleans keyboardist Dave Torkanowsky as musical director and "facilitator" and returning to the swampy "Bluesiana music" sound that includes heavy doses of gospel and blues along with touches of jazz, soul, and funk. This is a major shift from her past two acoustic jug band releases and plays to her sultry strengths as a vocalist who can convincingly sing any style of music she feels passionate about. Muldaur revisits a few tracks she has previously recorded (an earlier version of "As an Eagle Stirreth in Her Nest" was included on 1976's Sweet Harmony) but with a band that features guitarist Shane Theriot and Subdudes bassist Johnny Allen, they and the rest of the handpicked material boil with fresh enthusiasm. The hourlong, 13-track disc finds the singer interpreting some signature songs from the history of New Orleans and other gems such as Sugar Pie DeSanto's frisky Chess nugget "Soulful Dress" and a slow, stunning version of Percy Mayfield's "Send Me Someone to Love," the latter being the only song here not cut in New Orleans. Muldaur's voice has grown huskier over the years, all the better to dig into the gospel tunes that ground this set. Female backing singers including her daughter Jenni on harmonies help bring the religion on "I Done Made It Up in My Mind." The closing "I Am Not Alone" features its writer, Rick Vito, on slide guitar and strips down the sound, allowing Muldaur to hum and croon her spiritual convictions atop a snakelike churchy groove. She's just as convincing on a jumpy cover of Elvin Bishop's "I'll Be Glad" and the funk of Bobby Charles' classic "Why Are People Like That?," leaving room for the musicians to do their thing without hogging the spotlight. It's that indescribable vibe, perhaps aided by recording in New Orleans, that provides this album with its continuity and consistency. Add a batch of terrific tunes from somewhat unexpected sources (Austin's Stephen Bruton and two from Greg Brown) and a sympathetic mix from another area veteran in John Porter, and the result is a late-career stunner for an Americana singer who has never disappointed her fans despite, or perhaps because of, her diverse musical palette. That eclecticism works best within a context, though, which makes this return to New Orleans another high-water mark in Muldaur's impressive career. ~Hal Horowitz

Arnold McCuller grew up in Cleveland and, not surprisingly, his early musical background was singing in church, where both his parents were active vocalists. His first major gig was in the national touring company of the musical Hair, and then became part of a soul-styled quartet called Revelation who toured with the BeeGees. In addition to his work as a backing vocalist, he has been appearing in films since 1979, starting with The Warriors, and more recently in The Sum of All Fears, where his voice became the singing voice for a character.

Despite his role primarily as a supporting musician, Soon As I Get Paid is in fact McCuller's eighth album, or ninth if one counts the soundtrack to Hairspray in 2007 on which he was featured. His first release was in 1984 with keyboard man David Benoit.

With McCuller hanging out with world-class musicians for as long has he has, his new CD is, not unexpectedly, a class act. His surprisingly light, but buttery tenor is soulful but understated. His CD is one that achieves its impact through its subtlety and depth. Recorded over just five days in January and February of 2011, the material includes an interesting mix of originals, plus songs from composers ranging from bluesman J.B. Lenoir, to John Hiatt, to contemporary country writers Buddy and Julie Miller. He is joined by some excellent players, including jazz keyboard man Larry Goldings, David Hidalgo of Los Lobos on guitar, along with Mike Landau and David Kalish; Jess Young on additional keyboards, Jimmy Johnson on bass and Gary Novak on drums, most of them first-call studio musicians. McCuller co-produced this fan-funded CD with guitarist Kalish.

Bowling said the awards and positive press the band has earned must mean he and his bandmates possess strength in their skill set. Bowling's colleagues include bassist Vegas and drummer Slammin' Dan. Adding to the mystique of the group, both prefer to be mentioned without their last names. In the case of Bowling, he didn't begin playing strictly blues music. He grew up playing rock but he said that with age, he turned to influences such as Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bowling soon found himself playing the blues.

3 Dayz Whizkey - 2 albums: Black Water / The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea

Just one year after releasing their debut record “The devil and the deep blue sea” 3 Dayz Whizkey return in 2013 with their second album. After one year of constantly touring with new bandmates Myles Tyler (Vocals) and Brad the Snake (Rhythm Guitar) they really teamed up to a powerhouse 5 piece Bluesrock unit. Again all songs (except “now that you ́re gone) are written by Tilo George Copperfield who really enjoys telling Rock and Roll stories without keeping the Blues out of sight. The songs were mainly recorded live in the studio

The album is produced by Big Tony who aimed for an authentic straightf orward classic rock sound that will remind you of the early 70 ́s, classic rock ́s “classic age”. New singer Myles Tyler shows his voice ́s broad range on Black Water and the band always puts the song first. There is no hourly soloing on this record. 3 Dayz Whizkey puts a smile on your face with that old time blues driven Classic Rock straight in your face and with that steady pumping rhythm machine Little Chris on drums making you shake your ass. Black Water provides some explosive live tracks that already have become standards in the 3 Dayz live set. “The Gambler”, “Make my day, “Mick Jagger” and “Blues is King” always put fire on stage. The slow track “Bad luck women” is a highlight in a 3 Dayz Whizkey show and turned out to be one of the audiences favorites. Enjoy the music and turn it up LOUD

The following is not about this album and we're not even sure if this is the correct artist described here. It's the only info we could find about Marsha Raven.

DO YOU fancy a crash course in the blues? Marsha Raven gives one in Blues Angels (The Dream Tent on the Meadows, August 17 to September 5). When this lady sings the blues you feel it all the way back to your grandparents. The show is a musical journey spanning 90 years, highlighting women's role in the history of blues, which covers a musical spectrum from spirituals to rap.

The first ladies of blues and soul are all drawn upon, with songs made famous by such as Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, The Supremes, Tina Turner, Gloria Gaynor, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, Sade and Tracey Chapman, all women who broke with various traditions and changed the face of jazz, blues, gospel, soul and even disco, the music that ate the world.

Marsha Raven is a serious wailer and she tells it like she means it. She gives life to each of the performers with jokes and juicy bits from their various raffish lifestyles -- as well as singing their songs with love. She hails from Detroit and is the third generation of a musical family, with an uncle who played with Duke Ellington and a cousin who was with Jeff Beck.

She sang in Richie Havens's show Electric God in New York City and has paid her dues around Britain with groups like The Blues Band, Shakatak and Bronski Beat, among others. She's also had solo hits on the Euro-Beat charts.

With the current trend for "sacred steel," it's interesting to hear steel guitar from the "other side of the tracks." Hop Wilson apparently didn't like touring, and spent most of his musical career playing in Houston, Texas. The recordings featured here are pretty much his entire output. But what an output it is. Hop's lap steel guitar playing is by turns wildly demented and plangently sweet, sometimes within the same phrase. The lap steel adds a different tonal color to the proceedings, and Wilson has a terrific singing voice, perfect for blues, with a mournful edge even on the faster numbers. Drummer Ivory Lee Semien and an unknown vocalist take the mike on two other numbers, but I prefer Wilson's own singing, though they do a fine job.

The "recorded in a bar at midnight" ambience, combined with the occasional amp crackle and buzz, gives you that feeling of presence lost on many modern sanitized blues recordings. The band is loose but tight, and you get the feeling they are into what they're playing and know the material well.

Professional blues critics have compared Hop Wilson to Elmore James, but I frankly don't hear it except on "Be Careful With The Blues," where Wilson lifts the "Dust My Broom" riff and makes it his own in an instrumental. Wilson is less frenetic than James, and throws a lot more variety into his music. As much as I love Elmore James, a lot of his material relied on that "Dust My Broom" riff and stayed in the same key. Wilson has no such limitations. Overall this is a great, downhome, funky recording of a little-known and underappreciated bluesman. I would recommend it highly to anyone who appreciates the real live blues. ~happydogpotatohead/amazon

'Brand Spank'n Blue' capitalizes on Jeremiah’s fantastic skills on the fret board and the powerful polish of the Sliders horns. When these guys got together, genuine music magic happened! Sit in on one set, and you’ll have a new favorite group to follow.

Walk into a gin joint in St. Louis and you'll likely hear the familiar "blues" sound that made the area famous. It's lyrics about the struggles of daily living with the hallmark blues style guitar that rips at your soul and soothes the spirit. Johnson takes that rich heritage but also blends influences that shaped his rugged youth like Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix, BB King, Albert Collins, Albert King, Johnny Winter, Alvin Lee from Ten Years After, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, and Hank Williams Sr. and Jr., to name just a few. On top of a rich gumbo of solid songwriting, Johnson kicks it up a notch with The Sliders, Jim Rosse (trumpet) and Stuart Williams (sax).

Jeremiah Johnson - Lead Guitar and Vocals; Jeff Girardier - Bass; Brad Martin - Drums; Stuart Williams - sax; Jim Rosse - trumpet.

There is optimism within the title of Ruthie Foster's Promise of a Brand New Day, an optimism that's reflected in the music itself. Some of this brightness may be due to Foster's decision to have Meshell Ndegeocello produce this 2014 album, giving the neo-soul singer free rein to hire musicians and choose final takes, but Ndegeocello is hardly imposing her own attitude on Foster. Instead, she focuses on the soulful, kind vibe emanating from Foster, a feeling that infuses the message tunes and songs of love that comprise Promise. Often, the record veers ever so slightly to soul over gospel or blues -- something that's perhaps inevitable when William Bell collaborates on "It Might Not Be Right," a song that harks back to the classic Memphis sound. A few other songs on Promise of a Brand New Day touch upon that groove, including the opening "Singing the Blues," while other cuts get a little bit harder and grittier ("Let Me Know," "Believe"), and Foster also has a bit of fun twisting old Dylan lyrics on "Outlaw." That playfulness is subtle, as are the stylistic hybrids, and that might be the best thing about this thoroughly winning record: Foster is wearing her open heart on her sleeve but she's never pushing too hard, never overselling her message; she's charming with her warmth and sly skill. ~Stephen Thomas Erlewine

A blues record dripping with soulful guitar licks, smooth vocals, and sweet horns, Restless Mind is the latest release from soul-blues guitarist/singer/songwriter Murali Coryell. This is Coryell’s first studio record since his 2009 release, Shake it, Sugar, and it is safe to say that this was a product worth waiting for.

While the record starts off a little bit slow – the first three tracks are not Coryell’s greatest work – the quality of music picks up significantly with “I’m So Happy,” and lasts right up until the last shout on a fantastic cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.”

Coryell’s best guitar solo comes on “I’m So Happy,” where his gruff, slightly distorted tone is balanced out by sweet, heartfelt playing. “I Can’t Give You Up” is a classic, soulful blues tune punctuated by tight horn arrangements, anchored by alto sax man Joe Morales, whose tone is eerily reminiscent of Cannonball Adderly, but whose playing uniquely his own; Morales has a nice solo on “Tag Along.” “Lonely Eyes” is a nice country-inspired pop tune that is sure to get some Coryell some air time.

Coryell is very good at what he does: contemporary soul-blues. The record is not particularly eclectic, but it is quite good; Coryell has a great voice and his guitar playing is strong. Most importantly, Coryell’s guitar voice complements his vocal work; his guitar shows a slightly gruffer side of an otherwise sweet, soulful musical personality. The record isn’t earthshattering, but it is an enjoyable listen and features an artist who has found his sound and is sticking to it. ~Nik Rodewald

Roaring out of the southern Indiana foothills comes Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band playing a brand of Americana and Blues that stands alone – Delta blues and hillbilly fervor combine with musical acuity sharp as razor wire – best know, this trio is a force to be reckoned with. The growl of a good truck engine, the fiercest passion for his country home and family and an uncanny ability to breathe new life into old forms of music give them a pedigree many Americana acts would kill for and an ironclad work ethic keeps them on the road 250 dates a year, playing for the people with hurricane force. Locked in with an audience, the band create their own community and welcome the crowd into it, transporting them away from their troubles to joyous release, the way great musicians have done for centuries. The Rev. J. Peyton, his wife Breezy and Ben “Bird Dog” Bussell are a living breathing embodiment of the traditions and hard work ethic native to their Brown County, Indiana home. Their new album Between The Ditches is a chronicle of this lifestyle.

With a reputation for their incendiary live shows well established, The Big Damn Band set out to make the album that would finally capture the same heat. Recorded at White Arc Studio in Bloomington, Indiana, the album was produced by The Rev. Peyton and Paul Mahern (John Mellencamp, Iggy Pop), and mastered by Brian Lucey (Black Keys, Dr. John, Shins). For previous albums, the band had recorded live, straight through in the same mode as a live show. Between the Ditches came together more slowly, with care. “We approached it saying we were going to make a record this time, not just a recording,” explained the Rev. He used a different guitar set up on almost every track, employing two ’30s National guitars, a cigar box guitar, a custom shop Gibson flattop 1929 L2 and an Airline map electric guitar. The primary amps are custom Weber amps made by Weber speakers – both are one of a kind.

Their fifth album, Between The Ditches features a new level of craftmanship in both recording technique and songwriting. The Rev. feels that it’s their best album to date.”I’m very proud of this album, the songwriting and the playing.” The guitar playing alone should put the Rev. in the same class with his much revered idols. The songwriting boasts an added maturity and runs the gamut in subject matter from the barn burning, tongue in cheek, “Shut the Screen”, (where “It’s too dang hot and the bugs are too dang mean”) to the evils of strip mining, an issue close to the hearts of this Indiana born and bred band in, “Don’t Grind It Down”. There seems to be a theme expressed throughout the album and stated clearly in their first single,“Devils Look Like Angels”: “Devil don’t live down in hell, the devil’s right here doing very well”.
