A sparkling live recording of a Tokyo concert by Lindley, the wizard of anything with strings on it this side of a tennis racquet, and Naser, his Jordanian-American percussionist collaborator and neighbor.

It’s no great surprise that Lindley decided to release this himself rather than go hat in hand to any of the major labels, asking them to put out 11 songs and 70 minutes of music played on the Turkish saz , electric oud or Hawaiian slide guitars, accompanied only by an armload of Middle Eastern hand drums. But the music Lindley and Naser make is wondrous, melding elements of Middle-Eastern, African, Chinese, Indian, Celtic and Central European traditional music with American rock, folk, jazz, blues and R & B, all laced with Lindley’s loopy sense of humor.

Take his 11-minute treatment of Frizz Fuller and Richard Clark’s “Rag Bag.” It opens with a long, down-tempo Hawaiian guitar solo in which Lindley conjures images of some ancient Arabian town. After several minutes, Lindley dovetails into a brief, haunting melodic passage with roots in Stephen Foster, then shifts into high gear with a stinging slide blues over which he sings the lyrics: “The curb at my side, it is like home to me/Lying in the gutter, that’s the life for me . . . I don’t want to wash, I don’t want to shave, I don’t want to work like a (expletive) slave.”

It’s an unapologetic look at the down-and-out that says when you’re hungry and homeless, it’s no different if you’re in Baghdad or Buena Park. At the same time, it says there are worse things in life than not having a job or a roof over your head.

In other songs by Lindley, Clifton Chenier, Professor Longhair and Danny O’Keefe, Lindley celebrates those who have lost love, work, world wars and, above all, he toasts those who, like himself, long ago abandoned the silly notion of taking life seriously. ~Randy Lewis

Live album recorded in The Vienna Opera House 1995-07-06.

In 1995, when Ry Cooder & David Lindley went out on a short tour across Europe, Cooder s last solo-album had been 1987 s Get Rhythm. He had, however been spending time working alongside a number of fellow musicians during this period, such as Malain guitarist, Ali Farka Touré, Hindi slide and classical guitarist, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt and, most successfully, with John Hiatt, Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner, as a member of Little Village. David Lindley, as was his want, had also been collaborating with others, most recently with Warren Zevon, on Zevon s ninth record Mutineer. But in the early summer of 95, both these master musicians decided to keep it in the family , and indeed set out for a jaunt with Cooder s son, drummer, percussionist and keyboard player Joaquim in tow, and with Lindley s daughter, vocalist Roseanne, on what came to be known as The Family Tour. The entourage performed in the UK, the Netherlands, France, Italy et al, and on 6th July they played in Vienna at the prestigious State Opera House, for a concert that was recorded and broadcast both locally and back home in the US. Playing a superb and eclectic set, with all members of the line-up taking turns to front this delightful combo, the full recording is now available on this double CD set.

By the time David Lindley made his move to a solo career, he was already a legend. Having toured and recorded with such names as Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, and Crosby & Nash, his reputation as a multi-instrumentalist (on almost any stringed instrument) was awesome. Lindley scored a contract with Elektra Records and put together an excellent band that was able to keep up with his eclectic vision. Combining blues, rock & roll, Cajun, Zydeco, Middle Eastern music, and other elements, his debut album is an absolute joy. Lindley's version of "Mercury Blues" became an FM radio staple, and his slide guitar performances on this track alone are easily some of the finest of the decade. There are some wonderfully skewed originals on the record as well, making El Rayo-X one of the greatest rock music albums of its time. Fabulous. ~Matthew Greenwald
