Helge Tallqvist, a seasoned harmonica player from Finland, admired the harmonica playing of George Smith since before Smith came to play in Finland in the winter of 1982. By the summer of 1982, Helge traveled to California and continued his friendship with Smith, and was even more inspired by Smith's chromatic harmonica playing. Smith remained such a strong influence on Helge's playing that he decided to make a tribute album to Smith.

So twenty plus years after meeting Smith, Helge teamed up with another Finnish band, Groovy Eyes, and they began to practice for this CD. He also teamed up with Sidekick Johnny, a guitar player he had played with for over 10 years. This made an early-bird team for the two of them. His good friend, Pepe Ahiqvist, shares the harmonica playing with him in two numbers, as well as some vocals. Jussi Jo Raulamo also sings some vocals. So after the two warm-up numbers, Helge plays his interpretation of George Smith. He is a talented amplified harp player and blows his chromatic harp with feeling and power.

Out of the fourteen tracks, Helge plays six songs that George Smith wrote or co-wrote. A few songs are instrumentals where Helge's harp is a vital force. People like Doug MacLeod who knew Smith personally and musically felt that Smith would be proud of this CD. The packaging is most unusual with a tin box. Helge's portrait can be seen in black and grey dots by turning the box sideways. There is also a 24-page booklet full of pictures, letters and stories from the meetings with George. /Maria Bainer

Note: Track 13 was recorded at George Smith's home in Los Angeles 05.08.1982

Gyan Dookie & Telecaster Combo - 20 Years After

13. Telecaster Shuffle (1:58)
14. I Got To Go (2:51)

Although the group's well groomed outward appearance with brim hats and limelight sparkling silk neckties, in its way, reflected the time's narcissistic atmosphere, first and foremost all the band members were skilled musicians deeply acquainted with the blues style they had chosen. The goal of Gyan Dookie & Telecaster Combo was to catch the magical 1950's sound of Chicago's most significant record company Chess. Naturally the label's most glorious blues artists, Muddy Waters and Little Walter, the king of blues harmonica players, became their leading role models.

For being one of the most popular blues groups of its time, Telecaster Combo's active period limited surprisingly to only a couple of years. They didn't do too much recordings either. Besides a 4-track EP, Telecaster Combo appeared only on Blue North label's compilation album "Living Finnish Blues". In the fall of 2007, the band assembled once again to perform after a hiatus of twenty years. To honour this comeback, Finnish Blues Society now reissues all their historical recordings, finally on CD, even added with newly recorded material. These songs are more than tailor-made to prove that Telecaster Combo's still got that old magic of Chicago blues. /Honey Aaltonen, Finnish Blues Society

Helge Tallqvist & Deep Blue Divers - Something Blue

Bitrate: MP3@320K/s

Year: 2002
Art: Full

[4:07] 1. Don't You Ever

[3:58] 8. Copy Cat
[3:54] 9. Do The Right Thing
[2:28] 10. Someother Day, Someother Time
[5:19] 11. Blueso Nova

Helge Tallqvist and The Deep Blue Divers are based in Finland, and have influenced the Finnish blues scene since 1992. Helge blows a strong, sensual chromatic harmonica, while his five-piece band plays some dramatic music on their instruments. With the exception of four tunes, some of the band members wrote the seven other tunes. Helge co-wrote three of the tunes with the guitarist, Jonni Seppala, and vocalist, Jani Penttinen. Jonni and Jani wrote two of the other tunes, and Jonni wrote the two instrumentals. These originals add a pleasant, fresh dimension to the CD.

The tunes and arrangements on this CD have depth, soul, and class, and an appeal to music lovers and dancers. The band was influenced by the West Coast Blues, and has developed their own unique sound of music, with an early sixties R&B sound and a spicy, Latin flavour, but still contemporary. The group creates a variety of moods, from soft and mellow songs to upbeat, danceable numbers. Surprisingly, the most gentle and lilting tune is their cover version of "Monkey On a Limb." Best to sit back and image yourself in Hawaii on this one. "Carne Tremula" is a soothing and mellow instrumental, and a great chance to enjoy all the talented musicians. The other instrumental, " Blueso Nova," shows off the musicians with their catchy, Latin flavour. Sami Nieminen plays some fine Hammond Organ solos on this one. Songs like " Don't You Ever," the cover version of "Had You Told Me Like It Was," and "Into The Blue," could have you dancing to the exciting rhythms.

Helge reflects the influence of the sixties sounds and styles of " George "Harmonica" Smith and Rod Piazza with his harp playing. He is a highly talented harpist and blows a tantalising, mesmerising, and powerful harp in his many solos and accompaniments throughout the album. Jani has a nasal tone to his vocals and sings the lyrics with clarity and strength. Both guitarist, Jonni, and keyboardist, Sami Nieminen, add fine dimensions to the album. Petri Pohjanoksa, bassist, and Juha Litmanen, drummer, solidify the album with their rhythm playing.

This CD album is highly entertaining, and well worth listening to. The cover photo emphasises a possible motto of Helge Tallqvist and the Deep Blue Divers, which is: "something old, something borrowed, something new, and something blue." The varied creative original and cover songs reflect some of all these elements. The CD is in the appealing cardboard digipack which is preferred over the jewel box. Hopefully, this second CD of the group will give them the broader recognition that they deserve. For further information on this album, check out Helge's website: www.kolumbus.fi/rootman.music
