New Orleans-based singer/songwriter and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Eric Lindell melds West Coast rock, swampy Gulf Coast R&B, hard country, and Memphis soul in a hybrid American roots music that, while thoroughly respectful of traditions, blazes a trail of its own.

Born in San Mateo, California, Lindell spent much of his youth in nearby Santa Rosa and Forestville. Although he worked as a baker by day, Lindell turned his focus to music in the evenings, honing his chops as a competent vocalist and guitarist by playing in bars around Sonoma County. He produced his debut album, Bring It Back, in 1996, and in 1999 he won the John Lennon Songwriting Competition with his original piece "Kelly Ann." That same year, Lindell relocated to New Orleans to pursue music as a career. The move was beneficial; Lindell soon hooked up with Galactic's Stanton Moore and began playing shows around town, frequently enlisting drummers Johnny Vidocovich and Harold Brown (from War) to sit in. He issued a self-released, self-titled record in 2002, but the following year saw him move to Sparco Records, where he released both Piety Street Session and EP Volume 1. Tragic Magic followed in 2005 and sparked serious interest from Alligator Records, which signed him. They released his Change in the Weather in 2006 and Low on Cash, Rich in Love in 2008. Lindell continued his prolific output with 2009's Gulf Coast Highway, another album of blue-eyed soul and confident guitar work before leaving the label for a few years. Lindell privately issued a couple of albums to sell at gigs -- 2010's Cazadero and 2011's Between Motion and Rest -- the two were combined in a two-disc release entitled West County Drifter on M.C. Records in 2011. That year also saw the release of Live in New Orleans, the first record from his New Orleans-based supergroup Dragon Smoke, which also featured Ivan Neville. The next year brought I Still Love You, another studio set from the guitarist. Dragon Smoke put out another live set, Live at Wanee 2015, but Lindell's next big project was Matters of the Heart. Released in the spring of 2016, Matters of the Heart was co-produced in part by Luther Dickinson and featured guitar from Anson Funderburgh. Lindell returned to Alligator for 2018's Revolution in Your Heart, with percussionist Willie McMains as his only accompaniment. ~Marisa Brown

Although he was not born in Louisiana, Eric Lindell follows Marc Broussard's career path as a young and soulful guitar-slinging upstart with his heart in the R&B of the '60s and his soul in New Orleans. This pastiche of an album released in 2006 collects and remasters the audio for music that has been previously available on tiny, poorly distributed local imprints. Despite its stitched-together origins, the disc holds together remarkably well as a cohesive statement, primarily due to Lindell's low-key yet impressive talents as singer, songwriter, and bandleader. Latin influences such as the percussion (courtesy of War's Harold Brown) and trumpet on "Sunny Daze," along with a reggae lilt on "It Won't Be Long," "Casanova," and "Two Bit Town," bring Caribbean sunshine to the sound. The opening "Give It Time" recalls Traffic in its "Dear Mr. Fantasy" chords, but the tune -- like many on his Alligator Records debut -- snakes around a soulful, gospel-styled, slow-burning vibe that is best described as rootsy. Lindell is loose and seems like he's having a ball throughout. That enthusiasm bleeds into the album's upbeat approach, especially on such frisky, party-ready tunes as "Feel Like I Do." He brings the horns and female backing vocals for an Otis Redding-inspired "All Alone," one of the many examples where Lindell's relaxed yet convincing vocals carry the song. Like much R&B, there aren't many guitar solos and only the sax takes the lead on most instrumental breaks. But the album connects with hummable songs less concerned with individual talents than with the musicians' contribution to the overall groove. As laid-back and casually inviting as a crisp spring day, Lindell kicks off his career for this blues imprint with an impressive and frothy release that shows he's just starting to reveal the full extent of his talent. ~Hal Horowitz

Alligator Records has set a September 7, 2018 release date for Revolution In Your Heart, the irresistible new album from roots rocker Eric Lindell. With his raspy, soulful voice and memorable original material, the songwriter and multi-instumentalist first came to national prominence on Alligator Records in 2006, releasing three critically acclaimed albums filled with songs which became instant fan favorites. After a series of releases for other labels, Lindell now returns to Alligator with Revolution In Your Heart, featuring his most engaging and personal writing and his most enticing, instantly hummable melodies.

Revolution In Your Heart was recorded at Studio In The Country in Bogalusa, Louisiana and produced by Lindell and Benjamin Mumphrey. Lindell plays just about everything on the recording – guitar, bass, keyboards, organ, harmonica – except drums, which are expertly played by Willie McMains. The only other musician on the record is keyboardist Kevin McKendree (Delbert McClinton, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Tinsley Ellis), who plays piano on one song. The twelve universally relatable original songs – many of them autobiographical – combine sunshiny melodies and thick, greasy grooves, and paint vivid pictures of everyday living. From the first note to the last, Revolution In Your Heart feels not only somehow immediately familiar, but also profoundly moving. Asked about the timeless appeal of his songs, Lindell simply says, “Music runs deep, it’s a powerful thing.”

Lindell effortlessly mixes West Coast rock, swampy New Orleans R&B, honky tonk country and Memphis soul, creating American roots music that is both surprisingly fresh and sweetly familiar. Although influenced by American roots music from blues to country to rock, Lindell’s style is all his own. USA Today says, “Lindell’s genre defying music pumps soul into funk, blues and roots.” He has performed thousands of gigs in roadhouses, clubs, concert halls and festivals and has appeared on national radio and television. His live shows overflow with happy, dancing people singing the words to every song.

Lindell’s Alligator debut, 2006’s Change In The Weather delighted and surprised music fans hungry for a truly original artist. His deceptively simple sounding songs, laid back grooves and hook-laden melodies were further enriched by guests including Harold Brown (War), Ivan Neville and Stanton Moore (Galactic). Critics across the country went wild, with reviews and features in Relix, OffBeat, Guitar Player, Down Beat, The New Yorker and many other national and regional publications. 2007’s Low On Cash, Rich In Love and 2009’s Gulf Coast Highway pushed Lindell farther into the spotlight. Appearances on Late Night With Conan O’Brien and National Public Radio’s World Cafe and Mountain Stage solidified his stature as an artist who simply could not be ignored. Many of his songs have appeared in films and television shows, including Boston Legal and Treme. On Matters of the Heart Lindell continues his long-time collaboration with legendary Texas guitarist, Anson Funderburgh, whose phenomenal lead playing adds even more layers of blues and soul to the album. Another friend of Lindell's, Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars, the Black Crowes), co-produced some of the tracks and adds some fantastic resonator slide guitar. “(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66”, often rendered simply as “Route 66”, is a popular song and rhythm and blues standard, composed in 1946 by American songwriter Bobby Troup. It was first recorded in the same year by Nat King Cole, and was subsequently covered by many artists including Chuck Berry in 1961, The Rolling Stones in 1964, and Depeche Mode in 1987. The song’s lyrics follow the path of the U.S. Route 66 highway, which used to run a long distance across the U.S., going from Chicago, Illinois, to Los Angeles, California.

But regardless of length and coverage, Route 66 stands alone among American thoroughfares with regard to history and lore. Jazz, blues, folk, R&B and rock n’ roll have all traveled along the nation’s most iconic stretch of blacktop.

It's hard to put a pinpoint definition on Eric Lindell's music. Although he's been grouped under the broad umbrella of Americana, that's just an easy go-to. True enough, it is American roots music at its finest, but that just scratches the surface of what Lindell brings to the table. For the better part of two decades he's hijacked soul on a cross-country ride that stretches north to the Blues in Chicago, south to the funky vibe of his adopted hometown of New Orleans, east to the R&B of Detroit and west to California for a taste of the Bakersfield sound - and sometimes that's all in one song! Lindell's voice recalls the huskiness of Chris Robinson (Black Crowes) and the soulfulness of Delbert McClinton. Dragon Smoke - Live In New Orleans (2-Disc set)

Dragon Smoke is a band that formed as part of the New Orleans Jazz Fest tradition known as the “Superjam”. The “Superjam” idea is to put together a band of people who don’t normally play together and see what happens. With the dual vocals of Neville and Lindell, matched with the Galactic rhythm section, the band quickly realized, “We are on to something” and has played every Jazz Fest since it’s inception in 2003. This inception took place at the famed Dragon’s Den, hence the name of the band.

From the interplay between the members, you would think that Dragon Smoke has been playing shows forever. Dragon Smoke is looking towards the future, with plans to write and record an album and to do more touring outside of New Orleans and the Bay Area. Born in 1969 in San Mateo, California, blues guitarist Eric Lindell spent much of his youth in nearby Santa Rosa and Forestville. Although he worked as a baker by day, Lindell turned his focus to music in the evenings, honing his chops as a competent vocalist and guitarist by playing in bars around Sonoma County. He produced his debut album, Bring It Back, in 1996, and in 1999 he won the John Lennon Songwriting Competition with his original piece "Kelly Ann." That same year, Lindell decided to move to New Orleans to pursue music in a different location. The move was a beneficial one, as Lindell soon hooked up with Galactic's Stanton Moore and began playing shows around town, frequently enlisting drummers Johnny Vidocovich and Harold Brown (from War) to sit in. He issued a self-released, self-titled record in 2002, but the following year saw him move to Sparco Records, where he released both Piety Street Session and EP Volume 1. Tragic Magic followed in 2005 and sparked serious interest from Alligator Records, which released Change in the Weather in 2006 and Low on Cash, Rich in Love in 2008. Lindell continued his prolific output with 2009's Gulf Coast Highway, another album of blue-eyed soul and confident guitar work. Leaving Alligator Records, Lindell put out a couple of albums to sell at gigs, 2010’s Cazadero and 2011’s Between Motion and Rest, both of which were combined in a two-disc release entitled West County Drifter from M.C.
