"Slow Burn" is his fourth full-length recording he has released with M.C. Records.

Texas country bluesman Alfred "Snuff" Johnson has played guitar since the 1920s, but didn't perform "professionally" for another 60 years, and wasn't recorded until 1994. Johnson was born in Cedar Creek, TX to parents Frank and Pearl Lee Johnson, who were sharecroppers. His father often played the fiddle with his uncle, Will Johnson, a guitarist. Both had an effect on the young Johnson, who watched and listened intently. Eventually, he was allowed to pick up his uncle's guitar. It was also about this time -- around the age of 12 -- that he began using snuff and earned his nickname. His uncle threw country balls regularly, which featured slow dancing, folk blues, and country tunes. The music heard at these in fluenced Snuff's repertoire, as did seeing Mance Lipscomb perform a few times. Snuff's relaxed style includes a steady thumb-strummed bassline that reflects Lipscomb's influence. Johnson began playing his "black cowboy blues at house parties and balls, but also played guitar in church. He settled in Austin after being discharged from the army in 1945 and remained there, working in construction, at a service station and, finally, as a piano mover. He played out (although not for pay) during the '50s and '60s, and in the mid-'70s, met an auto mechanic who happened to be working on a Gibson guitar. Snuff picked it up and played it a bit, starting a friendship with the man. The mechanic was a music fan, Charles Devitalis, who went on to serve as informal advisor to Snuff, who couldn't read or write. After retiring in 1976, Snuff focused on his family (he has 13 children from three marriages) and the church. His material includesre-compositionss of old blues standards such as "Good Morning Blues" and "post-gospel, camp meeting era" religious songs, including hymns like "Going Back to Jesus" and "Old Time Religion." Johnson's performed first professional shows in the late '80s, when he was invited to perform at Austin's Continental Club, and Antone's. He turned down an Austin producer's recording offer in the early '90s, and shortly after was invited by Alan Govenar to play at the Dallas Museum of Art. The following year, Govenar brought Snuff back to Dallas to record, resulting in the 1994 Documentary Arts release, Black Cowboy Blues and Church Songs.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Austin, Texas became more and more of a hotbed of roots music -- everything from electric blues, funk, and soul to Tex-Mex, country, rockabilly, americana, folk, and jazz. One of the independent labels that popped up in Austin was Antone's, which provides a variety of roots music on Austin, Texas: Rockin' the Crossroads. This good-to-excellent sampler offers a generous dose of high-energy electric blues, including Snooky Pryor's "Bury You in a Paper Sack" and Luther Tucker's "You Got What You Wanted." But it also contains everything from the acoustic country blues of Steve James' "Railroad Blues" to Lewis Cowdrey's "Itchy and Scratchy" (which brings a rock edge to James Brown-like funk), Sue Foley's moody soul number "Open Up Your Eyes," and earthy roots-rock/americana tunes like Pat McLaughlin's "Better You Get Ready" and David Halley's "It's Just As Well." Not all of the artists on the album are natives or residents of Austin -- some are Californians, some Midwesterners. Nonetheless, Austin, Texas paints an honest and enjoyable picture of the variety of music one could expect from the Lone Star city and from the Antone's label. ~Alex Henderson

Take Me Back is deep, authentic, and filled with the gut-wrenching blues sounds Kim has made famous for over 40 years. Recorded live in the studio, in mono, Kim delivers the blues as his heroes did in the golden age of the genre in the 1950s. Kim and his all-star band muscle through 16 tracks with some new Wilson songs and a mix of some great blues and R&B gems by the likes of Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Nolan, Larry Williams and more.
"For the last 17 years I have had fond memories of working with Mark Carpentieri at M. C. Records. When we met prior to the, award winning, Big Jack Johnson BBQ sessions I was very impressed with his positive productivity. He runs a tight ship and is always working very hard on your behalf. I’m looking forward to our journey on this record and thanks for welcoming me back aboard!" – Kim Wilson
Over the last 10 years Kim has been the go-to harmonica player. He has recorded with Peter Frampton, Buddy Guy, Mark Knopfler, Paul Simon and Eric Clapton.

Take Me Back was recorded at Big Jon Atkinson’s ultra-authentic Big Tone Studios. Kim Wilson invited some first-class blues musicians for the album including Billy Flynn, Barrelhouse Chuck, Big Jon Atkinson, Rusty Zinn, and Kid Andersen.

"To say that these recording sessions were enjoyable experiences would be a vast understatement! Not only are these fellas’ great musicians but they are also dear friends of mine and I want to thank them for the incredible performances that they gave." – Kim Wilson

Notodden Blues Festival (NBF) is one of the largest blues music festivals in Europe and the largest in Scandinavia. The festival is held in Notodden, Norway, usually in early August. It has been running annually since 1988.

The festival does not aim to be the biggest of its type, but to become Europe's "largest blues experience", which is reflected in their emphasis on quality over quantity.

For years people have tried to talk me into making a box set of these sessions. Well, I’ve finally done it. Recorded the old way, direct to mono with no overdubs and no mixing. If you get it you get it, if you don’t you don’t. There are no fixes, no pitch adjusting, no vocal comps. Just pure blues. Basically, these were three different recording sessions one or two days at a time. Just improvising. Spitting out music one song after the other. The musicians are stellar. Junior Watson, Rusty Zinn, and Kid Ramos on guitar, the dynamite rhythm section of Larry Taylor on the bass and Richard Innes on the drums topped off by some beautiful piano work from Fred Kaplan. Oh, and let’s not forget the horn section of Scott Steen on trumpet and Tom Fabre, who this project is dedicated to, on tenor saxophone. I really feel like I captured some incredible work from Tom who, sadly, passed away a few years ago. A great person and a great musician. People with that combination are always missed. So what you get here is the full musical experience with very little fat cut off of it. I hope you enjoy it and thank you for all of your support. ~Kim Wilson

Harmonica player, songwriter, and singer Kim Wilson is as much a student and historian of classic blues as he is one of the U.S.'s top harmonica players. Simply put, Wilson has taste; when he enters the recording studio, he has a clear vision of what he wants his next record to sound like. Aside from all this, he's also an extremely hard worker and a major road hog, spending upwards of 200 nights a year on the road, playing festivals and clubs throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe with his own Kim Wilson band and leading the Fabulous Thunderbirds.

Although he's long been known as the charismatic frontman for the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Wilson's solo albums -- which feature bands of his own choosing for different tracks -- is where the genius in his work shows through most clearly. Born January 6, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan, Wilson grew up in California. His parents were singers who would sing popular standards on the radio, and while Wilson took trombone and guitar lessons, he didn't discover blues until he was a senior in high school. Wilson's father later worked for General Motors and raised his family in Goleta, California. Wilson dropped out of college and began playing blues full-time in 1970. He had a rented room and lived the hippie existence, getting his harmonica chops together by playing with traveling blues musicians like Eddie Taylor. Even though Wilson had only switched to harmonica in his senior year in high school, his progress on the instrument was rapid and every bit as all-consuming as his blues record-buying habit. Charlie Musselwhite, John Lee Hooker, and Sonny Rhodes were among the other Bay Area musicians Wilson befriended and worked with in clubs. But Wilson didn't meet his biggest mentor until after he moved to Austin in the mid-'70s.

"Muddy Waters was my biggest mentor. He really made my reputation for me, and that was a fantastic time of my life, being associated with that man," he recalled of his early days with the Fabulous Thunderbirds in Austin. There, at Antone's blues nightclub, Wilson and his Thunderbirds would back up whoever came into town, and it didn't take long for the band to earn Waters' blessing.

As a songwriter, Wilson takes his cue from the long-forgotten names like Tampa Red, Roosevelt Sykes, and Lonnie Johnson. His 1993 solo album, Tigerman, for the Austin-based Antone's label, features just three of his own tunes. Being the student of the blues that he is, Wilson was understandably hesitant to record too many of his own tunes when he'd already had a vision in his head of how he was going to rework classics like Joe Hill Louis' "Tiger Man," the album's title track. He followed up his debut with the equally brilliant That's Life (1994), also for Antone's, and again this recording contains just three self-penned songs. Wilson's career took a boost in the '90s with a major-label deal with Private Music/BMG for the Fabulous Thunderbirds and frequent concert appearances with Bonnie Raitt. Wilson's solo albums are solid productions, highly recommended for harmonica students and fans of classic Texas blues and rhythm & blues. ~ Richard Skelly

Big Jack Johnson With Kim Wilson & Pinetop Perkins - The Memphis Barbecue Sessions

12. Things I Used To Do (4:29)

This album is a joy indeed - a journey inside the blues and down the Mississippi Delta. Johnson's always been an expressive singer, and in such a stripped-down setting his voice becomes more important than ever on classics like "Smokestack Lightning" and "My Babe." His guitar work offers the ideal backdrop, too, never fancy, but juke-joint friendly, serviceable, and offering a strong beat.

Bringing in former Fabulous Thunderbirds frontman Kim Wilson to play harmonica proves to be an inspired move - he and Johnson conjure up a blues duo from the '50s, and when legendary pianist Pinetop Perkins sits in on a couple of numbers things really smoke.

The Johnson originals on the album sit comfortably next to the classic covers, and the gutbucket style assures plenty of musical muscle, with Johnson and Wilson constantly pushing each other further. Where drums do come in, on three of the 13 tracks, they might as well not be there, they're so low in the mix and offer so little - they're certainly not missed anywhere else.

On the evidence here, Johnson is every bit as comfortable on his own as he is with the backing of a band, and the more intimate, live setting (the disc was recorded in two days) brings out some subtleties in his singing and playing styles that get lost in a group setting. An enjoyable and even important modern blues record. /Chris Nickson, AllMusic

While British blues guitarist Otis Grand’s albums have received critical acclaim in Europe, somehow they slipped through the cracks in the U.S. market. Originally released in 1994, Nothing Else Matters was reissued in 2003 as part of the Sanctuary Blues Masters series. On this date, Grand pays tribute to guitar hero T-Bone Walker; Grand’s original composition, “5 to 99 Blues,” employs Walker’s famous riffs and he performs sincere covers of “All Night Long” and “Looking Good” from the Magic Sam catalog.

Lending a hand on the disc are Curtis Salgado and Sugar Ray Norcia, who split vocal duties; the House of Blues Horns; and Kim Wilson of the Fabulous Thunderbirds, who blows harp and sings on his self-penned track, “Things I Forgot to Do.” Nothing Else Matters is an enjoyable modern blues date that’s not afraid to celebrate vintage influences. /Al Campbell, AllMusic

12. Round And Around (6:49)
13. Young Girl (2:56)

This one follows just about a year later from Alabama Town and although diehard Karp fans will recognize several of these songs, they are recorded here in a new session with various star-studded guests. Like its predecessor, this one features Mick Taylor, Todd Wolfe, Paul Carbonara, and Dennis Gruenling. New guests include Dave Keyes and Kim Wilson. More than ever before, Karp displays his multi-instrumental skills handling multiple guitars, organ, piano, accordion, and harmonica. He also has a core band handling rhythm, keyboards and mandolin across his mix of blues and roots tunes – with the accent where he wants it—on his songwriting.

Karp’s eye for detail, the range of emotions, and clever sense of humor prevail. While the album may have benefitted from more new material, there are some real gems here that make this a strong effort. Listening to Mick Taylor solo on “The Turning Point” is always enjoyable. Kim Wilson takes his spot-on harp solo in “The Arson’s Match” and Dennis Gruenling’s harp colors “Your Prettiness” and “From Where I Stand,” two of the best tracks. Throughout Karp impresses with his expressive voice and passionate playing.

Karp has led a nomadic life, played with many great artists and has a well of experience to draw from. His wordplay is quite good. In fact, one of my favorite songs of his is “Dirty Weather” from his Blind Pig album Shadows and Cracks, one that I wish he would have reprised here. In any case, there’s bristling animation and energy in these baker dozen’s tunes that surpasses much of Karp’s previous work. It’s apparent immediately with Karp’s opener, “Rolling on a Log,” with its swirling B3 and Kim Wilson’s harp. The energy rarely lets up except when called for on tunes like “Valentine’s Day” and the mandolin-driven “From Where I Stand.” Karp’s personas of an amped-up bluesman and charismatic singer-songwriter are both well represented here. ~Jim Hynes

Tom Principato, longtime linchpin of East Coast favorites Powerhouse, has slowly but surely acquired a nationwide reputation for his well-ordered, exigent blues guitar playing. This set finds the Falls Church, Virginia, resident following an intelligent commercial course, applying himself to attractive covers (from Mink DeVille, Steve Earle, and more) that usually synthesize blues, rock, and soul. "Blue Lights," an original, packs all the emotional ambiguity of the most stirring guitar blues. And his singing is quite good. /Amazon

Personnel: Tom Principato (vocals, guitar, steel guitar, lap steel guitar, 6-string bass); Kim Wilson (harmonica); Pete Barrenbregge, Scott Young (tenor saxophone); Dave Brink (baritone saxophone); Vaughn Nark, Bruce Gates (trumpet); Rick Lillard (trombone); Kevin McKendree (piano); David Palmer, Clark Matthews, Robbie Magruder (drums).

12. One Of These Mornings (5:26)
13. That's It (3:16)
14. You're Sweet (3:39)

Using several harmonica maestros on a disc dedicated to one of the all time harmonica giants - Little Walter - seems like a fitting thing to do.

And that's exactly what Dennis Gruenling did.

Being a formidable player himself, on I Just Keep Lovin' Him, Gruenling is joined by Kim Wilson, Rick Estrin and Steve Guyger - all Little Walter enthusiasts - on harmonica and vocals; along with Dave Gross, Bill Hunt, Rusty Zinn and Bob Welsh on guitar.

On bass, he has Scot Hornick, Steve Wolf and Kedar Roy; and Mike Bram and Marty Dodson on drums.

There’s also Doug “Big Daddy” Sasfai on sax; and - last but certainly not least – Mrs. Gruenling - Gina Fox on vocals.

Attempting to avoid this tribute from being a compilation of overdone covers of Little Walters' greatest hits, Gruenling chose some of the legend’s more obscure works.

The list includes: “Up the Line,” “Lovin' Man,” “I Got To Go,” “Hot Shot,” “Too Young To Know,” “Corbella,” “If You Were Mine,” “My Little Machine,” “Teenage Beat,” “As Long As I Have You,” “Temperature,” “One Of These Mornings,” “That's It,” and “You're Sweet.”

Not being a vocalist himself, Gruenling distributed that duty equally among the four band mates who do sing.

“Lovin' Man” features Guyger singing like one of the many great Chicago bluesmen he's backed up throughout the years, with he and Gruenling both getting in their share of hot licks on the harp.

“Hot Shot” is a hot instrumental. This one features Gruenling alone, and quite aptly, handling the harp work, with great rhythm from Bram and Hornick on the drums and standup bass; and sharp, steady guitar from Dave Gross.

Estrin, with clearly one of the most distinguishable voices, takes over the microphone on “Too Young To Know.” On this track, the man, whose magnetism is surpassed by none, also provides some of the best harp work on the disc.

Doing what seems to come naturally to her, Gina Fox heats it up a bit on “If You Were Mine.” Sultry is a word that - if not careful - can easily become redundant when she is the topic. This track also features tremendous sax work from Big Daddy.

Oddly enough, “Teenage Beat” - an instrumental track that features Gruenling, Estrin, and Wilson all kickin' it on harp - is highlighted by the rhythm section. Wolf and Dodson are absolutely on fire on this one.

It's Wilson's turn to lead on “As Long As I Have You,” and when he's leading, you can never go wrong. Being one of the most soulful white singers these ears have ever heard, and certainly one of the best at blowin' a harp, automatically makes this another of the disc’s best. ~Review by Peter "Blewzzman" Lauro

Walk That Walk, Talk That Talk is the first album the Fabulous Thunderbirds recorded without Jimmie Vaughan. It takes two guitarists -- two good guitarists, by the way -- to fill his place, and even with Duke Robillard and Kid Bangham on board, there is something missing. Though the T-birds have returned to straightahead blues-rock, abandoning the overly commercial production of their previous three albums, they don't sound as distinctive as they did with Vaughan. Still, Kim Wilson blows some good harp, Robillard and Bangham throw out a few stellar solos, contributing to a set of driving blues-rock that will be welcome to fans of the group's earliest records. ~Thom Owens

They may be calling themselves the Roadmasters, but Larry Taylor, Richard Innes and Fred Kaplan have been around doing this stuff as long as I've been listening to this stuff--and that's a long time. At one point they WERE the Hollywood Fats Band and were laying the best trad-blues ensemble this side of the Fabulous Thunderbirds during the late '70s/early '80s, cranking on the same groove with a guitarist as steeped in the genre as Jimmy Vaughn and with chops to match. Since that time they have carried on from time to time as the Hollywood Blue Flames or have backed up everybody who's anybody as an ensemble, pairs, or as a single addition for those needing it laid on right. On this live release they are members of Rusty Zinn's band. ~by Richard Bush
