This is the album to start with on Wet Willie, and their real best-of, a surging, forceful concert recording of white Southern soul and blues-rock at its best. The band holds its own alongside outfits like the Allman Brothers -- no, this isn't the kind of history-making set that At Fillmore East by the latter band constituted, but it is a great show presenting this group and its members at their very best. The playing is hard and muscular, the singing rich and expressive, and they have serious fun with numbers like "Red Hot Chicken" (stretched to ten minutes) and do a nice, laidback "Macon Hambone Blues," surrounded by crunchy renditions of pieces like "Airport." What's more, they switch effortlessly from a lean, guitar-centered blues-rock to a much funkier, sax-driven sound -- maybe it was that diversity that prevented Wet Willie from really breaking big outside of the Southeast. The vibes they were picking up from the audience on New Year's Eve at the Warehouse in New Orleans make this a compelling concert document. /Bruce Eder, AllMusic

Robben Ford & the Blue Line is an electric blues trio, but it's a trio whose leader and guitarist played with Miles Davis and Joni Mitchell, whose drummer Tom Brechtlein played with Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter, and whose bassist Roscoe Beck played with Leonard Cohen. In other words, this is a blues band with serious jazz and singer-songwriter ambitions. Not surprisingly, these former instrumental sidemen are a lot better at infecting the blues with harmonically sophisticated solos and tricky rhythms than they are at singing or songwriting on their album, Mystic Mile.

Songs like "Busted Up" or "Moth to a Flame," both penned by Ford, don't offer much in the way of a lyric, melody, or vocal, but they do build a serious groove around a challenging syncopated figure, and Ford's guitar comes roaring out of the rhythm with solos that don't merely vamp on the chord changes but take those changes into new harmonic territory. Thus it's not surprising that the album's one instrumental, the uptempo blues workout "The Plunge", and the two cover songs, the Cream's "Politician" and B.B. King's "Worried Life Blues", are the highlights.

Opening with the atmospheric ‘You Were My Angel’ – massive nod to Chris Rea and a wonderful track to just cover yourself over with and float off into the bayou: never mind Mighty Boss Cats, this is wonderful number by anyone. ‘She’s My Best Friend’ is a paean to a guitar – with you through thick and thin and always there when all else has failed you. Only eight tracks here including the deep and emotional ‘Omagh’ but immensely satisfying.

This band can be considered as one of the most innovating blues band in Europe of the late nineties. The success of the debute CD "Drip Drip" led the band to performances on the world famous North Sea Jazz Festival and Hollands biggest alternative festival: Lowlands (45.000 att.), also appearing on the Luzerner Blues Sessions in Switzerland, the prestigious South by South West festival in Austin, Texas (1999) and the Belgium Rhythm & Blues Festival.

The band split up in 2003 but the echo still can be heard in the many bands that got inspired by the drive and sound of one of the most sensational blues bands that ever came around.

Dave Myers helped make Chicago blues history as the leader of the Aces-Jukes, Little Walter's backup group during the harmonica genius's heyday in the 1950s. While he's played both guitar and bass on a pile of classic blues recordings as a sideman over the intervening decades, this marks his first album as a featured artist. The wait was evidently worth it, as Myers is flanked by a top-notch band featuring Rusty Zinn on guitar and Kim Wilson on harmonica and simply turns in the best traditional blues record to be released in a long, long time. Myers' guitar style is thoroughly down-home and swinging (especially fine on the instrumental "Legs Up") and has taken on absolutely no modern accoutrements over the years; the band turns in well-formed and integrated performances that recall the Chess studio sessions of the 1950s. Myers' singing voice isn't the strongest, but instead imparts a warm, good-natured blues feeling to it, heard to good effect on "Ting-A-Ling," the Little Walter tribute "Oh Baby," John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson's "Elevate Me, Mama" and "You Can't Love Me That Way." Dave also brings six originals to this 14-track outing, with the title track sounding like a lost Chicago classic from the '50s. Harmonica player Charlie Sayles is starting to carve out a hard-fought niche for himself in U.S. blues circles, thanks to some help from the London-based JSP Records. Sayles has three excellent albums out on JSP, Night Ain't Right (1990), I Got Something to Say (1995), and Hip Guy (2000).

Sayles began to develop his songwriting voice in the mid-'70s, and his debut for the JSP label is far from a straight-ahead blues album. On his second JSP release, Sayles artfully blends funky, gritty urban blues sounds with original, down-to-earth lyrics, successfully avoiding a lot of blues clichés. Perhaps his first big break was being "discovered" by Ralph Rinzler, an organizer for the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife. Rinzler paired Sayles up with Pete Seeger, and after a variety of festival appearances, Sayles ended up moving to Washington, D.C. By the early '80s, while living in Washington, Sayles had begun to form his first bands. Sayles' first record, Raw Harmonica Blues, was issued in 1976, long before blues became fashionable, on the Dusty Road label. Sayles didn't record again for 15 years, when he got picked up by JSP Records. I Got Something to Say has some prominent guests on it, including Washington's most celebrated blues guitar player, Bobby Parker. Also performing on the record is guitarist Deborah Coleman. Hip Guy was released in 2000. Each of Sayles' JSP recordings are well-worth seeking out, even at import prices, because of his original take on blues music. Sayles would be the first to tell you that he's not a straight-ahead Chicago blues player. With a burning desire to entertain and pursue a serious music career, at the age of 18 Alex Butler decided to form a band. April 2012 saw the beginning of the blues/rock band emerge as Red Butler with Alex Butler (guitar), Charlie Simpson (drums), Jane Pearce (vocals) and Steve Eveleigh (bass). July 2014 saw Mike Topp replace Steve.

Drawing upon influences from SRV, Etta James, Joe Bonamassa, Gary Moore, Free, King King, Santana and Derek Trucks the band have developed their own style of writing and have begun producing thoughtful, light hearted and melodic compositions. The band have been mentioned a number of times by the blues media culminating in the award for ‘Best New UK Act’ 2014 via the Writers Poll for Blues Matters!

Following the successful launch of their debut album ‘Freedom Bound’ in summer 2014 the band are working hard on new material for a follow up album. Considerable interest has been shown in this project, which should come to fruition towards the latter part of 2015. Heightened exposure has brought many rewards and Red Butler are now receiving invitations to perform throughout the country at forthcoming festivals and high profile support slots.

"I had the perfect storm in my personal life to draw from when I started work on the album," Wigmore says, while sipping a cold beer and taking the last call of a busy day of interviews. "You can't always be having breakdowns. Life is a whole bunch of things. There's good, there's ups and downs, there's bad, there's ugly, there's amazing, there's awful. There's a flip side to everything. That's why I wanted the album to be boisterous and also soft and contented, which is where I am right now."

The West Side Blues Band have evolved through a few band names and lineups over the years, starting out as the Rhythm Kings, morphing into the Continentals when we got fed up of people asking "wheres Bill?" even though we had the name first :-). Then finaly evolving into the current lineup which concentrates on the sound of the blues from the west side of Chicago, hence the name.

The core throughout has been the combination of Andy Broad on guitar / vocals and Tim Nowell on bass, now joined by Barry Leaney on Harmonica and Tim Peters on Drums.

We didn't realize that the music we loved was being covered by our favorite bands, and only later did we start mining the history of the Blues to discover the original artists and songwriters. When The Suspects started playing together, we naturally gravitated toward the originators of the soundtrack of our youth, and began re-interpreting those songs in a way that felt right for us. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoy playing.

Lurrie Bell kicks off Let's Talk About Love with a song about love, a move that might seem a bit odd or risky for anyone steeped in blues tradition. It's a tradition, after all, that has often seemed like a depository of relationship problems and sexual come-ons. Bell delivers the upbeat "Let's Talk About Love" against the backdrop of a full electric band featuring his own stinging guitar work. Bell is joined by a "loose but together" band, featuring rhythm guitarist Anthony Palmer, bassist Felton Crews, drummer Kenny Smith, pianist Sidney James Wingfield, and a number of guests. The players are comfortable with one another, and each is in his own element whether tackling a slow burner like "Chicago Is Loaded with the Blues" or a swinging number like "You Ought to Be Ashamed." Of course the promise of the opener, "Let's Talk About Love," is too good to last, attested to by titles like "You Ought to Be Ashamed" and "Why (Am I Treated So Bad)." These songs are a cliché for sure and certain to never make it onto a Gloria Steinem mixtape, but as far as blues go, they sound superb. Bell makes sure to alter his tempos and arrangements to keep the listener listening, and there is also an interesting acoustic arrangement for "Feeling Good." For blues fans and anyone who enjoys good roots music, Bell and his comrades have made a solid album. ~Ronnie D. Lankford Jr

Lurrie Bell is a throwback and so is Blues in My Soul. It's the sound of classic small-band Chicago blues as played in the '50s and '60s: no flash, no showboating, and no screaming guitar...just solid ensemble playing. Of course, as the son of Carey Bell, Lurrie comes by it naturally, having learned at the feet of any number of Chicago blues legends. The set is mostly covers, but the only real warhorse is "'Bout the Break of Day," which suffers slightly from overexposure. Bell also contributes a handful of originals, with the nicely personal title track as an album highlight. Lurrie's got a gruff but soulful voice and his guitar style harks back to players like Jimmy Rogers (who he covers here twice). The album was cut with Bell's regular working band, with some tasty added horns on two cuts. If you like your Chicago blues old-school style, check out Blues in My Soul. ~Sean Westergaard

A new release of blues and roots songs - my own personal bluesfest diary album. This album captures the range of blues and roots I like - acoustic 'almost' jazz story telling blues, some flat out 'dirty' blues and shimmy bass grooves.

Playing on the album are an eclectic range of people that I've met along the way and performed and recorded these songs with. My brother Oliver (aka Oltay) has shared much of the journey adding vocals and bass to many of the songs. Each song has been recovered from original studio recordings on Digital Audio Tape (DAT) and transferred, with some tidying up, to uncompressed music wav files. Afterwards each song has been consistently mastered, using LANDR Mastering, to ensure optimal audio quality and listening pleasure....

A lot has changed for Jimmy "Duck" holmes since the release of his first album in 2006. He's been nominated for awards and invited to play major festivals. But for the most Holmes' life hasn't changed much. He still lives in the house where he was born and he still runs the Blue Front Café, the rural juke joint his parents opened when he was an infant. Holmes continues to play his blues in the same mournful style that made his hometown of Bentonia, famous among blues lovers through the music of Skip James and Jack Owens. Several cuts were recorded in the back room at Duke's juke joint, but the bulk of the recordings are from a session at the Big toe Studio in Duncan, MS. For the most part it's just Duck and an acoustic guitar. For three raucous tracks he plugs in with Lee Williams on drums. regardless of what he plays, Duck never loses sight of the local tradition of straight Bentonia blues.

Slim's only full album (his earlier recordings show up on several compilations) is one of the great "rediscovery" albums of the genre. Five of the 15 tracks here are with a full band, but the remaining solo performances are the real treasure trove. These range from full-stops-out one-man band numbers ("I'm Hunting Somebody" is a true classic) to unaccompanied harmonica pieces ("Mama Blues," "Jonah") to autobiographical recitations like "A Dip of Snuff and a Narrow Escape" that are utterly charming in their simplicity. Chris Barnes plays his blues by planting tongue firmly in cheek, and then biting that tongue with heaping sarcasm and wit. Add in a dash of topical social commentary alongside the funky grooves and thunderous rhythmic assault and you’ve got the foundations of one of the most entertaining, if not pertinent, blues/roots releases in recent memory.

The Scranton native, who has done NEPA proud for the last 30-plus years as a successful comedian, writer, actor, club owner (he and partner Jacqui are proprietors of the successful gay bars Flaming Saddles in New York and L.A.), and all-around master performer, has just released a blues album under the moniker Bad News Barnes & The Brethren of Blues Band. The album, titled “90 Proof Truth,” is a titanic statement, both lyrically and musically – but that’s nothing new for this outspoken personality.

The new album sees some serious talent backing him, including Tom “Bones” Malone and “Blue” Lou Marini of Blues Brothers fame on horns, as well as guitarist Felicia Collins of David Letterman’s CBS Orchestra. There’s also contributions from Bette Sussman, who’s spent time as pianist in Cyndi Lauper and Bette Midler’s bands, and drummer Chris Parker of Bob Dylan and Joe Cocker fame.

Barnes specializes in a variety of blues called hokum, defined as “a humorous song which uses extended analogies or euphemistic terms to make sexual innuendos.” He’s not limited in this definition, though, as he tackles everything from the ideal of having a woman in the White House (“America Needs a Queen”), the corporate “fattening” of the populace (“Salt, Sugar, and Fat”), and the sheer folly of the religious right (“Westboro Baptist Blues”).

The PeeWee Bluesgang (Peewees) is a five-member band,that plays BluesRock.
Founded in 1977 in Iserlohn ,the PeeWees were playing primarily own compositions.Its members were the singer and frontman Richard Hail, guitarist Thomas Hesse, bass player Heribert Grothe,drummer Siehoff Martin and saxophonist Karlos Boes.
The band had their first gig in the "Balver cave" at a jazz festival.
During the first two years ,the singer and keyboard player was Reiner Hänsch from the band "Zoff" . Hänsch left the Peewees in 1979 and Richard hail became the singer. Now Stefan Janke was sitting at the keyboard ,but he left the band again after only a short period of time (after a gig in "Uncle Pö" in Hamburg.)
In 1980 piano tracks of the former studio album were still to be recorded, that's when the Hamburg keyboardist Thomas Waßkönig stepped in - especially as the record company's rehearsal for the album was imminent and there was a lack of time. After these recordings, who were very much to the liking of Hail and Hesse,Waßkönig became an integral part of the band from 1980 to 1984 , then he returned to the band "Grobschnitt".
Two years after its inception they released their first LP . By participating in open-air concerts abroad, the band became well known far beyond the borders of Germany. There were tours with Chicken Shack , Canned Heat , Jack Bruce and the Stray Cats,among others . In 1980 they performed in Poland. In 1981 the Pee Wee Blue Gang played at WDR's Rockpalast in Cologne.
In the 1980s, the "Pee Wee Blue Gang" was also the backing band of "Drafi Deutscher" at live concerts.
Since the mid 1990s, the saxophone replaced the keyboard.
On 31 December 2008, the band,who released 15 albums so far (see discography), broke up.In 2010 PeeWee Bluesgang celebrated their comeback. Since then there is a different line-up (including Nico Kozuschek on keyboards)

La banda fue formada en 2000. Está integrada por Ike Parodi (voz), Nahuel Antuña (bajo), Willy Echarte (guitarra) y Mario Laurino (batería). Mario y Nahuel son oriundos de Rosario e Ike y Willy de Roldán, ciudad vecina, y actualmente residen en Rosario también. Se conocieron en las históricas zapadas del pub “Chicago Blues”, que hoy ya no existe. Deciden formar una banda debido a la afinidad musical que los unía y une.

Tocaron en innumerables pubs y boliches de Rosario y su zona de influencia haciendo covers de las bandas que admiran y más tarde insertando composiciones propias en el repertorio.

El embrujo rosarino VUDÚ presenta TOCAMOS IGUAL "Blues Band"
su 5to trabajo independiente, producido integramente por la banda durante el 2014, grabado en los estudios de "El Abasto" por Alvaro Villagra, y que se presento oficialmente en Vorterix Rosario el dia 16 de mayo pasado.

En esta ocasión la banda pome a la luz, su perfil mas blusero, estilo que calo hondo desde los origenes en los integrantes del grupo, rindiendo de esta manera tributo a grandes influencias nacionales e internacionales.
El disco se encuentra compuesto de 13 temas:

Robert Cray is to release a double CD and video package 4 Nights of 40 Years Live.

The first CD is fresh, live recordings from four nights recently recorded at four venues in the LA area. With his current band --longtime bassist, collaborator and friend Richard Cousins, keyboardist Dover Weinberg (who was in Cray's first band) and drummer Les Falconer (O'Jays, Keb 'Mo) ' Cray fronts a group that is solid, seasoned and vital. The playing is in the moment, and the sound is singular.

The thirteen cuts are selected from the Cray Band's recording library of 20 releases. Among them are rock radio favorites 'Bad Influence' and 'Right Next Door (Because of Me),' the soul searing 'Love Gone to Waste,' and 'These Things,' a bluesy ballad that features one of Cray's string-bending and mind-blowing guitar solos. The live CD is the fourth Cray Band release produced by Steve Jordan, who plays drums on several cuts. Also guesting are vocalist Kim Wilson and harmonica player Lee Oskar, tenor saxophonist Trevor Lawrence, trumpeter Steve Madaio and saxophonist Tom Scott.

The bonus CD is a revealing glimpse of Cray's early career and the promise of a future that would reward fans for decades. Selected from the band's set at the 1982 San Francisco Blues Festival and a 1987 appearance on the Dutch TV Show 'Countdown,' the music captures the band's youthful presence and its ability to revive the blues without abandoning it. Included are favorites from the Cray's Band 80s set lists; 'Smoking Gun' and 'Too Many Cooks.'

After two early albums of traditional blues, followed by six albums of their own striking songs, New Zealand band Kokomo returned to a labour of love that they have planned for many years - an album of the songs of Bob Dylan.

This isn't your standard album of politely-imitated Dylan favourites. Will Wilde picked up his first harmonica at the age of 16 and played it until his lips bled. Weaned on the likes of Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson and Buddy Guy, Wilde grew up steeped in traditional Chicago Blues, yet his focus as an artist remains resolutely on the future.

Wilde fuses his passion for blues with his love of rock. He takes what's authentic and powerful about the music he grew up loving and introduces the raw energy of bands such as Led Zeppelin, Free and Deep Purple without losing the heart and conviction of the blues.

The title of Dave Steen & Jailhouse Tattoo’s new CD came easily. “Every town is a town full of secrets”, says Steen. “You could have a wide spot in the road with only 4 residents, and each one of them has secrets they’re hoping the other three don’t know and never find out. And anyway,” he adds with a wink, “it’s more fun to sing about people that have made some foolish choices.”

In a career spanning several decades, Steen has written songs for Solomon Burke, Junior Wells, Son Seals, Eric Burdon, Maria Muldaur, James Cotton, Terry Evans, Jo-El Sonnier, and The Cate Brothers, as well as modern blues torch bearers Coco Montoya, Michael Burks, Sherman Robertson, James Armstrong, Larry McCray, D.A. Foster and others. Over a dozen songs co-written with Montoya have appeared on that artist’s albums, and Steen played guitar on Coco’s 2000 Alligator Records release, “Suspicion”.

When it was time to record his own project, the Lincoln, Nebraska-based artist turned to some of the region’s most accomplished players to help him lay down this collection of all-original songs. But when the album was completed, Steen still had no idea what to call the band. In the end, he borrowed a phrase from one of the CD’s songs, and credited the project to “Dave Steen & Jailhouse Tattoo”. Steen explains: “It sounded rough & ready, and that definitely describes both the guys and the feeling on the record as a whole.”

It's hard to think of another musical instrument that is so closely associated with the blues as the humble harmonica or "harp". Since the 1920s - one hundred years after its invention - blues musicians have taken advantage of its low cost, volume and portability and have made some of the most influential of 20th century music. In the hands of early masters like DeFord Bailey and Jaybird Coleman the harp rose above its earlier status of a simple novelty instrument, while Jazz Gillum and John Lee "Sonny Boy #1" Williamson helped to define the sound of post-war blues bands. From the early 1950s, the harmonica became a key component of the blues almost entirely due to the recordings of the musicians on this compilation.

A quick glance at the track listing reveals that just about every post-war harmonica player of note is here together with some rather more (undeservedly) obscure names. (No Sonny Terry, you say? Well, he's blowing on Cousin Leroy's "Up The River"). Legendary figures rub shoulders with rather less familiar names. To the initiated, however, Eddie Hope's "A Fool No More", Papa Lightfoot's "Wine, Women And Whiskey" and Little Willy Foster's "Little Girl" are long-time classics. Legendary Sun recordings like Jimmy (de Berry) & Walter (Horton)'s "Easy" and Dr Ross' "Chicago Breakdown" are interspersed with masterpieces from the Chess studios by Little Walter ("Juke") and Jimmy Rogers ("If It Ain't Me") and Muddy Waters, Otis Spann, Champion Jack Dupree, Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley and Eddie Taylor are among the accompanists. Recorded between 1947 and 1968, this collection includes several of the greatest examples of harp blues ever recorded.

Messed Up only showcases one facet of the late piano-playing singer's multi-faceted discography, but it's one of the most fascinating -- his 1956-1958 stay at Chicago's Cobra Records. Under Willie Dixon's supervision, Burrage recorded in a variety of styles -- rockin' blues ("Satisfied," the amusing "You Eat Too Much"), novelty stuff ("Stop for the Red Light," complete with crashing sound effects reminiscent of Nervous Norvus), and straight-ahead rock & roll ("Betty Jean"). ~Bill Dahl
