Jack DeKeyzer is a jack of many trades, skilled as a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and even a producer. He has made a name for himself in the genres of rock and country, but his strongest ties are to blues. His professional musical career started in the '80s with a group called the Bopcats. After completing a couple of albums as a Bopcat, he moved on to the Rock Angels, and then finally went solo. Since breaking out on his own, DeKeyzer has won a number of awards, including Best Blues Album, Best Guitarist, Best Blues Recording, and many others. He has also been nominated for a Juno Award.

DeKeyzer was born in England. He discovered his love for music early and found that playing the guitar came easy. Over his long years in the music world, he has worked with various bands, done session guitar work for numerous artists, and started his own record label, Blue Star. His debut solo album, Hard Working Man, was released in 1991 by Warner Music. It took four years for his sophomore recording, Wild at Heart, to appear. He finished out the '90s with one more full-length offering, Down in the Groove. Some of the tunes on DeKeyzer's blues recordings are "The Way that I Love You," "I Need a Break," "High on Your Love," "Touch of the Blues," and "When Love Walks Out." /Biography by Charlotte Dillon, AllMusic

15. Rock 'N' Roll Girl (Live Diamond Club CBC, 1990) (3:20)
16. Blue Train (3:06)

Well folks, here it is in all its ragged glory. Sixteen of what I consider my best tracks, spanning 24 years of recordings, condensed into 70+ minutes of blues, rock and soul good times! Opening with a lift from Bill Shakespeare, things start off swinging regally with Music is the Food of Love, which pretty well summons up three of my musical loves - blues, soul and jazz. Soul Lover is a Latin, blues romance inspired by Chicago Blues and Mexican heat. Next we hit the road and cruise in my old Cadillac-Texas style with Ride With Me. (I drive the Hyundai minivan now!) It features a great David McMorrow solo.

Blues Thing, from the album of the same name, is somewhere between Hi, Stax, Memphis and Whitby, Ontario. Engine Trouble is one of my most popular tunes and this is the original version recorded at famed Liquid Sound, Toronto, which eventually had to close because of flooding and leaking pipes! High On Your Love is a soul rocker, evoking Stones and Stax. That’s The Only Time won the International Song Competition’s first prize for blues composition and kept me in guitar strings for a long time. I think it’s one of my best lyrics, but damn if I can ever remember them all! Gambler’s Blues is a rollicking nod to the King, featuring a young Tyler Yarema rocking the piano.

Cotton Candy goes way back to my Bopcat rock’n roll days. Speaking of cats... Who Let The Cat (Out Of The Bag) is a super fun track with a bunch of Chicago and Toronto blues legends, including the great Willie “Big Eyes” Smith on drums and Bob Stroger on bass. Nothing in the World is one of my favourite and most personal tunes and was a hit on Country Music TV back in the late 90’s. This is the R&B version recorded live, featuring a fantastic Dave Dunlop solo. My Love Has Gone was recorded live in Toronto and has never been released on CD. I think it’s a passionate performance by everyone in the band. The Way That I Love You, combines, blues and soul jazz with some interesting Groove Dr keyboards.

Next up Hard Working Man is an out take and is a funky Memphis style take on the tune that was the title track of my first solo album back in 1991. It features great solos from Martin Aucoin and Chris Murphy. Rock-a-billy was a big part of my career from 79-85 and Rock’n Roll Girl is a live CBC recording of a previously unreleased song. It is blazing. I may have to start playing a Telecaster again! Finally, my first commercially successful tune, Blue Train, although not blues, was written in honour of Muddy Waters. It’s been enjoyable and emotional revisiting all these memories and recordings. I hope you enjoy this record as much as I have loved putting it all together! /Liner notes by Jack de Keyzer

Myles Goodwyn has been busy: celebrating the 50th Anniversary of his band April Wine at the Ex in August, an appearance with his blues band at the Southside Shuffle and now with the release of his second blues album. Friends of the Blues 2 does carry on from the first volume in format with a star-filled list of Friends but has even better songs than that JUNO-nominated album. Most of the songs feature Russ Billard on keys, JR Smith on drums and Bruce Dixon on bass. They supply excellent support for Goodwyn and his cast of Friends. Special mention should be made of Reeny Smith and Lisa MacDougall as these two wonderful singers supply background vocals on many of the songs. The opener is a rocking delight: in “Hip Hip”, Goodwyn recalls his introduction to the blues travelling through the states as a young man, name checking Buddy Guy and with an absolutely superb piano part played by Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne. A creative arrangement graces the Womack’s “All Over Now”, making it rather different from the Stones’ version you might remember. This one has a solid harp solo from Mike “Shrimp Daddy” Reid who hasn’t been heard from much since his move to the east. “You Got it Bad” channels Sonny and Brownie in a well-sung leaving song featuring Matt Andersen on acoustic guitar and Dewey Reeds on harmonica. “Fish Tank Blues” is built on an especially raunchy slide guitar part by Halifax guitarist Will Van Hansolo but little else. “Daddy Needs New Shoes” is a great little rocker featuring Jack Semple on guitar and John Campbelljohn on slide – Daddy is sending the wife out to work. “Being Good” starts with a slow introduction by Angel Forrest before the band kicks in with Goodwyn’s verse. Angel returns and Martin Davidson gets a nice sax solo – a marvelous duet performance. “I Love my Guitar” is exactly what it says: no guests, just Goodwyn celebrating and playing. His romping “Help Me Baby”, is a jump blues that features Joe Murphy on harp and Bill Stevenson on piano, Montreal’s Steve Segal solos on electric guitar. The acoustic “When Your Ship Came In (I Was at the Airport Drinking) features Jack de Keyzer on bottleneck and Sherman Doucette on harmonica – our narrator has a problem. “I Saw Someone That Wasn’t There (And it Was You)” has David Gogo as the featured lead guitarist – his partner is long gone but not for him. Goodwyn’s Friends all contribute to making topflight albums for you to listen to at home but the fine players from the Maritimes he brings with him for live shows are special too. ~John's Blues Picks

14. Hard Working Man (4:19)
15. Rock'n Roll Girl (3:20)
16. Blue Train (3:06)

Drawn from throughout his storied, twenty-four-year career this immediately becomes a ‘must have’. For this set, he has re-mastered and re-mixed the songs and added one from his side-career as a first call guitarist for Electro-Fi Records plus three previously unreleased tunes. As this collection conclusively proves, and as his many fans already know, Jack’s mastery of different styles is his strongest suit – his blend of blues with soul and jazz is unique. The big band blues of “Music Is The Food Of Love” starts off followed by the Latin blues of “Soul Lover”. “Ride With Me” is a classic driving rocking blues. “Blues Thing” might have come from one of Albert King’s Stax discs done Whitby style. The magnificent slow blues “Engine Trouble” gets featured in almost every live show, here we get the original from Six String Lover. After the Stones/Stax “High On Your Love”, comes the songwriting award winning slow blues “That’s The Only Time”. BB King was channeled for “Gambler’s Blues” to great effect. “Cotton Candy” goes back to his Rock‘n Roll days, as do several others here. “Who Let The Cat Out Of The Bag” comes from the Willie “Big Eyes” Smith CD, Juke Joint Rockers, featuring Jack singing on a swinging group vocal blues. “Nothing In The World” was a country hit for him, we get an R&B version done live (at Hugh’s Room) on Silver Blues, the original was on Hard Working Man, from 1991. The first unreleased song is the most recent, a live performance from the 2014 Waterfront Blues Festival here. It’s another fine slow blues, “My Love Has Gone”, worth the price of admission alone. It’s followed by another live song, from The Corktown Sessions, the rocking “The Way That I Love You”. Also unreleased is “Hard Working Man”, a funky number that didn’t make it to Silver Blues, you have it now. Next up we go all the back to his earliest, rockabilly days and a live CBC recording of “Rock‘n Roll Girl”. The generous, seventy-minute set ends with 1991’s “Blue Train”, his first hit, dedicated to and about Muddy Waters. Jack has attracted many of our best players for his bands over those years, too many to list, needless to say that they all contribute mightily. ~John's Blues Picks

The Best Of Jack De Keyzer Vol. 1

Jack De Keyzer - 2 albums: Checkmate / The Corktown Sessions

When singer-guitarist Jack de Keyzer was a kid living in England during the early 1960s, Cliff Richard and the Shadows were big. Really big. “That’s what got me enamoured with the electric guitar,” de Keyzer said, paying special tribute to Hank Marvin, lead guitarist for the Shadows. “I’m about 10 years younger than those guys, but whenever you read interviews from [Jeff] Beck or [Jimmy] Page, they always cite Hank Marvin as an influence. A few years later, we had Cream and [Jimi] Hendrix and all that, so that kind of clinched it for me.”

He got his first guitar in elementary school, but he remembers its arrival being anti-climactic. “My parents didn’t know much about music, so the guitar was probably way too big for me. It kind of sat at the foot of my bed.” When the family moved to Hamilton, Ont., in 1965 — de Keyser was 10 — he got a “cheapo electric guitar,” and was off to the races.

The Beatles became a worldwide phenomenon about the same time, but the British-blues die of Cream had already been cast. De Keyzer’s fondness was not for the pop music of the Fab Four, but the rocking electric blues being made fashionable by everyone from the Rolling Stones to Jimi Hendrix. “Blues is the backbone of everything I do,” de Keyzer said. “I play a lot of different styles of music, from country to rockabilly. But if it doesn’t have blues running through it, I don’t like it. It’s got to have that greasy blues thing going on.” ~mdevlin

Myles Goodwyn is back with the blues and has brought some friends along with him!

Myles Goodwyn's passion for the blues began in 60's when he started listening to American blues artists like BB King, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. Although the blues songs he wrote over the years never made it onto an April Wine album, he kept saving them for the blues album he knew he was going to make one day. Myles Goodwyn And Friends Of The Blues is the result of these sessions.

Some of the Friends joining Goodwyn are Jack de Keyzer, Garret Mason, David Wilcox, Amos Garret, Kenny "Blues Boss" Wayne, Joe Murphy, Frank Marino, Shaun Verreault, Bill Stevenson, Rick Derringer and more.

Dan McKinnon - 2 albums: Dan McKinnon / ASAP: As Sharp As Possible

Mixing equal parts musical scholar, businessman and tattooed rock n’ roll rebel, Toronto guitarist Dan McKinnon is not your average blues rocker. While his music is rooted in blues styles ranging from traditional, country and electric, McKinnon has also publicly declared his love for glam rock, fusion, hard bop, and heavy metal. It is this mélange of musical influences that has created the sound that McKinnon is known for and presents on his new CD As Sharp As Possible.

His self-titled debut E.P. was released in early 2012 to glowing reviews and widespread airplay across North America – including regular positions on the Roots Music Report charts. “Dan McKinnon is certainly ready for the spotlight. His debut EP shines a light on the wide spectrum of sounds he can create. From the slow and soulful to the edgy solos that really bite, the road ahead knows no limits.” (Blues Rock Review).

[4:00] 1. Satisfied
[4:27] 2. Blues for Brother Nelson
[4:11] 3. Bad Habit
[4:06] 4. Some Kind of Special

Toronto bluesman Dan McKinnon shines as he shows several different sides on his new self-titled EP. He blends a lot of influences into his four songs, taking the listener right back in time.

There is beautiful Albert King style guitar playing, an unstoppable groove and a lot of big, dirty riffs, which draw the listener in right from the big riffed, funky bassline of the first track “Satisfied.” He shows a touch of jazz on the instrumental “Blues for Brother Nelson,” which features an upbeat walking bass line, plenty of groove and tasteful guitar solos interspersed throughout. He slows things down on the slinking “Bad Habit,” where he gets to show how tastefully he can play as well as how well he can sing. He ends the EP by showing his rocking side on “ Some Kind of Special,” which features a fast walking bassline and big belting vocals. All together the four songs show off the many facets of McKinnon’s bluesy personality.

Produced by JUNO Award winning blues guitarist Jack de Keyzer and recorded at Canterbury Studios, As Sharp As Possible features Dan McKinnon on guitar and vocals, Aaron Carter on bass and Jon Foster on drums. Each of the ten songs were written by McKinnon with topics that range from relationships, self-reflection and personal loss. From the heavy opening riffs on the first track “Ain’t Looking Back”, to the slow groove and soulful solos on “Killing Time”, and the forlorn lyrics and classic blues feel on “One Regret”, the combination of McKinnon’s voice and guitar playing, along with the solid foundation from the band, As Sharp As Possible will quickly become a favourite among blues fans all over.

Only in his thirties, McKinnon’s education, life experiences and talent will certainly ensure a long and healthy career in the blues genre. “Dan McKinnon is one of the brightest new lights on the blues scene. A well-schooled guitarist, he adds just the right amount of jazz intuition to his searing blues playing. With a nice vocal tone, killer riffs and wicked guitar chops Dan McKinnon is a name you will be hearing a lot about in the coming months, years and decades.”, says producer Jack de Keyzer.
