Dr. Helander & Third Ward, founded in 2017, and sometimes referred to as "supergroup of Finnish blues" are celebrating their eighth year of operation with their fourth album. These veteran musicians once again exhibit considerable potential in songwriting and performance - the album consists of 10 tracks, all but one being originals. These are characteristically hard-hitting songs, the music heavily dominated by masterfully played guitars and fabulous drumming throughout. As the group's main vocalist, Ilkka Helander delivers his powerful lines on most songs, with Esa Kuloniemi spitting out his furious vocals on his own title Big Bad Wolf.

Helander Co. is a Helsinki-based band, whose music mixes the Afro-American legacy with a wide array of blues-related musical influences. With original songwriting and versatile musicianship Helander Co. today displays a unique and inimitable style. The band’s key figure is guitarist and vocalist Dr. Helander, whose virtuoso guitar playing compares with the highest world class and whose voice expresses a more than three-decade devotion to the blues.

Second guitar is played by Jonni Seppälä, another highly acclaimed master of the blues guitar. These two axmen create a tough sound often exhilarated by rivaling twin-guitar duels. The foundation is laid by drummer Juha Litmanen and bassist Petri Loikala. Helander Co. is famous for its amazing live performances, irrespective of playing on a smoky club stage or on a big concert venue.

Finnish blues power trio Dr. Helander & Third Ward have progressed to their third album, Shining Pearls, which will of course play the main role in Malmitalo's album release concert.

Like the band's previous Bluelight Records recordings Meat Grindin' Business (2018) and Traffic Jam on the Back Street (2020), which has been playing since 2017, the new album also consists almost exclusively of original material and a couple of current loans.

Around the same time, the band's frontman Dr. Ilkka Helander celebrates even decades - the musical think tank between Delta (Kurikka) in Southern Poznan and Delta (Clarksdale) in Mississippi has already been fueled by him on a time scale of 70 years! Thus, we will also hear a lot of accumulated material along the way.

The third album of Helander Co., Fodder, consisting exclusively of original song material was released in February 2001, has gained extremely positive reviews and enthusiastic responses in Finland and elsewhere in Europe. Fodder won the award for the best domestic blues record of 2001 in the audience poll of the national radio channel Radiomafia. The band’s earlier records Big Cold Beer (1995) contained mostly versions of basic blues, whereas the second one, Smooth and Rough, largely presented original compositions and exhibited a wider selection of musical influences. Smooth and Rough won the award for the best domestic blues record of 1998 in the audience poll of the national radio channel, Radiomafia. Furthermore, together with top international blues artists, Helander Co appeared on the Bluespower CD of 2000, which is a compilation of the best live performances from the Radiomafia "Roots Evening" program over a period of ten years.

The eleven songs on the album are based on blues tradition, ranging in spirit from the sparky and rugged modern electric delta style through blues-rock to a jazzy feeling, with some carefully selected covers from the blues legacy. On Freedom Music, Dr. Helander is accompanied by His Medicine Men - a bunch of musicians representing Finland's most heavyweight class.

The previous three albums of Dr. Helander were under the name of Helander Co. Of those albums, especially the latest one entitled "Fodder" received a great deal of positive critique also from abroad. Both "Fodder" and the preceding "Smooth And Rough", in their respective years of release, were elected the best domestic blues albums in the national radio poll.

Guitarist-vocalist Dr. Helander is a blues man typical of his generation. After being infected at the end of the sixties with British blues when listening to the valve radio, he later dived deeply into various blues genres and started a long career in music. Since the 90's, Dr. Helander has released four albums, which have received praising reviews in many countries.

Dr. Helander's guitar playing on the album is exclusively acoustic - while being famous for his electric guitar work, this should be not surprising as he has always included acoustic blues on his albums. A special guest appearance on the album is made by Charlie Musselwhite (harmonica), one of the greatest living blues legends and Grammy winner for the best blues album in 2014.
