Tracy Nelson, one of the most powerful voices in American music, has emerged from a lengthy recording hiatus with the album of a lifetime, a musical self-portrait spanning her entire career. Life Don’t Miss Nobody is a 13 track collection that stretches back to her start as a guitar-picking Wisconsin teen playing coffeehouses through an unparalleled career, now in it’s sixth decade, singing blues, country, New Orleans R&B and gospel, and performing in such storied music meccas as 1960s San Francisco and 1970s Austin in her epic, genre-busting musical journey.

But this is no nostalgia trip. The title song is a brand-new composition from the woman whose “Down So Low” has become a modern standard. She’s kept busy performing and recording with long-time musical friends in projects like Corky Siegel’s Chamber Blues and with the freewheeling all-star Blues Broads – Angela Strehli, Annie Sampson and Dorothy Morrison. Even so, roots lovers have waited a long time for a new Tracy Nelson album, and no one’s more excited than Tracy.

“I haven’t made a record in over 10 years,” she says. “I’ve been wanting to do every one of these songs for a really long time. I wanted to get a little bit of everything, all the kinds of music that I love.”

Life Don’t Miss Nobody is Tracy Nelson’s own Great American Songbook, featuring iconic composers like Hank Williams, Ma Rainey, Willie Dixon, Allen Toussaint, Chuck Berry, Doc Pomus, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and the Founding Father of American Song, Stephen Foster. Foster’s “Hard Times” in here in two settings, both featuring Tracy on 12 string, the first time she’s recorded on guitar since her 1964 debut, Deep Are The Roots.

Tracy’s labor of love includes the album’s personnel. Produced by Roger Alan Nichols (Steven Tyler, Larkin Poe) and tracked at Nashville’s Sound Emporium in just three days, Life Don’t Miss Nobody features the state-of-the-art roots rhythm section of piano masters Kevin McKendree (Delbert McClinton, Brian Setzer) and Steve Conn (Bonnie Raitt, Sonny Landreth), upright and electric bassist Byron House (Robert Plant’s Band of Joy, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band), Nashville A-list drummer John Gardner (Dixie Chicks, Taylor Swift), Larry Chaney (Edwin McCain) and Mike Henderson (SteelDrivers, Chris Stapleton) on guitars.

Blues vocalist Irma Thomas was born Irma Lee on February 18, 1941, in Ponchatoula, Louisiana. She was raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, and attended New Orleans’ McDonald 41 public school. Thomas displayed her early vocal talents as a teen. She sang with a Baptist church choir and a gospel quartet at Home Mission Baptist Church. Her very first recording was a school song, which was recorded at Cosmo’s studio with fellow classmates. At the age of eleven, Thomas won The Ritz Theater’s talent night and two years later, she auditioned for Specialty Records.

Her big break came in 1959 when she captured the attention of band leader Tommy Ridgley while she was a waitress at New Orleans’ Pimlico Club. Thomas offered to sing with Ridgley and his band against the wishes of her boss, who fired her for singing instead of waiting on tables. Ridgley arranged a recording contract for her with a local label, Ron Records. Her debut single, Dorothy LaBostrie’s “You Can Have My Husband, But Please Don’t Mess With My Man” hit #22 on the Billboard R&B charts in May 1960. Thomas felt that Ron Records did not pay her the royalties she deserved, so she left them to join the Minit record label. Most of her early 1960s Minit recordings were written and produced by Allen Toussaint and were strong regional sellers. In 1963, Minit was bought by Imperial Records. Thomas’ first single with Imperial, “Wish Someone Would Care,” was the biggest hit of her career and reached #17 on Billboard’s pop charts in the spring of 1964. Thomas released nine singles and two albums during her three-year period with the Imperial label. During the 1960s, Thomas was a popular performer on the Southern college circuit. In 1970, Thomas moved to California where she worked at a department store and as an automobile parts salesperson. During this time, she continued working club dates on weekends and also recorded for several labels, including Atlantic Records in 1971. In the mid-1970s, she moved back to New Orleans where she remained popular as a live performer.

Her comeback as a recording artist started in 1986 when she produced an album, The New Rules, with Scott Billington of Rounder Records. Thomas received her first Grammy nomination in 1991. She received her second Grammy nomination in 1998 along with Marcia Ball and Tracy Nelson. She has continued to maintain an active recording and touring schedule since. Thomas married her manager, Emile Jackson, in 1977. Together, they owned and operated a night club in New Orleans called the Lion’s Den until it was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Thomas has a total of seven children.

09. I Just Dropped By To Say Hello (5:12)
10. Are You The Lady (4:30)

Walter "Wolfman" Washington's 2018 album My Future Is My Past begins with the sound of ice clinking in a glass and the singer taking a swallow, quietly murmuring "That's gonna work." It's a fitting opener for this set; if ever there was a blues equivalent to the albums Frank Sinatra cut of what he called "saloon songs," this is it. My Future Is My Past is a bit different than what folks might expect from Washington; while he has a richly deserved reputation as a gifted guitarist and a soulful vocalist, this set is blues not for the joyous heart of Saturday night but for 3 a.m., after the juke joint is closed and you're left with a last sip of bourbon and someone on your mind. My Future Is My Past is thoughtful and low-key, a set of songs about love both good and bad, and while Washington plays guitar on these sessions, the focus is on his vocals, with the instrumental accompaniment from a team of top New Orleans talent offering subtle, unobtrusive support. (Kudos to Ben Ellman of Galactic, whose production flatters the headliner while giving him enough room to work his magic.) Washington's voice is a bit on the rough side here (doubtless due to the fact he was 74 when this album was released), but his phrasing is smart and silky-smooth, informed by jazz and classic soul as much as New Orleans blues, and he can evoke longing and heartache with the panache of a veteran actor. And bringing in the great Irma Thomas to duet with Washington on "Even Now" was truly inspired casting. My Future Is My Past is not an album that will get the party started, but if it's a rainy night and you want to hear the sound of a man skillfully baring his soul, then this is just what you need. ~by Mark Deming

On Saturday, May 3, 2014, a group of esteemed musicians and friends joined together for “The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: A Celebration of Mac & His Music” a special concert event taping that honored this musical icon. The star-studded concert took place at New Orleans’ Saenger Theatre, with Dr. John joined by a stunningly diverse assortment of notable guest artists, who perform 22 songs written, recorded and/or popularized by Dr. John during his prolific six-decade career, honoring his large and still-growing musical legacy.

“It was very moving to have all these people paying tribute to me, but I just treated it like it was another show,” Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and six-time GRAMMY®-winner Dr. John says of The Musical Mojo of Dr. John: A Celebration of Mac & His Music.

The performers include Bruce Springsteen, who duets with Dr. John on the 1973 smash “Right Place Wrong Time”; Jason Isbell, who delivers a heartfelt “Blow Wind Blow”; John Fogerty, who performs the raucous Crescent City anthem “New Orleans”; Mavis Staples, who brings gospel fervor to “Lay My Burden Down”; Widespread Panic, who lend musical muscle to “Familiar Reality”; and Ryan Bingham, who delivers a haunting “Back by the River.”

Fittingly, The Musical Mojo of Dr. John also features memorable performances by several New Orleans legends, including Allen Toussaint, Irma Thomas, Terence Blanchard, John Boutté, Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, George Porter Jr. and Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, and Aaron, Charles and Cyril Neville. Bassist Don Was served as the project’s musical director, leading an all-star house band that also included Allman Brothers Band/Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, renowned NOLA pianist John Gros, Funky Meters guitarist Brian Stoltz and journeyman drummer Kenny Aronoff, as well as Dr. John’s longstanding musical compatriot, trombonist Sarah Morrow.

B.B. King - Blues Summit

Year: 1993
Bitrate: MP3@320K/s
Time: 62:42
Size: 146,3 MB
Styles: Blues
Scans: Full

1. Playin' With My Friends (w. Robert Cray) (5:18)
2. Since I Met You Baby (w. Katie Webster) (4:45)
3. I Pity The Fool (w. Buddy Guy) (4:36)
4. You Shook Me (w. John Lee Hooker) (4:59)
5. Something You Got (w. Koko Taylor) (4:02)
6. There's Something On Your Mind (w. Etta James) (6:02)
7. Little By Little (w. Lowell Fulson) (4:07)

9. You're The Boss (w. Ruth Brown) (4:07)
10. We're Gonna Make It (w. Irma Thomas) (3:51)
11. I Gotta Move Out Of This Neighborhood/Nobody Loves Me But My Mother (B.B. King Orchestra) (8:57)
12. Everybody's Had The Blues (w. Joe Louis Walker) (4:35)

On this release, King comes close to equaling his past triumphs on small independent labels in the '50s and '60s. He's ditched the psuedo-hip production fodder and cut a 12-song set matching him with blues peers. His duets with Buddy Guy, John Lee Hooker, and Albert Collins are especially worthy, while the songs with Koko Taylor, Ruth Brown, and Irma Thomas have some good-natured banter and exchanges, as well as tasty vocals.

The master gives willing pupils Joe Louis Walker and Robert Cray valuable lessons on their collaborations. There's also a medley in which King invokes the spirit of his chitlin circuit days, taking the vocal spotlight while his Orchestra roars along underneath. /Ron Wynn, AllMusic

Back in 1998, the New Orleans Musicians Clinic (NOMC) was formed to provide much-needed healthcare to the city's many musicians and their families. The clinic was the first such health initiative in the United States, and has served as an invaluable blueprint for other cities. The clinic is part of the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation (NOMAF), which provides social and occupational assistance to over 1,800 struggling musicians in the Crescent City.

Shortly after the opening of the NOMC, the organization released the original Get You A Healin' CD, a twelve-track collection of New Orleans styled blues, jazz, and R&B that featured artists like Art Neville, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, Irma Thomas, and Coco Robicheaux, among others. All the musicians donated their time and songs to this benefit album, which was intended to raise awareness of musician's health issues and maybe make a little much-needed cash for the clinic.

Flash forward a decade or so, and the ravages of Hurricane Katrina and its lengthy aftermath have wreaked havoc on New Orleans' musical heritage. With federal funding cuts and dwindling contributions due to the economy, the New Orleans Musicians Clinic is going back to the well one more time with an anniversary reissue of Get You A Healin'. The digital-only release will be available on iTunes, Amazon, and other retailers on August 24, 2010 and money raised from the sales of the digital album and individual tracks will be used to further the clinic's efforts.

For this anniversary reissue, the original twelve tracks on Get You A Healin' have been expanded by another ten new songs, the expanded album featuring the talents of the aforementioned artists as well as folks like guitarist Richard Thompson, Sonia Dada, the subdudes, Bonerama, Christine Ohlman (of the Saturday Night Band), and the great B.B. King, among others. ~By Reverend Keith A. Gordon
