Ten Years After’s Woodstock performance was, up until that time, their biggest live triumph. Appearing at the festival in August 1969, in front of a 500,000 strong audience, the festival was a landmark moment in musical history, featuring Jimi Hendrix, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Who, Joe Cocker, Jefferson Airplane, Sly & The Family Stone and many more.

The band played an extraordinary set, including a blistering performance of the anthemic “I’m Going Home” which became a highlight of the award-winning documentary movie “Woodstock: 3 Days Of Peace And Music”. This new release, recorded on the evening of Sunday August 17, 1969, marks the first standalone release of the performance, newly restored and featuring fresh mixes from the original 2” multitrack tapes.

Personnel: Alvin Lee (vocals, guitar); Leo Lyons (bass); Ric Lee (drums); Chick Churchill (organ, piano).

The cover of Ten Years After's 1973 album Recorded Live depicts a giant reel-to-reel recorder, which certainly captures the era when this double-LP set was recorded. Approaching the end of their run - only one more album would come, 1974's Positive Vibrations - Ten Years After were deep into the thick of '70s arena rock, so everything they played on-stage wound up stretching well beyond the five-minute mark, sometimes reaching upward of 11 minutes.

Everything on this double-LP places improvisation over groove - a sentiment that is accentuated on the 2013 expansion, which winds up running 21 tracks over two discs, adding bonus outtakes to the original double-LP set. The best parts here are the improvisations, particularly Alvin Lee's long, languid guitar solos, but this album - either in its original incarnation or in its expansion - is a distinctly '70s creation: it's unhurried and indulgent, reveling in its slow, steady march to a virtuosic, never-ending guitar solo. /Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Though much early rock & roll was based in the blues, Blues-Rock didn't fully develop into a subgenre until the late-'60s. Blues-rock emphasized two specific things -- the traditional, three-chord blues song and instrumental improvisation. Borrowing the idea of an instrumental combo and loud amplification from rock & roll, the original blues-rockers -- bands like Cream that grew out of the Alexis Korner and John Mayall tradition of British blues, as well as American bands like the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Canned Heat -- also attempted to play long, involved improvisations which were commonplace on jazz records, as well as live blues shows. The hybrid became quite popular and the bands that immediately followed them were louder and more riff-oriented. Out of this approach came heavy metal and Southern rock, which both used basic blues riffs and featured extended solos. In the early '70s, the lines between blues-rock and hard rock were barely visible, as boogie-based bands like ZZ Top employed album-rock production techniques that tended to obscure their blues roots. However, blues-rock soon backed away from hard rock, and there was a set number of acts that continued to play (and rewrite) blues standards as well as write their own songs in the same idiom. In the '80s and '90s, blues-rock was more roots-oriented than in the '60s and '70s, even when artists like the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Stevie Ray Vaughan flirted with rock stardom. By the '80s, blues-rock had become an accepted tradition, much like the blues.

Recorded live at Chris Barber's Marquee Club in London in 1983 this is basically a 'greatest hits' show and it moves along at a good pace culminating with (of course) a thirteen minute plus version of 'Goin' home'. This show is some 14 years on from Woodstock but Alvin & Rik Lee, Chick Churchill and Leo Lyons show they can still rip it up as good as any rock and roll band can.

Ten Years After - Think About The Times: The Chrysalis Years (1969-1972) [3-Disc Set]

2010 three CD release featuring albums plus rare tracks all recorded during their time on Chrysalis Records. Their fourth album, Ssssh., issued in August 1969, coincided with their breakthrough appearance at the Woodstock festival, a definite highlight of the subsequent film and LP of that show. Fifth album Cricklewood Green, issued in April 1970, featured their biggest UK chart hit with 'Love Like A Man'. 1971's A Space In Time showed a change in direction, no doubt inspired by the more acoustic sounds prevalent in the States at the time. As well as producing their biggest Stateside hit with 'I'd Love To Change the World', this set is completed by Rock & Roll Music to the World from 1972, a classic mix of the blues and rock 'n' roll that made the band such a successful live draw, with lead guitarist Alvin Lee hailed as one of the fastest players in the world. This set also includes rare b-sides and single edits, appearing on CD for the first time.
